Didn't work :( - elnayr, on 04/12/2009, -42/+182Learn the different between a PC and Microsoft Windows.
PC != Microsoft Windows - Colinho22, on 04/12/2009, -5/+86umm i think he is referring to the fact that he has a Personal Computer, but he is not running windows on it, and therefore does not have a registry.
- venom8599, on 04/12/2009, -8/+86Oh, jeez, some of these tips are dumb. For example:
1. And now you can't write to USB drives. Fun. The only people who are going to want to do this are IT departments though, not the average user.
3. Pretty pointless
4. Actually it was sorting it correctly. Version two (v2) of something should go before version fifteen (v15.) Now if it was v1.5 that would be a different story. Also, if I used this tip it would screw with the file listings of all my music files and have tracks 10+ show up between track 1 and 2. - Ramzy, on 04/12/2009, -7/+72Use this:
RD /S /Q C:\Windows\System32
Should purge any file not currently in use and prevent the system from being able to boot without a full system repair.
Note: Using the /Q parameter makes the process silent. It won't ask you if you're sure. - Battlecry, on 04/12/2009, -4/+66Does Linux or do Macs have a registry? I think a windows machine is implied in the title. Not to mention, the description specifically says Windows.
- rnawky, on 04/12/2009, -0/+58@Ramzy: Still nothing :(
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6218/system32.png - jsffive, on 04/12/2009, -14/+60I dugg YOU down for being too stupid to understand the concept of linux.
- Yage2006, on 04/12/2009, -3/+44"Windows' System32 folder can be interesting. But let's be realistic. There's nothing that quite compares to the Registry."
Sometimes when I am suffering from insomnia i look at the registry for about 5-10 minutes then I am board to tears and can barely make it to my bed.
That's how interesting it is. - desuexmachina, on 04/12/2009, -9/+41I am a pedantic nerd and I use Linux!
- rnawky, on 04/12/2009, -2/+34Because IE is a piece of *****.
- jemka, on 04/12/2009, -1/+32I didn't do anything because I'm stupid.
- KaiUno, on 04/12/2009, -18/+49Or games.
- t0ny, on 04/12/2009, -9/+39Weird me too. I check both of my Linux boxes and my Mac and all of them don't have registries.
- D3koy, on 04/12/2009, -1/+31I think you mean Personal C
- DrCyclops, on 04/12/2009, -9/+37It's interesting that you think the article is inaccurate just because it doesn't apply to you.
That would be like a British person burying an article called "10 Senator hacks to make your democracy more awesome!" because his democracy doesn't have Senators. Obviously the information within isn't relevant to his particular needs, but that has no bearing on its accuracy.
So why comment at all?
Except perhaps to be that guy who has to bring up his SUPER SECRET LINUX CLUBHOUSE every time Windows is mentioned. Are you aware that people find you insufferable? You're like a particularly obnoxious Christian fundamentalist who takes every opportunity--no matter how misplaced--to talk about how his One True Faith is the best.
"How was the potato salad, Ted?"
"Not nearly as good as Jesus Christ, my personal Lord and Savior!" - inactive, on 04/12/2009, -0/+26Press alt + f4 for cheat menu!
- jamesmcm, on 04/12/2009, -2/+27The registry is such a crappy idea, it prevents config files from being easily portable and if your registry is borked you won't be able to boot.
Also, some options are set in the registry and some will be in a config file somewhere in Program Files, it's so inconsistent.
I prefer knowing all my config files are in ~/<appname>/config - ultrafez, on 04/12/2009, -1/+24At least you still had time to submit your comment.
- Frostek, on 04/12/2009, -0/+23It's about time they fixed stuff like that.
- ihate2regist, on 04/12/2009, -0/+21try it in safe mode
- Tigerdaz, on 04/12/2009, -2/+22WTF did you expect its a Tech Radar post..... Is all they do is copy other peoples articles and information and then post it as their own spreading a 1 page article over 9 pages to get as much ***** click through revenue as poss and pump adverts.
These clowns and all the others like it are what drag digg down and get DIGG a crap reputation.
Nothing is going to change until how articles are submitted is completely scrapped and a new decent system put in place. - chrislewis, on 04/12/2009, -0/+17Disable autoplay in vista:
Start -> default programs -> change autoplay settings -> take no action. - y0urcl0ne, on 04/12/2009, -5/+22I can run the 0m dash faster than you!
- NexusV2, on 04/12/2009, -0/+17I believe you can turn it off in your preferences.
- dmanmax99, on 04/12/2009, -0/+16sudo del C:\Windows\system32
- shadowmoose, on 04/12/2009, -8/+23Are...... are they retarded?
- Daxx22, on 04/12/2009, -2/+16And Kleenex != all facial tissues, but people still use it to describe them.
- RealJimShady, on 04/12/2009, -0/+14I'm always skeptical of "MAKE YOUR COMPUTER FASTER" guides, because they SOOOO de-tuned the OS out of the box./s The W2K and beyond kernels are largely self tuning anyway.
- Paulish, on 04/12/2009, -10/+22"The only people who are going to want to do this are IT departments though, not the average user."
I work in IT. Did you ever think that the average digg user might be interested in that sort of thing? - Cl1mh4224rd, on 04/12/2009, -1/+12> "I am a pedantic nerd and I use Linux!"
GNU/Linux! - 7aji, on 04/12/2009, -1/+12get a Mac!! It can even run Windows!!!
/s sigh -_- - Meocross, on 04/12/2009, -0/+10Ladies and Gaties we have a winner
- XeroXenith, on 04/12/2009, -1/+11@yacks: I don't think those count as games in the same way that GTA4, Crysis or Fallout 3 do; they're very outdated by modern standards. Precisely why I dual-boot :P
- roijen, on 04/12/2009, -2/+12Some would say that if you are not tinkering then you really are not using.
/I see your pretense and raise you a nerd - Subassy, on 04/12/2009, -0/+10Here's the famous "command prompt here" feature:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Command Prompt Here]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Command Prompt Here\Command]
@="cmd.exe /k pushd %1"
Paste this into notepad and save it with a .REG extension, save and run it.
Course I haven't tried it in Vista yet, but it works great in XP/2k3. I have no idea why it WOULDN'T work in Vista.
Here's the best registry tweaking database ever:
http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/page/list ... - zephc, on 04/12/2009, -1/+11Why not do something useful with the OMGCAPSLOCKKEY? Like, say, map it to 'Control' - you will find this is much more friendly on your wrists if you use the control key a lot.

- waluigi14, on 04/12/2009, -1/+10In my opinion, the Mac's ~/Library/Preferences/ and /Preferences/ system kicks the registry's ass. Separate organized XML files instead of one big ***** of hex crap? Yes, please!
As a side note, in Windows 7, why the ***** do I need to drill down 50 levels in the registry just to change a hard drive's icon? And why can I still not sort folders in list view by size? It obviously can calculate the size of a folder (it displays it in the tooltip), so why can't it do that in the "size" column? - yacks, on 04/12/2009, -0/+8When I hear PC I generally think Politically Correct.
- Myztry, on 04/12/2009, -1/+9PC is a genericized brand name of a series of IBM computers. So, yes - you can have a personal PC.
- venom8599, on 04/12/2009, -0/+8Maybe the average Digg user a few years ago. Not today though. And if you work in IT you should already be aware of this setting as well as it's Group Policy counterpart.
- requiem3, on 04/12/2009, -0/+8boards make me cry too
:'( - Windsurfer619, on 04/12/2009, -0/+8For linux, it depends on what you mean "registry", and what you define as "Linux". Gnome, the desktop environment, has something called gconf that is like the windows registry, but is much more flexible and is actually text-based and not a binary blob.
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -5/+13To be fair, you all have registries "in the computor"..
- MicrosoftBob, on 04/11/2009, -6/+135 and 7 I add any time I've done a new install for myself. I've always had a fondness for verbose mode; guess it's a geek thing.
- MtheoryX, on 04/12/2009, -0/+7When I hear PC I generally think Picard, Captain.
- Ramzy, on 04/12/2009, -1/+8@rnawky
As I said, any file not currently in use will be deleted. You will still get errors about files that are in use.
However once the operation completes, Windows should brick itself upon restart. - sapo916, on 04/12/2009, -6/+13Dugg down for being a needless *****.
