- casspa, on 10/09/2008, -0/+29Opera Mini is the truth
- pcx99, on 10/09/2008, -1/+18Pretty weak list actually.
Opera Mini is nice but there should have at least been a mention of skyfire ( http://www.skyfire.com/ ) which supports flash. And I really don't know how you can make a list like this without mentioning WMWIFI Router ( http://global.wmwifirouter.com/features/ ) which is like a major killer app. - hugehead83, on 10/09/2008, -1/+15Agile Messenger is great, but not worth the money. Get Palringo for free.
Don't forget Google Maps Mobile! - Firax, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8Windows Mobile has great potential, however has still issues with speed/smoothness.
Apart from that I'd recommend the following freeware:
Opera Mini
Google Maps
TCPMP
Fring
vTap
Skype - emazur, on 10/09/2008, -0/+8Overclocking utilities are extremely useful as well. My tmobile mda runs at 200 mhz and can play aac/m4a files (which compress decently at MUCH lower bitrates than mp3, which is good for memory cards), but if I try to play these cpu intensive files over bluetooth on this cpu, the overhead is too much and playback is choppy. If you have an OMAP cpu, you can overclock using a free utility called omapclock for smooth playback (in my case 252 mhz is stable).
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7These are by far the most useful comments I have ever seen on Digg. I found 4 new awesome programs that fill a need I had on my Tilt.
I will add one of my own, though its more than a program. Slingplayer is awesome on a Tilt, you can watch your own Tivo from anywhere. It requires having a Slingbox at your house, but its so worth it if you like to watch TV on the go. - aston127, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6opera mobile is worth a mention, also. it might be worth paying for - or at least, ahem, acquiring.
- mojoel, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5Coreplayer is great compared to Windows Media Player that came with my smartphone.
- kcornwell, on 10/09/2008, -1/+6Thank you for this article. Not enough attention on the Mobile platform. There is some good stuff here if you are a .NET developer.
- kierskoe, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5I have Dell Axim, one I got free from work.... and I cant stand it. I had great plans for it, purchasing a wireless SD adaptor and 16GB CF card... but windows mobile is horrible. Its nice to see a list like this, I wish I could put this thing to use... get ssh, a decent ebook reader, a good mp3 application, a good mutlimedia player with codec support (I will use core), IM and maybe some emulator support.... everytime I pick it up I just get that frustrated feeling though.
I wish a decent linux distro came out with specific intentions to cater the UMPC market. - CalcProgrammer1, on 10/09/2008, -1/+5My Axim X50v is awesome. I found some great apps. These are my favorites:
-X50v LennySh WM6.1 ROM (edited to 0MB Pagepool)
-Total Commander CE (LAN, FTP, local file browser/manager, registry editor)
-GSPlayer (MP3/OGG/WMA/MP4/Internet Radio player with tons of effects and enhancements)
-TCPMP (Video player, with plugins does YouTube [FLV] and a whole bunch of other stuff, NOT COREPLAYER!!! this is free!)
-Minimo 0.2 (Web browser, renders pages nicely and supports JavaScript, crashes on some pages, eats RAM)
-Opera Mobile 8.65 (Web browser, renders pages nicely, good scrolling, pretty fast, stable)
-Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta (Web browser, iPhone-like finger scrolling, good rendering, smooth, fast, stable, but some issues due to beta)
-Google Maps for WM
-AIM for WM (Not the greatest, but I'm still looking for a good IM program for my PDA)
-RealVGA (for VGA devices, resize the text/menu formatting to make stuff smaller and increase screen area)
-XnView Pocket (Picture viewer, resizer, screen capture)
-PocketXpdf (good PDF viewer with finger scrolling)
-RC Mod (change WM6/6.1 taskbar colors)
-X50Mix (X50/51 series only, controls hardware EQ)
-SRS WOW HD (awesome sound enhancement for pocket PC)
-Happy Tapping Keyboard (found it as "iPhone Style Keyboard" and it has an iPhone skin, good for finger typing)
The worst part about WM is Pocket IE, it's horrible. If you're still using that idiotic pile of worthless junk, get Opera Mobile, Minimo, or (soon) Firefox Mobile. - Snakedal337, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4Mobile 9.5 rocks. I cant wait for it to come out of beta.
- Phoenixheart, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4"Using UPX4PPC can enhance the performance of your Windows Mobile in case you have a number of Programs installed. Also it helps you save a lot of space on your Windows Mobile."
Only the latter is correct. I've never heard of a PE compressor that can enhance an application's performance. Security and space, yes. - PabloIV, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4I want an app that will unlock how much of the internal memory goes to storage and how much goes to running programs. I used to have a slider in the older windows CE versions which was damn useful. I store practically everything on my memory card why can't I assign more to programs!?!?
- takamichinaku, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3You can get Agile Free at some of the sites like freewareppc.com
I am definitely going to try Palringo and Google Maps. - silkysaul, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3HTC-S620??
I clock mine the same speeds too =) - LastDitchHero, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3PointUI was not listed, that is a nice skin/shell that is very functional.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3Is it an X50v/X51v? Upgrade it to WM6.1 via LennySh's unofficial upgrade. WM6.1 runs great on my Axim X50v, so well that I often use it as a laptop replacement (all I usually do on laptop is browse the Internet and listen to music, I use GSPlayer for music and Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta for Internet). Use TCPMP for video (CorePlayer is the commercialized idiot version of TCPMP). I haven't found a good IM app (stuck with AIM's official client, which works but not well).
I've tried running Linux on my X50v but it just has a kernel panic :( I also tried Android but nothing happened, just a blank screen. I guess I'll be sticking with WM6.1, but in my opinion, it's pretty nice (with the 0MB PagePool ROM it has minimal lag).
If you're still on WM2003, there's the problem! Also, I tried the Dell-official WM5 on my X50v and it was even slower than 2k3. The MagLite WM6.0 was OK, but the WM6.1 is the best. - cawpin, on 10/09/2008, -1/+4Yeah, I can't believe I have to push a button to answer.
- hmphargh, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2I've used all of those but PIM backup - never tried it. I would agree that they're all good, but I prefer IM+ to Agile Messenger.
- PhantomRogue, on 10/09/2008, -1/+3For backups, Im a big fan of SPB Backup. They also have a lot of other nifty app's to make your phone easier to use. ( http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/?en ) Also, I use Mobile Shell on my Sprint Touch, works very well.
- Crucible1001, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Even pocketsnes does not go at full speed for all SNES games. I'd have to say somewhere around 60% work perfectly. What sucks are the controls. Certain games are unplayable without a controller.
I have the PS1 emulator and FF7 on my pda, works okay. - tubaros, on 10/09/2008, -2/+4I know where you're coming from.
- Crucible1001, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Really, I did not know 6.1 was out. I've been using 6.0 for months now. Guess it is time to fish out my upgrade SD card.
LennySh 6.1 will upgrade from MagLite 6.0 just fine? - sw1ft, on 10/09/2008, -2/+4Skyfire > Opera Mini
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Lol, they're unofficial releases, none of them are ever going to be official. I think the 6.1 release (what I'm using now) runs better than 6, I used 6 for about a year and saw a significant improvement going to 6.1.
- cawpin, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Just use Slick. It is far better than the other two.
- klowngoblin, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2well stupid people shouldnt use smartphones/pda phones, if you had a tilt and wanted it to run fast, you flash it with hyperdragon 3. if you want lots of programs you flash it with Dutty
the only reason why the tilt sucks out of the box is because ATT put their own customized garbage windows on it. you are dealing with ATT crap, not WM6.
but, forget everything i said, just drop your phone and go to an iphone because your simply too dumb to use windows.
windows is for customization and hacking, not isheep - coyote1284, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2and the way?
and the light? - CLShortFuse, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2You're an idiot. It was the original coders of TCPMP who decided to stop developing for free and to start charging for it.
- kierskoe, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2@calc
Wow, cheers man.. really appreciate the tips, I like the sound of that... yeah its the X50v. I'll have a go at it over the wkend.
nice one! - Blandyman, on 10/09/2008, -1/+3hewball:
Most phones have a little bit of a delay when the call first comes in.
In actuality, I've never seen a phone that doesn't. - sgvprelude, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2watching porn
- Blandyman, on 10/09/2008, -1/+3That doesn't make sense. If it compresses the file it has to decompress it before reading it, which means it's now performing an extra function, so it should obviously go slower...
- briLo, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Right, there also not douche bags either.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I had WM6.0 MagLite on mine, upgraded just fine to 6.1. 6.1 is awesome, though some say it disables the IrDA interface (never use mine anyways) though I was able to "see" my laptop with it so maybe it works fine. As for the boring theme (no gradient on the title bar in the screenshots) that's only the default theme, other themes look just like WM6.
- mrswirl, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2They forgot Smartskey - http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-smart ...
Let's you use the soft keys and the volume control slider on HTC phones (such as the wizard - aka: TMobile MDA) for other functions such as hold right soft key to close application and hold left soft key to access the start menu. The volume slide becomes a page scroller, etc...
It almost makes WM easy to use....almost. - bombayterror, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2one of my favorite ones is Send-Contact (www.send-contact.com) it lets you send a contact from your contacts list to someone else in form of a text message. it will send everything from full name, to address, email, numbers etc
very handy, esp. since sprint has disabled this functionality on its windows mobile phones
and finally
Touch Pal Pro. (i think this one's paid tho, but its on torrents) on screen keyboard. takes 2-3 days to get used to. but it;s waaaay better then the touch screen keyboards that the HTC phones comes with. give it a try, its very user friendly. - CLShortFuse, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Wow, most of these apps have been surpassed in terms of speed, quality and battery efficiency
TCPMP - CorePlayer
Opera Mini - Opera Mobile 9.5
Agile Instant Messenger - IM+
Stick with forum.xda-developers.com recommendations
My personal must haves (on Kaiser / Tytn II / AT&T Tilt)
CorePlayer
Opera Mobile 9.5 + Flash 3.1 or simply SkyFire
IM+
Manilla2D
QuickMenu
Google Maps
TotalCommander (though Resco's is better but not free) - kierskoe, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1Turns out its an Axim x51 (not v) I have in my hands.... looks like the latest rom available is the WM5_A12 .... unless someone knows something different?
- Ryosen, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1DotFred, the guy that makes the PIM Backup mentioned in the article, also makes a very comprehensive task manager app. I've been using it for six months now and it's incredible. http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm
- EtherGnat, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1"That means if Opera's server goes down, you can say goodbye to your mobile Internet (I see this no different than the universally hated DRM)"
Except Opera Mini is free, and it works quite well in conjunction with other browsers. Hell, I have Opera Mini which I use for daily browsing, then Skyfire and Opera Mobile which I use when features and page accuracy are more important. It works well for me. - vassar, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1mine crashes just when I am about to get off
- Baryn, on 10/09/2008, -1/+2Opera Mobile 9.5 doesn't render pages. It renders OUT OF MEMORY every 20 seconds, and then kicks your balls back to PIE.
- wankelrotary, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Skyfire looks slick, but it's pretty clunky, even when using a wi-fi connection.
- NiyazK, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1nice article.... keep posting btw take some time to checkout Mobile Section i found @ http://techb.net/category/mobiles/
- EtherGnat, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1Because Opera Mini loads faster, displays faster, and uses less memory. Also Opera Mobile 9.5 still has significant bugs
- takamichinaku, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1This is not PC!!
- Crucible1001, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Don't forget Pocketnester, PocketSNES.
- vassar, on 10/10/2008, -0/+1i overclocked mine and it crashed even more than it did out of the box
