- CrikeyMike, on 01/09/2009, -5/+123Microsoft should have simply used BitTorrent to deliver the official version -- which will work until August.
- rivasj, on 01/09/2009, -5/+77Pssst...uh, torrent anyone?
- Bartboy919, on 01/10/2009, -9/+67I just installed Windows 7, and my God, I would have never expected it to be as fast as it is.
Here is to you Microsoft, and this is just the Beta!!!! - DomZy, on 01/09/2009, -0/+46It was the registration / profile.microsoft.com servers that got tanked. The downloads weren't too bad (and are still up). Although yeh they should use bit torrent anyways.

I doubt the wait will be long, they've already pissed a ton of people off by not delivering it on time - twiztidsinz, on 01/10/2009, -0/+29Pssst, uh, ACTUAL direct link and not blog:

x64 (64bit): http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/63311 ... - desken, on 01/09/2009, -6/+31C'mon Microsoft, just tap into the Windows Cloud already.
- TheCash, on 01/10/2009, -1/+23This story is outdated. The key servers have been up and down since 4pm EST, and the download servers themselves never went down, you just needed to use the direct links which were posted on numerous sites like Engadget and Gizmodo.
I got my key through the steps LifeHacker laid out in this article: http://lifehacker.com/5128018/windows-7-product-ke ... - SEOtonie, on 01/10/2009, -1/+19Nice, Microsoft build something that people really want.
- Gonasadude, on 01/10/2009, -0/+14The servers didn't crash. They took them offline for a bit in order to add another/more server(s). RTFA
- AzleGamer, on 01/10/2009, -0/+14After constant refreshing, I finally got a key. As for those of you who didnt get a key, there is apparently a "rearm" cmd thing to help extend your usage to 120 days instead of 30.
I followed the instructions here and got everything to work and I'm installing it right now on my computer.
http://blog.hznet.nl/2009/01/10/how-to-receive-a-v ... - ujjwal, on 01/10/2009, -1/+14Actually, most major linux distros use torrents as their preferred release method to avoid this very problem.
- Kazbaeden, on 01/10/2009, -0/+12"Hammering out another OS this fast is going to probably piss off more people than it's going to impress."
I'm guessing by this statement that you're about 15 years old and XP and Vista are the only Microsoft OS releases you can recall. In fact, a 3 year development cycle is pretty standard for MS. Just look at the names of their previous products Windows 95, 98, 2000. Does anything about those dates seem odd to you?
Vista went RTM in F06, W7 will probably go RTM F09. This is just MS back in gear. - Premier, on 01/10/2009, -1/+13"We are literally saying that if we increased our bandwidth any further there's a possibility of taking down the Internet,"
How is that possible? - ericdano, on 01/10/2009, -11/+22Um........Microsoft........delaying something? No........say it ain't true...........
- truthstream, on 01/10/2009, -0/+11Use bit torrent to find activation patches until MS gets its servers back up. Actually, you dont even need an activation patch. Leave the CD Key blank and your copy will be good for 30 days. Then, n the next day or two simply sign in to technet then visit https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ... to get your key
- Table16, on 01/09/2009, -0/+11But that would make sense.
- SitPoMk, on 01/10/2009, -1/+12False, Apple is good at hype
- ArielMT, on 01/09/2009, -2/+11Here. Enjoy. :)
http://digg.com/microsoft/Official_MSDN_Windows_7_ ... - gsnedders, on 01/10/2009, -1/+10As was mentioned above, it wasn't the download servers that went down (they are still up, FWIW) — it was the servers meant to be giving out the product keys. Torrents wouldn't help.

Windows 7 Beta 32-bit Product Key: https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/productke ... - cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -0/+7The reason the links are going so fast is because Microsoft use a CDN (content delivery network) to create localised mirrors of their content. Akamai, their biggest partner (please correct me if I'm wrong) usually has server farms in your locale to ensure you get very fast speeds.
While BitTorrent is probably a better idea, there are too many people who hit and run resulting in far too many leeches than seeds. Additionally, people in the U.S. might experience great speeds, but someone from Australia might experience terrible speeds because there are only a handful of connected Australian seeders. CDNs usually work better in this circumstance. - drakethegreat, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7Bit Torrent wasn't invented by them and they haven't written a client so therefore they think it doesn't exist.
- fuckingusername, on 01/10/2009, -0/+7this worked for me 1 try the top is 4 64 and second is 32
Here's the steps for a key:
1. Visit TechNet Downloads, sign in at the top right and let the page load
2. Within the same window copy and paste "https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ... into the address bar or "https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/g ... (64bit key but will work on 32 too, if you get an error refresh a few times)...enjoy the result below (32 bit link seems to work better), whilst stocks last. If you are still having issues try clearing your temp files and deleting all cookies - ray73864, on 01/10/2009, -1/+8Actually the official version only lasts until August IF you get the product key, without the product key the download will only work for 30days.
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -2/+9It has nothing to do with the server os, it's an issue of capacity/bandwith/scaling
- madk, on 01/10/2009, -0/+6I can't believe I am saying this, but I am actually crazy excited for Windows 7.
- Equinox1, on 01/10/2009, -0/+6Cheers mate.
- michrech, on 01/10/2009, -0/+6I can confirm that the steps above worked as of 10:31 Jan 10, 2009.
- branndon, on 01/10/2009, -0/+5Thank goodness it wasn't me, I felt like the biggest dork in the world not being able to find the download link on their site. I even hit it up 5 or 6 times today. I am running the beta version now from the torrents, I just wanted a legit key so I can try it longer than 30 days.
- jumkua, on 01/10/2009, -1/+6Wait Wait Wait......
- SupaDawg, on 01/10/2009, -1/+6strangely i get redirected back the windows7 page. the lifehacker urls are of no help to moi
- dafin0, on 01/10/2009, -0/+5thanks for the links, i downloaded it a good 6 hours ago and was getting a download speed of 1.2mb (the fastest i can get anyway).
i had a problem with the 64bit version where it didnt pick up my second hard drive. when i went to 32bit i had no such problem. ill file a bug report once i can get a key - lowtolerance, on 01/10/2009, -2/+7Just got my key a couple minutes ago, thanks to a tip on neowin.net from drewh:
"Here is a guide to definitely get a 64-bit key (well almost guaranteed) for those who might be struggling:
1. Use Firefox. Add the "check4change" add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ , search for check4change and then click "Add to Firefox". Restart as required by clicking restart button.)
2. Open TechNet page per link and login using your hotmail/passport account details.
3. Open new tab, and go to https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/sc...w&am ... (64-bit link). The page with "Error... The site is currently experiencing technical....." should appear.
4. Highlight any wording, e.g. "The site is currently", right click and choose Check4Change, then Custom... Set refresh interval between 2-10 seconds (I put 2 seconds), click "Bring to Front" under Notifications, and also click "Allow navigating away from a monitored page" under Problem Solvers". Click Ok.
5. The page will keep refreshing every few seconds until a change is noticed.
6. Repeat steps 3-4 for as many tabs as you want - around 5 seemed to be right. Too many is being selfish and will slow things down anyway, and too few will take longer. Good luck!"
The 64-bit key WILL work on the 32-bit version. - hbeierg, on 01/10/2009, -1/+6and you can get a key here
http://lifehacker.com/5128193/how-to-get-your-wind ...
it works i have gotten mine - twiztidsinz, on 01/10/2009, -0/+5>>They actually want us to use that so that they can get feedbacks from us whether it is running good or to check some bugs that we encounter...
You've OBVIOUSLY missed the point and meaning of -BETA- software.
>>I will just use it if it was already proven to be running better than XP..
It already has been proven. http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2009 ... http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/03/windows-7-build ... http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=3236&page=2 - sammyc53, on 01/10/2009, -2/+7That's 32 bit FYI. Here is 64bit:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/3/3/63311 ... - eatporktoo, on 01/10/2009, -2/+6you really haven't touched windows 7 have you?
if not, STFU - digitalpencil, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4it's just p2p, not a ***** revolution..
- Memnochxx, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4My downloads always disconnect around 350 mb (or sooner) and then don't resume.
- t4m5t3r, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4yeah, im actualy coming to the conclusion that this may infact be vista SP3, and instead of just making vista better they'v simply decided to cash in and call it a new OS, and make more money, TBH your never gonna clean vistas name up now.
It runs fine on my system, but my system is for gaming, the real question is how does it run on a bog standard computer! and i think its probably not gonna be good!
but its certainly is a vast improvement over vista theres no denying that! (although that UAC ***** is still there!!) - t4m5t3r, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4its not that fast im using it just now, if you'v been using vista then yeah its fast, definetly faster than vista, still no where near as fast as XP64!!
But im still trying to get X-fi drivers that work so i can get sound!!
Although credit to MS, IE8 is much, MUCH faster than IE7, feels about as stable as firefox however it is using about 25-50 % of my CPU at all times! (havent installed FF yet) - F4u5t, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4OK, Let me shatter your logic
assuming you numbers are correct Ubuntu has been d/led 2 million times,
there is no telling how many installs ONE cd has made.
Unlike this crap there is no activation and they actually encourage sharing.
Also on the high demand for a BETA, hehehe, I would tend to think it is because they cant stand what they have to use now, and are obviously looking for a solution - Proz, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4The problem isn't the download servers. It's the microsoft.com/windows servers and technet servers that you use to get the key and register. Microsoft.com/windows was down most of yesterday. Let me repeat: microsoft.com/WINDOWS, Microsofts main Windows site was down (That's incredible).
They are adding more servers to handle that load. The download servers are working just fine. Scroll up and find the download links here in the comments. - webborocks, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4I just followed the link got mine first try, cheers man
- inactive, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4How can you be so presumptions when it's just the beta?
- Mooinakan, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4it's up again
- cquinnd, on 01/10/2009, -0/+4Leaking the ISOs doesn't help with the demand for keys.
