- localzuk, on 08/31/2008, -5/+51Strange idea, considering the hundreds of existing sites where windows mobile users can get apps. And the fact that anyone can produce apps, without having to get them vetted.
- jwdav, on 09/01/2008, -20/+64Microsoft is really closing the gap on copying Apple - they usually wait 3-5 years.
- c010rb1indusa, on 08/31/2008, -6/+36Competition really is a good thing, looks like Microsoft is starting to get it's act together with it's mobile os, bout time.
- jakem1, on 09/01/2008, -6/+33Apple didn't invent the idea of a program that allows you to download other programs to your phone over the web. Handango's InHand client has been doing this on WinMo phones since 2005. Nokia have had Download! on their phones for years too.
Once again, Apple's only claim to fame is the fact that they are able to market their products better than anyone else.
Just because others have done this before doesn't mean that Microsoft can't have a go. Handango currently take a whopping 40% commission on all sales through their site so it would be great for developers and great for Windows Mobile if Microsoft could introduce their own service at a low price.
Anyway, last time I checked Microsoft have been in the mobile phone business a lot longer than Apple. Does that mean that Apple were copying Microsoft when they brought out the iPhone? Did they copy Palm OS when they decided to go with their icon interface? Everyone copies everyone else - there are very few original ideas - and lets just hope that Microsoft does a good job of this. - doiveo, on 09/01/2008, -2/+26Don't you find those sites really spammy however? As a Treo owner, I would really appreciate some help weeding through the unvetted crap out there. If this works, it might be more profitable to make mobile apps. This should should lead to lower prices and better support.
- strevoir, on 09/01/2008, -3/+16Its just a codename,sucker
- Radan, on 09/01/2008, -1/+13Though, you know what really bothers me? Even though Apple obviously weren't the first ones to deliver an AppStore like system, hadn't it been for the iPhone Microsoft wouldn't even bother releasing anything like that. It seems like they only develop the absolute minimum of what it takes to sell their devices. Why didn't they do this before the iPhone? They could have released this five years ago!
- xieodeluxed, on 09/01/2008, -3/+15buried, not a palin story.
seriously! >_> - ACiDGRiM, on 09/01/2008, -2/+13lol, on my 2 year contract, I got one of the best HTC phones for just $200.
- batmanz, on 09/01/2008, -2/+13I think that they should first worry about readying Windows Mobile for an App store.
- Pfkninenines, on 09/01/2008, -1/+11I'm not saying that Windows Mobile phones are better than the iPhone, but if Microsoft doesn't compete, you'll always think the iPhone is the best.
I'd rather have other options rather than being stuck with one good phone. Hell, I'd take a Windows Mobile phone over Apple just so I don't have to be on AT&T (and I'm not just saying that because I live in one of the two states that AT&T doesn't have mobile coverage) - toetagger, on 09/01/2008, -6/+14hahahahahahahahahahaha!
- gquaglia, on 09/01/2008, -6/+13They are not even close. They may want to start with the clunky interface. Its their product, yet HTC and others are the ones innovating by skinning over MS's horrible interface with something workable and modern.
- c010rb1indusa, on 09/01/2008, -0/+7Oh I agree with you I'm just saying MS never really had to worry about it's interface being clunky before cause there wasn't any other choices, unless you consider the Palm OS a real competitor but let's get real.
- ferrariman60, on 09/01/2008, -3/+10You can't just copy an app store in 2 months, this kind of project has to be in progress for quite a while before they plan to release it. Which is this fall. I mean, come on now.
- Ymeg, on 09/01/2008, -1/+8Psssh, yeah!
Honestly, they have been doing this for quite some time. I mean, they sell items and stuff! They obviously ***** ripped that off the other companies. - santaliqueur, on 09/01/2008, -2/+9It's not popular.
- louiebaur, on 09/01/2008, -2/+8Agreed
- VyRuZ, on 09/01/2008, -4/+10The comments on that page as well as this one reek of stupidity.
- GliTCH82, on 09/01/2008, -1/+7It's about damn time that Microsoft did this. I find it rather sad that it took another cue from Apple for them to realize this could work.
- Drizzit, on 09/01/2008, -0/+6Wake me when Microsoft actually gets companies to put out updates to the OS. With the iPhone you get updates. I have never had a Windows Mobile device that received any OS updated. Had a dell axim, want os update get new axim. My phones were the same way. OS Updates were held back to sell new hardware.
- gquaglia, on 09/01/2008, -4/+10And it will be as popular as the Zune.
- pintomp3, on 09/01/2008, -2/+8i've been buying apps for my windows mobile phone for years. the apps store was the whole internet.
- hamishmacdonald, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5Hear hear. I just switched from using Windows Mobile for about eight years to using an iPhone 3G. Good God, but this thing is so much easier to use. And apps cost me 59 pence, not $12.99 or $19.99.
At these prices, I've no idea how many little apps I've loaded, because you don't have to think twice about it. But with the prices for WM apps, you really have to be committed. And these iPhone apps are really useful, too.
The main difference is that the iPhone is clearly a lifestyle/daily life device whereas Windows Mobile is a business platform. But when my work changed and I needed a full PC for my mobile computing, and I didn't need my mobile to be an all-singing, all-dancing office, I started to admit the limitations of Windows Mobile, then get increasingly annoyed that I'd put up with such a crap system for so long, which was only ever upgraded in tiny increments -- each of which required me to buy a whole new device to ever see. - Radan, on 09/01/2008, -0/+5It doesn't even exist in four fifths of the world.
Here in Sweden it's even a running joke that the word "Zune" sounds like some leet speak variant of the rather ridiculously sounding name "Sune". - Galaxylander, on 09/01/2008, -2/+7We've known about Apple's app store much longer than 2 months...
- Raian, on 09/01/2008, -1/+6When is Windows Mobile Me coming out?
- supermanred, on 09/01/2008, -0/+4My iPhone cost $200 with a 2 year contract.
- r3zonance, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Well personally, I've always found Windows Mobile software sites to be a plethora of absolute crapware. You can waste hours trying to find a suitable app for a purpose, and the best one is usually rubbish anyway.
A bit like most (but not all) Windows software/shareware/freeware. - Radan, on 09/01/2008, -1/+5Well, Apple are rarely the ones who create something first, they merely improve a promising often non commercialised concept and release it.
Apple might not have been the first ones, but it's still rather obvious where Microsoft got the idea from. Hadn't Apple released the AppStore Microsoft wouldn't even think about releasing something like this.
However, I'm not really complaining seeing how this only benefit the end user, both iPhone (with more competition Apple needs to keep improving) and Windows Mobile users. - mprender, on 09/01/2008, -0/+4Actually, I think it's a good idea. Sure, there's a lot of Windows Mobile marketplaces out there already, but Microsoft will have the ability to add their marketplace app to all Windows Mobile devices. So now, new users don't have to google for "pocket pc software," learn how to install a .cab file, or even install ActiveSync on their computers (if they don't need to sync anything else)...
From Microsoft's standpoint, they're able to make money while making these devices easier to use in terms of finding and installing software. - r3zonance, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4"in fact it just might make matters worse because Windows Mobile software is run on MANY different chipsets, so you may find a really nice app that only works with Atom processors (IE: It wont work with OMAP or PPC or ARM chipsets)"
Yet again, another way the diverse hardware configs etc. will bite MS in the ass. - c010rb1indusa, on 09/01/2008, -0/+4You mean like the magazine in the back of your airplane seat...YEAH great name.
- tugger, on 09/01/2008, -3/+7Whats a zune?
- Reynardine, on 09/01/2008, -5/+9Start worrying when Microsoft announces "Skynet".
- BigCalhoun, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4It depends where you go. I've always used PocketGear to get Windows Mobile software and found it a pleasent shopping experience with plenty of quality apps to choose from. As far as vetting, that's where I think device specific forums come into play. They tend to keep a list of what software works and what doesn't and you can find plenty of user experiences with a variety of apps.
For my Treo 700w, I've never had to use much outside of PocketGear to get software and TreoCentral to find out what worked and what didn't. - r3zonance, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3I bought 2 WM apps in 8-years, they were expensive and ultimately sh!t.
- cubicledrone, on 09/01/2008, -10/+13Microsoft is doing the exact same thing as Google and Apple?
NO *****?!?!?!? - r3zonance, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4Starting with your comment.
- khsheehan, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3no.
- SecureXeC, on 09/01/2008, -1/+4/turns on phone
/loads applications
/gets more applications
/sees "store" for applications
Where's the news? Am I honestly missing something here? There's been a "Store" for Windows Mobile apps since I can remember. - r3zonance, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Hopefully they are going sort out Windows Mobile OS and take all that desktop-like crap UI out of it. Cos it just doesn't work.
- djsim, on 09/01/2008, -0/+3No, "Apple brainless fanboys" would think neither is great.
- estvir, on 09/01/2008, -2/+5I'm guessing you're not aware of the tens of millions of Windows Mobile phones sold..
- Ferre1, on 09/01/2008, -3/+6Windows mobile is already packed with nice apps. Yesterday I discovered it has handwriting recognition and translates my handwriting on the screen into printed letters on-the-fly (no need to use the keyboard to write mail, letters, etc.). It also has copy&paste (you hear that apple-boys?) and I can download anything from anywhere on the web (you hear that apple boys?) including streaming audio and video, it comes with powerpoint, excel, word, outlook, records video (you hear that apple boys?) and a load of other features. I could have gotten one of those over-hyped iphones instead but I'm not a believer.
- jwdav, on 09/01/2008, -2/+5Microsoft doesn't use Intel/RAM/Hard Drives themselves to any large extent as they don't build PC's.
I think the point is that in the consumer space, Microsoft and PC OEM's are chasing Apple's tail as fast as they can. In the enterprise, Microsoft & the commodity PC pretty much stand alone, as other than a low percentage of Mac clients and Linux servers, they really have zero competition.
It will be interesting to see if future competition for the enterprise copies the Microsoft approach, or takes a whole new approach to the business market. - vhold, on 09/01/2008, -0/+3How about a web browser that doesn't hugely suck instead? Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile is simply pathetic next to the iPhone. Your phone may have 3G connectivity, but the browser is sitting there clunking away feebly attempting to render the page. Then once it does, you have to manipulate these small scroll bars on the sides. It's totally inappropriate for a phone.
Opera is somewhat better, but has a giant disadvantage of not being integrated into the OS like Internet Explorer so it takes up a lot of memory. Microsoft should just let people truly close Internet Explorer and remove it from memory. - ParisSeth, on 09/01/2008, -3/+6They should have called it Sky Mall
http://www.9to5mac.com/skymarket-win-mobile-store - iofthestorm, on 09/01/2008, -0/+3What the hell are you talking about? First of all wifi has nothing to do with 3G, and 3G smartphones have been available for quite a while, such as the AT&T 8525. Even most dumbphones have been 3G for a while, two years ago the free phone we got from Verizon was 3G. The iPhone has been behind the technology curve until recently.
- Wolfie351, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3Since when is an online store considered an innovation?
