- latova, on 01/08/2009, -11/+52Well that's the Microsoft way. Don't make a better product to compete, instead have your product enabled by default and hope that your users are too lazy or too stupid to change to anything better.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -4/+39So it's okay for Google Desktop to be bundled on all the dells then? It's only evil when MS does it?
- SebHughes, on 01/08/2009, -1/+34More crap to uninstall.
- NathanCH, on 01/08/2009, -1/+22Live Search has some neat features, but I don't look for neat features in a Search Engine, I look for results.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+17How is this any different from Google paying Mozilla to be the default search engine in Firefox.
- divinediva, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13If Microsoft wants this to work, they have to strike very fast and very hard.
- greenanator, on 01/08/2009, -5/+17I loathe Live Search.
- alex7575, on 01/08/2009, -3/+14MS should just stick to what they do best. Find a market, and monopolize the ***** out of it...
- Renton, on 01/09/2009, -0/+11Microsoft has an interesting way of fudging their numbers. They have something called "Live Search Club" where users play games to earn tickets to exchange for real life prizes. Most of the games are some kind of word games, and whenever you complete a word, a little search box at the bottom searches for that word. Most of any prizes worthwhile require an exorbitant amount of tickets, so the site is filled with botters. Each botter gives Live Search over 1000 searches per day.
Here's the Live Search Club

And here is the Live Search botting forum

Microsoft knows about these guys, but doesn't do anything about them because they're actually doing Microsoft a big favor. - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -2/+11Bundled software worked so well for AOL and Realplayer.
/sarcasm - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -4/+11who gives a *****
- latova, on 01/09/2009, -1/+6I didn't say it was okay for google to do it either. It's a strategy that Microsoft started though.
- lovemorgul, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6it's an important way to get these.....
- TurdZilla, on 01/08/2009, -5/+10Its the American way. Buy your way to the top even if your product sucks ass. I love it
/sarcasm - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -3/+8Well if Google is allowed to pay Mozilla to be the default in Firefox, then so can MS.
- schtick01101, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4"But a source close to the company said the five-year arrangement is worth a minimum of $650 million with Microsoft paying Verizon on a per handset basis."
I don't know but that seems like a pretty good benefit. - DjOverEZ, on 01/09/2009, -1/+5Not to mention Apple trying to get me to install Safari with every iTunes update. It's all about getting your product onto as many computers as possible, by any means necessary. All suppliers do it in one way or another.
- mrBitch, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4@ RetardsGalore RE: "Live search works too just the results aren't at as good."
So what you are saying is : "Live search does NOT work as well as Google". - falafelkiosken, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4you better read what you responded to again
- LeeMaple, on 01/08/2009, -1/+4Agreed, and it would be acceptable if only Live Search could find it's own ass with two hands and a map.
- mrBitch, on 01/09/2009, -2/+5@ CrazyZ RE: "It's only evil when MS does it?"
All *****-ware and trial-ware on a default OS install is unwanted. - rmxz, on 01/09/2009, -2/+5If you buy a Dell, you're not the Customer (as in the "customer's always right" sense).
You are the product Dell sells to the adware vendors in exactly the same way a broadcast-TV audience is the product they sell their advertisers. - LoveWidescreen, on 01/08/2009, -5/+8...all of which will be promptly removed either manually or with that PC Decrapifier. It's bad enough that Microsoft thinks that they need to know when I'm searching my own hard drive, but to then get money from it via Dell and HP?? NO ***** WAY!!
- jsp123, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Because we would switch to it anyway? So Mozilla is getting free money.
- mrBitch, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Good point. It's now actually at a point where a default OS install can take hours to clean up and configure just to get rid of the trial-ware and *****-ware that is part of the default OS install.
- awesometastic1, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2@latova: Businesses have been doing this forever, you can even see evidence of this type of strategy in Ancient Roman business practices. Microsoft didn't start it.
- mrBitch, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3@rmxz RE: "If you buy a Dell, you're not the Customer...

So true. - Psych77, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Office 2007 is fantastic once you get used to the complete UI change.
Live Search can produce better results than Google for web searches sometimes, although I agree that sometimes it's complete crap. MS desktop search is great though. - Jambi, on 01/09/2009, -2/+4Yes, it has Google as a default search option. It doesn't have Google Toolbar installed. If it did, that would be bloat. If you read the information describing the article, you'd see that the Live Search Toolbar will be installed by default. That's what people don't like.
- 6minuteabs, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2And Google buying AOL's search traffic... The list is endless.
- mrBitch, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2If it's installed as a default on a default OS install, then it's no different.
Are there any default OS installs with FireFox ?
It's also important to send a message to Dell and others that ALL *****-ware and trial-ware on a default OS install is unwanted. - 6minuteabs, on 01/08/2009, -5/+6Because you aren't smart enough to disable a toolbar if you don't like it?
- stutimandal, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Would be good if you try Live Search or Live Photos and tell me what is so lazy or bad about it.
Stop ranting. This isn't MSN.com of 2001. Live has some actual features now. - sparksalot, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Actually, the Dell "reset" disk only reinstalls the OS these days and nothing else. Without the driver disk my laptop wasn't even aware it had an ethernet port. It really has no crap.
- vinnyvenus, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2The first thing I do after buying a computer is remove all the crap it comes with.
http://digg.com/software/Introducing_the_Dell_De-C ... - kufurex, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Yes! Hadn't you heard? Pfff.
No monopoly is good, but MS products are becoming unnecessary for the general public, and even power-users. Microsoft is trying to play catch-up, and if they produce better products or services than Google or Yahoo!, then great, but if history is any indication MS products will be 'ok' at best. - awesometastic1, on 01/09/2009, -0/+190% of users out there ARE too lazy and stupid to change to anything better, or to even be able to tell that something else is better. (i know, i build websites for people and fix their computers as a business and most people don't even know how to navigate to websites without either using a search engine or clicking links).
Microsoft knows this and they use it to their advantage. It's just smart business. Apple does the same thing. iPod's for instance are far from the best MP3 players out there both in quality and usability (considering the ipod itself and iTunes).
Apple lives on being "cool" microsoft lives on being "default". Two ways of accomplishing the same thing that have nothing to do with being a better product. - drcreek, on 01/09/2009, -3/+4Difference is. Google works.
- eastcoast1978, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3To bad. Verizon will not benefit from this in any way.
- Simkin, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3Anyone who knows anything will just go to www.getfirefox.com as their first website and be rid of this crap anyhow.
- MattBD, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1@DulcetTone Fair point but as far as I can see a lot of that's more to do with the architecture of OS X - the way applications are packaged means they're very self contained, whereas Windows installs stuff all over the place so when you uninstall something you'll still have configuration files and other bits left behind.
But yes, you don't really get persistent adware in the same way, and the only free 30-day trial on offer is for Mobile Me. However, iTunes on Windows is a whole other matter, but let's not go there... - DulcetTone, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1The good news is you select these and hit DELETE and they really do go away. You might have to tell Software Update not to offer you their updates, however.
Apple plays fair in many ways Microsoft has chosen not to. - kufurex, on 01/11/2009, -0/+1I may be retarded but a lot of people are using online hosted services for everyday wordprocessing, spreadsheets, and email.
Notice I never said business, since there is a long way we have to go until cloud services will become powerful enough for business functions.
And the planet is Earth.
I think I answered all of your questions. - mbfielding, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1just did the same thing on my new toshiba
- MattBD, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Hate to be cynical, but most of the stuff on my MacBook is just crapware to me. I don't use iWeb, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD or Garageband at all. iWeb in particular just seems to be a way to sell the Mobile Me service. Half these things aren't really any better than most of the equivalents available in the Ubuntu repositories, and now Picasa is available for the Mac a few people may see why iPhoto isn't that great.
Crapware is different things to different people. Some people may call MS Works crapware, but it's not a bad basic office suite for home users. Unfortunately, not everyone knows about OpenOffice. And I got a copy of Cyberlink Power2Go with my Philips laptop which has served me pretty well.
PS For any Mac fanboys who may wish to say that I'm trolling here(which I'm not), I said "to me". I'm sure other people do get plenty of use out of iLife, but I don't, so it wasn't really worth me having it. Just trying to show a little perspective here. - cbeach, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1One of the things I love about Macs is they don't come pre-loaded with crapola like this.
- representDLV, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1MS products are becoming unnecessary for the general public and power users? Are you retarded? What planet do you live on?
- representDLV, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2why?
- simpleboy, on 01/09/2009, -3/+4Who cares? After getting a new laptop bundled with crappy vista and much crappier IE, my first steps are to download Firefox check some emails, reboot, plugin Ubuntu CD, install it and never look back to Vista again. I hate all these so called OEM OSes. Why do they ***** up with my laptop always? ***** u dell, ***** u hp, and ***** everyone else who loads all the ***** on my new laptop!
- mrBitch, on 01/09/2009, -2/+3If you had bought a Dell recently, you would realise that it's NOT just as simple as disabling an unwanted toolbar.
As Renton posted a few posts up :
" I don't even bother. If I get a new computer, the first thing I do is find a pirated version of the OS on Thepiratebay and do a fresh install. " -
