Which is, the exact same thing all the physical hardware vendors are doing when they submit code. I see nothing wrong here, just another company waking up to the importance of Linux support. It is a good thing.

Rather than try to emulate a real piece of hardware, the hypervisor can instead emulate a more abstract piece that requires far fewer system calls and state transititions. The downside is the guest OS needs drivers for it, the upside is that performance is significently improved.

- FKnight, on 07/21/2009, -0/+23Exactly. The loud anti-MS faction of Linux advocates who have a problem with this that are applying their typical everyone else/Microsoft double-standard to this really show their true colors.
Microsoft is doing *exactly* what other hypervisor vendors are not doing and making sure *every variation of Linux* can run with good performance in their hypervisor product by releasing the driver code as GPL. They're also doing *exactly* what the Linux community demands every other hardware vendor (virtual or physical) do to make their hardware work under Linux (and they even say that it's to help those manufacturers get customers).
Those Linux advocates who are also MS haters should tread very carefully or else they risk showing the world what hypocrites they are and, by extension, making Linux advocacy look even worse than it already looks now. - sdolinsky, on 07/21/2009, -3/+24BEST XKCD EVER!

Of course this is beneficial to the company. Microsoft is a huge monolithic proprietary juggernaut; they aren't going to do anything that doesn't help them. You can't blame them for doing something that is self-serving, because what else do you expect really? It's much more common to run Windows on top of Linux, rather than the other way around.
