- RackAddict, on 05/01/2009, -2/+133Is it just me, or does the article read like it was written by a 12 year old?
- TokenBlack, on 05/01/2009, -3/+115Or... try Windows 7 RC 1 out and see how you like it.
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -5/+101"It will no longer take 5-10 minutes to boot up your machine."
Erm... I'm sorry, but this is the worst media reporting ever. My Vista takes no more than a minute to boot, usually a lot less. - 1uk34dd0, on 05/01/2009, -3/+95FYI, it's not a demo, it's a Beta.
Build 7100 is the RC (the one and only RC that will be released). - kanojo1969, on 05/01/2009, -10/+90Given how stable the product is, RC1 or whatever is fine. I'm still running the free demo build from a few months ago (7000) and haven't had a single issue. I think i've probably only rebooted 3 or 4 times since I installed it.
- gcnaddict, on 05/01/2009, -26/+92Right, because people are going to keep using a pre-RTM version of Windows well after the retail version comes out.
Buried for stupid. - Grovulent, on 05/01/2009, -8/+70I'm sure there was a time back in the day where bluenile's comment would never have been modded down on digg - and these replies never modded up. Perhaps because this story hasn't been on the front page for long yet - and MS fanboys are numerous enough to affect the result?
But I must admit - as much as I want open source to succeed - I agree with Anarchism.
I've tried both windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04. Here's my summary experience of both:
Windows 7:
1) Almost completely painless - fast, and stable. My main criteria for any software I use. Features that go beyond the basic are fairly secondary for me. (that's just a matter of personal preference) Having said this - my two main complaints are:
2) Dual desktop support is average - can't extend the task back across two or more monitors, and can't maximise windows across both screens and:
3) Windows Media Player kinda sucks - and absolutely chews up memory the larger I expand the window when playing a video.
Ubuntu 9.04
1) Crashed first time during install
2) Current FGLRX ati proprietary drivers in the repositories will prevent your machine from booting (as it did mine). I don't mind if I have to go to the ATI website to get the working drivers but for god sake test the drivers you put in the repositories. It was probably fixable by hitting the command line - but who can be *****? For me - who has to look everything up - quicker to simply reinstall the whole thing. (note that with windows 7 you don't even have to go to the ATI site anymore to get the basic driver, or even get it from a repository - it's automatically installed for you.)
3) Dual Screen support is worse than windows 7. I couldn't extend the display at all - it would only mirror the desktop. ATI catalyst may to be blame here... but I'm not going to continue to use something broken just because it's someone else's fault.
4) First time I watched a movie, I clicked the fullscreen button and the whole system crashed.
5) Having spent countless hours fixing issues on previous editions, I vowed never to do it again. At least, I decided I would choose the OS which involved the least amount of time fixing *****. No fanboy, open source mantra *****. Just support the ***** that works - reward the awesome. So after the fullscreen video crash, I uninstalled and went back to windows 7. I'll gladly pay money for it. - rpeters, on 05/01/2009, -9/+68You wont see Apple doing this.
*flame on* - StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -5/+57You know RC means "release candidate"?
If it's actually a RC, then it isn't really that different. If they have an RC2 or RC3 and those also get released then the final RC *should* be identical to the final product.
I realise, however, that the Microsoft definition of RC isn't necessarily the same as the rest of the world's since the RC of Vista wasn't feature complete. Perhaps the built in dictionary in Windows is broken. - HighonPsi, on 05/01/2009, -2/+48@flammablewater He said rebooted. He didn't say it crashed. Instead of breaking down, its more like turning the car on and off. I'm sure you will turn your car off more than 3 times after you buy it.
- nanowerx, on 05/01/2009, -34/+79Microsoft keeps pleasantly surprising me lately. Why does it make me feel so dirty?
- ron7852, on 05/01/2009, -9/+51@ Mikelieman . /sigh...... Your a douchebag. You do not have to install it if you do not want to.... They made a good product,so they want people to see it before they have to buy it. Think of this as a free trial before you purchase it. They are doing a wonderful thing, I think, and you are trying to demonize it. Stop seeing the glass half empty.
- lazyslacker, on 05/01/2009, -7/+48I'm already using the RC and I'm happy with it. I wouldn't have had to pay for it anyway (MSDN Academic Alliance FTW) but it's cool that they're doing this.
- danielttt, on 05/01/2009, -5/+46So you say something unintelligent instead.
- kkm3, on 05/01/2009, -5/+43@flamma: wtf? worst analogy ever. FAIL
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -2/+36Uh, the "compensation for the testers" is not having to pay for Windows for an entire ***** year. You're pissed because after using it for a year, "you have to pay for it". Well whoop-de-*****-do. You'd have to pay for it anyway!
- suprememilo, on 05/01/2009, -1/+34Why did you just buy Vista? we have known about 7 forever...
- KMartSheriff, on 05/01/2009, -9/+40Crapware? As in like what? Stuff that is pre-installed by other manufacturers? Or all the random extra programs (Photo Gallery, etc.)? Or are you just talking out of your ass?
- Mwd500, on 05/01/2009, -2/+33Oh come on, we love try before you buy!!
MS does a lot of stuff wrong but at least I get to try windows 7 for a good while before parting with my cash. This has to be a good thing. - Solkre, on 05/01/2009, -4/+34I still wish they'd let us activate Windows 7 with Vista keys :)
- abhiroop, on 05/01/2009, -5/+34@mikelieman
you forgot to account for the years it took to learn those commands. - Norlick, on 05/01/2009, -0/+25o.O
I just use Ubuntu cuz its easier to install and update *****, and cuz everythings more consistent.
This whole OSX vs. Win vs. Linux thing is ***** stupid anyways -- all three have their irritating *****, and it just depends on the person as to which OS annoys them the least. - Lurial, on 05/01/2009, -1/+26you wont see windo......oh wait....
- brickbat, on 05/01/2009, -6/+30You bought Vista? With real money?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahaha - Jpatano, on 05/01/2009, -0/+23agreed. my system running vista 64 reboots in about a minute. most people that complain about boot times have themselves to blame. they are the people who have 95 startup apps, and wonder why their PC is so slow to do anything.they're using 90% of their system resources by the time they even see the desktop.
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -3/+24apple will do it... after they get a contract for your firstborn.
- kanojo1969, on 05/01/2009, -4/+25What? It's more or less done. Unless they make some truly earth-shattering improvements after this (which they won't, there hasn't been anything of note changed after RC for a windows OS in the last ten years), I will run it for as long as I can. Buying it isn't an option and this is sure going to be a lot less hassle than all the ***** cracks that will flood the net for months and months after release. Even now there's more broken Vista torrents than working ones.
I'll keep using it until the license runs out.
Anyway, the article mentions 5 to 10 minute boot times for Vista. WTF? Is he running it on a 286? Windows 7 for me has not been *that* much faster than Vista. Although, now I've got it running off a 128g SSD drive, it's hilariously fast. - KAMiKAZOW, on 05/01/2009, -5/+26You are surprised by one-year trials by MS? This is a long habit from them.
- zeth006, on 05/01/2009, -1/+21Hey, goes to show they're doing more these days to revamp their PR.
Last time I was at TGI's, my friend and I saw a Microsoft commercial and an Apple commercial within a span of 10 minutes. - ayeroxor, on 05/01/2009, -9/+29You might want to sit down for this...
"There" and "their": they are different.
"Your" and "you're": they are different.
Yes, I knew what you said.
And it's okay to write like that if you're five. - CPUYODA, on 05/01/2009, -4/+24I've been using the x64 version,...and short of the usual niggles,...it's pretty good.
I disable all the eye candy,..etc....but it does have some pretty neat stuff over XP and vista.
Plus driver support is better this time,...considering it's just mostly tweaked vista drivers now. - kingamoon, on 05/01/2009, -6/+25You're "Buried for inaccurate".
- damack, on 05/01/2009, -1/+20This is the first RC so basically their giving you the first release candidate out of a beta. It basically means your beta testing the operating system for an entire year.
It's like when they gave away the betas for Windows 7. They picked up hundreds of thousands even millions of free beta testers like that.
This is very intelligent cost cutting and mass beta testing. - iancunningham, on 05/01/2009, -4/+23The RC build and "full version" RTM are totally different things. Yes, it's a great way to test an OS that is almost the final article, but don't go calling it a free 1 year version!
If you want to try Windows 7 out without installing it on a fresh drive or dual boot, you can run it within XP/Vista/Linux by using VirtualBox:
http://www.w7forums.com/run-windows-7-virtualbox-t ... - soopafly, on 05/01/2009, -5/+24You mean you guys have to enter in a key to install an OS??
- norman619, on 05/01/2009, -2/+20That's what you get from computer vendors like Dell and HP. You don't know very much about this subject do you?
- EvilFerret, on 05/01/2009, -0/+18That seemed odd to me as well. If I see a system that even takes 2 minutes to boot up, I know there is something seriously wrong.
- cygnus2112, on 05/01/2009, -3/+20mikeliemanmikelieman: "Pop Quiz. You want to print a list of the files in C:\Windows. Let's see... Open in explorer, and then.... *****!"
Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn. Paste in Paint, or whatever, Print. Takes 2-3 seconds.
Or you could just dir * > list.txt and print list.txt
It isn't that challenging, you noob. - dunker, on 05/01/2009, -1/+18But can he write better then you? /s
- norman619, on 05/01/2009, -9/+26Unless you like to play video games and want ALL your WINDOWS applications to run then you'd stick with Windows. You guys keep forgetting one VERY important thing. Linux can't run over 90% of consumer applications. Tehre is no point to moving to Linux if you have to give up the use of modern and popular video games and most, if not all, of the applications you know and love. WINE is not the magical answer to software incompatibility. You guys make me laugh.
- h4ppydotcom, on 05/01/2009, -2/+19That's kind of you to point it out, ayeroxor, but your comment missed out the word damack was looking for - "they're".
"There" and "their": they're different.
"Your" and "you're": they're different too.
I understood what you meant,
but don't write like you're two. - Ravatar, on 05/01/2009, -3/+19Falling for what? Free pre-release stuff?
Aren't all *nix users beta testers in a sense? - mattletron, on 05/01/2009, -0/+15To be fair, not all things downloaded via bittorrent are commercial products. Torrent downloads are a great way to provide for faster downloads for more people with less bandwidth cost for the provider, and so in an instance where a company such as Microsoft is giving away a free download, it could reduce their cost of doing so.
- GothAlice, on 05/01/2009, -9/+23One small step in the right direction of rebuilding their image.
- inactive, on 05/01/2009, -0/+14No.
- TitoBob, on 05/01/2009, -0/+14Or can he write better than you? /s /s
