- SemDD, on 10/10/2007, -7/+47This is pretty much travesty: the project has been running unattended for nearly 4 years now, and lo and behold! MS puts its finger on it!
The guys from the Autopatcher team claim that they have talked to some MS guys previous years and Redmond didn't mind their program.
suddenly, they are given the boot with the usual denial from MS:
-"no, it is NOT about the circumvention of WGA"
-"yes, you can now use the official WindowsUpdate with another browser, namely Firefox"
-"yes, we asked the autopatcher team to take down their downloads page, even if it is only a list of mirrors"
-"insert next MS BS here..."
of course, thanks god, the torrent strikes back! :-)
http://autopatcher.m2ys4u.co.uk/mystats.php - hardcorerikki, on 10/10/2007, -9/+47Good luck downloading 140 updates for every PC you own, every time you reinstall XP.
Seriously, time to ditch MS's Windows !! They took the site/downloads down ? Well, hear that: bittorrent SURVIVED !! - kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36from a fully autopatched system i type " ***** you microsoft "
- M2Ys4U, on 10/10/2007, -5/+33I've received two take-down notices for the torrent tracker already.
Of course, the tracker will remain up until the server is unplugged :P - d00msay3r3, on 10/10/2007, -9/+36Just another PUSH from Microsoft to get you to invest in Vista's piss poor sales......guess it's seriously time to try me some Ubuntu.
- Crisao23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27A great loss for those on poor connections
- Dannyarr, on 10/10/2007, -5/+31Yay, another part of maintaining my home network made harder. Thanks MS..
- felyduw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25the point isn't there are updates but that there are 140 updates and about 5 reboots minimum involved.
- Sakumi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+28I'm a network administrator for about 30 or so corporate networks. Lets just say this will make my job a lot harder on patching fresh installs, etc.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -3/+26***** thats how I get my updates for Windows XP Pro "Corporate Edition" (Volume license) which had become non-Genuine after everyone in the world started using it.
- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Thats a shame.
My computer had this problem where it couldn't download via Autoupdates, so I had to use the Autopatcher to get it working again.
I just hope that issue does not reoccur. - M2Ys4U, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Oh, and please consider sending a /polite/ comment to MS asking that the project live on: https://support.microsoft.com/common/survey.aspx?scid=sw;en-gb;1348&showpage=1&WS=mscomukform1
- MrBester, on 10/10/2007, -6/+25"no, it is NOT about the circumvention of WGA"
WGA is included. Of course, it is your choice (like in WU) not to install it...
"yes, you can now use the official WindowsUpdate with another browser, namely Firefox"
no you can't. You have to run an ActiveX control and last time I looked Firefox didn't run those. So the M$ guy is either a retard or a liar. - CalipsoII, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21FCKGW?
- Buckbeak, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18More proof that Microsoft just doesn't get it and is out of touch with its users.
- netburnr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16My e-mail
"Do to the nature of Windows and the fact that I must reinstall almost yearly, I have found AutoPatcher to be a godsend. Instead of having to install hundreds of updates a few at a time, with reboots in between, I can get my system up and running in a matter of minutes with one reboot.
Your attack on them and forcing them to take down one of the greatest Windows utilities on the internet has further pushed me from your operating system. I will no longer purchase any Microsoft products and I will be selling my almost brand new xBox 360. I hope you guys are happy with yourselves." - MioTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19If you were a GOOD network administrator, you'd have WSUS set up, and this wouldn't be an issue.
- OrangeCrush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Unfortunately, that's not practical when fixing a friend's computer and having to use their system's restore disc/partition. I'd much rather be able to take any fresh install, pop in the disc I burned w/ autopatcher and let it do its thing BEFORE connecting anything to the Internet.
- ezekiel683, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15***** you microsoft. you have some great devs but collectively otherwise your a bunch of *****
just my 0.02 :) - theundone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14As a repair tech, I can't tell you how many times I've updated systems with AutoPatcher. I seriously cannot have 3 or 4 computers trying to download all that crap at the same time. What a freaking waste of bandwidth!
- OrangeCrush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I sent a polite message and asked that even if there were difficult legal issues, at the very least provide more frequent update roll-ups (don't have to be full service packs, just give me a single downloadable executable that will bring a fresh SP2 current!). Quarterly would be nice, but I'd be happy with semi-annual releases.
- PlayWithFire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Wow, i just download the August Core version yesterday. Looks like I'll be holding on to that file. Ubuntu is looking more and more attractive every day.
- BigTuna, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12May as well start posting some current mirrors as well before they go down...

http://www.uzzisoft.com/mirrors/autopatcher/ - Genma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12wga is precisely the reason they want to take down autopatcher. and it's just perfect that they decide to do this right after it faiils. the only malicious code that was ever involved here is coming from ms.
- liquilife, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Wouldn't a program like AutoPatcher be a great addition to the Microsoft family of windows utilities? I mean really, instead if killing the greatest windows project ever, how about you support it in a more official capacity and monitor the quality of the program? It is obviously a must have tool for nearly all sys administrators out there which means there is a need. Microsoft Windows just seems so out of tune with it's windows community, it's not even funny. Maybe they need to take some lessons from the Xbox department.
- temporalwar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I work for a small PC Store/Repair place, and Autopatcher is a very nice tool to have, saves bandwith, time and customers money, if M$ would have released SP3 last year, it would be on CD as a OEM product and patching would be very small thing to deal with.
nlite'ed OEM disks are also a great thing, they better not take that away! - 511pf, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12If he's administering 30 networks, they're probably small businesses that don't have the cash to buy servers to run everything PLUS WSUS. If it's a 5-10 PC network, autopatcher is going to be faster anyway. It sounds like he's supporting 30 different businesses, which means 30 copies of WSUS, not one. If you were less of dick, I wouldn't have had to explain all this.
- waterdrop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Actually it's C2QMM. FCKGW was found out way before this one.
- s1mph0ny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot over what they perceive to be a threat. They probably aren't concerned so much with WGA circumvention, as they are with not having control of the updates. Neowin could be altering them, which would be bad for Microsoft.
If I was running the division at Microsoft, I'd recommend the buyout of neowin. This keeps current users happy, and allows potential users a higher probability of having a good experience with your software. - EXreaction, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Or just try making a semi-updated boot disk with all the patches on you need...with nLite
- decades, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Honestly, what the ***** will Microsoft do next? How much more will Windows users take before they realise Microsoft never cease to take the reins of their unholy monopoly? This has to be some sort of knock-on from the WGA saga...
Regardless of which O/S you use and support, nobody deserves this sort of treatment. - ChicagoFan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11http://www.ap.500words.ca/category/windows-xp
- psykiv, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Thanks for making my life that much harder, m$.
Whenever I have to reinstall/repair windows for a client, I always use autopatcher to patch and update it as much as possible, then just download the 2 or 3 patches left on windows update seperately. Now I need to download 100+ updates from the *SLOW* microsoft website. Now instead of spending an hour or an hour and a half tops updating a fresh install of SP2, you want me to basically leave the computer on overnight on the windows update website. You fail
At least I still have it on my flash drive.
Time to fire up nlite and start slipstreaming. Or at least release windows xp SP3 with all these patches already built in already. - Coded1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Why doesn't Microsoft come up with an idea to facilitate the idea? Do they really love the idea of people hitting their Windows Update site with SP1 installed? Why not just take a look at the system and just prepatch the files instead of sending you an updated file just to update the same file again and again until it is fully patched? MS should provide as a service the ability to patch your XP install CD. This way evrey once in a while MS sends you an autoupdate notice saying your CD is out of date would you like to make a new one?
- 511pf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's portable. You can take it to Aunt Millie's house to update her PC. You can also use it to setup a new PC for her.
If you run a PC repair shop, you don't have to spend hours and huge amounts of bandwidth re-downloading the same updates over and over for fixing/setting up PCs.
Small business consultants can setup and patch machines faster when supporting networks too small (5-10 users) to have a WSUS server.
If you're a corporate technician and your business doesn't have its WSUS/SMS/Radia act together, you can patch a machine quickly and easily instead of waiting forever for downloads to complete. - marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Ubuntu is on a 6 month release schedule. Even if you were not to update your copy (which wouldnt cripple your system anyway since most of the Ubuntu updates are not to fix major flaws in the system), you'd be up to date on the next release.
Oh, and I was able to update frmo Edgy to Feisty without having to reinstall anything. Can MS do that to get my XP box to Vista? - TheJenks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I seriously think Microsoft are stuck in the past. Ive used autopatcher a few times in the past few years, its been handy and always a fast method of updating. Microsoft have the most annoying and stupid update service, it takes so long while it verifies me, downloads the latest update software so it can verify me again, bring up a security box, freeze, say there is a problem connecting and then leave me with a blank page. Microsoft shouldn't be closing these guys down, they should be giving them a damn medal for making their OS usable by people who really expect so much more from it than the company which still seems stuck in the 80's provides.
I know their are people out there with non legit copies of windows but for gods sake, dont make us honest users jump through hoops every pain stking time we want to make sure we are protected with the latest updates. - BrandonB1218, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Do? Don't you mean "Due"? =|
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Microsoft replies:
"We don't care." - Beylan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The absolute BEST thing about Autopatcher was that it was completely automated. Could set it up and click "go" then go away and do other stuff for 2 hours, come back and it was done. It even did the final reboot for me.
On WU not only do you waste all that time redownloading all the patches every time, but you have to click "Next>" and accept EULAs and constantly interact with the update process so that 2 hours of time doing other stuff while it was patching has become 6-8hrs (minimum) of dedicated time sitting there at the machine so you can manually reboot the 5 or 6 times it needs it and accepting a dozen or more EULA's.
What a *****. - infoshowzen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Microsoft - Loosing our customers one lawsuit at a time.
- Genma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5get the august core and keep it somewhere safe while you still can and help seed, who knows how long the trackers will be up for.
- irieKEN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You meant that as a general statement, right?:)
August Core should be good enough until SP3 gets released. - Izzio, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Actually that app only lets you download "genuine Microsoft software" files from the Microsoft downloads page. The actual Windows Update site is still IE only.
- icsbase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Btw as a side note, what do i get for having Windows Genuine Advantage on my XP? What are the advantages that it brings which i didn't already had? NONE. M$ ***** department is at it again.
- jamesfaction, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4what the hey? I was with you on the "most users are appliance operators" and the "people buy a computer with Windows preinstalled" but then you started off on a tangent about buying an OS seperate from a computer.
There are several great Linux operating systems, notably PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu, which are actually considerably easier to install than Windows ever was. Put the CD in and reboot, done - you've already got the OS running off the CD and can use it from there. Installing it is really as simple as double-clicking the "install" icon on the desktop.
Your point about people just taking whatever comes with the computer is one worth making though. - Genma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5no there is a seperate app you can use to validate your wga outside the browser, but either way you are going through wga so yes they are a bunch of liars.
- jamesfaction, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Microsoft is doing this all wrong. Instead of issuing them with a cease and desist notice, they should be HIRING the Autopatcher team!
- linkdj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4If you're looking to download from a mirror that's still up, I suggest the CacheFly-supported http://www.getAutoPatcher.com (from which I'm getting the August Core right now)
- ScottDaMan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Listen up retard. Some of us don't follow groupies and keeping going to the next "best thing." I'm happy with Windows XP and I am not switching to anything else for several years. I like my Photoshop, DreamWeaver, EverNote, and other software that I don't wish to relearn "the unix way"
