- brstilson, on 02/02/2009, -11/+62Isn't it kind of funny how everyone just deemed Windows 7 as this great, awesome thing?
Of course, it would fit the pattern. Microsoft introduced brand new technology with Windows 3.0, but it was crap, and then Windows 3.1 came out shortly thereafter and it was widely regarded as what 3.0 should have been.
Microsoft introduced brand new technology with Windows 95, but it was crap, and then Windows 98 came out shortly thereafter and it was widely regarded as what 95 should have been.
Microsoft introduced brand new technology with Windows ME, but it was crap, and then Windows XP came out shortly thereafter and it was widely regarded as what ME should have been.
Now brand new technology is introduced with Vista, but it is crap, and now Windows 7 is coming out shortly thereafter and will probably be regarded as what Vista should have been. - Rev0lver, on 02/02/2009, -7/+53MS gives us three versions, people complain about unnecessary features and bloated installations. MS gives us multiple versions that tailor to our needs, and people still flip a *****.
As for how much it is...go ahead and calculate how often Apple releases an OS versus Microsoft, and calculate how much people spend. You'll find that you'd be spending more on Apple. Linux is still irrelevant until it can manage to be as flexible and user friendly as Windows, whether you like it or not. - strangewill, on 02/02/2009, -2/+39Anyone that compares ME to XP has no clue as to what they're talking about in terms of computers. Sorry, Windows for Workgroups and NT development were two entirely different branches of operating systems. Better to compare 2000 and XP.
- erikerikerik, on 02/02/2009, -8/+37Vist is not that bad.
However W7 is just that much better. - stutimandal, on 02/02/2009, -6/+34Waiting for a gamma version. Do not disappoint me, please.
- kspanks04, on 02/02/2009, -6/+33As great as the beta is, I can't wait to see the final release.
- steger, on 02/02/2009, -2/+24No it means that they actually did a good job.
- hyperspaztik, on 02/02/2009, -6/+28I just made Windows 7 the primary operating system on my laptop. It's got a Core 2 Duo, 4 gigs of RAM, and a 128GB SSD, and this OS is fast! It boots up so much quicker than Vista did on here and I love the layout much better. When the Beta is up in August, I don't know what I am going to do.
- litolist, on 02/02/2009, -4/+26Buy a copy?
- Loonacy, on 02/02/2009, -1/+20You're forgetting that when Windows 98 came out it was crap, and then Windows 98 SE came out shortly thereafter and it was widely regarded as what 98 should have been.
- JamesWjRose, on 02/02/2009, -0/+18I would really sugest that you move to Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Even if you don't have multiple computers to connect the .11 version is much better than just 3.1.
Hope that helps ;) - Jektal, on 02/02/2009, -5/+22Can you dual boot Win7 Alpha and Win7 Omega, or would that create SkyNet?
- strangewill, on 02/02/2009, -1/+15If you whine and don't submit bug reports, you're part of the problem, not the solution. Shut up until you file some reports.
- BabyWookie, on 02/02/2009, -3/+16That really depends on what you do. A lot of people just ***** play games, browse the web and do a bunch of other trivial stuff on their PCs.
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -1/+14It's beta. Beta's have bugs. Submit your feedback.
- Rethcir, on 02/02/2009, -0/+13Bitch about apple, bitch about MS, bitch about ubuntu... EVERYTHING SUCKS!
- Rev0lver, on 02/02/2009, -4/+16You expect Joe Schmoe to figure out what he wants out of it? And why pay for features I don't plan to use?
- Twiggy794, on 02/02/2009, -5/+16Sounds like an OS X update.
- benologist, on 02/02/2009, -4/+14This was already confirmed yesterday or the day before.... congrats @ techradar for winning a bunch of ad impressions off digg's uncanny ability to be gamed.
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -0/+10Yes, the vendors dropped the ball. I'm not blaming microsoft at all here, i'm blaming the vendors and explaining what that the real issues with Vista were never Vista.
- Elranzer, on 02/02/2009, -0/+9He also forgot that Windows XP was an upgrade to Windows 2000, not ME.
ME was the end of the MS-DOS infrastructure. - IpwnZnoobs, on 02/02/2009, -4/+13Personally I can't wait for the Omega version.
- yurimxpxman, on 02/02/2009, -0/+8Yeah, the glory days of Microsoft. Back when I didn't have anything else to compare it to, and I used it mainly for playing games whose titles ended in "Quest", and people still used the term "computerized."
- Madcow17, on 02/02/2009, -0/+7Weird.. i'll never understand that ascii.. Why is that guy trying to balance a dented wheel of cheese on his forearm?
- DeadlyNinja, on 02/02/2009, -11/+18I'm going back to Windows 3.1
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -3/+10They have always said there would be only 1 beta release. This is nothing new.
- Slizzo, on 02/02/2009, -3/+9Bull crap they needed time! The 3rd party vendors all had well over a year to write their drivers for Vista. This was more about the 3rd parties dropping the ball (Creative especially) than a misstep by Microsoft.
- jakem1, on 02/02/2009, -1/+7Who said that?
- kmoed, on 02/02/2009, -1/+7God only knows that your heart will probably stop and your head will explode before you get enough time to re-install your OS.
/sarcasm - archer75, on 02/02/2009, -1/+6says the person who hasen't used it.
- inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5Ugh... grunt no like windows vista
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5Yes, I do. If you aren't submitting feedback then there is no way for them to help you. That is the whole purpose of a beta. It's not a "try before you buy". It's purpose if for users to test it for bugs and report them.
That said I do not have the problem you have, nor have I spoken with anyone else who has. - archer75, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5There is support now. Download drivers direct from those sites and install. Problem solved.
I have both an Nvidia card and a Soundblaster x-fi. No issues. - MxM111, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5Ah! I will still stick with Norton Commander and MS Dos for couple more years.
- SarcasticGenius, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5If you aren't interested, then don't click on the story or commnets link.
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -3/+7The problem with vista wasen't vista. It was 3rd parties and their drivers. They needed time to learn how to write them for a new OS as the driver model has changed. Windows 7 uses the same driver model and uses the same drivers which have had time to mature now.
- yurimxpxman, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Chex Quest was the best game ever made (exceeding Doom). King's Quest was also very awesome.
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Actually all ME did was add new features. The OS was just 98 with no code changes.
- kmoed, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Win95B anyone?
- EllimistX, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Probably not. Most often, beta software cannot be updated to the final thing, and will require a reinstall. As for updating to a release candidate, same thing. My memory is a little foggy but I think Vista Beta 2-->Pre-RC1-->RC1-->RC2-->RTM all required a reinstall. Make sure to backup anything important.
- pyroguy56011, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5That, and the fact that Linux would confuse 90% of the computer-using population. I know plenty of internet junkies who don't have the time, patience, or skills to get Linux to do what they want it to, so how in the world is my Dad or teacher going to figure it out? People on the internet tend to forget that they're a very small minority, and the rest of the world really can't be assed to spend two and a half hours fixing the most trivial issues on their computer.
- muzzymate, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4My favorite was Space Quest with Gary Owens narrarating.
- archer75, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4I don't see any developers bragging.
- mediamaker, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4warning: many .fla files won't open in Flash under Windows 7 beta. I had to roll back to Vista to finish a project. Otherwise Win 7 is Win. http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messa ...
- STKD, on 02/02/2009, -1/+4"Windows 7 will corrupt MP3's if you don't get the KB update."
Only if you use Windows Media Player to play them. Otherwise, no problem. - Jektal, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3What else is happening in the tech world? A dozen articles about how Linux has now reached the mainstream?
- Azathothh, on 02/02/2009, -1/+4good luck playing Crysis in that
- Elranzer, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3They tried to hide MS-DOS in ME.
- twigboy, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3mlavergn: "Show me where I can get 5 Windows 7 Profesional licenses for $199."
whats the point of installing osx anywhere else when you need specialised *cough* hardware to run the thing properly? - Kazbaeden, on 02/02/2009, -0/+3Windows ME had a bunch of great new features, but ultimately was very very unstable. I remember it used to blue screen at least once every day.
Some of the new features it had were some new media features like picture previews, Auto Updates, uPnP, and built in generic USB drivers.
In one of the labs I work in, we have a windows 98 computer. I connected a USB stick to it, and it told me I needed drivers, then proceeded to crash. Some people don't realize how far we've come. -
