- Sarki, on 02/11/2008, -14/+100I wish "journalists" would stop making everything about Apple and the iPhone. This deal took weeks if not months to put together, yet they position it as a reaction to this weekend's news about iPhone sales.
- sjbdallas, on 02/11/2008, -5/+50More like Blackberry envy than Apple envy. Danger is closer to RIM than Apple.
- norman619, on 02/11/2008, -9/+45"Microsoft succumbs to Apple envy, buys Danger"
Huh?
Zip up. Your fanboy is showing. - colonels1020, on 02/11/2008, -3/+35Michael: "Dwight, what's your middle name?"
Dwight: "Danger." - masterm1nd, on 02/11/2008, -1/+25Everybody?
- meshman, on 02/11/2008, -13/+35??? 2 button mouse: 2001. Server product: 2002. The portable music player... Who's doing the copying again?
- Brad324, on 02/11/2008, -2/+24it was obviously an impulse buy. Stop using logic.
- Ocelot13, on 02/11/2008, -2/+19In other news...
Apple succumbs to Microsoft envy, revises trademark to include gaming. - ferrariman60, on 02/11/2008, -11/+28Apple envy? Gross. This deal had nothing to do with the iPhone- people always think that Apple and MS are bitter enemies. But they compete in pretty different markets, guys. The only directly comparable market they compete in is the OS- other than that, MS doesn't make any hardware (besides 360 and theyir keyboard/mouse stuff), whereas apple makes all apple hardware. This isn't in response to the iPhone- anyone who got an iPhone won't cross shop an MS phone anyways, no matter how good it may be.
- DivisibleByZero, on 02/11/2008, -1/+18Depends whether they make their own BlackBerry, or a ZunePhone. Despite Apple's claims, the iPhone is more geared towards the consumer electronics crowd than the business crowd.
Besides, Microsoft's already got a pretty good grip on the OS market for smartphones. It would be like if they started making their own PC hardware. - brstilson, on 02/11/2008, -7/+23Microsoft didn't invent the 2 button mouse, server OS, or portable music player. You're committing a Red Herring fallacy, bringing up a topic under the guise that Apple has something to do with this discussion.
- drlha, on 02/11/2008, -7/+20Microsoft and Apple compete in different markets? Why did Microsoft release the Zune then, and not just stick to their previous strategy of providing DRM for other people's devices?
- linkdj, on 02/11/2008, -1/+13...Yeah, but on T-Mobile, that's a completely normal occurrence.
- meghalc, on 02/11/2008, -7/+18Why does everything has to ***** compare to the IPHONE???? IT IS ANNOYING!!!
- ricksite, on 02/11/2008, -0/+11In response to being compared to Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg replied, "'If I made potato chips and put them in a can, people would say I was ripping off Pringles,' he said. 'But what if I put them in a bag?'"
- ThinkFr33ly, on 02/11/2008, -2/+13Apple Envy? Seriously? There have been over 14 MILLION Windows Smartphones sold in the past 6 months alone. The iPhone has sold, at best, 4 million in almost 8 months.
See: http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/11/whats-an-iphone ...
So is this the same envy that Microsoft feels for the Mac?
Get a grip. - thecosmicpope, on 02/11/2008, -5/+13Yeah, but you can't get some childish comments in if you look at the facts. The only reason this has been posted is so some people can wank over Apple products whilst ripping into Microsoft. This is about fanboys first, and facts second.
- chedabob, on 02/11/2008, -4/+12Which is pretty much what Google do, except when Google does it, it's innovation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_acquis ... - kelly, on 02/11/2008, -2/+10The compete on OSes, office suites, phones, Mp3 players, keyboards, mice, video standards... the list goes on and on.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/11/2008, -1/+9Just because you and your friends on iChat think MS is going under doesn't make it so.
- i322, on 02/11/2008, -10/+18Hmmmm, The Sidekick XP, or the Sidekick Vista? Or maybe the Microkick? the possibilities are endless...
THE ZUNEKICK! Sidekick 360? - Asianwaste, on 02/11/2008, -0/+8Remember Xerox also sued Apple for infringing on copyright of their GUI. Both companies don't have the cleanest hands.
- Zammo, on 02/11/2008, -1/+8danger was founded by a bunch of webtv (bought by Microsoft) guys.
- drhamad, on 02/11/2008, -0/+7Every market (that they both have items in) Apple creates hardware in it also creates software in that competes with MS. Every market (that they both have items in) MS creates software in, it creates software for hardware that competes with Apple. Even if they go about it different ways, they bitterly compete in a lot of markets. Even besides the obvious hardware on hardware markets (Zune v iPod), every other market Apple is in, MS is competing in, one way or another.
- djrbx, on 02/11/2008, -7/+13IMO I honesty think M$ can do it. Just look at the Xbox brand. Now I'm not saying the Xbox brand is perfect, far from it, yet it continues to deliver to its customers. It is now considered a major player in the home console market. As far as phones goes, M$ has the ability and funds to do this. Adding to the fact that they already have some experience creating software for the phones, now they just need the hardware to match. The way I see it, the first M$ phone wont be a hit like the iPhone was, but it will prove that M$ has the skills to make it. Just like the Xbox and the Zune, both products sucked at launch, yet people are starting to recognize the products rather than just dissing it because it came from M$
- FredFredrickson, on 02/11/2008, -0/+6Why are they douchebags again? Sometimes I get the idea that people just say this, without any idea why they actually hate MS so much.
- burnblue, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Windows Mobile wasn't their own idea?
- KSUdesigner, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5To be fair, this story was submitted hours ago. Unless a story is huge (this isn't), it takes a while for things to get dugg up to the front page. Digg is not a good source for "live" news.
- MacParrot, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6I'm not actually sure why all the hate exists. If you despise MS products, don't buy them. Obviously there are plenty of customers for them to continue on for quite some time. I prefer Apple for my OS, but I never underestimate the sheer wealth and market share that MS has.
YES, they've done many monopolistic things in the past but they are now under pretty close scrutiny from the Europeans (USDOJ pretty much rolled over for them) so MS now tries to be careful.
Competition spurs innovation. Sometimes smaller companies being bought out by bigger ones can create new opportunities. Doubt this? Apple's resurgence began when they bought a near defunct company called NeXT. - FredFredrickson, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6Apple purchased the core system of their OS from another company.
- KillPenguin, on 02/11/2008, -4/+9I might have thought you were remotely intelligent, but using the term "M$" pretty much makes you the lowest form of life on the planet. Also, the Zune was pretty good at launch, and the Xbox was always great.
- Darcy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Do you apply this same reasoning to Google? Other than their search engine, can you name me one product they have out that they didn't buy?
Do you ever attack Apple for copying technology, and not innovating themselves? Apple are the masters at taking existing technology, adding their own special gloss, then making their loyal fans believe they're buying something designed and built by god. - iofthestorm, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Sidekick 360 actually sounds kind of cool, almost like a roundhouse kick.
- linkdj, on 02/11/2008, -0/+5Yeah, but lately they've been focusing on increasing the user experience on Windows Mobile (see link), and that's one thing that the Sidekicks had down from day 1.
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/what.s-wrong-with-windo ... - JoeWix, on 02/11/2008, -31/+36The industry is changing. Google is now arguably the leading edge in a world where computers and the internet are forever blended. Microsoft knows that its days of selling products like it's office suite at a ridiculously high price, are numbered. Google is now markets an office suite (Google Apps) which it 'leases' for about $50/year, which can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. Meanwhile, Google itself rakes in it's profits from the advertising revenues generated by its websites.
Microsoft is wisely trying to buy the only other company, somewhat similar in structure, with which to compete with the internet giant.
As Apple's iPhone (and soon, Google's somewhat similar phone) are illustrating, communications are no longer bound to either a phone or a computer, but will be a critical part of both, via the ether. Microsoft is only doing what any smart company does when it wants to enter market, and can afford to waste neither the time or money on building from the ground up. A similar business model would be BMW's acquisition and then resale of Land Rover a few years back. (Land Rover/Jaguar has recently been purchased by Tah-Tah in India from Ford, for similar reasons) It is so much more cost efficient to buy a company for it's technology, and then sell it again, than it is to build from 'zero'. BMW's entry into the SUV market was based upon this strategy. The X5 is the product of that business strategy.
Now whether Microsoft can do what BMW did and improve upon the purchased company and become the competitive leader, remains to be seen. They seem to have a track record of making the purchase, but not spring-boarding forward from it.
Either way, it's a brilliant business move from the folks in Redmond, and should help Microsoft to move into the future successfully.
Me? Personally, I prefer Apple, but I think competition can only help the market and especially the creative and quality sides of R&D throughout the industry.
JW - Asianwaste, on 02/11/2008, -1/+6Last time I checked they aren't doing so bad. If anything their trend seems to go up. They are taking a bad dip right now because they are spending money on acquisitions, but really the big picture, they are just evened out from where they were last year.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=MSFT&t=5y - norman619, on 02/11/2008, -2/+7Jealousy? Care to share where that is true?
- Stalks, on 02/11/2008, -3/+7Zunekick ... or the drop-kick.
- Myztry, on 02/11/2008, -1/+5You've got to go back to to 1985 and the Commodore Amiga to find out where Microsoft got a lot of it's inspiration.
Two button mouse (click and menu), preemptive multitasking, hardware graphics acceleration, hardware driver support, multiple desktops, cross program copy and paste, event driven message queues, dynamic memory allocations, graphical command line prompt, program shortcuts icons, SUPER key functions and menu select, etc, etc, etc...
Apple is by no means the only company Microsoft has copied off. - bowe, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Ya think, maybe that's why they bought them?
- estvir, on 02/12/2008, -0/+4Wow, wow, WOW.. even for the average Digg user your stupidity is astounding.
- knightboat, on 02/11/2008, -2/+6"initiative," "spurred losses," "chagrin of shareholders," "provider"
I almost got an armchair analyst cliches Bingo. - D3koy, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4You must be one of the 15 other people in the world who bought the n-gage.....nice to meet a fellow sucker
- TheChunt, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4That first sentence in the article summary is far and away the douchiest thing I have read all day.
- Asianwaste, on 02/11/2008, -2/+6"??? 2 button mouse: 2001. Server product: 2002. The portable music player..."
2005: Mighty mouse was Apple's 2 button mouse
2002: Apple Panther Server
2001: Apple Ipod
Read through the implications. - Nicksname1, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4Would you like to elaborate as to why?
- artisresistance, on 02/11/2008, -3/+7Where was Apple mentioned?
- LeeSoong, on 02/11/2008, -0/+4ha ha ha ...
why not just update the ZUNE with an LG phone built in all running off of the Sprint network ? - norman619, on 02/11/2008, -1/+4Ignorance is bliss I guess.
- superkendall, on 02/11/2008, -2/+5Who didn't see this coming, with the precedent of Microsoft screwing over digital music parters by releasing the Zune? It was only a matter of time before the Zunified their phone efforts as well and Zuned companies foolish enough to base their mobile devices on Windows Mobile.
