- Stobes, on 11/05/2008, -5/+67Wow, all people do is bitch. I for one like what I've seen so far with Windows 7... lets just hope all the announcements make it to the final product.
- Adam420, on 11/03/2008, -8/+66This will be nice!
- pumah, on 11/05/2008, -6/+51Wow, Word opened up fast. I, for one, am impressed.
- LMN8R, on 11/05/2008, -5/+44Small icons vs. large icons is the only thing similar. There is nothing at all like Aero Peak in OS X.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -4/+38Here's the FULL video via Channel9: http://channel9.msdn.com/pdc2008/PC24/
- LMN8R, on 11/05/2008, -5/+33Small icons and text labels are optional. Chill the ***** out.
- nickycakes, on 11/05/2008, -6/+34Actually looks pretty cool and useful. Swarm of retarded mac fanbois please feel free to bury this comment.
- illt, on 11/05/2008, -7/+25i believe windows has had this feature in the taskbar since before osx.. quicklaunch anyone?
- illt, on 11/05/2008, -3/+19sorry, but this taskbar looks way better than the dock.
I find the dock cumbersome, as i'm used to having all my open windows accessible through the taskbar.
that peek feature looks great! cant' wait. - omnichronic, on 11/04/2008, -7/+21I think Windows 7 just has bigger icons and puts less emphasis on text. It's similar to the way Mac OS X emphasizes programs in the dock, but I don't think it's copying since it came from a minor change in the design.
- Dubbsacc, on 11/05/2008, -2/+16Word opens so fast on my PC I can't even count to 1 in my head. This is Office 2007.
Maybe your computer just sucks. - MedaFighterX, on 11/05/2008, -8/+22God these comments are horrible. Nothing but Linux fanboys, Mac users and the uneducated dolts that think their 5 year old computers should run Vista well. This is going to be one big buryfest in the end but I for one like the new taskbar and will use it as much as I use the thumbnails in the Vista taskbar. People just need to learn that Microsoft doesn't need to please all of you, you'll all end up buying it anyway.
- theberlindoctor, on 11/05/2008, -2/+14The level of retardedness in these comments is just staggering.
- ultraseamus, on 11/05/2008, -0/+11Come one now, how can you end a video with "lets talk about the number one feature request..." now I will never know! Porn steamed straight to your desktop, or maybe porn videos in words documents? It could be anything, and I will never know.
- digitalpencil, on 11/05/2008, -5/+16I'm aware that all dock style interfaces originate with Nextstep and Windows 1.0 but i just don't care.. I don't care if MS have adopted features from other operating systems as long as they are well implemented, enhance overall usability and are not blatant rip-offs.
I am predominately an OS X user although I do use both XP and Ubuntu on a regular basis as well and I have to say, Win7 is shaping up great. People need to quit whinging about them 'stealing' ideas from competitors as there's lots that each operating system can learn from each other. For example, i'm hoping that OS X/Compiz will adopt the half-maximize feature exhibited in Win7 as widescreen displays are becoming increasingly prevalent and being able to maximize documents side-by-side will be a much coveted feature.
Personally though, i'm really looking forward to the smaller resource footprint coming with Win7. I don't use Vista as it offers me no new functionality at a performance loss so I don't see the point. If Win7 is to incorporate Virtual Folders and WinFS though with little sacrifice in overall performance, I will definitely be upgrading! - kingofthisnight, on 11/05/2008, -3/+14When you said "And buried." were you referring to your comment?
- Rowan187, on 11/05/2008, -3/+12I was completely skeptical of Windows 7 at first. But the more I see, the more I like.... hopefully they don't mess it up by the time of release date though
- theberlindoctor, on 11/05/2008, -0/+9Apparently, you dont understand much about UI control.
- toxicityj, on 11/05/2008, -3/+12http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v644/toxicityj/U ... look familiar? I've been able to do my start bar like that since at least XP.
- phroztbyt3, on 11/05/2008, -3/+12windows7 is what vista should have been. you can run the os on 256mb of ram.... now THAT is impressive.
- TheBlueVulcan, on 11/05/2008, -2/+11Because hovering your cursor over an icon is complicated? I switched from Windows to OSX about 6 months ago and love it, but OSX is not perfect, and expose, while cool, is damn annoying when you have 20 windows open and can't tell what is what, although is is sublime for a smaller amount.
However, I think Microsoft found a really good compromise with this. Since you know what program you want, just hover and click to the window. I think it's quite an elegant solution. - LMN8R, on 11/05/2008, -5/+14Why the hell would you want Microsoft to rewrite Windows from scratch? You realize that that's essentially what they did with Vista, right? They basically re-wrote Windows from scratch to be componentized, essentially allowing Windows 7's enhancements to happen.
What would be the point? What, at all, would be the gain of "starting over from scratch"? Vista has become a stable, reliable, compatible platform, and it would be ***** stupid to throw that all away for even more compatibility and driver problems. - cmer, on 11/05/2008, -9/+18I'm a big fan of OS X and an even bigger hater of Windows, but I have to admit this quick peek thing is very slick. Apple, can you copy it please? I think MS owes you one or two anyways...
- LMN8R, on 11/05/2008, -5/+13What is "bloated" about the kernel? I assume that since you're making these claims, you have facts to back them up?
What would be the benefit of getting rid of the registry? It sucks balls, but it doesn't slow down your system, and for backwards compatibility, something as complicated as the registry or worse would have to take its place.
Not everyone is as lucky with a tiny installed base as Apple to go and ***** over their installed base. I don't think 600 million people using Windows would be happy to be forced into buying all new hardware, peripherals, and software. - renegadeafk, on 11/05/2008, -4/+11You are an idiot windows has had this feature for AGES with quick launch...
- FredFredrickson, on 11/05/2008, -3/+10The dock is a terrible replacement for the taskbar. I use Macs all day, so trust me, I know.
- pumah, on 11/05/2008, -5/+12You are right, my computer does suck. These new MacbookPros suck ass.
- groo68, on 11/05/2008, -2/+9you can drag and drop in xp. I hope windows 7 has an option for just little icons on the side, and all open windows in the main bar. having all open windows in the bottom bar is one of the reasons i dont have a mac. in a mac you get lots of pictures of all the windows you have open, but you have to move to each one to distinguish them.
- filipf, on 11/05/2008, -2/+9As much as I hate Microsoft, I have to give this one to them. This new taskbar has nothing to do with the Dock. Checkout their full-length presentation http://channel9.msdn.com/pdc2008/PC24 around time 4:00. They have a screenshot of Windows 1.0 with a taskbar that looks just like it (except for all the fancy graphics, that is).
Also check their PowerPoint slides: http://mschnlnine.vo.llnwd.net/d1/pdc08/PPTX/PC24. ... - EntropyFan, on 11/05/2008, -3/+10It seems more like a 'super' quick launch tool bar. Maybe that is where OSX copied it from?
- ertz, on 11/05/2008, -12/+19It just looks like an over sized quick launch bar to me...
- benologist, on 11/05/2008, -0/+7Real links would be nice too:
http://www.neowin.net/news/live/08/10/28/windows-7 ... - CalcProgrammer1, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6Good news, you can. This feature has been implemented already.
- Yazilliclick, on 11/05/2008, -1/+7You get a preview if you mouse over icons in your quick launch? Don't think so unless you have a third party tool installed. You get previews over your taskbar not the quick launch. This seems to be an improved combination of the two.
- seedsofwar, on 11/05/2008, -3/+9"They basically re-wrote Windows from scratch..."
no they didn't - roxgod666, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6I believe you are mistaken. You are using "guide" as a noun opposed to the title using "guided" as an adjective. This changes the meaning of the entire sentence as it is actually a "tour". I furthermore declare you retarded.
- dullnation, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6Hows about actually watch the demo...
There is no "quicklaunch" bar now, the whole taskbar is a launcher. You click on an app that you want to run and rather than add a new entry into the taskbar for each window that opens, a little square appears around the application that you clicked on. To select induvidual windows, you mouse over the apps icon and you get a bunch of preview windows and click on the window you want. - pupppet, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6And in OS 10.0, Apple implemented the "taskbar".
- Kazbaeden, on 11/05/2008, -2/+7That's superfectch for you. You know, one of those worthless features in vista.
- alexanderhorre, on 11/05/2008, -11/+16Get rid of the registry.
Get rid of the bloat that is the kernel. - ExSlashdotter, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5first of all, its called quick look, preview is an app that simply opens a host of simple formats.
quick look lets you see a file without having to open the file in its native app.
peek lets you see active/running windows. - TravisOwens, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6And you think everybody wouldn't throw a fit if the next monthly updates suddenly changed how your taskbar works?
Not to mention MS announced a long time ago they don't add new functionality via updates, they try to fix problems and improve security. They do add minor functionality sometimes, but even then, it somehow revolves around security (read the SP3 changes and you'll see the new features are always security related). - CalcProgrammer1, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6There are already 32 and 64 bit editions (separate). I doubt you'll be able to have something that is both 32 and 64 (64 bit is sorta already there, 64 bit OS'es run 32 bit apps, but as for 32 bit drivers, I don't think it's possible to use 32 bit drivers in 64 bit OS'es, and it's definitely impossible to use 64 bit drivers in 32 bit OS'es, so drivers are pretty much out of the question).
- CLShortFuse, on 11/05/2008, -2/+7Windows + Tab on Vista?
- mrsteveman1, on 11/05/2008, -2/+7The change is in the fact that now that "quicklaunch" icon IS the running application which is similar to OS X.
Before you clicked that QL button it was just a link, now it is the app. - fibreoptix, on 11/05/2008, -1/+6My question is will it be 32 bit and 64 bit at the same time?
- Fartag, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5Probably with Digg and its inability to prevent MS astroturfing?
But, who knows? - Samtherocker, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5I don't think that Microsoft technically needed to create a new OS however, Vista's reputation is already too tarnished for people to believe it can 'suck less' after a software update.
Microsoft want to recover their losses with Windows 7; revenue and loyalty losses. -
