- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32Oy, let the Vista vs XP vs Linux/BSD vs OSX melee begin. I'm going to slowly step away from the inevitable mess now.
- sirbeta, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28The same sort of comments were made about XP when it was first released. Look what happened.
- helius, on 10/10/2007, -1/+23Vista actually runs quite well, provided you give it enough power. I've got 2 gigs of RAM, a (somewhat old) dual core AMD, and and an 8800GTS. I have never had many issues - only a few bluescreens. Yes, it's not as stable as Linux, but it plays a hell of a lot more games, and it's way better than XP was before any of its service packs.
- Nanaki, on 10/10/2007, -5/+23So, they "release" a pre-beta and are now finally releasing an "official" beta. Let's hope this goes along quickly.
As long as it comes close to XP, Vista will be the main OS I play around on. - toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17look I don't know what kind of computer you people are using, but I've been running it since it came out and I've seriously had no issues with it. It's stable and when it crashes, it recovers quicker than XP did. I've had very few issues with backwards compatibility. I think the biggest issue I had was a game not working and Fireworks CS3 having some lag issues when in Aero-mode (which i very easily set to switch windows into Vista Basic color mode when I run Fireworks.)
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24*****.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16My main OS is Ubuntu but I partition to Vista. It handles RAM way better than XP, everyone is so caught up in the anti-Vista movement nobody bothers to try it themselves. I can't stand going to XP at work, I'd rather use Vista 100 times over. Regardless, the SP will be nice, but I will never stop using Linux.
- VocalFX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Hopefully it's finished by november so we can all enjoy Crysis.
- rompom7, on 10/10/2007, -9/+22I dont understand that argument. I'm not a MS fanboy, but I don't see how XP is better than Vista.
Please, anyone, enlighten me about the advantages of XP over Vista, I'd really like to know.
I'm honestly not being sarcastic. I'm running Ubuntu vs Vista dual boot, I have used XP for the past 5 years, and I really feel that it is getting quite old, It looks dated, and I can't think of one feature that XP has that Vista does not. - FuzzyC, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Vista does not require you buy a DX10 card to play games. It utilizes DX9 cards just fine; Aero only requires DX9 and DX9 games run fine. DX10 is optional; if you have a card that supports it and the game supports it, then it will be used.
Vista is more secure than XP; if you refuse to admit that, it is at least as good. Vista is stable; some IHVs decided to be cheap with the driver development and some drivers have stability issues, but you cannot expect Microsoft to write drivers for every IHVs' hardware.
I have had no compatibility issue that could not be resolved with a simple software update from the developer of said software. Even then, I have only had to find updates for 2 programs (Nero and iTunes) since launch. - legioss, on 10/10/2007, -6/+17How about XP service pack 3?
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Sirhomer, that's because there was no Digg, no Reddit, no Slashdot, Apple was still obscure, and so was Linux. Most importantly, there the whole concept of fanboyism hadn't been invented yet.
- bcassner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I have been using Vista for a few months now and have had no blue screens. I am able to play Guild Wars just fine. I also had just one driver issue and that was with my ATI adapter, one update fixed it though. I have to say I am very pleased with how it works on my laptop thus far.
- epyon180, on 10/10/2007, -15/+22I really wanted to keep using vista, I tried my best but its just not usable enough at this point. I can't wait for the SP1.
- superjamie, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11""Microsoft is working hard to change perception about Service Packs, largely because the company feels they are overemphasized as critical OS updates. White points to Windows Update as the real venue for critical updates...""
Pretty sure they'll soon turn around and say "You must have Vista SP1 to use Windows Update." just like they do with XP SP2 now.
Sounds like a pretty critical update to me. - qkslvr221, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I have used it since November 2006 as my primary OS, even the littlest nuances have been fixed with driver and Windows updates. If you do the research, have the right hardware, and know how to configure properly, Vista is great.
- Zoltair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Been using Vista here for a few months, only one minor problem, took about 2 minutes to resolve, and since then great. It has been way more stable and forgiving an OS then XP was on some of my older games and software. Networking is great. I have to agree with bjweeks, getting the right hardware is everything. Try to install on old and questionable hardware, you're asking for trouble. Right now I have no plans to switch back to XP.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9You really don't have a clue do you. The two standalone updates for Vista released a couple of weeks ago brought some pretty big performance improvements. You are sadly mistaken if you think an entire service pack is going to make things worse. But hey, whatever makes you feel cool, man. You can stick to SuperTux if you're a Linux guy or you can go ahead and pay extra for the same games you'd get for less on PC, but I'm going to go ahead and play HL2.
- ebcreasoner, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Vista AMD Sempron 2800+ 1.61 GHZ 512 RAM
No problems. Not slow even when producing music. - supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You're smoking crack if you are saying OS X doesnt get updates. It gets them all the time, automatically.
Ever click on your apple and select software update? Or perhaps you have it default to update automatically and never noticed.
And osx 10, 10.2 10.3 and 10.4 are major updates which are released (though I do admit at good low prices) for profit, but do offer newer functionality not just updates.
Dont get me wrong, Ive tried almost every OS in existence from DOS to Windows 1.0 to 3.11 to NT, XP, Vista, Ubuntu, Redhat , OS2 and OS X and I think OS X is the best of them all... but it does require updates all the time. Mind you, not always security updates due to the rock solid Unix core. - nukem996, on 10/10/2007, -6/+11Ya 2000 is still faster then XP which is why many people still are sticking with 2000.
- ghostlywind, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8I will wait to see what people say happened after they updated, before i reinstall vista. Until then long live XP
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://www.betanews.com/article/Microsoft_XP_SP3_an_Update_Rollup/1188411783
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5What the ***** are you talking about? I've never, ever, ever had that problem and I am doing what you asked as I type this.
- estvir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There's a real world.
Digg isn't it. - gcnaddict, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually, the pre-beta was an unauthorized leak. It was tested with a select group of supposedly highly trusted people. I guarantee you they won't be doing that again.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5It's been incredibly stable for me, just as stable as linux, and this is with a p4 3.0 Ghz, 1 GB RAM and a 7600GS. It runs great so far. I'm upgrading to 2 gb of ram soon.
- specialK16, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Yet MSN Messenger 8.0 won't run, nor Office 2007, and so on.
- YourMaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes. I like it, and I have friends who like it. Then again, we got free copies from Microsoft. I don't think I'd have paid full price for Vista, already having another Operating System, but it is a definite improvement. It's a shame there isn't absolutely total compatibility with XP games, just pretty damn close to total compatibility, but then again, the only OS that manages that and ever will manage that fully is XP. Vista has numerous advantages over the same. UAC needs to be disabled for power users, and the minimum requirements are higher, but once you reach a magic threshold level it feels, to me (a computer engineer and power-user) much faster and more responsive and most of all, more usable. I absolutely detest not being able to use the start-menu search now, for instance. I know other OS's had it first, but that's not the point. XP didn't and Vista has almost all of the advantages of XP (especially compatibility).
It's a fact of life that hardware requirements go up, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there's less for all the other software when you are using Vista. Somebody else mentioned above how much improved the memory management is. If you don't have enough memory, then Vista will suck anyway. If you have more than enough, that RAM will serve you better than a larger amount of RAM would in XP. And so on and so forth.
I think most of the complaints on Vista come down to:
a) UAC. Yes, it's annoying.
b) Some random incompatible program. It will happen no matter how MSFT (or anybody else) tries.
c) Hardware issues, especially not enough hardware. I honestly don't know if the recommended requirements are enough; I've never seen Vista on a marginal system, only on fairly top-of-the-line ones (but I stress, I've seen the exact same systems under XP and they feel even faster under Vista, to me). I can pretty much guarantee, however, that running below the recommended specs is a bad idea.
d) Spiteful, wishful thinking from people who cheerlead against Microsoft. The slashdot crowd was doing this well before Vista was released on the basis of the speed of debug versions.
e) Reasonable irrationalism. By this I mean, for example, the people who complain that Vista is DRM-encumbered. Sure, it doesn't force you to use DRM as well, the only difference is that it's possible to play DRM stuff on Vista (and OSX!) but not on most GPL software. As a matter of principle they refuse to buy software even remotely associated with DRM in order to quash it. Frankly, DRM is a feature, and not in any sense a bug of Vista, so it's an irrational reason to dislike Vista per se, but perhaps a reasonable reason not to purchase it. - Zoltair, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Never a problem here either with network slowdown due to playing music, if its a bug, then it doesn't effect everybody. I use both media player and iTunes without so much as a problem, and torrents fly just fine at full speed as does my internal LAN traffic. I tested it several times since all my music is all stored on a separate server located someplace else in my home I thought I would see an impact, but nope....
- jerry2a, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Here. I'm not a huge windows fan - more of a unix bigot - but I do use it a lot. I've been using Vista for about a month now and I actually LIKE it. I've had no major issues, lockups, bluescreens, etc. A few annoyances with how they dumbed some things down, but I like the new start menu (searchable) and I've always preferred using the 'classic' view; and the searches overall are quite good. I find the performance is pretty good (2GB RAM is the minimum though) and the eye-candy isn't too bad. I had no plans to use Vista - it came preinstalled on a new laptop - but I've been really surprised. I run quite a few different (and old) apps and I've yet to run into any compatibility issues either. There's a few of us in our office using it and none of us get this whole "vista is unstable!" nonsense. I hated XP at first, but I grew to like it eventually - after a few days I came to the conclusion that Vista is definitely an improvement. It's young - and it could use some minor updates (I think hardware manufacturers have yet to perfect their drivers too) but if you've got the hardware, there's no reason not to try it. I have another system I use a lot that runs XP and everytime I use it I find myself wishing it was running Vista.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3If we make it look like service packs are old school and our new delivery system is the future, people will look away from the stain on the carpet and our lack of attention to cleaning it up.
- BlackJackJester, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7I think its funny how few people actually know the windows command line these days. Linux pretty much requires it, while most windows users barely know it exists. It's actually fairly powerful. (gonna be dugg down for defending MS, I know)
- HonoredMule, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, 2k missed out on a lot of credit, because many skipped it, opting for an upgrade straight to XP. That said, 2k was originally plagued with extensive compatibility issues until the developers and existing commercial software were fully on board with running on NT kernels.
However, I took it up shortly before XP was released, and stuck with it until just this summer, when it started getting seriously shafted by lack of support. - omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The point flew straight over your head. I was not talking about the "early days" I was talking about when XP was released.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Already dualboot it, but SuperTux doesn't quite compare to HL2, Bioshock, or the Total War series. Wine? No thanks, it's a coin flip whether it decides to work for me or not. Nice try though.
- Nanolight, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It is stable enough as long as you got the right drivers. Performance is the big thing though =/
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Got proof of that? I keep seeing that repeated over and over but I was on the Internets in 2001 and I don't remember this level of mud slinging on Windows XP.
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3meaning that its stable for the most part, but on the occasion that it freezes up and crashes it recovered quicker than XP did. OS X, XP, and linux are all regarded as stable, but that doesn't mean they're immune to crashing.
- ElRayQuieres, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2That's because most people were on 98/ME; happiness is relative.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Liar! (See below.)
- toxicityj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4and I'm confirming that its not happening to me right now.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I know...I know...I got sucked in too. =]
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You were anti-mac until you bought a macbook? I'm anti Windows, I wouldn't go out and buy Vista just to find out I like it AFTERwards
