- Fazaman, on 07/20/2009, -1/+151What are the drivers for, you ask?
More than half way down the article, they finally mention it:
“Our initial goal in developing the (Linux driver) code was to enable Linux to run as a virtual machine on top of Hyper-V, Microsoft’s hypervisor and implementation of virtualization.
“The Linux device drivers we are releasing are designed so Linux can run in enlightened mode, giving it the same optimized synthetic devices as a Windows virtual machine running on top of Hyper-V. Without this driver code, Linux can run on top of Windows, but without the same high performance levels. We worked very closely with the Hyper-V team at Microsoft to make that happen.” - bobfoster, on 07/21/2009, -1/+95Gotta say, I think this is cool on several levels. First, they released Linux drivers. Second, they released them under a version of the GPL. Third, they obviously felt their VM offering was not competitive unless Linux runs competitively under it.
- AdamFromMyspace, on 07/21/2009, -1/+86Hahaha, I once had a Win98 file copy dialog say it was going to take 57 years to copy something.

3. ???
4. Profit - esc27, on 07/21/2009, -1/+41Clearly Microsoft is out to profit by making Linux run better on its virtual hardware. Which is, the exact same thing all the physical hardware vendors are doing when they submit code. I see nothing wrong here, just another company waking up to the importance of Linux support. It is a good thing.

- yocouchdigga, on 07/21/2009, -6/+35all Microsoft wants in return is the Linux community's soul.
- Suricou, on 07/21/2009, -1/+29Performance. Rather than try to emulate a real piece of hardware, the hypervisor can instead emulate a more abstract piece that requires far fewer system calls and state transititions. The downside is the guest OS needs drivers for it, the upside is that performance is significently improved.
Xen supports this too, if you configure it. - tofagerl, on 07/21/2009, -0/+25It does work. Now it just works "Better" ;)
Seriously, drivers will always be better when made directly for the hypervisor. - awoodhouse, on 07/21/2009, -12/+36Linux bigots - get over yourselves - the world is complex with heterogeneous computing environments - what's so wrong with stuff working better in virtualisation (whether it be zen or vmware or hyper-v).
- FKnight, on 07/21/2009, -0/+23Exactly. The loud anti-MS faction of Linux advocates who have a problem with this that are applying their typical everyone else/Microsoft double-standard to this really show their true colors.
Microsoft is doing *exactly* what other hypervisor vendors are not doing and making sure *every variation of Linux* can run with good performance in their hypervisor product by releasing the driver code as GPL. They're also doing *exactly* what the Linux community demands every other hardware vendor (virtual or physical) do to make their hardware work under Linux (and they even say that it's to help those manufacturers get customers).
Those Linux advocates who are also MS haters should tread very carefully or else they risk showing the world what hypocrites they are and, by extension, making Linux advocacy look even worse than it already looks now. - sdolinsky, on 07/21/2009, -3/+24BEST XKCD EVER!
- silviumc, on 07/21/2009, -5/+24These drivers serve only their own Microsoft product Hyper-V. They are not useful for anything else. With these drivers you can run Linux in a virtual machine on Hyper-V with better performance. They could be viewed as a feature of Hyper-V.

- GavinZac, on 07/21/2009, -1/+16I guarantee you these lines of code will be read and reviewed more than any others in the kernel! I wonder if there's any bugs, will MS add them to 'get the truth'.
- dushkin, on 07/21/2009, -8/+23At first I was surprised, and somehow kind of happy. Then I realized that what this really is just something Microsoft is doing for their Hyper-V. In other words, the only one who's really gaining anything... is Microsoft.
- ChromaVita, on 07/21/2009, -4/+19I don't think that exactly works in this situation...
- FKnight, on 07/21/2009, -0/+15@silviumc

- zip000, on 07/21/2009, -0/+13I hate Microsoft, but end users will obviously benefit from this as well - even if it is a pretty small contribution overall.
Of course this is beneficial to the company. Microsoft is a huge monolithic proprietary juggernaut; they aren't going to do anything that doesn't help them. You can't blame them for doing something that is self-serving, because what else do you expect really? At least this may be helpful for the Linux community as well. - next, on 07/21/2009, -1/+14I'm not sure why you're being dug down. Regardless of your personal OS preference, this is pretty accurate. It's much more common to run Windows on top of Linux, rather than the other way around.
- Elranzer, on 07/21/2009, -1/+14Where's Admiral Ackbar when you need him?
- azpat, on 07/21/2009, -0/+12Like my ATI drivers are only useful for making my ATI Video Card work. It's not useful for anything else.
- tnoy, on 07/21/2009, -0/+12Yeah, Microsoft is full of ***** only serving themselves. Unlike those great companies like AMD who are creating drivers for NVIDIA hardware.. oh wait.
- FKnight, on 07/21/2009, -1/+12@dushkin
Isn't that kind of like saying that if video card and sound card manufacturers released their drivers as open source that only those manufacturers would be the ones gaining anything?
Are you so dense that now a company releasing drivers under GPL is bad?
This reaction is exactly as I expected. -
