- AnarchyIsOrder1, on 11/23/2008, -3/+152Stupid update removed my copy of "Ultimate Antivirus 2008", forcing me to go download it again.
- abajaj2280, on 11/23/2008, -9/+82Microsoft: Having to save a million idiots last month.
- Nephersir7, on 11/23/2008, -5/+74Whats up with Microsoft lately? They are starting to become the good company they once were...
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -1/+58Bravo, Microsoft, indeed. I know some savvy PC users who have been unable to remove these programs on their own.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -3/+42This is exactly why I use Eset Nod 32. But still... Bravo to Microsoft.
- twiztidsinz, on 11/23/2008, -9/+35Microsoft: Having more than a million users.
- mk2ja, on 11/23/2008, -1/+23I work at the Helpdesk at my college, and we get several people coming in every week with those AntiVirus 2008/9 viruses. It's so annoying because so many students don't even realize that they have a virus, especially one so well-named. Anyway, our policy for any kind of malware is just to reload the institute image. *shrug* Always works, that's for sure. Maybe this patch will help some folks get rid of it on their own instead of just having us reimage it.
- iofthestorm, on 11/23/2008, -0/+22*whoosh*
- evilesttoast, on 11/23/2008, -5/+26Do you think OSX and Linux are immune? Windows has a massive marketshare, therefore, more malware for Windows.
- NoMiT, on 11/23/2008, -1/+18Yeah removing that junk from 1 million peoples pcs...... what a waste of time.......
- skyroket, on 11/23/2008, -0/+16Link plz... it says I'm infected again, so I need to redownload as well. Windows Defender won't let me go to the page to get it, so I guess I will go there manually.
- Sokkratez, on 11/23/2008, -1/+16Awesome. I can't begin to count how many laptops I've been handed to fix that had several of these fake programs running at once. People will click on anything if a popup asks nicely or with sufficient urgency.
- diggafrica, on 11/23/2008, -7/+22GJ big Mike!, Microsoft has a good heart overall, you just have to see past the cloud of hate created by the linux, apple & hater fanboys. When you are ambitious, they call you Greedy, When you are unambitious, they call you lazy.
- pirategonzo, on 11/23/2008, -1/+15Bah, there goes about 10% of my business. I loved that virus because everyone installed it and it was simple to remove.
- LanceUppercut, on 11/23/2008, -5/+19Nice :). Way to do the right thing.
Waiting for digg to spin this into a Windows 7 PR stunt. They really can do some really nice stuff when they put their mind to it.
Xbox 360. - asgardshill, on 11/23/2008, -2/+14I had a PC come through my shop with this fake anti-virus software last week. Between updated Ad Aware and Spybot S&D, removing it was child's play. Still, kudos to Microserf for at least trying to bail out the lifeboat.
- Zantive, on 11/23/2008, -1/+11No, dumbass.
- Hortnon, on 11/23/2008, -3/+13You fit the Apple user stereotype very well, bravo. I'd be surprised if you actually understood some of the very basic reasons Unix *can* be more secure.
- chillypacman, on 11/23/2008, -3/+13It's called PR.
They're actually giving a damn about what people think about them, rather than just providing decent services they're bragging about it. - infiniphunk, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9but will it run Bonzi Buddy?
- Denominator88, on 11/23/2008, -0/+8I see these Anti-Virus 2008 infections at least once a week. However the variants change so fast, I really hope that Microsoft will keep up.
- Appleologist, on 11/23/2008, -9/+17Competition.
- BinaryFragger, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9I agree, it's a good thing Linux and OS X never require security updates. Oh wait...

- shawnz, on 11/23/2008, -2/+9so if i wrote a fake antivirus program for macs, would that make your statement invalid?
- Gizza, on 11/23/2008, -0/+7Go ask your mum what msconfig is and you should get your answer.
- headband, on 11/23/2008, -0/+7wait until they come by now
"my anti virus, it was here yesterday but now it has disappeared" - youannoyme, on 11/23/2008, -8/+14They are not immune no, and the market share phenomenon does play a role. But in general Linux/Mac just has more robust security. It's just one of the reasons why Linux owns in the world of the server. The servers are in a position where they need to care more about being hacked/infected than an average home user.
- Hortnon, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6If only it were that easy...
Some of these programs are very...enthusiastic. msconfig by itself doesn't do much in those cases. - mhearne, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6I use AVG for Linux on the server so that the viruses get whacked before they ever reach the Windows machines. Everything goes through Postfix and it works very well.
That, plus a solid firewall (Shorewall) and a transparent proxy (Squid), and we are fairly well protected here.
Can't help the poor sucker who goes to the teen porno sites and gets had by "Mother's Against Pervs", but I figure they deserve what they get, since they won't tell the truth about what happened. - Sil369, on 11/23/2008, -2/+7huh ? i googled it and all i see are remove links to it
- pureopium, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5I see these programs on a day to day basis working as a computer technician, and some of these programs like this, for example XP Antivirus 2009, can be extremely damaging to a computer and can also prevent you from installing protection software or even accessing the internet. We don't usually have problems getting them off, but the real problem is dealing with the damages it causes to an operating system.
- thefinger, on 11/23/2008, -1/+6So excellent! Thank you Microsoft. This is how to be a good internet citizen.
- willrs, on 11/23/2008, -2/+6well, garrybarker, sorry to bust your little OSX bubble, but, millions of people do actually use windows operating systems. unfortunately they all have their problems, but MS is actually doing a good job fixing them for once.
and all of its users should be happy and thankful that they are getting ***** done. - burnerz, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4Fair play to that
- Hortnon, on 11/23/2008, -2/+6Be a fanboy more, please
- Giga, on 11/23/2008, -3/+7I beg to differ. At least it isn't fake.
- mr5150, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4bravo MS for once you have a taken a pro active stance with your OS with rogue AV malware even though even though your about 2 years too late i s'pose it's better that nothing.
- theclaw1, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Part of why those OSes are more secure is architecture differences, the other part is having astronomically fewer people attempting to exploit it with malicious intent.
- jakem1, on 11/23/2008, -2/+5@DelMonte: You obviously don't know what you're talking about. Microsoft have been releasing malicious software removal tools for years now (probably since XP SP2 was released).
@mictester: You're a tool. - meinrosebud, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4he he...*blink blink*
- skyroket, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3Yes it's a joke. Jesus Christ, guys.
- Vich, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3I was eagerly waiting to see how the anti-microsoft digger would spin this around. I half expected a critique of how evil microsoft was putting malware companies out of business in a monopolistic manner.
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4your not one of human kinds strong points
- eviljolly, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3I think this is referring to the new Smitfraud variants. Combofix is ineffective against them.
- chillypacman, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Basic marketting really, do you target linux/os x which at best controls like 10% of the desktop market or do you go for the big one?
- falcon707, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2This is why I use a Mac.
- Waterrat, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2And why I use Linux.
Ive seen that fake spy ware 3 times while surfing the web in the last 6 months. - burnerz, on 11/23/2008, -1/+3But then the average user would be more clueless after a linux distro is installed. Heck, even windows power users would need some sort of training on how to maintain the distro and use the terminal.
- MasterPain, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2I don't think this patch removes Xp antivirus 2009 and that is a very bad one. I see it occasionally when searching google. The only way to avoid it is to close the browser with task manager. But avast free catches it also.
