- firefox15, on 10/10/2007, -7/+220But how will he support his family without a job?
- knowyourrights, on 10/10/2007, -9/+136Bill gets my utmost respect. Especially that now he's planning on spending most of his time in philanthropic and humanitarian/eradicating HIV efforts.

I wish the best of luck to him. I have a feeling he's just getting started. - nofrak1, on 10/10/2007, -4/+107I don't think Microsoft can complain about what Gates has done for them, even if they do have competition.
- oblivinated, on 10/10/2007, -8/+76Linux and Mac fanboys say what you want, but Bill gates is a great guy. He shaped the computer industry as we know it today. Windows might not be the best, but there's a reason why it's the most used. He deserves a little respect.
- consonance, on 10/10/2007, -3/+62I think Microsoft needs new management, or at least someone to replace Balmer.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -1/+55A jump to conclusions mat
- SCARECR0W, on 10/10/2007, -10/+61"Don't let the door hit you on the ass" - Balmer

- newstart, on 10/10/2007, -1/+47Unemployement insurance
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+47Gates have done more for society than Jobs, Jobs just gave you scratch-able iPods.
digg me down if you disagree. - piratearggghhh, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37Poor guy, all he wanted was his red stapler back.
- VEGETAble, on 10/10/2007, -8/+38Gates really isn't all that relevant to Microsoft anymore, especially as he's usually off to the side concentrating on more important things (charities).
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -5/+32Huh? Microsoft is in its fourth decade http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft , has an overwhelming OS market share, and Gates is one of the wealthiest men who has ever lived, not to mention funding one of the largest charitable foundations on the planet. Neither he nor MS is powerless. Evil, perhaps, but not powerless.
- TimTheGreat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24*dances like a monkey*
- slickrate, on 10/10/2007, -5/+27since when has any company never been challenged by competition?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Maybe now you linux turds will have to find a new boogeyman.
- schrutefan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20What exciting news. Bill Gates is going to leave Microsoft just like he said he would. BREAKING.
- cquinnd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+21Agreed, and with Ray Ozzie taking his place, it might be a good time for the company to look at new ways to compete.
- mozzep, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19a few that come to mind are Standard Oil, US Steel, the NFL, MLB, and NBA.
- vfrex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Great idea. Let's let one of the 15 year old armchair generals on Digg take over. They would know better than someone with experience, right?
- venom8599, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20Really? Wow. I never knew that. /sarcasm
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20I wonder if he will, or already has begun a secret life of crime fighting?
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18Exactly. If Microsoft hadn't joined the race It was their fear that Sony would release a Playstation that was a media center capable of competing with PCs. The whole point of the xbox is to keep Sony from competing with the PC. They've said before that it isn't about the money they make directly from the xbox but the money they save themselves from losing to future competitors.
- ClOlD, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I used to hate Gates, seeing as he hasn't directly coded in years, and his business sense is more about amalgamation than innovation, but after working in non-profit fundraising for a few years, I've got to say he's on the right track with his philanthropy.
Few other funds provide the sheer dollar-power his does, nor with the willingness the B&MGF does. - MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -9/+23I have a lot of respect for this man because of the charity organization he and his wife started.
- loconet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14I really rather Ballmer left.
- Yazilliclick, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17Vista is a good OS. Your grammar on the other hand...
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Hmmm. I don't want an OS that's in beta for its entire lifespan.
- oblivinated, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13COLLEGE ***** BOARD. High school and college students know that College Board has a monopoly, and there's nothing we can do about it.
- Spr0k3t, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Bill: Make sure you take monkeyboy ballmer with you...
- avisotin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13I ***** LOVE COLORING!!!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12There money what?
- agimat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11cough, ICANN, cough..
- felyduw, on 10/10/2007, -8/+17"He shaped the computer industry as we know it today" - Exactly the point.
- Eddible, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12He is important because I think he has been the driving force that has got Microsoft where it is today. However, I think they need to get someone young in to replace him to revive the creativity a bit. Too many Microsoft execs are relatively old and, I think, a bit stuck in their ways.
- TheSkinsFactory, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9All I know is, if he applies himself to his charity work the same way he did with Microsoft with the same fervor, then world will be a much better place. I have no doubt he will accomplish great things.
- rabiddachshund, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11A reality TV show!
- jull1234, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13My question is whether or not Slashdot will retain their 'bill gates as a borg' icon for Microsoft stories after he leaves..
- Ravatar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8amid the new privacy concerns over Google's operation, I'm not so sure I want them at the OS level.
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10a bad haircut. Seriously, it makes money. Look at Trump.
- phantom_mullet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Are you seriously comparing Bill Gates to Al Capone? GTFO!
- nju0843, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I just hope Bill can find another job after this. I mean, after working for one company for so long, he kind of put himself in a niche. Who'd want to hire him? ;)
- sk545, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7well, from a pure business standpoint, you have to give it to Gates. He did awesome. Good luck, mang!

Google would have to double itself to buy Microsoft. - simpleid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7i don't believe you
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Don't forget what Bill has done for the world as well. He is one of the biggest philanthropists around.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8You will still use it.
- N10E, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7You need to cut out his heart and eat it to obtain his power
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Yeah, hopefully we'll never evolve as a species, obsessed with petty, imagined differences.
- BigMrWiggly, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6That went right over your head.
