Oh, and engadget was incorrect, Zune 30 will be supported. - Rysac1, on 02/20/2008, -5/+80Wireless multiplayer gaming?!? I knew that someday they would utilize the wireless for more than sync or share
- mrtibbs309, on 02/20/2008, -10/+73Hopefully we see some better quality games compared to iPod's current selection.
- diggdiggerid, on 02/20/2008, -6/+66Would it kill them to put a damn clock and shutdown timer on it before all this unncessary crap?
- Checkerd, on 02/21/2008, -1/+43Please, for the love of god and all that is holy, give us Tetris.
- doshindude, on 02/20/2008, -9/+50This is great, the Zune is so much better than the ipod already, this will just make it even better.
- gamer31, on 02/21/2008, -1/+41I have a zune
- LumpOfCole, on 02/21/2008, -4/+43Who would have guessed that the Zune 30 turned out to be such a great buy?
- quikboy, on 02/20/2008, -5/+42Can users even make games for the iPod? Just wondering. I haven't used my iPod and iTunes for awhile. I've bee kinda busy with my new Zune.
- Newedge14, on 02/20/2008, -1/+33Wifi for Live Anywhere? Play against 360 owners? Playable on PC? Want MORE INFO!
but cool nonetheless - ChaoticNick, on 02/20/2008, -1/+33my ol' Zune 30 just keeps getting better and better
- chris9902, on 02/20/2008, -2/+32wifi + .NET?
How long before we get some useful apps like RSS readers? - katanaswordfish, on 02/20/2008, -1/+27This is huge. Allowing indie game devs to make games for the zune is really a massive improvement. I had the origional zune up until my car was broken into a few months back, and i had been debating whether or not to buy a Zune80. Allowing people to play games on their zune over wifi (online or just peer-to-peer?) will be incredible. And due to the fact that virtually anyone can make homebrew games with XNA, their is bound to be a plethora of well made and diverse titles from aspiring indie game developers. Going out and buying a new mp3 player is back on the radar for me, im excited to see how this turns out for the zune. AND, if MS allows people to upgrade their zune80s firmware for free, instead of having to buy a brand new version, it will really be a slap in the face to apple (who tend to make their own products obsolete in order to force people to buy the latest and greatest version. And then there is the whole thing about the ipod touch being nearly the same hardware as the iphone [at a lower price] with missing functionality.)
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -0/+26He didn't say the iPod games weren't good; he's saying he hopes the Zune games will be better.
- EmitStop, on 02/21/2008, -2/+25Maybe someone could make a game that is just a clock.
- afidler, on 02/20/2008, -1/+23Awesome, I was really going to be disappointed if the 30 wasn't supported. Though, I can imagine the 80's touch pad will be much better for gamers and developers alike--perhaps I'll upgrade this christmas... GREAT news, though.
- hresult, on 02/20/2008, -23/+43Awesome, finally some real iPOD killer coming.
- Jereso, on 02/21/2008, -1/+20The only DRM is just having 3 plays of the music file shared over wifi. The marketplace has no DRM.
- FBMGriever, on 02/21/2008, -1/+20freaking*
Actually I have one. I love it. And I love boasting to i-fags that my MP3 player as a more intuitive interface then theirs, has a larger hard drive, cost a helluva lot less, and most importantly, doesn't force anybody to interface with a ***** app. The Zune program is ***** awesome. - xXShadowstormXx, on 02/20/2008, -2/+21No.
- afidler, on 02/20/2008, -1/+19I guess the 6 you're referring to must be my friends who have switched within the last few months. Who, by the way, were ALL former iPod owners.
- lordtyros, on 02/20/2008, -1/+19Hallelujah
- LordSeth, on 02/20/2008, -1/+18I wish the Zune was released in Australia. Hell we dont even get the Iphone in this backwards country.
- mradules, on 02/21/2008, -1/+18That joke got tired before the zune 80 was released.
- MillionsLivio, on 02/21/2008, -0/+16People play games on their cell phones, and the Zune's screen is about two and a half times larger than that.
- benitojuarez, on 02/20/2008, -0/+16...and games arent software at all are they?
- kentifer, on 02/20/2008, -2/+17Now, could you travel up north to Canada, Mr. Zune?
- x1ang, on 02/20/2008, -0/+15The iPod and Zune both pretty much have the same features plus or minus a few (like FM tuner, touchpad vs. wheel, etc). I kind of like the UI of the Zune and prefer the Zune4/8 over the iPod Nanos. The Zune doesn't have an equalizer though and I hate the Zune application to hell, but otherwise I'm pretty damn happy with my Zune4 :D.
- EmitStop, on 02/20/2008, -2/+16Ugly? The 1st generations maybe. But definitely not the new ones.
- keeron, on 02/21/2008, -0/+14As always, engadget is wrong.. Zune 30 is supported:
From their "official" FAQ (http://forums.xna.com/ShowThread.aspx?PostID=46553 ...
Q: Will this feature only work on newer Zune devices?
A: XNA Game Studio 3.0 currently will support Zune 4/8, Zune 30, and Zune 80 devices. - Twiggy794, on 02/21/2008, -0/+12I'm sure somebody will write it.
- MillionsLivio, on 02/21/2008, -1/+13As a former iPod owner, I have a Zune 80 and am in love with it. Most of the people that make fun of the Zune never used one, hell a friend of mine said he hated one, I let him mess around with mine for 10 minutes and he went to go buy one later that week.
- Falldog, on 02/21/2008, -4/+16Buy a ***** watch!
- directive0, on 02/21/2008, -0/+12Yes but in a classic Microsoft fashion, they took an idea and made it massively appealing. They've made it accessible to the hacker scene and the lowly end user. You will likely get your fill of games like bejewlled and things you never even imagined. User generated content is far more in tune with the current consumer market for these things, moreso then licensed 3rd party popcap games and yet won't rule them out. You scoff now, but you will see, Microsoft has made a smart move here.
-a satisfied iPod owner. - Beowulf2112, on 02/21/2008, -3/+14Zunes really are quite the amazing devices... They are on par or better than iPods in almost every catagory, the exception being that you cant get a 160gb Zune.
The problem is people automatically associate portable music with iPods, and while the Zune is exceptional it hasnt gathered much of a fan base. Those who are fans tend to regard the Zune with a certain 'cult leader' mentality.
Microsoft also didnt really follow through with the whole "social" aspect, sure you can share between Zunes, but you have to be in the same room. You cant go to a hotspot and buy music and download it with/to your Zune. Its a great concept, but it wasnt really followed through with - Jereso, on 02/21/2008, -1/+12I have one. The quality of the music and video is AMAZING.
- DeadElephant, on 02/21/2008, -3/+14My 30g ipod video was recently stolen after it fell of my belt somewhere on campus, I don't blame the people for not turning it in, but I was heavily considering buying a replacement Zune in place of it, because they're cheaper and lately i've been hearing nothing but good things about the zune and apple continues to charge way too much ($20 for a software upgrade to an existing product, wtf?) for just about everything, and I think the games just about made my decision for it.
- kentifer, on 02/20/2008, -0/+11Uhmm, yeah. They're creating the software for games, so other people can make them.
Next time rtfa. - eze123, on 02/21/2008, -4/+15Zune costs $250ish for 80 gigs. Ipod touch costs like 400(?) for 16 gigs (although i hear they have a 32 gig coming out). Thats why i bought a Zune, i dont really see the benefits of a touch screen yet.
- MillionsLivio, on 02/21/2008, -1/+11You do not own a Zune.
- TomRemixed, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10They will be doing so. I don't know the exact date but they are announced for sale in Canada.
- Sozzi, on 02/20/2008, -2/+12my zune 80's got a shutdown timer
- Kazbaeden, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10Except apple released ***** like tetris, pac man, and solitaire and had that gall to charge you for them. Microsoft is allowing indie developers to write anything they can dream up, and the best part is you get them for free. Plus you know, wireless multiplayer and compatibility with xbox and PC.
I guess besides all that it's the exact same thing though. - gage006, on 02/21/2008, -0/+10Damn, time to buy XNA just so I can make it and get that claim to fame.
- secleinteer, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10I have an iPod (it's broken now), and I'm looking for a new MP3 player. With all the ***** that Apple has pulled lately (I didn't really like them to begin with anyway), the Zune is a prime option for me.
- eze123, on 02/21/2008, -1/+10Got one. Better value than itouch
- bxblox, on 02/20/2008, -4/+13What makes a zune less funtional that an ipod? I dont own either so i really dont know.
- inactive, on 02/21/2008, -0/+9Why would you buy XNA??? XNA is free. Running the XNA games on windows is free. Publishing them on live is what costs the $99 a year.
- estvir, on 02/21/2008, -0/+9Yeah, and Apple added WiFi to the iPod Touch after the Zune launched with it.
Who freaking cares about "X copying y?" Only loser fanboys do, the rest of us applaud competition. - DeadElephant, on 02/21/2008, -0/+8at least give details as to why, dammit.
