- stage88, on 05/30/2008, -1/+190I'm incredibly anal about others touching my displays with their greasy, disgusting, bacteria-addled fingers. My monitors are for viewing not touching.
- krystalo, on 05/29/2008, -4/+128He never said it would replace the mouse. He said it could be used as an additional input device.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -1/+111The mouse ain't gona die anytime soon.
- MattBlackCat, on 05/29/2008, -4/+112(fastforward to the future)
(L)User - Hello Tech support I am having problems resizing jpegs.
BOFH - Have you tried cleaning the gunk out from under your nails - oboredone, on 05/29/2008, -11/+100I don't think I trust Microsoft's abilities enough to go without a mouse anytime in the near future.
- Comanche, on 05/30/2008, -3/+64PC Gaming....
- michaelphw, on 05/30/2008, -1/+62I can't see myself Photoshopping with my fingers. I need precise movements.
- JigoroKano, on 05/30/2008, -1/+61I scream at people when they even put their fingers close to my screen.
- kds71, on 05/30/2008, -4/+60Yeah, and nobody will ever need more than 640 kB RAM.
- pxa270, on 05/30/2008, -1/+47Bill Gates is wrong about a lot of things. In 2001 he predicted that TabletPCs would be the most popular form factor in 5 years.
- Hrag, on 05/30/2008, -2/+45But... I like my mouse?
- corryface, on 05/30/2008, -4/+35the iphone only works that way because its hand held, a full size computer screen would be a pain in the ass to type on
- 9bpm9, on 05/30/2008, -3/+32Uhhh, anyone else not want finger prints on their few hundred dollar monitors?
- LargeTrout, on 05/30/2008, -7/+34Great, so I'll be punching my monitor soon too because of Windows. Can't wait. It really will be the Blue Screen of Death.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -5/+29I'm incredibly anal about others touching my mouse with their greasy, disgusting, bacteria-addled fingers.
- Frost9999, on 05/30/2008, -2/+26I am amazed that Bill Gates thinks this is even worth talking about. 7 years ago I had a Fujitsu laptop with a touch-screen. It worked just fine even though it wasn't 'multi-touch'. The technology has been around for long enough that if people really could benefit from touch screens, they would be ubiquitous by now.
- reflex768, on 05/30/2008, -2/+26TSDs are one of those things the industry has been trying to talk users into for years, but only a slim segment of consumers seems to actually like to use. Reminds me of how Hollywood often tries to promote certain unpopular actors and actresses in film after film, trying to force the market to embrace and adopt them. With both scenarios I always find myself wondering why.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -2/+24If something comes along to replace the computer mouse interface, Microsoft will not be the company to introduce it.
(they might steal it, later, however) - Calypsoaf, on 05/30/2008, -0/+21What about those who don't like to sit within arms reach of their screen?
- buka039, on 05/30/2008, -5/+25>>Some experts have questioned how practical a mouse-less computer would be
I wonder why ..
MS is really heading the wrong way. Instead of delivering fast, reliable and secure OS, they do this childish, useless wow features. - banmaster, on 05/30/2008, -9/+27Have you seen the demos of MS Surface?
Sure, its a 'bigass table' but its is of MUCH greater interest to me than any iPhone thing. - Ryan0617, on 05/30/2008, -0/+18*Punches screen*
- srg13, on 05/30/2008, -0/+17Put your hands up to your monitor, and pretend that you are working for more than a minute. Tired yet?
That is why this will never happen. It would require the screen to be where the keyboard is, which would cause bad posture problems because you'd have to bend over it. And that's just as bad. - inactive, on 05/30/2008, -1/+18There's a reason why touch screens died in the 90's....It's just not a good technology for input. Sure, it's great for the ATM or simple things, but imagine having to look through your hand as you work.
- Meekers, on 05/30/2008, -2/+16This is just a terrible article. I am willing to bet Gates never said the touch screen is replacing the mouse. It is being added as a second option, mainly as a feature for tablets where you do not have a mouse to work with most of the time. It is obviously not something that they intend to replace the mouse but I guess that would not of made as good an article.
On top of that the description was obviously written by a mac fanboy because Microsoft is not copying the technology from apple. They have been working on the Surface long before the iphone. Neither Microsoft nor Apple is the original inventor of the technology. - PaulOwen, on 05/30/2008, -2/+16In the Microsoft World of the Future, you might even have games consoles like the XBox with movement-sensitive LEDs which you can play sports on, and lose weight with. It could be called the Microsoft "Wireless Information Interactive" console or something - they'd think of a natty abbreviation later.
Now look at that picture of Bill once more, and just imagine the possibilities! - spammishking, on 05/30/2008, -0/+14could you imagine what kind of workout you would get with a 23+ inch screen. PC gamers would have huge arms
- coollettuce, on 05/30/2008, -6/+18I'm sick of people assuming that windows gets tons of BSODs. If you get a BSOD 9.5/10 it's a hardware issue not a windows one.
- Morghin, on 05/30/2008, -2/+13Just give me an overall better experience instead of the clunky bloated DRM-fest, and I'll be fairly content, touch is of little concern for me now, and will be for some time to come.
- DiggityDugged, on 05/30/2008, -4/+14looks like it's finally time to get that carpal tunnel health insurance
- Hangly, on 05/30/2008, -1/+11Thanks, I'll keep my mouse. That way I can keep my hands out of the way of what I'm working on.
- roodammy44, on 05/30/2008, -1/+11I advise investing in monitor screen wipe companies
- tama00, on 05/30/2008, -1/+10You can take from me my DRM free media,
but you never take from me my mouse!
*kisses mouse* - ironrex, on 05/30/2008, -0/+9I just don't see FPS surviving on the computer without the mouse and keyboard. Furthermore, imagine using word or powerpoint with a touch screen, it would just be more of a pain the move your entire arm around rather than using a mouse. This just seems like nonsense to me.
- synyster, on 05/30/2008, -1/+9wtf, there is something called iphone
- norbiu, on 05/30/2008, -2/+10So I'm not alone. Thank you! I ***** hate it that I have to use windex and ***** like that to clean my kb and mouse beause the ***** that comes over doesn't wash his hands after he takes a piss.
- AndrewDB, on 05/30/2008, -8/+16I think this is kind of cool...
It sounds like the beginning of the LCARS in Star Trek. - banmaster, on 05/30/2008, -4/+12It probably got dugg down because triton seems to think that ONLY microsoft copies others' ideas. Apple do it, linux do it, MS does it, get the hell over it.
Remember, Apple stole the GUI from Sun, MS stole it from apple, linux stole it from everyone.
Its easy to 'inovate' and experiment when you don't have to keep 90%+ of the market happy and operating okay. Apple is in this position, MS isn't. The best thing MS could do is a complete OS reset and break everything like apple did with OSX (after they realized they couldn't code a good kernel for ***** and licensed the BSD one), but MS simply can't do that due to the market share thing and how the shareholders would revolt, even though they really need create a new OS and GUI from the ground up rather than just evolving a 15 years old system more every couple of years. - ultrafez, on 05/30/2008, -1/+9That should be enough for anybody.
- darthjure, on 05/30/2008, -2/+10Of course, Linux and OsX have never copied anything from Window...have they? In so many ways, Linux is trying to catch up with and be like Windows.
- kublerross, on 05/30/2008, -3/+10yes, because poor hygeine is manly and admirable
- diablozx9, on 05/30/2008, -1/+8Just like they did with the mouse.
- h4mx0r, on 05/30/2008, -5/+12Playin' some deathmatch on a touch screen!
- Ryan0617, on 05/30/2008, -1/+7It would be a nice input device. But i would seriously wish they would work on why windows/IE keep crashing before dedicating time on this project.
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -1/+7I'm incredibly anal about others touching my hand with their greasy, disgusting, bacteria-addled fingers.
- mrbeagle, on 05/30/2008, -1/+7Your arms would get tired in a hurry, too.
- xexx, on 05/30/2008, -1/+7I seem to remember him predicting the death of the keyboard not too long ago as well, something about within 5 years.. will never happen. I don't want to talk to my computer constantly, and I don't want to lean up to touch my monitor either, which I can't even do without moving my body forward anyway. Voice technology and touch screens will continue to be very useful features for some people, however.
The only time either of these will really die is when we can effectively control the computer with our brainwaves. - r3zonance, on 05/30/2008, -3/+9Bill didn't actually say that, but never mind.
- synyster, on 05/30/2008, -0/+6and make billions from it, bastards
- inactive, on 05/30/2008, -1/+7"Windows 7 aims to build on the success of the touch screen systems developed by Microsoft's rival Apple's iPhone."
Is it just me or didnt MS have tablets LONG BEFORE THE IPHONE? The OS supported tablets LONG BEFORE THE IPHONE and still supports tablets today.
More mactard brainwashing - I wish someone would loan them a brain please!
And as touch screens become cheaper, this is not the end of the mouse but the option to end it. the only thing I'm concerned about is that I'm used to having the option to right click on something. How is the screen going to know? -
