This page says it all. - neasteflorin, on 08/11/2008, -0/+16It's actually a very nice distribution, tried it a while ago, still rolling on Ubuntu.
- brainnovate, on 08/11/2008, -3/+18gOS is nice. Linux on training wheels!
- asskey, on 08/11/2008, -0/+15No more E17?
- grungegbunny, on 08/11/2008, -0/+14Hey I have to support this even if it comes from wally world. Thumbs up to them for giving Linux a chance to be recognized by the general public at a very affordable price.
- erikerikerik, on 08/11/2008, -0/+11Muahahaha finaly I installed this and finaly FINALY my grandfather is willing to give up his win98 for something "new"
its simple and pretty.
dank linux.
oh and I'm seeding this bad boy for while. - RTFishUL, on 08/11/2008, -0/+10hurrrrrr durrrrr this an article for the new version durrrrrrr
- grungegbunny, on 08/11/2008, -1/+9Sad isn't it?
- mrsteveman1, on 08/11/2008, -1/+9I like seeing commercial use of Linux, but there is going to be a serious problem if all these companies preload Wine.
Wine is great, it was necessary for a number of reasons. But the fact remains, if all these large scale Linux users can just say "your windows apps work just fine" to customers, and those customers make up a large percentage, if not the largest portion, of desktop Linux users, then native development is hurt to a degree because there will be less pressure on developers to write real Linux apps. - Phocion55, on 08/11/2008, -0/+7Then I'd question why you're here in the Linux section in the first place.....
- sx66gns, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5I think this is a coming future wave of how easy Linux based OS's can be.
- mordak, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5Which is a hell of a lot less expensive than OSX 10.x and it runs on nearly any laptop older or newer not just super overpriced Apple hardware. Don't get me wrong I love Apple's hardware but with 3 kids and a new house, I'm on a tight budget for a couple more years.
- chiques, on 08/11/2008, -3/+8Love Linux! Mandriva and Ubuntu are my favorite distros. I'll have to check out gOS.
- bullox, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4Keys are your life? Look into getting a new one.
- KingFog, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Zerawbanned RTFA!
First paragraph:
"gOS--a company known for its debut in the US$199 Wal-Mart gPC and Netbooks--announced Wednesday the details of gOS 3 Gadgets, the newest version of its Linux operating system for consumers." - mrsteveman1, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3I imagine they had a reason.....though i can't think of what it might be :D
Maybe they have dreams of using KDE4....someday. - peestandingup, on 08/11/2008, -0/+3Yeah, there needs to be more Linux distros. There's simply not enough of them. :-/
- connieLingus, on 08/11/2008, -1/+4uhh...gadgets kinda suck, to be honest.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2gOS itself won't hurt things, no. But overall it slows development on the platform if things can just run as Windows apps. Then you get to drag a 3rd party implementation of someone elses API with you for years into the future.
At the same time, a much bigger problem is the ignorant refusal of a lot of GNU advocates to even entertain the idea that closed source commercial development is REQUIRED for the platform to succeed. There are a number of areas where things are made intentionally difficult for commercial developers with Linux, which ironically just makes it easier to use Windows apps as-is, which are already closed source a lot of the time. - bullsfan03, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3i tested this out at work--- While a very nice OS, the not being able to edit the dock bothered me a bit.
- devilhorns, on 08/11/2008, -3/+5Sadly, they are not using E17 in this version :(
- Tenoq, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2I was thinking the same thing... and I did. Shame there was no default support for the NIC. I don't mind having to fiddle around for an hour or so getting a webcam working... but when the NIC doesn't work with the default install, then that Linux distro is 100% useless to me.
Looks pretty though. :p - mordak, on 08/11/2008, -2/+4It uses LXDE a light weight version of Gnome with a Avant Window Navagator like bar called wbar on the bottom.
LXDE: http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS7428727466.html
I've been using the new Beta for a couple of weeks and enjoy it imensely so far. - kokoshka, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3Still pissed at gOS for randomly switching focus to myspace apps, glad they've come back to their senses though.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Good point, I don't think it's going to matter. Of course stuff will move to .NET sometime, at which point we will be playing the same game, with DeIcaza supporting some limited subset of the runtime libraries with Mono, and perhaps some other group implementing the stuff Novell can't or won't.
And then you have companies like codeweavers and transgaming, offering to MAKE applications work for a price, with the resulting applications performing poorly and still hurting native development. - redwallhp, on 08/11/2008, -2/+4Yeah, I did a similar comparison in a comment once, putting the exact figures, what goes into the laptops, etc. (Between Macbook and ThinkPad.) Apple's cheaper. It's that you /perceive/ it to be more expensive, not that it really is.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2Wow, That took some time for me to figure out.
Well played. - P373Y, on 08/11/2008, -2/+4if you compare the macbook to a 13.3 inch dell laptop, the mac is like 10 dollars more. so in laptops, you would be incorrect. desktops, on the other hand.
- Gavagai80, on 08/11/2008, -1/+3A huge majority of apps don't work very well in Wine, so you needn't worry about everything working fine.
- booyahbitch, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Reminds me too much of Microsoft BOB...or Packard Bell's implementation of Bob's bastard child...
- macewan, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1anyone produced a VMWare virtual machine copy yet???
- rocky1138, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2I will have to check this out. I run Mandriva at home and at work, but this might be nice on the laptop.
- macewan, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Wondering if these are to ported to straight Linux anytime soon...
- raynevandunem, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Isn't that the fault of the GNU/Linux-centric developers who could one-up the commercial, closed-source and/or Windows-only devs' applications in quality on, say, an Ubuntu or Fedora-exclusive basis?
As rapid and flashy as the rise of gOS as a commercially-viable desktop distro has been within the course of the last year or so, I don't think that the absence of Wine in gOS or some other commercially-viable desktop distro will convince software houses to port the apps natively to "GNU/Linux+whatever DE's preferred widget toolkit" anymore than the inclusion of Wine does. It'll probably make it (far) less viable to Wal-Mart customers.
Instead, gOS's makers should push the OS forward as a viable alternative to Windows and Mac OS X by advertising the benefits that lie with gOS on the desktop that aren't available with Windows or OS X, if any such advantages exist. That, and a little marketing to the teenagers would take distros like gOS pretty far. - RaisedFist, on 08/12/2008, -1/+2LXDE is not GNOME!!! It's been told on digg a thousand times. It uses gtk, but it's not gnome!!
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1LXDE looks nice but when i boot with it the panel app continuously crashes and reloads. Know what i can do about that?
- donna1234, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1OS for consumers

You lost me when you said "suggests AVG". AVG is a POS - its web scanner can't run on the same computer as Firefox 3 without crashing. - Atomic1fire, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1Im not sure, but you might be able to use qemu
- Atomic1fire, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1But then again,
if thats what drives adoption, then that might be whats needed.
and besides, if the developers are porting to wine, and then the actual linux developers are making better software, then more will go with the actual os programs - Atomic1fire, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1I was not completely impressed with Gos (at least the version I used in qemu)
the bling(*shudders at the site of a gold mouse pointer*) theme was a dumb insert, and the actual theme gos2 had the 3 buttons positioned on the other side, with a dot replacing the X, and it was difficult to find compatible themes.
and the other apps might have sounded cool at gos's conception, I think they should have relied on something like prism to make it possible, instead of making shortcuts on firefox which didn't give an apps feel at all.
and on a completely unrelated notice, Digg needs to fix comments, it makes this bouncy movement (that blocks text) if you type too much, and the only way to fix it is post then edit, which causes that timer to activate. - sx66gns, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Digg can't handle the list , something like 14,000 , post your Windblows craplets list and I'll pick out something I've had to fix in a real computer shop with 90% of them , here's the list: http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/allpackages?forma ...
It's funny if the people that fix your car recommend a car manufacturer , the only one they use , you'd probably consider it , But when a computer tech fixes your computer to your satisfaction your less inclined to listen to his sound advice excluding pay for products Like Norton , the ***** at best buy who doesn't know ***** suggest using norton because it's the only one he knows of , Norton boxes fly off the shelf , But say someone like me suggests AVG for your craptastic Emachine your all suspicious , Ignorance and hardheadedness are Linux's enemies , not the quality. - mordak, on 08/12/2008, -2/+2You're splitting hairs. Use it and tell me what it resembles afterward. It's ***** Gnome okay.
- Atomic1fire, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1Plus, it doesnt come with internet explorer by default
reducing the risk that people will have craptastic browsers, because people will probably see that the internet needs to update because it will tell them so - javaroast, on 08/12/2008, -1/+1@p373y and rewallhp
Nice to know apple has a $329 notebook now...NOT. This is designed to run on Netbooks and such. Apple isn't even in that game.
