- CommonSense2k8, on 05/25/2009, -14/+275Maybe if Microsoft had better web services they wouldn't need to spend 80 Million on Ads...
- MacParrot, on 05/25/2009, -39/+256Microsoft: This is Valerie.
Valerie wants to use a search engine to find information on how ducks quack
We told Valerie that if she could find a search engine for under $1000, she could keep the difference
Valerie: Well, I just Googled it and then kept your money since Google is free
Microsoft:... - cplusplus, on 05/25/2009, -3/+203I like the minimal design
http://www.bing.com/ - zatyka, on 05/25/2009, -5/+182Microsoft is completely wasting their money. Goggle has become synonymous with searching online, and no company is going to touch that unless they either offer a vastly superior product (which I highly doubt), or Google does something to sour their relationship with it's customers (which I also highly doubt). Bye 80 million.
- Beautyon, on 05/25/2009, -16/+145What could you, as a software developer do with 80 million? How many startups could you fund with 80 million?
This is why microsoft is full of FAIL. THey are thinking like oil barons instead of fleet footed entrepreneurs. They havent even got the sense to hire entrepreneurs.
Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out M$. Or let it, we don't give a *****. - sparkplug890, on 05/25/2009, -3/+115I guess they were inspired by Cuil's success at taking down Goo-- oh, wait.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -25/+130Maybe because competitors are attacking Microsoft in their ads? You've never seen any of Apple's commercials, have you?
This actually a counterattack by Microsoft. - jeffness, on 05/25/2009, -3/+103Take $80 million and figure out how to make your search services work first, and then advertise.
I am not dedicated to the google, it just works better. I have tried MSN search, it is *****. I can't find anything useful using MSN, especially not technical information. I work as an IT consultant and about step 2 or 3 of my troubleshooting method is taking whatever error I am having and slapping it into google. This includes BSOD error codes or even Microsoft office error codes.
Guess where I get good results that help me fix the problem? Google. MSN, even when I am searching on errors for Microsoft products, returns ***** results that are always completely different than what I am looking for, always seems to be more marketing related consumer ***** than technical forums where others have solved the problem I am having..
But like I said, the day I can goto MSN.com, type in a search and get what I want, I am there. There's no brand loyalty with most anyone. Make it work and people will use it. No marketing can fix the problem currently there. - ekso, on 05/25/2009, -35/+132Why Microsoft marketing mostly attack other companies products instead of promoting their own?
- MrJagil, on 05/25/2009, -4/+86but google?
- wibambau, on 05/25/2009, -1/+75Bing it Microsoft, Bing it!
- 3242130193, on 05/25/2009, -3/+72Chairs will fly.
- SniperZero, on 05/25/2009, -5/+64Microsoft why don't you just forget about the web? Make windows 7 into a master piece and continue with the 360 and you can't go wrong...
- dygel, on 05/25/2009, -8/+66Yeah. Vista was a run-away success, the 360 division isn't plagued by the ongoing expense of poor hardware design anymore, IE8 is the new gold standard for the web, Silverlight has all but replaced Flash ... nothing but good news for Microsoft!
What is the name of your zany alternate dimension? More importantly: am I superhero there? - K0MMIE, on 05/25/2009, -6/+63Did you get paid well to spout that Corporate *****?
- DreamVsPs2, on 05/25/2009, -1/+52Hi I'm a Google and I'm a Live Serach.
- xerexes1, on 05/25/2009, -0/+49Perhaps we are all just missing the point. Maybe it's a telepathic search, no need for an old school keyboard or smeared touch screen.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -9/+56No.
- Cupantae, on 05/25/2009, -3/+49Why?!
They finally get over the whole Vista debacle and now they want to look foolish again? - sodoh, on 05/25/2009, -0/+44humour is lost on some people.I lol'ed.
- nextekcarl, on 05/25/2009, -0/+42That's what it would take to dethrone google at this point.
- pe5t1lence, on 05/25/2009, -1/+43No, no. He is a Serach, the most deadly of internet creatures. If it wasn't for that Google there our computers would all be destroyed. To see one alive is a unique experience!
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -5/+43Yahoo was never good, People used it because it was the only option back then. Google has always had a better product and thats the reason people picked them.
- bradleyland, on 05/25/2009, -0/+36I've been staring at the screen thinking "porn porn porn porn porn porn" for the last thirty minutes, and I have nothing but a raging erection to show for it. Wait. It works, it works!
- TheNyquilKid, on 05/25/2009, -2/+37Good job Valerie, you will need that money to upgrade from Vista to 7, make sure to hold onto a few hundred.
- HairyPoter, on 05/25/2009, -4/+37they should spend their money improving their crappy products. If their products were good they would sell naturally, not get dust in shelves like vista.
- tomato1324, on 05/25/2009, -1/+34bill doesnt run MS anymore
- stealthspc, on 05/25/2009, -2/+34That would just be too simple.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -7/+38Also continue with a Better Zune. We desperately need someone to give apple a kick in the ballz when it comes to the locked down iPod, the same way sony got a kick in the nuts this gen in the console wars.
- Wayfarer12, on 05/25/2009, -0/+30Can anyone else think of a better use for $80,000,000?!
Seriously, Microsoft. WTF. Talk about a big waste of money. - inactive, on 05/25/2009, -3/+33Ads? What ads?
- Truckondo, on 05/25/2009, -3/+32Leave Google alone!!!
- CommonSense2k8, on 05/25/2009, -4/+33I have and it sucks in comparison... Given, Google is far from perfect, but no other search engine compares.
- sodoh, on 05/25/2009, -4/+33I tried it before but as someone else already mentioned when I want to say find out the details to an error message I don't want the first 20 hits to be marketing crap.
On the off chance it may of gotten better I tried just now.
As a test I typed in "java.lang.outofmemoryexception". I picked this as I guess there will be a lot of pages with this (bug reports, etc). But for me the relevance should be what does it mean.
Google.
1: not relevent (someone asking for help)
2: Tutorial on what it is.
3: Javadoc 1.4.2
4: Javadoc 5
The rest were not that relevant. But I get what I want in the first 5.
Livesearch.
I went up to page 7 and could not find any article relevant. - inactive, on 05/25/2009, -16/+43Note to self : Ignore anything that has to do with Bing.
Not because of spite, but because I'd be an idiot to leave Google just because someone has more money than they do, - CoreyTamas, on 05/25/2009, -2/+26Despite what they'd like you to think, they haven't kicked Google's ass yet.
- bsmang, on 05/25/2009, -1/+24Bing? What Bing? I tried going to bing.com and not only could it not find a page to display, it couldn't even find an error message to display in the absence of a page.
- neio, on 05/25/2009, -0/+23What he said ^^^^. Google is awesome for searching for error codes and solutions.
- inactive, on 05/25/2009, -0/+23No ping from bing.
- mhuggins, on 05/25/2009, -1/+23Wow, I forgot all about Cuil. Thanks for the lol ;)
- Roland21, on 05/25/2009, -7/+28Microsoft looks more an more desperate.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 05/25/2009, -6/+27Responding to Apple's ads was a huge mistake. Thing is, Apple is the little guy attacking the big guy. When the big guy fires back, he acknowledges that the little guy is a viable threat.
- freezo1994, on 05/25/2009, -0/+21*Search
- vfred, on 05/25/2009, -9/+30Just like Yahoo 10 years ago. I mean who can detrone them? Do you yahoo?
- zbeast, on 05/25/2009, -2/+22Microsoft seems to be missing the point of search. it's not how much you spend on advertising, it's about
what you give back to the searcher. The only feature that Microsoft has that is better than Google is MSN's
image search is better. Just a little bit better, not better enough to make with switch to MSN's for all my search's
it's image presentation is just a little bit better. Google could fix there image search with a minor changes.
- Xplorer, on 05/25/2009, -4/+23Maybe if this was 1999 and not 2009.....
Waste some more money on bad commercials M$..... - sodoh, on 05/25/2009, -1/+20I can see the advertising company now...
"Mac users use Google! Do you want to be like a Mac user?" - grahamj1978, on 05/25/2009, -17/+35Of course, Microsoft's counterattacks tend to fail. (or be counterattacked themselves - see Apple)
- CoreyTamas, on 05/25/2009, -6/+24...and, sadly, you'll have Microsoft to thank for lack of viable alternatives.
- roxgod666, on 05/25/2009, -5/+23If Microsoft dies, i will move to Linux.
