- LeviTheSmith, on 08/19/2008, -6/+79I have a computer
- inactive, on 08/18/2008, -40/+108I downgraded after giving Vista a 3 month chance.
- m6ack, on 08/19/2008, -21/+78The important quote for me...
"Even when stripping Vista down to core components to make it as close in functionality to XP as possible, Vista was 40% slower"
Microsoft -- take notice: NO GAMER WILL "JUST DEAL WITH IT" -- and "games" is the chief reason to stay with MS over Linux. All else can be easily ported. - ohplease, on 08/19/2008, -8/+50
As fun as it is to hate on Vista, this title is a little misleading.
In a corporate environment you don't want a heterogenous mix of operating systems. If your existing infrastructure is made up of XP machines then you do not want to buy or deploy Vista on your new systems. You would deploy Vista as part of a corporate wide initiative. A rollout.
This exact same thing has been happening since NT 4. Older OS's being installed or pre-installed even when newer ones are available until the corporation buying the systems is ready to upgrade across the board.
This has nothing at all to do with Vista. - inactive, on 08/18/2008, -21/+57That doesn't come as a surprise to me, considering the reputation of Vista and the whole XP vs Vista debate. I didn't switch to Vista. Why? Because I've been using XP for years and I'm enjoying it. Don't fix what isn't broken. I don't really feel like spending cash on Vista either...
- 2Deluxe, on 08/19/2008, -11/+43Feh, Personally I love Vista and vastly prefer it over XP. Then again, I understand the issues with large networks and I'm a simple single business and graphic artist - so maybe that's why.
Each to their own :-] - blankmedia, on 08/19/2008, -30/+59Vista sucks only when your computer sucks
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -23/+52I've got Vista and it works just fine for me. When transitioning from XP to Vista it didn't take but a couple days to get used to it.
- afx1, on 08/19/2008, -2/+29***** vista, i'm waiting for this new one called mojave. i hear it's freakin sweet!!
- Gumboot, on 08/19/2008, -11/+38What they don't mention is that with 2GB of RAM, Vista performed the same as XP.
http://exo-blog.blogspot.com/2007/11/windows-xp-sp ... - 80hd, on 08/19/2008, -6/+32But vista has been around for some time and XP only seems more attractive to many users.
It's not so much like XP's start where glitches and incompatibility were the issues. It's the bloat, organizational issues and lack of incentive that are making me hold back.
There is simply nothing in my daily computer use where Vista is a better tool. Everything that I require of Windows is in both systems but Vista is just too much overhead. Less is more - SirZRX, on 08/19/2008, -3/+29I think im doing something wrong, i installed vista in my computer windows update popped and asked me to install new drivers it installed everything even the printer, vista haven't crash once and it isn't slow at all, im not a fan boy im just telling my case.
- CarzorStelatis, on 08/19/2008, -5/+25Wrong. A third of _enterprise_ PCs being downgraded to XP. Buried as inaccurate.
- jjb123, on 08/19/2008, -0/+20Games. If I didn't game I would use Ubuntu on all of my computers. I know I can use wine, but its just too glitchy and doesn't play many games I play.
- andypop481, on 08/19/2008, -9/+29I can understand why some people with older computers would want to stay with XP, but what I don't understand is why people rage about vista being a resource hog. Realize: companies like microsoft can't put out new software that goes backwards (or even stays the same as its 7 year old predecessor) in system requirements and still add new features. I'm real sorry your 512 RAM 1.0 Ghz machine can't run vista, but it's a modern OS and runs fine on any decent modern computer.
- Dumbledorito, on 08/19/2008, -5/+25Got Vista with a new machine. I turned off "aero" or whatever it's called because I'm not into eye candy so much, and it works just fine for me. To each their own.
- Tcasey0478, on 08/19/2008, -9/+28I went with Vista when I built my new computer, and have had no problems with it. I would say that it's a mistake for PC builders to NOT give this a try. If you're buying brand new hardware then there won't be any problems anyway.
- silverzone, on 08/19/2008, -4/+23All the comments of Vista stories are rediculous. I've been using Vista for more than a year now, and it would be hard to go back to XP. Vista is good in it's own right. People need to stop knocking it without using it.
- BXRWXR, on 08/19/2008, -6/+25I like turtles.
- cquinnd, on 08/19/2008, -17/+34Vista fixed a lot of what was broken in XP, but it came at a point when most users had learned to live with the breaks.
Don't go by reputation alone, a lot of the initial bashing was undeserved and based on inaccurate info. - elnerdo, on 08/19/2008, -5/+22I'll be honest. I was really skeptical of Vista at first, and yeah, I turned off a lot of features (Aero, UAC...), but after the 30-minutes of configuration that it took to do that, I really don't have any problems with Vista. I think most of the complaining is simply because it's popular to complain about Vista.
- 80hd, on 08/19/2008, -13/+30about the same here..
It really seemed like an upgrade to me though. More speed, fewer nag screens, stuff is organized neatly etc....
Ditching the eye candy is worth it - cliffzdude, on 08/19/2008, -4/+20The fact is most of the PCs they speak of are enterprise boxes, and most enterprises don't move to a new OS because Microsoft released a new OS. Sure the move will happen, but its a big deal for an Enterprise- and most ALL pcs end up on the new OS, new and old.
So, existing customers order said PCs and check the "install XP" option. No big deal really.
But here on Digg you'll see:
"Vista sucks"
"I installed Vista and its quite nice"
"Linux will fix it all"
Its become oddly predictable, with nobody paying attention to the article. - NinjaBull, on 08/19/2008, -5/+21I personally like Vista way better then XP, also.
- franciscofelipe, on 08/19/2008, -2/+18awesome
- alishagg, on 08/19/2008, -3/+17I haven't had a problem with Vista on both my desktop and laptop (both running Aero). Vista seems to load faster than XP ever did and stays up longer without feeling slow. XP always slowed down after a few days of being up and would need a restart just to feel fast again.
Vista also has some better features that XP doesn't have, features that I couldn't imagine not having now. I'm sure there are plenty of programs that will add some of the same features to XP, but do I really want to slow the system down even more when I could just have it built-in?
Vista isn't slow, it's your hardware. - EtherGnat, on 08/19/2008, -0/+12Exactly. I have no problem believing that 1/3 of all *corporate* PCs being purchased end up being run with Windows XP. This shouldn't be surprising at all.
I'm sure it's a small fraction of that amount for consumer PCs, though (vocal minority on tech sites aside). - m6ack, on 08/19/2008, -17/+28I disagree -- I cannot TELL YOU how much I dissagree. Since when is a 40% performance penalty NOT windows Vista's fault?!!! When you run Vista at any level, your computer becomes immediately 40% less efficient than XP. And you get what in return?
Security? Ha Ha -- script kiddies have already found a way around that one.
DRM? Yeah, like I really need more DRM in my life.
DirectX 10? So why can't I have that in XP again?
Eye Candy Sweetness? If I have to pay a 40% perf penalty on my apps -- PPHHHTHHHH!
I've had enough. Dual boot XP and Linux. XP for games and apps that aren't ported -- and Linux for work, multi-lingual (my wife is Chinese) multi-user awesomeness, REAL security, upgrade-ability, cost, and definite efficiency/speed advantage. - HoratioHellpop, on 08/19/2008, -11/+22Funny, I'm a hardcore gamer, and I use Vista Ultimate without issue. Half-Life 2, Bioshock, CoD4 ... all run noticeably faster in Vista than in my XP install. YMMV.
- m6ack, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10Curious -- seeking data...
1) What is your Hardware?
2) What is your FPS on XP SP3 versus Vista? - HoratioHellpop, on 08/19/2008, -1/+11@ppktechno: Remember ... most diggers were in 3rd grade when XP came out ...
- nicko68, on 08/19/2008, -3/+12I was VERY anti-Vista before I actually used it. I listened to all the complaints, got upset about hearing how full of DRM it is, etc. Then I used it on my mom's new PC and ended up liking it.
I just got a new system, Dual Core, 2GB RAM, and Vista runs very snappily, even with Aero, which I like. As long as it doesn't bog down your system, there's nothing wrong with a little eye candy.
Aesthetics are a big part of what Apple is about. - doshindude, on 08/19/2008, -12/+21*also in before Vista fanboy bury brigade*
Oh God here come the "Vista isn't that bad you haven't tried it it isn't as bad as everyone says you never gave it a chance omg" whiners. - HoratioHellpop, on 08/19/2008, -5/+14@seltaeb4: Someday when you graduate high school, you'll understand how businesses work.
- setrajonas, on 08/19/2008, -1/+9This is a long-offered argument that has been debunked many times over and over again. Vista pre-caches programs into your RAM based on your habitual usage, so they load faster when you start them. If you end up using something else that needs that memory, it automatically releases it. It's not bloat. Even then, if you dislike it so much, you can turn it off.
- andypop481, on 08/19/2008, -3/+11are you new?
- darkphenox, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8well just running here for about 5 minutes with firefox open and msn running with utorrent and daemon tools light running it goes up to about 5% with 44% ram taken up but thats with having 5 webpages loaded and 3 conversations sitting there and downloading off of bittorrent
- TheMachine1, on 08/19/2008, -4/+12I was going to try to make a repair/system backup DVD on my Vista basic system and I realized that application does not come with the basic edition. Your limited to saving your user data only. So I figure when Vista crashes unrecoverable my Vista testing will end.
- nicko68, on 08/19/2008, -2/+10My cat's breath smells like cat food.
- Nubli, on 08/19/2008, -1/+9Then maybe you just suck.
- matthewf01, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8Stop all the downloadin'!
- seventhc, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8Bill Gates is not God you *****.
- ohplease, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8
Fire your IT management - cheeze_ballz, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9you like turtles too, i suppose.
- daok, on 08/19/2008, -4/+11It work fine for me too... by the way, it almost work fine for everybody who really use it... people who are bashing never used it or use it with a bad first impression.
- briLo, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8Definitely not normal. Sounds like possible registry problems or you may have ***** ton of gobbledeegoop on your box! at this point, hose it and start it from scratch, but stay away from Limewire and Kazaa this time.
- championchap, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8I have to say, i really dont mind Vista TOO much.
The only thing that bugs me is that it feels like it's babying me along..
Anyone else tryed installing Apache Server on it only to find out that you cant edit the config file?
That drove me mad.. i wasnt allowed to save over anything in the Program Files unless i opened it with Notepad open in Administrator mode.. and that's intuative?!
Oh, actually.. it does feel bogged down too. My 2GB of RAM was more than enough on XP.. on Vista it feels like im on 512 again. - Van3ck, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8Have you ever been a part of an IT group? Ever done any mass updating? Programmed an app aimed at hundreds of people? Kept several hundred pc's/servers/hubs/switches/networks up and running? Didn't think so.
- Niubai, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9The question is: do you need Vista ? I still can do my work with XP. I can play games, watch movies and surf the internet. Why should I switch to vista ? Microsoft will have Vista users when they give a reason, a solid reason for the upgrade. Until that happen, my team is winning and I do not see a reason to change it.
