- duckyinc, on 06/27/2008, -8/+115His reputation is bad on digg, that's not the world..
- bstory, on 06/27/2008, -5/+111Good on ya Bill... take some of that money and change the world for the better!
- phorty40, on 06/27/2008, -7/+105As much as everyone would like to hate on the godfather of the modern digital age , you MUST acknowledge that it very well might not be possible to interact and carry on as we do without him.
He is a revolutionary in his own right and a huge philanthropist as well. - DrCrankenstein, on 06/27/2008, -41/+117For a guy with the reputation of being an *****, he's doing a hell of a lot for the world.
- pricees, on 06/27/2008, -8/+72Bill Gates is one of the greatest men of the 20th century, definitely one of the most influential.
When I was a kid I dabbled in a crap os called Walnut Creek Slackware. It booted up but didn't run anything, especially the warez I was pirating. I ran it because Bill Gates and Microsoft were the arch villians of the computer world.
Oh how times have changed.
Take care Bill! We will miss you.
- Ubuntu User. - rudy23, on 06/27/2008, -7/+70Am not really sure who thinks he is an *****.
- mofo269, on 06/27/2008, -4/+64Goosebumps... the world has totally changed and his ambition and competitive spirit has had a lot to do with it. At least to those of us who remember daily life without a computer.
- snerge, on 06/27/2008, -6/+64Got to respect the man.
- Pake, on 06/27/2008, -7/+54Mostly Apple fanboys is my guess, because anyone else would look past his role at Microsoft and recognize how truly great the guy is with helping the world.
- inactive, on 06/27/2008, -2/+42He made history...
- AndrewDB, on 06/27/2008, -5/+40Hope to see ya on XBox Live soon Bill... We still gotta do that Forza 2 race. :)

Man, I can't wait to see what he does in his philanthropic days. - gimmeslack12, on 06/27/2008, -3/+35It's the retirement of a founding father in the world of modern computing.
- benologist, on 06/27/2008, -1/+33Jobs seems to be allergic to philanthropy while Gates does more than most charities combined. That makes Gates a much better man to be honest, and he will always be a better man until Jobs decides to contribute more to humanity than mp3 players.
- rebotfc, on 06/27/2008, -1/+31So long, and thanks for all the fish.
- limestarch, on 06/27/2008, -1/+31Hard not to respect a man who chooses to give and will give a lot of his time and more importantly money to improve the lives of others.
- ElBeh, on 06/27/2008, -1/+26THIS. IS. MICROSOFT!
- rudy23, on 06/27/2008, -1/+25they could make the day less sad if ballmer left too.
- rudy23, on 06/27/2008, -2/+25Thats why you dont have that job

This was my favorite pic - leamanc, on 06/27/2008, -6/+25It really isn't fair or useful to make comparisons like that. Neither man would have accomplished what they did without the other. Sure, MS stole a lot of ideas from Apple, but Apple has done its fair share of pilfering from the better concepts in Windows. And Apple would have never survived if it weren't for many commitments from MS over the years to produce software for the Apple II, the original Mac, and now OS X.
Don't forget that Apple IIs shipped with a Microsoft version of DOS for a long time (until Apple started shipping ProDOS), and the Mac platform very well could have died in '98 if MS hadn't made a big investment in Apple and committed to continue making Office for Mac. - ricky125, on 06/27/2008, -3/+23Gates > Kinnkster
- Nemisys, on 06/27/2008, -11/+28True dat... there are a lot of haters out there that talk ***** here (digg) because he is Microsoft, nevermind the fact that digg and quite possibly the rest of the internet would have never developed as widely as it has, had it not been for this one man.
- wonderbriefs, on 06/27/2008, -3/+18Don't know why you got dugg down for that. People could argue that the internet was around before Microsoft, which is partially true. But you can't deny that Microsoft had everything to do with making desktop computing commonplace. Of course there were others doing it, like Apple and IBM. But Microsoft was what forced others to be competitive. Microsoft was the most successful. I'm not saying that Microsoft is perfect, there are LOADS of things wrong with the company and their products, but from a business stand-point, they've had the most influence.
- rootsm3, on 06/27/2008, -4/+18I'd be crying my eyes out if I didn't have that job anymore.
- TimTheSloth, on 06/27/2008, -0/+13He will make history...
am I doing this right? - revjustin2, on 06/27/2008, -0/+13book
- aimhelix, on 06/27/2008, -5/+17Job well done Bill. You have my applause... now go spend your money ANY way you want to. You deserve it.
- HoratioHellpop, on 06/27/2008, -0/+12Or Steve Jobs, because 1.) he'd order Samuel Adams' Utopias, 2.) he'd make me pay for it, 3.) he'd tell everyone in the bar how lucky I was because he was having a beer with me.
- breadfred, on 06/27/2008, -3/+15No. Simply not true. gates was the one who brought computers to the billions. Apple is good as a competitor, but computers on every desktop? Gates achieved it. Hat off to him.
- TaintBrush, on 06/27/2008, -2/+14Ballmer almost quit Microsoft? That woulda been nice.
Here's to Bill Gates, he's done (and continues to do) some great work for great things. - smashingmonkey, on 06/27/2008, -3/+15I'd be crying too if I knew my baby was going to be in the hands of this man...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvsboPUjrGc
Seriously though, I wish him a happy future. - duffy89, on 06/27/2008, -3/+15According to news, he's left microsoft about 20 times now
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -3/+14RIP? He's not dying.
- FredFredrickson, on 06/27/2008, -4/+14I don't feel like people think Bill Gates is an *****... I think the hate is mostly on Microsoft. Gates himself seems like a decent guy to me - I'd much rather have a beer with him than either of the two political candidates.
- GuyHersh, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9Just to clear things up, MS didn't make the flying toasters screen saver, it actually was made by Berkeley Systems, and was originally for Macintosh. It was later adapted over to Windows.
- gn0stik, on 06/27/2008, -1/+9Now he's history.
- Stonekeeper, on 06/27/2008, -2/+10is that some sort of joke?
- rswelling, on 06/27/2008, -0/+7Even as an avid (FCP actually) Apple user I can still see the amazing achievements of this man to our field of computing, and the modern world. Job well done Bill...As a web designer I also thank you for all the hours spent fixing broken sites in IE...it has added some job security to my field.
- SoIcanDigg, on 06/27/2008, -5/+12Farewell Bill and thank you for the flying toasters!!
- appleseed1234, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6He had been making history...
- Enron, on 06/27/2008, -0/+6After Dark was awesome. I spent hours playing with all those screen savers.
- BitKid, on 06/27/2008, -3/+9Microsoft r0x ya feel me :p
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44784000/jpg ... - FutureGuy, on 06/27/2008, -1/+7"This is what Bill said to me. 'You don't get it. You don't get it. We are going to put a computer on every desk and in every home,'" said Ballmer.
Something makes me he acomplished his dream, he is the first on to think that was possible and work on it, he must be a very content man today. I adore his competitive spirit, ambition and humility. He is a great man, I am both happy and sad today. - Frazzlet, on 06/27/2008, -12/+18Microsoft has a bad rep, Gates himself doesn't really.
- EASwanson, on 06/27/2008, -9/+15People always bash MS but where would computing be today without MS? Yea think about that...
- cawpin, on 06/27/2008, -5/+11He didn't do anything illegal. Being an ***** (which he isn't) or a shrewd businessman is not illegal.
- Mercedes383, on 06/27/2008, -2/+7I think you're having a little bit of a hard time comprehending what Yuppie means.
- Zounas, on 06/27/2008, -0/+5He has been making history...
