- subgeniusd, on 11/22/2007, -9/+78I started (at home) with XP SP2 and have never seen one of those. IE 6 f*ckups froze the desktop a couple times requiring power shutdown (practically as bad a a BSOD) but after dumping IE a few years ago my last XP unit runs without a hiccup.
And despite use of and support for Linux I've had several general system crashes with different distros that were the Linux equivalent of BSODs. Calling _any_ OS "rock solid" is a joke. - BlackCow, on 11/22/2007, -6/+41My uptime on my Vista desktop has been about a month and a half and counting. My Ubuntu server uptime has been like 3 months. So shut it fanboy.
- supermanred, on 11/22/2007, -5/+32Go Banana!

Rock solid. - stalefries, on 11/22/2007, -1/+20Insomniac, are yew a reply expert?
- NJPENSO, on 11/22/2007, -9/+27not even 5 comments and the fanboys attack. Go preach somewhere else!
- Jett3, on 11/22/2007, -1/+19PC Load Letter, what the ***** does that mean?
- doublehead, on 11/22/2007, -11/+29Go Microsoft!!
- inactive, on 11/22/2007, -1/+1950 diggs and down, mirror anyone?
- iaindings, on 11/22/2007, -2/+19In the 3 years of working in IT (and being an MCP - yes, throw stones if you like), I've seen plenty BSODs. However, most people see them and just think "windows has messed up", no one seems to realise they are actually there to tell you something. Generally they are just telling you something is seriously broken - RAM or hard drive etc.. but broken RAM is Microsoft's fault right?
I enjoyed learning of the PSOD when I was on a VMware course - the purple screen of death. - iaindings, on 11/22/2007, -1/+17OSX won't crash if you have bad ram? Incredible.
- BlackJackJester, on 11/22/2007, -12/+27i haven't seen a BSOD for probably 5 years...maybe I'm just really bad with windows or something.
- EXTER, on 11/22/2007, -11/+25Some of the pics are photoshopped.
- ihate2reg4u, on 11/22/2007, -2/+13My favorite:
http://shimmie.shishnet.org/v2/post/view/1283 - ddorent, on 11/22/2007, -14/+25cmon, collection of BSODs? at what year are we, 1998?
- inactive, on 11/22/2007, -5/+15Yes. Really! Go! Microsoft - Go as far away as possible.
- Tenoq, on 11/22/2007, -1/+11I think his server BSOD.
- Slugger, on 11/22/2007, -2/+11http://www.gamecheats.eu.nyud.net:8090/blog/collec ...
- Roger, on 11/22/2007, -15/+24That might have been true back in the Windows 95/98 days, but XP is about as stable as Linux/X.
I've haven't had a BSOD in probably 3 years. - SeBBBe, on 11/22/2007, -2/+11XP is indeed very solid, but it's given me many bluescreens in the years I've used it. Some apps even make it BSOD instantly (I have an app right here that I could prove it with). I'm not implying this is Microsoft's fault or a problem with XP, but I just find it weird that people say they've never seen a BSOD. If you say it only happens if you have driver trouble, well I've had driver trouble several times. Vista's given me one or two BSODs as well due to reasons I dont quite remember now. BSODs usually don't come randomly though, but I've gotten some pretty random ones while playing various games.
For the record, I've been running XP on a Dell Dimension and now a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo. - Darcy, on 11/22/2007, -5/+14Thank god nothing like this ever happens to OSX and Linux machines.
http://images.google.co.uk/images?num=100&hl=en&sa ... - bitspace, on 11/22/2007, -0/+82 months is really no big deal... it is ultimately a unix box after all, and it's not uncommon to see a unix box with 500+ days of uptime. My personal record for an intel box is 570 days with linux 1.2.13 and that was many years ago.
- dixonHill, on 11/22/2007, -0/+8My new favourite BSOD: http://x86code.com/bsod.bmp
- GuacamoleSan, on 11/22/2007, -0/+8BSOD Titties ftw
- duckyinc, on 11/22/2007, -2/+8Did you ever feel the need to kick your computer because some website on digg just crashed?
- Subvexer, on 11/23/2007, -0/+6This place is lucky I'm not armed.
- ReFracture, on 11/22/2007, -2/+8Thats exactly it. Theres always some 0x00000 message with some other digits and letters at the end. You punch that into gooogle and wala, you get the explanation.
My last BSOD was from bad ram. Replaced it. No issues since. - andrewgriffiths, on 11/22/2007, -1/+7I swear... one of these days I'll just.... throw this piece of ***** out the window.
- xXMetalJesusXx, on 11/22/2007, -3/+9I've seen XP SP2 go into BSOD tons of times...
- l33tspam, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5They are called BCP codes. =]
I had the same problem, geil 1gb stick died, replaced it with another, ran perfectly. - sirhomer, on 11/23/2007, -1/+6You must be real young or BSing.
- Darcy, on 11/22/2007, -2/+7Blue screens are nearly always caused by drivers or hardware faults, and considering Vista had only just shipped when you tried it, I think it's safe to say your problem was down to an immature driver, not Vista itself. If your drivers are all good quality and up to date, you should not have a problem with stability or performance.
- Evolutuon, on 11/22/2007, -14/+19In all my years of using windows, not once have I experienced the BSOD. What could I possibly be doing wrong? -er right?
- JonForTheWin, on 11/23/2007, -0/+4I stole something from initech.
- Nossie, on 11/23/2007, -0/+4ala PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA
or that one with the memory pool that I cant remember.... ram issues
BUT
if you get IRQL_NOT_lESS_THAN_EQUAL you'll spend the rest of your existence trying to trace that one down because its usually related to dodgy drivers. Unless you see NV4.DLL and you can pretty much guess its your nvidia card. - KungFuJesus, on 11/22/2007, -3/+7I get BSODs at least once a week, these nvidia drivers hate me for some reason
- Darcy, on 11/22/2007, -5/+9If blue screens are so common, then why is there a need to use photoshopped photos to make up the numbers?
- Rammsteined, on 11/22/2007, -5/+9Just because you haven't seen something doesn't mean nobody else has.
- Nossie, on 11/23/2007, -1/+4So wait.... you've used PCs regularly... for a whole decade... and you've NEVER had a fatal freeze, reboot or kernel panic in all that time?
???
hahahahahahahha !!
that joke just made my night, tell me another! - Lunarbunny, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Hell, I can't even run usplash for Ubuntu on my 8800GTS/Athlon64 3800+ X2 because it often causes a kernel panic. Hello geeky text boot!
- solidsnake1298, on 11/22/2007, -2/+5Theres obviously something wrong with your laptop hardware or drivers. I've used Vista on my gaming desktop since launch and it has been a smooth ride for me. I have yet to have to reformat it.
BTW. Check these patches out.

Fixes many issues that most people have with Vista. They are going to be included in SP1 and address file copy speed, stability and compatibility issues that SOME people are having. - SeBBBe, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I would admit to pushing my system harder than most people, definitely. Also, I haven't had any hardware fail on me except for some old mouse and the 30 MiB harddrive that used to be in my IBM PS/2 286 =)
- ElGigi, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3"press any key" :P
- MattBD, on 11/23/2007, -0/+3Thanks for that, I might give those a try this weekend. I figure it must be the drivers rather than the hardware since Linux works OK.
- thomashauk, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3My last BSOD was also bad ram, except typing the code in gave the following:
Driver,
Bios setting,
Virus,
Hard drive...
Basically everything but the ram! - ratsg, on 11/23/2007, -0/+3Don't fall for it Rammsteined. He's lying or trolling.
- Darcy, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3I wouldn't mind getting a few blue screens like that.
- djbon2112, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Oh my god! It's as good as they say! Gotta install it on a machine with some dead ram! Save me the trouble of RMAing it!
- ussr2003, on 11/22/2007, -1/+4fail
- raitchison, on 11/22/2007, -1/+4I'll never understand what motivates someone to post a duggmirror link before checking that duggmirror got it.
