- trghpy, on 11/07/2007, -2/+39Based on Ubuntu 7.10 Linux system with an Enlightenment E17 interface, the PC's productivity will be almost solely derived from Google applications accessed through Firefox: Mail, Calendar, News, Maps and Documents & Spreadsheets. It also comes with OpenOffice.org 2.2 and some other freeware Linux favorites.

Can someone tell me how this is better than Ubuntu with a few shortcuts?
Most important feature, firefox?
God forbid i want to do something with out internet access. - offput, on 11/05/2007, -2/+34Bono?

I have to say I'm not impressed. 13 out of the 16 shortcuts on the bottom "shelf" are web apps. So, if you don't have an internet connection (or if you are stuck somewhere with slow dialup) you won't get much use out of these.
Left-clicking on the desktop brings up what we traditionally think of as a right-click menu. Right-clicking brings up a shortcut list with the same items as the bottom shelf.
The overall visual impression feels like a wannabe mac, mainly because of the fake launcher at the bottom, and the round glowing buttons on the left of windows.
Just my first impressions. I'll keep playing around with it. It just really doesn't feel ready for the mainstream. Ubuntu feels much more polished and ready for the public than this does. If I bought a computer with this on it, I'd probably replace it with a better distro. - trvr, on 11/04/2007, -0/+9This is the Operating System that is going to be on the new $200 computers at Walmart.
- djauto23, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8Yeah, it'll get rid of all Vista's problems.
- maexus, on 11/06/2007, -0/+8This isn't Google OS, just FYI

- jbus, on 11/06/2007, -3/+10I downloaded and tested this yesterday and it looks like it needs a fair amount of improvement before they put it in the hands of Walmart customers.

I don't think you realize the way the world's moving. There will come a day when you can't disconnect from the Internet. Some say it's already passed. Here's a cup of coffee, have fun! - inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6wake up son

- mova, on 11/03/2007, -1/+4dude, it's not a matter of being "awesome"... it's a matter of an open source project for people.... for free. It's about options and freedom. Listen to Coldkill.
- DevastatorIIC, on 11/03/2007, -1/+4I think Enlightenment will be a pretty (but still light) alternative to Xfce.
- Salviati, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3Are there any scripts to download the just extra features into an existing Ubuntu 7.10 installation? I'd hate to re-install the whole OS just to get a few apps and color scheme.
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Well, it depends how you define "web". Strict ajax type stuff might not, but as AIR and .NET already show, web APIs and desktop APIs can be the same thing. And of course Java applets have been around forever that can do all of the things you mentioned in theory and sometimes even in practice. And browser based solutions like NXclient can be the killer link for any desktop application to be web based if we can get a decent latency internet someday.
Another thing you should consider is, what is the market for most of those needs? About 5-10% of users? I think a product that can work for 90% of the market is fine. - inactive, on 11/06/2007, -3/+6Sarcasm Retards, Do you get it.
- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -1/+4It'd be cool if it was a Google-inspired or -written OS. Anyways, the real direct download is: http://proyectos.pixelamigo.com/software/Ubuntu/gO ...
- inactive, on 11/07/2007, -0/+3abortion ?
- angrykeyboarder, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2Yep.
Add the following line(s) your sources list file.
deb http://packages.googlepc.com/gos painful main
deb-src http://packages.googlepc.com/gos painful main
---
Then...
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt get-install greenos-desktop.
Log out of GNOME (or KDE or whatever).
Then select "Enlightenment" from the display manager and log back in. - angrykeyboarder, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2All it is are licons inking to Google's apps on the web. Nothing special. You can access that from most any OS right now.
- angrykeyboarder, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2It's too bad these PCs are being sold at WalMart. I'd not set foot in WalMart even if they were giving stuff away. I'm not interested in one anyway, but if I were I'd rather buy it elsewhere (e.g. Target).

- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2it gets the only credit it deserves, pretty screen shots.
- angrykeyboarder, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2"abortion"? WTF?
- KibibyteBrain, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2This is Ubuntu, so I guess you are right in saying it would be as bad as Ubuntu. And I have no idea what you last comment is supposed to mean, if anything.
- trenchfever, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2I possibly understood you is a abortion!
- Coldkill, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2Guess what? I don't use Linux! I'm just tired of idiots trolling. "Linux sucks, Linux sucks" If you don't like it then why bother commenting?
- Bicep, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2Totally Awesome!!! The $200 PC has arrived (loaded with the GOS Linux OF COURSE!)
Get it at Walmart http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_ ...
This is totally awesome because for many reasons but especially for these two:
GOS is an icon for GNU/Linux, Free Software, and Open Source - It's a free world (free as in arithmetic and astronomy) and finally normal people everywhere will get to have a piece of it!
$200 for a computer!! - the landscape for selling computer systems will change because of this by lowering the expected cost from $1200 to $200
Hooray!!
So now there's a new task at hand:
We must stop the greedy companies out there from destroying Freedom, GNU/Linux, FOSS Open Technology by changing the software patent system and punishing abusive monopolistic companies.

- KibibyteBrain, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2Not quite right. From wikipedia: "The GPL does not give the licensee unlimited redistribution rights. The right to redistribute is granted only if the distribution is licensed under the terms of the GPL and includes, or unconditionally offers to include at the moment of distribution, the source code."
In short, if you distribute binaries of GPL code publicly, you have to at least answer requests for all the source code. No ifs, ands, or buts. You'd also have to include any changes in that release as well, of course. - annamerikin, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2It's worth it to me if they have a working version of Enlightenment as the present one for Dapper crashes on launch 100 per cent of the time. I'm both a Mepis AND Enlightenment fan....
- inactive, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2Not direct link. Its a torrent Link.
- inactive, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2Thats E for ya, get used to it. E for the linux newbs (ie post 2.0.x lermels) has always been unstable and bloaty as hell, the only usefull purpose it serves is to make pretty desktop screenshots (quickly before it crashes of course) so you can post it on your website/ blog and go LOOK HOW ***** ELEET I AM.
- mekius, on 11/07/2007, -0/+2Is it ok if we put this link on the website or will that bring too much traffic?
- Bicep, on 11/06/2007, -0/+2New link to product: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_ ...
And in case the link doesn't work.. go to walmart.com and search for:
