- quikboy, on 11/14/2007, -19/+159My list of why the Zune 80 goes above the iPod Classic 80GB:
1. FM Radio - yeah, many people really like listening to the radio. I get local news, prize drawings, etc.
2. Tons of customization - Now you have changeable background menus, laser engravings, cases, and any other way you can imagine. Zune one-ups by customizable background pictures.
3. WiFi syncing - Sync to your computer wirelessly! Nuff' said.
4. Subscription music service on ZMP - some people prefer to 'rent' their music than 'buy' the music. Zune gives you BOTH options
5. No scratches - I'm betting the Zune 80 is as scratch-less as the first gen.
6. Stronger durability - Like the 1st gen, these should be too. Many of my iPods have broken. So do many other people.
7. NO bulky iTunes program! - I hate iTunes. Messy interface, memory hog, too many small updates, etc.
8. Big screen! - I love watching videos on a bigger screen.
9. LARGE album art - Zune was the first to truly appreciate album art. CoverFlow and other things didn't come until after.
10. Sharing music, pics, podcasts - It's the ability to do that, that makes me happy. If I find another user.. (which there will be many with this Zune)
11. Premium headphones
12. ZunePad - the best of both worlds. I don't like an all-touch device, but I don't like clicking down everything either. Best of BOTH
13. More format support - I think Zune support far more media formats than the iPod (like WinMedia!)
14. They really look nice - maybe not so nice as iPod simplistic, but they really do look nice.
15. Sync with Windows Media Center - love this!
16. Audio sounds much better, better quality (CNET says so)
17. Zune Social - music discoverability!
18. Best alternative to the iPod there can be
19. Better tech support - That's what I've heard. The Zune support team appears to be pretty helpful. I remember waiting a while until the iPod support can get here (probably because of the so many problems)
20. Did I mention the WiFi syncing? : )
So I'm definitely getting a Zune 80. I'm tired of iPods. I'm willing to move on to better things, and give them a try. So these are my top reasons for picking the Zune 80 over the iPod. Can you think of anymore? - bblande, on 11/13/2007, -2/+40Zune marketplace will now have DRM-free music.
Win. - lacronicus, on 11/13/2007, -4/+29OK, killer feature: you can initiate wireless syncing from a PC as well. I can't imagine how useful that will be.
- gojcaj, on 11/13/2007, -1/+25he cant imagine.
- gojcaj, on 11/13/2007, -1/+23Coming ZUNE
- quikboy, on 11/14/2007, -8/+28Show me a Microsoft PR site that has all this. Give me a link.
I guess you're not free to expression your opinions, in such a positive and outlandish way if it's a Microsoft product. Right? Of course, it's always ok to go on how wonderful an Apple product is, and not be assumed that you might get paid to promote Apple's stuff in media, TV, and even in real life. No way. - Typhoon2009, on 11/14/2007, -4/+23Once my iPod goes down, or if I go over 4GB, I think I'll get a Zune
- aywwts4, on 11/13/2007, -9/+255. No scratches - I'm betting the Zune 80 is as scratch-less as the first gen.
Absolutely true, Having owned one zune and 3 ipods, *checks zune* ...it has a few faint scratches on the scroll wheel. Compared to my 4th gen ipod, which you can only see the screen in certain lighting conditions, though my Ipod Mini held up fairly well. (apparently the new zune has a glass screen, so that should be even better)
7. NO bulky iTunes program! - I hate iTunes. Messy interface, memory hog, too many small updates, etc.
A version of windows media player is not a lightweight program, not to mention how buggy it is, and how often it crashes (especially installing the program or renaming files) and as a +1 to the ipod, you dont have to use crummy itunes, you can use winamp or one of the open source solutions to media syncing, with a zune you can't.
16. Audio Quality.
I agree, I can't compare it to a 5th gen but compared to a 4th gen 20 gig, a Micro, and a Nano on Grado headphones, the sound quality is there, especially in higher bitrate files, and especialy compared to the 4th gen.
13. More format support
Still no flac or ogg, the only two other formats that really matter, and for that matter Divx when it comes to video.
17. Zune Social
Dont... Dont even MENTION the "Social" thats the biggest load of marketing ***** ever, I know one guy with a zune, and I know A LOT of technophiles and that one guy with a zune, we share no musical interests. - AmazingAndrex, on 11/14/2007, -4/+20YES! Finally I've found someone else that thinks iTunes is a memory hog!
- lacronicus, on 11/14/2007, -0/+15Tomorrow, along with the new Zunes.
- elmasto, on 11/13/2007, -3/+15Upgraded the firmware for the old zune...so that you can keep using the old one... What about apple? They want you to buy a new one every time they release a new edition....
- joegibes, on 11/13/2007, -6/+18WMP > iTunes
- zip22, on 11/13/2007, -1/+12how useful will that be?
- randomvictim, on 11/13/2007, -1/+12When will the update be available? I have a Zune 30 and am anticipating the release but can't find any information on the new software release date.
- leo78, on 11/13/2007, -3/+14"7. NO bulky iTunes program! - I hate iTunes. Messy interface, memory hog, too many small updates, etc."
Did they get rid of that horrendous Zune software?
And no I don't use Itunes for my Ipod. - Typhoon2009, on 11/13/2007, -2/+12I'm gonna do the same move a lot of iPhone fanboys did when people pointed out its various missing features (like MMS) - those things you listed can probably put in with a software / firmware update.
- Rupan, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10Yes, and iPod is so much better. Neither make sense.
- HUKI365, on 11/13/2007, -1/+10artop: When someone says "Pandora - music discoverability" or "Last.Fm - music discoverability" - do they lose credibility as well?
- lacronicus, on 11/13/2007, -7/+14so because they find that to be a decent feature and you dont, everything else they say can't be trusted? great logic there.
- LincolnA, on 11/13/2007, -1/+8FM tuner is awesome. At the gym all the TVs have audio on the low FM frequencies. It's cool to pause the music when I see a news story or a sports play or something I want to listen to, then just switch right back when it's done.
- sauron256, on 11/13/2007, -2/+8I don't think the reviewer gets the point. Windows Media Player should be your media center, not the Zune software which is basically "WMP Lite" for those who want to just move music across quickly.
- fradro, on 11/13/2007, -2/+8how come nobody is talking about the Vista Media Center integration?? I wanna learn more about that
- chriskeyes, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6I love Zune. And I love WMP 11.
After the 1st Zune software, I really wished the Zune team would re-do the ZMP and integrate the whole thing into WMP 11 instead. It's far more stable, better UI, and I pretty much think WMP 11 is the best media managing/playback program there is. At least better than iTunes. There's far more devices that work with it, more online stores, TONS of ways to customize and add-on to it, I could go on and on. I thought it was rather sad Microsoft dropped it, to follow a more successful way like iTunes + iPod. Except Microsoft failed on it.
The point is, is that I just wished they would really tweak it, and put it on WMP 11. I just love that program to play my media. - geoken, on 11/13/2007, -0/+6Textbook fanboy. It isn't enough to say he's indifferent on a given feature, he has to try and lessen the importance of that feature as much as possible even going so far as to insult anyone who may like said feature (ie.wanting to change your background must mean your an immature 13yr old girl who spends 80% of her time on MySpace). This kid even managed to spin the fact that MS gives you decent headphones as a bad thing, amazing.
- convergent, on 11/13/2007, -3/+9Dugg for the screenshot of the video with 2 girls kissing.
- TomRemixed, on 11/13/2007, -1/+7WTF no id3 tag editing?
At least they kept the thing that finds the album info. I'm not one to use smart playlists or eq presets but these features should be in the software any way. Almost every media playing program has these features. - chriskeyes, on 11/13/2007, -4/+10Zune does have Gapless.
And Zune did have smart playlists. They were just called auto playlists.
It does have song ratings. 5-star scale is the best.
Battery life? I think most devices run on a battery?
Not many people know how to use it, but I love Windows Media Center. It's essentially like TiVo, except you can put it on your computer. Now with the Zune, you can take your shows anywhere. I so love WMC.
Most of the other reasons are small. I have a watch, so a clock isn't so important. Games? You do remember this is a product in just it's 2nd generation, right?
So you're pretty wrong, mister. - kevnaca, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5NM I just read that there isn't smart playlists any more. Seems strange that they would remove that.
- fradro, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5yea.. 12AM Pacific time
- chriskeyes, on 11/13/2007, -1/+6@artpop:
I think he was just starting to list out features, and what they did. I don't think the iPod has something Zune Social-like, does it? - zip22, on 11/13/2007, -0/+5they also removed playcounts.
- razrielle, on 11/14/2007, -0/+5well someone could keep the zune in their car and just keep it plugged into a fm transmitter
- theragu40, on 11/13/2007, -2/+71. Ok
2. Incorrect. Yes it does.
3. True
4. True
5. This would be nice, yeah.
6. Still has ratings...just not as complicated. Do people really rate their songs anyway?
7. True, but meh. That's what I have a cell phone for.
8. Again...that's what I have a phone for. I don't need to check someone's address on my mp3 player
9. Have you ever played the ipod games? They suck ass.
10. True...and this would be nice. Not really a deal-breaker though.
11. Is it that hard to plug your player in overnight? Who listens to music on their player for 14 hours between charges?
12. I'd rather get them for free, personally.
So...I agree with some of what you said...but at the same time, I would say that your list is pretty tailored to your own personal needs. I had an ipod, and I never used the vast majority of the 'features' you list. That doesn't mean that no one does, obviously, but I can speak as a happy Zune owner that I wouldn't go back to the ipod now that I've left it. - turpenine, on 11/13/2007, -2/+7really so useful that you absolutely NEED your new tunes when you are in another room and cannot plug in your zune? remember kids, still gotta charge the thing.
- b-dizzle, on 11/14/2007, -2/+7I don't think giz used the old software that much... in the article they said it was close to as good as iTunes, but as a Zune user, I completely disagree. It's basically a slower, buggier, more limited version of WMP11. I found it bad enough that I only used it to sync things to my Zune; for everything else I used MediaMonkey. I just hope the new software is stable and snappy. New stuff like autoplaylists can be added quite easily at a later time.
- Crimsoneer, on 11/13/2007, -2/+7Stop diggin this guy down...as much as I hate to say it as a Zune owner, he is right about most of it. Read the article.
- skyshock1, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4I would consider a Zune, if it weren't for the Cowon iAudio X5. Plays all my formats (ogg, FLAC, mp3), uses drag/drop interface for music x-fer, better graphic EQ, works w/ Windows/OSX/Linux... not even a question in my mind. But if that thing wasn't available on the market, I'd probably look at a Zune.
- zanderw00t, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5Well, if you have the zune hooked up to the radio when you are at home and such, you can start the sync at the computer after you are done d/ling your music.
Just an idea. - McTim, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Alvin and the chipmunks read Pride and Prejudice?
- mretx, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5I was seriously thinking of giving it a try but then I read 'no smartplaylists'. it may not be a big deal for some, but i listen to music exclusively through smart playlists; based on play count, date added .. etc.
- theragu40, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4Ah. That kind of sucks I guess. Then again, I usually just set it to "rock" and leave it there for whatever I'm listening to...classical, rock, or otherwise. So I suppose it won't affect me too much.
- Fett101, on 11/13/2007, -4/+8iTunes is the reason I have an iPod. I'd consider a Zune when they code something decently powerful enough to manage my library.
- GamerSDG, on 11/13/2007, -1/+5Can't wait for my firmware update and new marketplace.
- modifiedbears, on 11/13/2007, -0/+316gb just isn't enough storage.
- skyshock1, on 11/13/2007, -2/+5My 4G iPod definitely does NOT have gapless playback, and it totally sucks ass. My old Rio karma did, and it was awesome until the HDD died. :(
- aywwts4, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4Super Mario and a 'free' zune 1.5 on the same day, kickass.
- estvir, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4Hahahah, there's like what, 1 positive article about Microsoft for every 73 negative ones -- and that's only the ones that make it to the frontpage, not the amount of submitted ones.
What, you can't take 2 articles where the Zune is portrayed as better [in SOME ways] than the iPod, and one article isn't even Gizmodo's writing, it's just them linking to other reviews. Get over it, you skirt. - kirk06, on 11/13/2007, -1/+4Oh jesus..Grow up
- aywwts4, on 11/13/2007, -2/+5I understand there is differences of opinion, but some of your Facts are just plain wrong. For one a zune has EQ presets, I dont use the ipod's or the zune's since they distort the music, but its there for people who think more bass is better.
Also, my zunes battery life is measurably better than my ipod's (probably mainly) due to the lack of a clock, which I admit I miss sometimes. - sirhomer, on 11/13/2007, -1/+3Zune does not work on Linux or OS X.
