- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -25/+230Microsoft has paid the bills at PC Mag since DOS, this is huge news.
- Waterrat, on 10/10/2007, -42/+233"I might just do the unthinkable: I might move to Linux."
Dude,it won't be so bad, really. - NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -21/+120Well, this isn't really the norm... I've been using Vista since it came out, and had little to no problems at all with it... Course I do dual boot with Linux, but I still spend most my time in windows because of compatibility requirements...
Too bad this guy has so many problems... but hey... oh well...
Personally, I hope more and more people switch to Linux! I want the market share to be big enough, that all companies are forced to start catering to the Linux users... I'm tired of having to use Windows, just because a few things depend on it... - hove, on 10/10/2007, -3/+72Maybe thats why he chose to say this in his last article as editor-in-chief?
- ccheath, on 10/10/2007, -4/+70WAS the editor... now he's CEO of Revision3 .... did anyone else read the article, or pay attention to anything lately?
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -4/+60Did you just say the editor of PC Magazine is too stupid to use a computer?
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -14/+61I'm afraid to post anything negative about Vista on Digg.
If I do, I get called a "Linux fanboy". When I say that I like XP, I get called an "XP fanboy".
What the hell do you want from me? - quomen, on 10/10/2007, -45/+88Vista isn't so bad.. really.
- mustiy, on 10/10/2007, -19/+59Benn running Vista home premium (previously had ultimate) for some months now and i can honestly say i dint have any problems with it- except that 1 standby bug. Other then that I'm A-OK.
- kelchm, on 10/10/2007, -19/+54He is 100% right about standby.
Its absolutely unreliable on Vista.
Other than that and some general UI organization issues, I don't have too many complaints about Vista. - Wang, on 10/10/2007, -7/+40Why did someone vote down this guy for giving his opinion? He runs Vista, and he has no problems with it....get over it!
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -13/+45It has serious issues. I'm moving away from it soon (on the Windows side). It's not that it's extremely bad but right now there are a series of ***** issues I'm not willing to deal with:
1. My DVD-RW doesn't appear unless I have a disc in it when I boot.
2. Occasionally large file transfers will lock up and leave me needing to kill the entire desktop and hope for the best.
3. It doesn't integrate well with my network. It can detect shares but always gives an error on transfer.
4. As it switches between user levels you get a big screen flicker which is annoying
5. Older apps turn off accelerated mode. This is retarded, there is no reason why the old API cannot be made to work with the new framework. Linux achieved this without even modifying the libraries.
6. Inability to get my compiler working correctly. I've tried MinGW, Borland 5.5 and MSVC++ 2005 Toolkit and none of them have been able to compile OpenGL code properly. It's just a pain in the ass that I have to spend ages getting working what takes moments in other systems. Even XP is much easier than this (though it's still difficult to get OpenGL to compile in XP and the library is still horrendously out of date).
I tried to like Vista and much of it is good. Unfortunately it has serious issues right now and XP is simply superior to it as a Windows solution. Linux is and will probably remain my primary platform though. - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -9/+41The guy is also the chief editor of PC Mag, which is a pretty high up position in a magazine.
- CDoug03, on 11/06/2007, -29/+60It will be a cold day in hell when i upgrade to Vista
- mamorico, on 10/10/2007, -15/+44This seems like a huge defection!
- tgunner, on 10/10/2007, -12/+39Vista Home Basic is a joke. It has all of the problems of Vista, with none of the features. Just thought I'd throw that out there....
- ninxmz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24Jesus christ, what the *****.
- ph3rny, on 10/10/2007, -11/+32Isn't the bigger story that he's becoming part of Revision3?
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -6/+26This is Digg....ya know...the whole "user generated content" thing.
Find a Vista success story and post it. I'm all ears. - Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/10/2007, -10/+29There's a difference between a "working" OS and a "good" OS.
- ha1f, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18As long as your reasons for supporting (or not supporting) the OS dont consist of terrible misinformation and horrid generalizations, I wont call you a fanboy.
- forteller, on 10/10/2007, -6/+24Yes, the editor-in-chief of PC Magazine for five years is an idiot. And you, I'm sure, is a friggin genius..
- Kniggit, on 10/10/2007, -54/+72Windows Vista is to 2007 what Windows ME was to 1999 - a big fat turd.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -12/+30I'll try Vista when people other than shills and a few blessed ones have anything good to say about it.
- joel8x, on 10/10/2007, -5/+22Considering the things he's griping about, it would probably be worse.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+21Just so long as you aren't one of those self-important twits who posts "get a mac" you'll still be loved.
- dm33, on 10/10/2007, -7/+23Surprised no one has suggested it so far...
but it may really be worth giving Mac OS X a try. Its an excellent blend of a relatively easy to use commercial operating system and Unix. Best of both worlds. It does have bugs, it does crash, it does have device driver issues. But after using it for a year, its overall a much more pleasing experience than using XP or Vista. - Heembo, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19The problem is, after 7 years, we expected Vista to be MUCH MORE than "just fine"
- Ajajadude, on 10/10/2007, -9/+24Oh, well, since YOU haven't had a problem...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+17IT is not so much he is a noob as he is very Digg savy. He needed to get some publicity for his new job so he baited the digg mafia with a story they couldn't resist.
Rather clever actually. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -11/+25For ***** sake!! When will you ***** get it horugh your stupid fat heads that the memory usage thing is complete *****.
Vista, like ALL modern OSes, is precaching stuff that its seen you use often so it won't take as long to load stuff up when you initiate a favorite program.
And NEWS FLASH you can turn UAC off, but even if you don't it settles down within a couple of days. The latest patch speeds up the file transfer thing as well.
Do a bit of research before mouthing off about ***** you have NO idea about! - KyjL, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Whoever is burying zy's comment really hasn't used 64-bit Vista at all.
Seriously, it's that bad. - Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -14/+28I want to agree with you, but honestly....
I recently brought a brand new lenovo laptop. Brand new. This was 2 weeks ago. Preinstalled with vista.
The specs on this computer are absolutely brilliant, it's the new T61 with all the goodies and such.
Here's the thing: Vista trashes it. The computer runs slower than my 800mhz machine. Which is absolutely sad for a Duo Core 2 system! It's pathetic even. Buggy? HA! It won't sync up correctly with my wireless router (even after installing all updates and driver updates, yes...) And now that I have got it to sync it's SLOW SLOW SLOW. My downloads never go above 50, and the connection hiccups/freezes often.
My XP system runs gorgeously on the same wireless.
It's just painfully slow, and while most things work, the fact that it can't connect properly to a wifi connection that has proven to work great for all of my computers (and my friends) it's just a sad testament. I sit around every day praying for new updates from windows... It never happens.
So I'm at the point where I either reformat and install XP, or I sell the laptop and go Apple.
I bought this laptop because it had the power (and videocard) to play a few games. Vista makes this idea laughable. - Homunculiheaded, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19I have to say that as an ubuntu user when I loaded vista onto a new PC I really enjoyed it, and actually was using it almost solely for the last 3 months (without too much complaint). Vista is the best Windows OS and they do deserve credit for it, but after the 'newness' wore off, I did go back to ubuntu as my primary desktop. However I never had any problems on Vista and I was doing quite a lot on that system, from everyday desktop stuff, to gaming, to database application development and a little RoR work. The only thing I wasn't doing was any serious networking so that I don't know about. But other than it seeming to get perpetually slower, I never really had any trouble with it. Ubuntu is still a more stable and extensible OS, that I still think is my prefered environment for any development work, but Vista really isn't that bad (and is a hell of a lot better than XP)
- Pumaman, on 10/10/2007, -10/+23I have Vista home premium on a new HP laptop I purchased 3 months ago. Safe to say I won't be replacing Windows XP on my home system anytime soon.
The sleep mode and wireless connection issues mentioned in this article are bang on, as well as the overall sluggishness of the system. UAC is a joke, startup and shut down take 3 times longer than they would in Windows XP. My webcam is unreliable on the laptop, constantly saying it is in use when nothing else is running (fresh start). I have to uninstall it and reinstall it all the time to get it to work. It's so bad that I am thinking about replacing Vista with XP on the laptop. People have been saying SP1 might be better (as it was with XP) so I will hold out hope and see. Jim is spot on with the vista problems though. - EricTheGrey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I have to agree with quomen here. I built my machine in March, and made certain that I had all vista compatible parts (except my printer) to start with, so maybe that helped, but some of the things the two above me have mentioned, I've just not seen. Maybe I'm just lucky.
That is not to discount the problems others have, or say that there are not issues. I do have networking problems, while trying to connect TO the vista box from another machine. I get permission errors sometimes (not always). I'd bet there is a solution somewhere to it, I just haven't bothered to look since it is only a minor problem.
Even with all this, I'd like to recommend Vista, but I cannot. Too many people have problems like those above for me to ignore. For myself, I'm willing to give it some sweat to get things running, and have managed to do so, but most people don't want that hassle. My father is purchasing a laptop for my niece to use in college next year. Being the alpha computer geek in my family, I'll be the one picking it out. You can bet that unless she decides she wants Linux, it'll be loaded with XP, along with all the extras that need to go with it (AV, Firewall, Backup software, etc).
On the plus side, while said box was down due to a dead motherboard, I used Ubuntu almost exclusively for almost 3 months, and only rarely had boot over into XP (my old machine is dual-boot with Ubuntu and XP for beta testing on XP). Some apps just would not run, even with wine (like Quicken) and there were no substitutes that worked (as well).
EtG - yournamehere, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15i'll get your coat
- shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13dugg up simply because the text of your comment was not "this is why osx is better."
- Hostile, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15Have you installed the Performance and Reliability pack and the Compatibility and Reliability pack? They fixed the file transfer problem.

2) Bookcamp to Win XP
3) Play cool games
4) Kick yourself for not buying a nice dell at 1/2 the price - MacParrot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11zybch has a tendency to go completely insane whenever someone mentions Apple.
- Dotdotdot, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11August is the 8th month, September is the 9th. (09/04/07 = September 4th, 2007)
However, since it's a magazine article, it will be published in the next magazine, which will be dated September 4th, 2007. - shawnz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+152gb is a huuuuuuuuuuge overstatement for vista. it only *requires* about 256mb (due to the installer using a ramdisk) and due to an inane restriction, you need 512mb to turn on glass (but this can be removed, since glass doesn't use system memory anyway.) My other box runs vista ultimate with 512 of ram (albeit no glass) and it's as fast as XP. In fact, since vista boots so much faster than XP, you could say it's better.
digg me down if you like, but i've never had any of these hideous speed problems that people describe-- maybe i'm just lucky. - chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13you must have a really ***** card if you can't find drivers now
- Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Someone did already say it above. Prolly missed it cuz it's currently at -15.
- scabbers, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11That's what they said about the xbox360 "whiners"... I don't accept your argument.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10I've programmed for 7/8 years. I know Gnu/Linux inside and out. I have had problems with Vista. YMMV.
For the record. I had to hack to get the latest Ubuntu release running on my laptop. The latest Linux driver for my motherboard is inherently unstable and I had to black list it and move to a generic IDE driver to get it working. Just pointing out that nothing is perfect but pretending Vista is flawless is ridiculous. - thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14I'm thinking of doing the same thing. I'm quite happy with XP right now and I'll probably stick with it for a year or so now but I'll be slowly shifting over to Linux. I have Ubuntu on my laptop now and just use that on there even though it can dual boot Windows XP too. I've tried Vista and I absolutely hated it. It treated me like a moron who doesn't know computers (nevermind my degree in computer science), it was slow and the graphical "features" didn't look cool to me, they felt and looked cheap! Linux is really going through a phase of massive improvement in compatibility and user friendliness and is looking more inviting by the day!
- BossKey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The difference between OS X and Vista is that when my (non-techie) friends walk out of an Apple Store with a new 1GB RAM MacBook (as several of them have done), I don't have to tell them to buy more RAM, and yet they don't complain about performance.
- obliviousfool, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8That's exactly what I look for in an operating system; one that "isn't so bad."
