- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+71There is a simple reason that Bill Gates is the biggest philanthropist in history. He actually has a heart.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Agreed. Bill Gates gives a bigger *percentage* of his money than anyone else I know. Not just amount, but %. Before you talk ***** about his philanthropy, put your money where your mouth is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+65Take THAT Apple! Woohoo! :D
- actorboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44As an Mac user living in New Orleans, thank you Microsoft and thank you Bill Gates. You have done and continue to do some truly benevolent things. It does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40I bet you haven't given .0000001% percent of your money to a charity.
- prammy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28@Symph0ny:
What exactly should Microsoft do? If they donate, its not enough. If Bill Gates flies to Louisiana and does manual labor, its not enough. Everyone loves to harp on how evil of a company Microsoft is, but for all their faults, BillG and company do donate quite a bit to worthwhile causes.
I don't remember where I read it, but it was said that Bill Gates plans to donate most of the money he has made to charity by the time he dies.
I bet that even if he donates 100% of all the money he has made people will still find some fault with it. Usually by the type of people who have never donated. - nunbot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28say what you will about profits but the fact is they gave quite a bit
- Y0tsuya, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29Nah, it's easier for people to just to hate Bill Gates. Less thinking required.
- tjex, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Is it me or the stories go like this:
Pro MS
Against MS
Pro MS
Against MS
......
Can't we bring back the million iPhone articles instead? - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18please tell me you don't have to go back that far to find examples of apple giving to charity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20It's not just you. I noticed the same thing. I think the Macult is foaming at the mouth over the new MS section.
- dtd00d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20As much as people may love Apple, Microsoft really wins in the PR aspect of business. I don't see Apple pulling similar moves.
It's good to know that some part of our OS costs go to help people in need. - bamassippi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17From all us Mississippians.. thank you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18And it still costs them money...*****.
Amazing how Apple doesn't seem to want to make that free money that comes from "tax write offs"
Here is a little lesson little boy...when you give $1 million away, and you are in a 40% tax bracket, that doantion costs you $600,000 that would otehrwise be PROFIT. - duniyadnd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Fortunately I've had first hand experience to see what it's like working in a non-profit and that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation does not donate money blindly without doing some extensive (translate to time consuming) research first before giving money blindly to a random non-profit/charity organization. I'm assuming that Microsoft follows the same policy.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20You are utterly foolish.
- adriantr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Wow, thats a lot of money. I bet Apple couldnt afford to donate a penny more than that!
- stephbu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hate to say this but the Microsoft profits isn't "their money" - its sharesholder money - as with *every* other market traded corporation in the civilized world. The MS Giving campaign is more than just a corporate community scheme too.
Microsoft Employees gave around $20m of their income, $100m of software, and 100's of hours of employed time last year - that can't be sniffed at. That Microsoft Corporation then matched that contribution makes this a knock out. - geekee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"If anything, this is just a tax write off. "
That is a pretty ignorant statement. Wow, what a strategy for saving money!!! I can avoid paying taxes on money I give away!! If I donate the max of 1/3 of my income, I won't have to pay taxes on 1/3 of my money!!! - jon314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Good for them. Keep it up.
- Sakk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I love how 1.7 million dollars gets donated, part of a much larger sum donated over time and the most positive thing said about it is "a little late"
Get over your hatred.
Way to go Microsoft, I'm sure it's appreciated in the end. - adriantr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Looks like the fanboys came unstuck on this one!
- i64X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You're an *****.
- Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Oops, wrong company. We aren't talking about the one where you have to buy their product to help people."
Well if you're letting Microsoft pay instead of you, then *you're* not helping, are you?
And for what it's worth - good on Microsoft for donating. - HolisticIsland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Kramer: "It's a write off for them."
Jerry: "How is it a write off?"
Kramer: "They just write it off."
Jerry: "Write it off what?"
Kramer: "Jerry, all these big companies, they write off everything."
Jerry: "You don't even know what a write off is."
Kramer: "Do you?"
Jerry: "No, I don't!"
Kramer: "Well, they do. And they're the ones writing it off."
Jerry: "I wish I could have the last twenty seconds of my life back." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10OK...let's hear all the pathetic haters' ignorant comments like "Donating money MAKES companies profit." Thereby proving that most Diggers get all their knowledge from watching sit coms and bad dramas.
- pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10i don't think the parent is getting dugg down for saying new orleans still needs help, he's getting dugg down for saying "a little late". bordering on looking a gift horse in the mouth.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ hydrokool:
2007 - Apple overcharges for iphone. - Greyarea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Two wrongs don't make a right."
No, but three rights make a left.
I'll get my coat. - batv0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As a New Orleanian, its good to see this money come into the community. But as fortunate as the community is to receive it, we are still going to deal with Louisiana politics and it'll get wasted, diverted, or stolen.
But thanks Microsoft. - sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Riiight, because Katrina ONLY destroyed homes. It didn't destroy any roads, power lines, infrastructure, water pipes, dykes, vehicles, etc...
And EVERYONE who lost their homes has enough disposable income to immediately pay to rebuild their homes. Especially those who lived in the slums.
/sarcasm - jackspack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9MS - $1.7 million donated to Katrina Fund
Open Source - $0 donated to Katrina Fund - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5mookie,
This isn't about what got donated where, this is about Bill Gates taking some of his money (the amount is immaterial) and giving it to help people. While I have little use for MS Operating Systems, I applaud Bill Gates and his foundation for all the good work they have done and will do in the future. Thank you Bill. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Im glad this catagory has been added, now Mac users can go on the offensive and be the Flag564 of the micrsoft catagory
- Dundasbro, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9And wheres the wii news??? I havn't seen too many wii positive articles lately, lets bring them back!
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Considering the typical tone of your posts, I don't even want to know where YOUR knowledge comes from.
Back on topic: Thank you Bill for giving back. The people of the Gulf Coast needed your help and you came through admirably. Before Gates haters start crying about the amount, how much did YOU give? - Trixrox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They say money isn't everything, but it sure as hell is a lot of things. I'm glad to see Microsoft contribute.
- fareed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bill Gates cares about black people!
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6well we've got the macult and their section so it's only fair
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Apple would rather keep their money to themselves than help people.
- viviwanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's just money down the drain, literally. History has shown us that it's generally not a good idea to build a city on a swamp below sea level.
- hydrokool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nic Cage donated $1 Million. He's not a multi billion dollar corporation. I personally like his acting more than Ballmer's too.
- TaeTrent, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Learn to use the correct word(their) and then proceed to make fun of people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Personally I liked the sony bashing articles a lot better.
So here's a anti-sony comment: BMG. - wwestbrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"You know I love the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation but I still have to wonder, why only $55 million?" Primarily because Katrina release is hardly the only he (and his wife) is pumping money into. The amount of money the have given to fight AIDS in India being a good example. I cant remember the exact figure but it is staggering.
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Houston wasn't exactly a utopia before the evacuees arrived, and the impact of New Orleanians on crime there has been vastly overstated!
http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA021807.01B.juvenile_evacuees.11be927.html
I'm digging you down because what you said isn't true, but you're from TX so I guess you're accustomed to being wrong. - waterdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You don't have to put Vista on your computer. You can stick with XP, you can use Linux, or you can buy a Mac. Or hell, you can format and install Windows 95.
- ricksite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wonder what Milton Friedman would have to say about this.
http://www.colorado.edu/studentgroups/libertarians/issues/friedman-soc-resp-business.html - number5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4looks like most thay are ignoring the Mississippi gulf coast, even tho we took the most damage
- Burmask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Y0tsuya - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
