To be fair, absolutely nobody said that Windows 7 was a cosmetic upgrade. Everybody knows that it looks almost exactly the same as Vista. The tips are fine and helpful, though - LiquidSpark, on 02/11/2009, -4/+54Good stuff. So far W7's been great.
- musters, on 02/12/2009, -3/+37I'm surprised to say this, but I may actually retire my pirate XP for a legit W7
- pureopium, on 02/12/2009, -3/+31I work at a computer repair shop, and we have been testing the beta version on a demo machine for about 3 weeks now, and simply put.... Microsoft finally got their ***** together.
- dandelot, on 02/12/2009, -4/+27I'm waiting for 7 useful Windows 50 tips.
- digitalpencil, on 02/12/2009, -2/+22When did they say that W7 was just a cosmetic upgrade? all i've heard is buzz, buzz, buzz! and i've got to say, the beta's been pretty good so far.

- archer75, on 02/12/2009, -0/+12Because anyone can download it for free, from microsoft and use it. It's not limited to a select group.
- inactive, on 02/12/2009, -4/+13Enjoyed your overpriced tripe.
- npsken, on 02/12/2009, -3/+12I actually know people that are saying Windows 7 is nothing but Windows Vista with lipstick.
- anonymousmedic, on 02/12/2009, -1/+10This may be the greatest thing since Windows 95.

- mrBitch, on 02/12/2009, -0/+7@ pureopium RE: "Microsoft finally got their ***** together."
Completely agree, Windows 7 is a serious OS release which not only includes some NEW (and useful) UI enhancements, it actually includes stuff Windows has been missing for years :
FTA :
" 2. Burn images
Windows 7 finally introduces a feature that other operating systems have had for years - the ability to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. And it couldn't be much easier to use. Just double-click the ISO image, choose the drive with the blank disc, click Burn and watch as your disc is created." - inactive, on 02/12/2009, -2/+9Never used Office?
- Claverhouse, on 02/12/2009, -4/+11Can it surpass Windows ME ? Doubtful.
- Scalpels, on 02/12/2009, -1/+8Microsoft Bob?

- 2of8, on 02/12/2009, -0/+6Flight Simulator. Age of Empires.
- shakajumbo, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5STONE HIM!!!
- FelixDrylock, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5It is great, but it IS very close to being finished. All they have left to do is fix any minor bugs that might come up during the beta tests. What you're using now will be pretty much the same exact thing as the final release, with the addition of 1 or 2 small features MS didn't include in the beta release.
- veilrap, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5A bugfix IS a tip... Especially for a beta.
- JanK1, on 02/12/2009, -4/+9I have a very strong feeling that Windows 7 is going to perform superbly once it's all finished.
- wondertwins, on 02/12/2009, -1/+6you think he's joking but other people said its WAY better than Vista. I havent downloaded W7 yet but ill def get this when its released.
- jestrella, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5if you want to use the feature desperately, you will find out how to use this
- veilrap, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5If your 64 Vista hasn't been usable you're doing something seriously wrong.
- rakeshishere, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4But world is going to end in 2012
- JudgeMonkey, on 02/12/2009, -0/+4Because I haven't been attacked by any linux users if I even imply it isn't the best thing since they discovered air.
- mmmnoodles, on 02/12/2009, -2/+6hm... Use a (probably) pirated copy of XP,
ooooorrr..
Get a free download and CD key LEGIT from Microsoft.
I'm gonna go with free and legit, thanks.
Have fun with your 8 year old OS. - bearcat8543, on 02/12/2009, -5/+9douche bags like you are the exact reason why macs will never get the respect and market penetration that it should. have fun getting passed by linux in a few years.
- veilrap, on 02/12/2009, -1/+4Windows 7 is 64-bit.
64-bit isn't necessarily faster nor more secure. - ilikechaitea, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3How is it just a cosmetic upgrade if it peforms significantly better. They've obviously done a lot of rework at in the core code which makes it very different from Vista.
Power managment is much better. I've got a dying battery which only chargers to 47% of its capacity....it now lasts twice as long under 7 than it did on Vista.
7 also requires less RAM, and is overall a less heavy OS.
The fact that 7 has had "bloat ware" removed doens't have anything to do with its peformance increase. From a technical stand point the only effect removing "boat ware" has is leave more hard disk space. But to the general public who don't understand how software works, they think the OS is now faster because of it.
7 is less resource intentisive, but that because of low level architectural changes, which is actually quite impressive - justjoehere, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3#11 Set the time zone, via scripts.... Seriously that is seriously useful?
- veilrap, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Resource Monitor is built into Vista, although the Windows 7 version is expanded upon.
- benitojuarez, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3thats just ignorant, they have better keyloggers that can upload to an ftp via schedule, stop being stupid.
- ArcadeJunkies, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Windows 7 rocks! These tips make it even better.
If you want to make Windows 7 better, send feedback! I have sent several ideas to them already.
Some points:
A Hot Corners like OSX would be nice, though TopDesk does this.
Defrag doesn't show enough details.
When moving files, you should have a Pause button to pause moving the files.
When you add a folder to the HomeGroup, you don't seem to have the option to include subfolders.
I forget the rest I sent them. They should have a way to see the feedback you sent :) - 2of8, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3Agreed. I've been using it on my desktop machine, and there is barely anything to complain about. (little thing about inconsistency in "personalization" menu, I think I'm the only one who complains about it)
- jestrella, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3I am with you. I've been using it at work and so far it feels like i've been more productive. I am a big fan of the quick launch, bu by having the entire taskbar to pin programs to makes it very easy to transition out of the quick launch usage.
The machine was easy to join to our domain, and the network discovery works like a charm. if you look up computers, at least ones with vista, displays ip address, mac addresss, description, computer name. Small details that are helpful.
switching between windows with the new thumbnail features makes for a clean desktop as well.
Remote desktop is awesome too. Network discovery now allows you to right click and remote into a selected computer. When using full screen mode, you can actually move the top bar to either side just by dragging it, that is helpful when you are remoting into a few machines at the same time.
it boots up really fast. if you are the sole user, you don't need to press ctrl+alt+del since the screen is waiting for you just like when you lock the computer.
give it a try, let us know. - jakem1, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3He should be rewarded for his dedication.
- praisethelard, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3If only it came with the Packard Bell Navigator...
- mashedup, on 02/12/2009, -1/+3You're getting dug down, but you're 100% right on the point you make.
- Renton, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Woah, its a time traveler from 2008.
- FredFredrickson, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I love Windows 7 so far, but I just have to say that I think it's funny how Windows Vista / Windows 7 worked out... it's a lot like New Coca-Cola / Classic Coca-Cola when you think about it.
- DarkShroud, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2It's nice to let people know it's there. Like Vista being able to adjust partition sizes natively without the use of 3rd disk partition tools.
- seltaeb4, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2Only Windows users have to defrag.
- DarkShroud, on 02/13/2009, -0/+2And what about those of us who have PC with Pentium 4s that are strong enough to run Vista & Se7en yet are only x86? There are quite a few of them out there.
- notyourbroom, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2Dugg for:
16. Recover screen space
The new Windows 7 taskbar acts as one big quick launch toolbar that can hold whatever program shortcuts you like (just right-click one and select Pin To Taskbar). And that's fine, except it does consume a little more screen real estate than we'd like. Shrink it to a more manageable size by right-clicking the Start orb, then Properties > Taskbar > Use small icons > OK. -
