there. hate me. - corevette, on 10/11/2007, -7/+74I beg that no one tell a Russian Soviet joke....
- delirio, on 10/11/2007, -3/+41That's just awesome . . .
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+40@dgblackout: "in soviet russia, windows activates you."
Consider me shocked that it took 4 posts for someone to share this insight. - BruceBogtrotter, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31@mattmcm
I doubt he stole it from the article. Thats probably the most obvious soviet russia joke to use in this situation. - mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Bah. They've got seven days before customers start complaining to them. Hurry the ***** up and crack that thing!

"I wonder what happens if you click yes"
Probably "We suspect you may be a victim of counterfeiting software" - XStatic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22If you call dupe, at least post some links..

- loof, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Most atms use windows even in the us...
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16wasent this already on digg...... like.. a couple days ago :
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -6/+21Yesterday? I must have seen this a couple weeks ago. And it was just as lame then, too.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Most ATMs run an embedded version of Windows XP. If you've ever seen the rear of an ATM, it's literally a computer tower with a vault bolted to it, an Ethernet cable running toward the bank's network, and a little control panel to do maintenance work.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14This was already on the front page yesterday...
At least engadget got it right and said it's unactivated instead of saying it's automatically pirated because it's not activated.
Edit: Even engadget thinks it's pirated just because it's not activated... what is the world coming to?
"(presumably pirated)" - skyfire1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I didn't see this yesterday unlike some people because I was WORKING. Now stop bitching people.
- joe90210, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13uhhh ATMs have been running Windows since the original Windows NT days, people saying "Windows on ATMs??" are idiots
- jubilee123, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13a real job consists of lots and lots of internet time... just sayin
- rabidjade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Probably because they aren't the security risk people blindly scream they are. ATM's have a very limited access to the outside public. If you can hack using a credit card and a keypad, then they have a lot more to worry about. People need to learn how the hardware works before they start insulting the software. A large majority of ATM's here in the USA use embedded windows versions without problems.
- itjamesd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11For those of you who are interested where this originally came from, it from a blog called English Russia, mainly about modern Russia, but also about past lifestyles in soviet Russia.
BTW the original article: http://englishrussia.com/?p=981 - HarryHunt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I've seen a couple of crashed ATMs and they all ran OS/2 (seriously).
People should just accept that windows isn't the right operating system for anything that has to run over a long period of time and without interruptions. It's not so much that it crashes anymore, it just loves to show modal dialog boxes at random intervals. - itsme92, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Don't You Hate It When I Capitalize Every Word? - TBNK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7@ skywake
untill you write a better operating system why don't you STFU, and that goes for everyone.
Sure windows has its fair share of bugs, but doesn't all software???
Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to produce bigger and better and more idiot proof programmes and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.
So far the Universe is winning. - BlueStreak69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5In one of the OTHER same "mirrors" of this article, another soviet russia joke:
By Shuk:
In Soviet Russia, Windows pirates YOU! (and your bank account)
Sorry I couldn't help it! - FeartheKnighted, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6In regards to seeing things before...
http://digg.com/health/Think_you_ve_seen_this_article_before_Read_to_find_out_why - orphenshadow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This does not surprise me, i work for a company that makes slot machines, we use windows xp on each game, the software is imaged specifically for that use and is a striped down version of the os, sometimes a tech will replace a video card, or ram stick, that will alter the config, and it will need to be re activated... or someone didnt activate it at all.. its a computer, its windows. this is really not that big of a deal
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Downed -- duplicate story.
- JusticeAK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I'd hate to see a blue screen of death, Waiting for forty bucks.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Exactly, it's a SCANDAL. I wouldn't be surprised to see this as the lead article in the New York Times. They might even run a campaign to hold those responsible to account.
- Buckiller, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Probably "We suspect you may be a victim of counterfeiting software"
- specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6do what you want cause a pirate is free
you are a pirate! - Sukrillux, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6From a security standpoint, why aren't they running Linux or something on these things?
- Jeffler, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5You realize Engadget took this from Digg, right?
- waterdrop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If it was pirated it would most likely be a VLK (volume license key) and therefore not need to be activated. Assuming its running XP.
- Dwarfthemike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2as weird as it sounds, it's easier and somewhat cheaper to use windows in the situation even though you obviously have to pay for windows.
If you used Linux, you'd probably have to write extra drivers and stuff for the machine, but there were probably already windows drivers for the ATM so windows was a better solution.
Every up to date cash register i've used ran windows and i thought to myself that same question but windows is just an easier thing to put on something like this. - specialK16, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5im in ur atmz, pirating your windowz
- aldebaran85, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Guys there's no Soviet Russia long time ago. Are you living with time shift or something?
Maybe such jokes must exist too?
In colonial USA, the Queen command you.
In monarchy France, Napoleon revolute you.
In Nazi Germany, Hitler plans to kill you.
Don't you think it's all kinda obsolette? - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1One has to be crazy to insert a debit card into an ATM like this.
- jonrosing, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Dugg because of the comments. lol
- TheWindBlows, on 02/11/2008, -0/+1Actually when you think about it an ATM isn't much different from a regular desktop.
Just about everything it has access to is a normal desktop the other things like the card reader etc same concept as a CD Drive.
Reason its using windows is simple, they can get an IT person from the midst to do it for them they don't need a specific person.
Problem with this is Windows Has RAM HEX editors for it that can edit the data while its in RAM meaning that the values can easily be changed with somebody that has a drive with data a keyboard and mouse person could do some scanning etc and temporarily edit values. (once the program is restarted there isn't really a trace of what happened.)
I've yet to see a program that lets me edit HEX in the RAM for Linux (can't play with video game values T.T) - misterfalcon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Apparently a lot of the ATMs in the U.S. ran OS/2 for years. Since OS/2 is a defunct product, newer ATMs are running Windows XP.
Scary. - LucasVB, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@tippmann1: that guy makes me ashamed of having the same name as him.
- Wyzard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@HarryHunt:
"I've seen a couple of crashed ATMs and they all ran OS/2 (seriously). "
I've seen BSODs on ATMs. :-) - Monstradamus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Why am I not surprised? I remember some time ago Microsoft ran a campaign in Russia to try to sell people who had pirated windows legit product keys at reduced prices and with a guarantee that buyers will not get sued for piracy... I don't think they sold any.
- fishpigkb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i work at a bank and all of our newer ATMs run Windows XP (older ATMs run OS/2)
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i really dont think that wouldn't come up at a board meeting, i doubt they'd even mention anything about cash machines at them, that would be left to one of the middle management types, and even then they wouldnt request it running windows, they'd get whatever the people they buy from uses
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Linux and Windows are about equally secure for systems like this, so it generally comes down to which environment your developers are more comfortable with and competent in, since pretty much all security holes in this kind of system are holes in the custom application, not the OS.
