Google Maps hates Windows
google.com — One of the features of Google Maps is that it pulls in images from websites. Take a look at the image for Microsoft....
- 2142 diggs
- digg it
- Anrkist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+113I'm not exactly sure how it works.. but it appears to be pulling in "Related Photos". Possible google style bomb for the maps.. nothing to do with google other then their ability to be manipulated from time to time =]
- jhaydon, on 10/12/2007, -30/+11It's actually very clever!
- audiowizard, on 10/12/2007, -72/+29Microsoft haters are so 90s. Get off it already. We know we know, OS X, and Ubuntu rule. No sh!t kids.
- vhdblood9999, on 10/12/2007, -19/+5Does anyone know how they get the images? I'm just wondering because if you search for Windows, Microsoft, and Microsoft Corp on Google Images, you don't get that image, so how would you bomb this?
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55If you look at H which is the main campus, it shows an image of the Bob desktop.
- matthewaaron, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4After leading us on a wild goose chase tonight, I hate Google Maps... does that mean Microsoft Windows loves me now?
- wahooka, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19its from yelp.com not google.
its not like google intentionally put it there, which is what the poster is implying - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -42/+3If only Google spent as much time making sure their mapping data was accurate as they did on stupid pranks like this, GoogleMaps would actually be useful. As it is now, it's just a watered-down version of every other mapping site, with bad directions and a barely passable interface.
***** like this is why Google search went from revolutionary to 99% spam. - SlvrEagle23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+42What harm is there in a little friendly rivalry between huge multinational corporations?
Surely there are plenty of easter eggs around the Live sites, but does anybody notice? Noo!
Try it for yourself...go to Live search and search for "***** Google".
...then come back disappointed. >:D - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21If you posted this in the Apple section, you would have created a riot. Shame on you for doing the right thing.....
- woojoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+326when google takes it down, all you latercomers can still laugh at the screenshot X)

- devilish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37@woojoo --- 100 points for the link.
I followed the link and saw nothing wrong -- thanks for the img! - LocalH, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@mesach: That's not Bob, that's Win9x with the "Mystery" theme in use.
- wesw02, on 10/12/2007, -22/+9This is so awesome.
- hotbeefman, on 10/12/2007, -52/+5I can see my house from here
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -6/+79Hold on, I'll be right over.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -30/+7I can see your mum.
- rushoffailure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Impressive ascent, agent
- 47knight, on 10/12/2007, -9/+119Screen shot in case it ever changes:
http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/626/untitledyp9.jpg- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+193How can you stand working with so many toolbars?
- Riluske, on 10/12/2007, -7/+143Your add-ons scare me
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33Psst, whats the link for that green digg bar. It looks interesting.
- Evolve, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36My god man/woman, got enough tool bars/bookmarks/spyware?
Thats nearly as bad as http://static.flickr.com/19/112803058_b377cdabf9_o.png
How could you even work with that clutter? - mrjoshua, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41You might want to blur out your e-mail address in the image.
- Rummey, on 10/12/2007, -10/+42what are you guys talking about? He only has two extra toolbars -- Web Developer and the Google Search.
Wussies.
Mike - blakex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42It's a greasemonkey script so you can dig the page after actually reading the article...
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7864 - sulf, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7No, he doesn't have too many toolbars at all...
http://robots.org.uk/stuff/WordToolbars.jpg
btw: it's lame for digg not to allow [a][/a] html elements - sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Hm, you just gave us all your email address. I'd change that real quick.
- Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Thank you blakex. You rock my socks.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4How cute he uses myspace often enough to need a button for it, and despite having gmail open he only has a button for hotmail.
Awwww. - KraigR, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4The green bar is a greasemonkey script. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/7864
- CloseYetFar, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5he is using Firefox and it is in Pain...
Dugg this topic just for his screen shot, lol - 47knight, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Too many toolbars? I only have 2!
- Prysorra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20His toolbar has "Scare Tactics".
ALL IS FORGIVEN. - HairyPoter, on 10/12/2007, -19/+4the man should be infested with adwares... too many toolbars, internet explorer, windoze...
- Holk23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I see you were listening to Dead Star from Muse on your faster fox......nice
- fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Some nice addons their 47knight... :P
Same as mine really, CSS toolbars, validators, etc.....the life of a coder huh?
I also have extended my taskbar to 4 lines of tabs...
On my old 15" screen, I had around 10cm of site space in firefox! Now I have doubled it with my new 26" screen! :P
Anyway, onto the subject.....just been bombed thats all! You work out what phrases google uses to find images - you can get any image to display as a google maps image! ;) - shadowpr0ph3t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I thought internet browsers were for looking at web pages? Not toolbars!
- woojoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i know yer email 0_0
- 4ntigravity, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12digg^ for listening to muse
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hah you've got the same problem that I had on my old Firefox install, random blank toolbar before your main toolbar.
I'd get rid of the Google bar as it's useless on Firefox, stick to the search box. Other than that he's just got the web dev toolbar. - ClayDragon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1There should be a special category at digg or even an entire website where people can submit screen-shots of their desktop (preferably with a browser opened) and other people comment on it. One could make millions with such a site...
- theholycow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Oh come on people, grow up and leave 47knight alone...it's not like a content pane is important or anything. I mean, who wants to actually look at information, when you can have one-click access to every tool, command, and website you'll ever use? Then you can just scroll after every two lines of text content!
- Zafras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6No font anti-aliasing makes the eyes bleed! And why does the whole thing look oddly 1999-esq?
- xioner, on 10/12/2007, -7/+193How can you stand working with so many toolbars?
- max1574, on 10/12/2007, -22/+1lawl
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -25/+11Microsoft Windows: just another piece of useless shovelware.
- cyphin6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18You do know users submit locations of business.... so it's not really google
- TroubleT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32It's pulling in the image from http://www.yelp.com/biz/KcWwO1Hc9BqDDgXlfKEAxg?hrid=V41CAxNmtYhcXXdQDNTjxQ
Also, that is not the address of Microsoft's HQ. It's not in Bellevue, it is in Redmond (just a few miles away).- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Even more so the block it shows is apartment complexes next to the Bellevue Village QFC. Interesting since I don't see how Microsoft could have any offices as that address. I know they used to own space in Bellevue Plaza on the corner of Bellevue Way and NE 8th.
- Shark500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://www.yelp.com/bphoto/7kzQucUJFJYQs_yRTcR0bg/
this is the most direct link to it that i can find
- tiffany98121, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3They missed the campus by about 30 blocks, although I think there might be a marketing office where it's pointing to.
- nder, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6pity that's nowhere near campus.
- tiffany98121, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2Hi Keith!
- sdpdt, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4That's pretty cavalier.
- ImprovingLemon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Cavalier Indeed.
Google-1 Microsoft-0
- ImprovingLemon, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Cavalier Indeed.
- TheToecutter, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10Inaccurate. But by all means dig it to the top people...it's never stopped you before. :-/
- cvp1, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8Ok, we will.
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4How the ***** is it inaccurate?
This is clearly automated...
It isn't presenting any type of facts or opinions...
Its a ***** picture!
Who can a thumbnail be inaccurate??
- trubld1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Someone just made another Microsft Corp address, pretending it's the actual thing and just made that image show up when people rolled over it. Not very impossible to do.
- singletrack861, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Not really. If you go to local.google.com and type in Microsoft, it doesn't happen. Maybe a scam?
- astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3MSFT stock just dropped 10% on the weekend-nighttime-asian markets.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Actual Image URL: http://www.google.com/base_image?q=maps:www.yelp.com/bphoto/7kzQucUJFJYQs_yRTcR0bg/l%3Futm_campaign%3Dlocal%26utm_medium%3Dorganic%26utm_source%3Dgoogle&size=4&hl=en (tinyurl didn't seem to work).
- jcembree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2404 Not Found
- phor2zero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Apparently the images google finds for these maps are pretty useless. If you scan over and look at MS headquarters at 1 Microsoft Way, the image is a screenshot from some obscure computer website of a desktop using one of the silly themes that came with Microsoft Plus for Win98.

Or google just pulled the wrong data.
- aquanutz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Why is it that everyone on here is so interested in Anti-Microsoft stuff yet 99% of them use Windows? This just boggles my mind.
(Don't get me wrong, they do suck. That's why I run OS X)- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Because they *think* OS X and *nix sucks more!
Misguided as it may be... - lengau, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6Because they're too damn lazy to get a real OS for their computers.
- firefox15, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3@langau - Be prepared to face the wrath of 99% of the digg population.
- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Also curious is the bit where everyone hates Vista and is converting to Linux because Vista is so bad. But when Vista's cracked and they can use it for free it's huge front page news. Digg users hate Windows and love Linux, but would rather pirate Windows than use Linux.
Bizarre.
- Me1000, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Because they *think* OS X and *nix sucks more!
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4This is the second thing today that makes me think that Google are having a bit of fun at Microsoft's expense.
Take a look at the text under the windows defender search result here:
http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=294663
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=windows+defender&meta=
That text doesn't appear on the actual page, and I don't think MS would have wrote something that stupid.- nevetS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is from the DMOZ directory listing. Google often pulls descriptions directly from DMOZ.
http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=windows+defender
(this was a reply to Darcy quoted below since the threading doesn't seem to have worked)

- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Anyone actually do some research for that street address?? Here's a tip....
http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=25120971
Therefore, SHENANIGANS!!!!!!!! - loconet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It comes from yelp.com
- madeingermany, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it could have been worse... look at the other image, yelp has for that Microsoft entry:

- vasm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0lol!!!
- thomasprebble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Microsoft sues Google and people are surprised there IS animosity towards MS?
- FrugalFreak, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I post great stories such as pink lady with impeach bush shirt behind valerie plame which was true, my post got 4 diggs, yet this crap gets top. The rankings here suck. all that symbol meant not official or main corporate MS offices.
- m0moma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0agreed gary WITHOUT the R story!!
- zippy757, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@frugalfreak ...everyone knows that DIGG is controlled by about 20 readers.... and the days of it being 'the will of the people' are already gone...

- tomis, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I'm not seeing the anti-MS image. It's just a normal Google Maps page here. Bury as Inaccurate.
MacOS X 10.4.9, Safari - pcharles23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9004154504821222648
I made this video in response to this funniness!!!!!
with that exact same picture found on google.! - IdiotDogMachine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I thought it was hilarious when I saw it, unfortunately it has since been taken down.
Using stolen version of Windows XP. - PalmBayChuck, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0This is actually very serious. Google almost singlehandedly controls access to information on the Internet. Just the other day, Digg featured an article titled, "Google as Dictator" (http://www.smallbusinesshub.com/blog/tabid/6307/bid/1318/Google-As-Dictator-5-Most-Devious-Things-It-Could-Do-If-It-Were-Evil.aspx). The fact that they are willing to do this jokingly indicates that they would do it intentionally. It's not funny at all. I would expect Microsoft to be held to the same high standard.
- MrDavis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I don't think that Google chooses each individual picture. They just use whatever pictures others on the web associate with those words.
- SailRacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's fantastic!
- baronvonrolo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Everytime I try and open that more info bit in IE it crashes.
I know that's not the joke, but I think it works just as well. - munky100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats quite funny!
- kubix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Try it for yourself...go to Live search and search for "***** Google".

Damn you.. I actually tried it :P. gave me a laugh, thanks :) - hiskeyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is fake. i actually looked up microsoft the other day and it wasn't like that.
- MikeZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2 no comment I, got the 100th comment!!!

Thanks for posting the screenshots. - plamia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Thanks! I'm not impressed. Butt dugg it for some reason.
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
