- gluon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Digg Users: Let's be careful about giving ourselves the reputation of being a flash lynch mob. Every time I read a story here about someone who "might" have done something wrong, I see the Digg vigilantiasm engine fire up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I hope no one thinks I was out of line for writing the followup. I'll rely on the good judgement of the Digg crowd to let me know.
- GuineaPig, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Here's the pattern:
1.) Linux zealot makes baseless outrageous claim about (pick one):
[A] customers clamoring for copies of Linux at McDonald's
[B] their 120-year-old grandmother compiling Gentoo
[C] RMS using his magical flute to lead all of the rats out of NYC
2.) Someone calls BS on this person
3.) Infighting among Linux users ensues
4.) Several new Linux distributions are developed in retaliation
5.) Gates laughs his ass off
There's no news here. - JudgeDredd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"I’m going to change my contacts, web site and forum names. Trilexnet.com has always wanted to buy my web site in total instead of just sharing it. I still have another site I can fall back to, a username nobody knows about. I’ll move to another country and change my actuall name. I’ve always hated my name. I do know poeple in Brazil that would enjoy me around them.
Who am I kidding? They are never going to leave me alone now. I must make some changes."
That is the best part. What the *****? Overreacting a tad?
That and: "Do not post this one on “Digg” please" Uh, don't post stuff on the internet if you don't want people to read it.
And this, kiddies, is a good use of a blog link on digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i can't figure out who's more stupid.
The kid who lied, and got busted.
Or everyone else obsessed with ridiculing the guy. Apparently the guy has some problems or issues. Let it drop and let the person be in peace. He might have lied, but he wasn't hurting a soul..and everyone jumping on this "laugh at him" "make blogs about it" merely to continually and habitually trash him....
should be ashamed of yourselves. - EPeters, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's not self-congratulating, or self-serving. It was an interesting story about a great distro of linux becoming accepted in the mainstream community. However, that aspect of the story should have immediately given it away as a lie. Since this is, in fact, what the story turned out to be, it became just that much more interesting.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8To paraphrase Mark Twain: unless you're an exceptionally talented liar, it's better to tell the truth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think all of this is a lesson. I'm not sure what that lesson is. Be honest? Be considerate? Be fair? One of those or some combination thereof. The original story being a lie, no big deal. His reaction to being discovered? Downright psychotic. Secret agents who commit treason don't act so drastically. Change your name, location, close every web site you own, and wish someone gets beaten up by a mob of angry lesbians, all because some people found out you exaggerated a story about handing out Linux CDs? That's seriously crazy. I don't think they make drugs strong enough to deal with that kind of crazy. If you get caught in a lie, blush a little, apologize, move on.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i agree that this guy should have been exposed for his false claims, but if they hadn't been posted to digg in the first place, then this wouldn't have happened.
that aside, this guy's a douche for lying. but did he really deserve all this in retaliation? i mean, sure it was crappy that he lied, but REALLY. a slap on the proverbial wrist would have been embarrassing enough without (presumably) having this profound effect.
sure he lied and is a total sh*t for it, but isn't enough enough? - Ace25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow, enough about the guy, lets talk about the act, and the repeat that others have already stated in this thread.
How many of you that posted "Yeah, it's cool, I will burn 10 CDs myself and hand out at X". Think about that for a second. You wanna hand out a Linux distro to nameless people where there is an EXTREMELY high probability they will not have a clue what it is. Having dealt in IT Support for 20 years now, and have seen NO sign of the normal "drones" having any desire to actually learn something about the computer they sit at for 8 hours, what do you think a Linux distro would do to these people, or worse yet, the IT staff of the company they work at when they return from lunch with this CD and pop in it their company computer. It could be a CD full of virii, spyware, etc and a large majority wont think twice about popping it in their PC.
Think of all your "Computer" friends before you do something like that, because those are the people who will get a call when these "drones" that have no clue that Windows and Office are actually 2 different products. You have no idea how many THOUSANDS of times I have heard "I have Windows 97 and my Word wont open" or something just as stupid.
If people are tech saavy enough to know about Linux and want to play with it, they should have at least enough brain power to be able to find and download their own distro right? - misterpony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the most interesting thing is the investigative work by diggers which turned this story upside down and allowed the truth to come out. I think it's great that people called the McDonald's to see what the real poop was, but I feel sorry for this smuck for getting lambasted, even though what he did was stupid, we all make mistakes and it's not like he was doing it out of greed or maliciousness.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2BEHOLD, the power of digg!!! It makes a grown man so mad, he quits his 'job'. lol.
- equusdc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"its like getting mad for writing you GF number saying she gives good head on the bathroom wall and get mad cause guys call her to find out."
No, it's like writing that on a bathroom wall of a Montana highschool during a cross-country away game 2500 miles from home only to have someone plaster it on the Goodyear blimp at superbowl halftime, including her phone number, yours, your employer's as well as the postal addresses of all of the above, resulting in you losing your girlfriend and your job only to come home to find an angry mob has tee-peed your house.
That, in a word, sucks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey now. At no point did I really flame this guy. I didn't start this whole thing to get people to my blog. I ran across what sounded like a cool story about some guy promoting Linux and I *thought* that the Digg crowd, or at least the people that like Linux, would appreciate it. I wasn't even anticipating it making to the front page of Digg, much less being a fake story.
All the information that I included in my little followup was publicly available. In fact, the only thing I did that was extra effort on my part was to find the bit about the copyright stuff. I'll take responsibility for posting the original story to Digg, and I'll take responsibility for posting this story because I thought people might like to know how it all turned out. However, its not under my control, nor is it my fault, if certain members of the Digg community harassed this guy or did anything to cause him problems. Finally, if someone says I should be attacked because his lie was found out, I reserve the right to comment in some form or another about it on my website or in another public venue, if I choose.
Thanks to everyone who has had mostly positive and thoughtful comments. - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3hey, maybe we should quit being so bitchy (i know this is my third post, too!) and go out there and HAND OUT THESE CDS TO MCDONALD'S OURSELVES!
how great would that be? if we all just stopped going on about this for now, and went off and each of us burn 10 cds to start and then hand them out at mcdonald's. wouldn't that be the best way to serve the linux community? instead of all this in-fighting?
just a thought... - Bogtha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So let me get this straight: he bitches and moans about being identified, with awful spelling, and then "somebody else" pops up to say "hey you, don't use so-and-so's account in case everybody mistakes him for you", *making exactly the same spelling mistakes as the first person*?
Sounds to me like there's no company, there's no other employees, it's just some kid trying to make people believe that it wasn't him that got caught lying. - equusdc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"To say you're going to move to some new country and change your name because someone called you on a lie you posted on your blog is just childish."
Perhaps he was just being hysterically hyperbolic about it thinking "crap, I did something lame, but they're about to go Numa-Numa on my ass over it." Given some of the responses in this thread, I don't think there's a shrink in the land that would say paranoia wasn't justified...on the otherhand, I think many would consider some of these responses borderline sociopathic. - sintaks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's quite easy to insult someone when we're separated by a computer screen and several hundred miles of space.
Sure, the guy lied. Yes, he freaked out when confronted. What's the point in furthering this informal "investigation", other than to continue the humiliation, solely for our own enjoyment?
I think this is one of the biggest flaws of Digg, or any online community. Yes, we gain valuable insight from amazing articles - we're Kevin's personal Newsbot. With the good comes some bad, however, and I think it's the community's responsibility to merely acknowledge it and move on.
It's NOT our responsibility to post sensitive (albeit, publicly accessible) information for the amusement of others and for personal gratification. You're attacking ONE MAN who made a MISTAKE - one I'm sure he'll not make again. But even if he did, why do you care? Do his actions directly affect your day-to-day life? Was anyone hurt? Even if he did make another mistake, who are you to judge him? Are you so perfect that you can point and ridicule, unafraid that a finger could end up pointing back at you?
In the words of a great hero, Robbie Williams:
Straighten up and fly right. Cool down, Papa, don't you blow your top. - ArchAngel21x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"youre an ***** for posting his personal information"
Hey dumbass, that information was not personal. Domain registration information is public. - rmdl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, you're not very smart.
Posting this just to take a jab at a person causing humiliation like this... you're just setting yourself up for some personal harm.
I'm not joking, either. I'd watch what I post and who you piss off if I were you.
The dude lied. Let it be. You're egging it on by not dropping it and giving it a "eh, who cares" like it deserves, so I hope you're ready for any consequences that may come from this. - Hitchhiker90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Did anyone actually believe the original story? First the kid says he used light scribing cd's which are pretty expensive, then he says the manager was running firefox and open office the next day. Those two alone should have told you the story was BS.
- Anth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is this guy (the one who supposedly handed out CDs) old enough to have a job? He sounds like he is 12, making up elaborate lies and then stomping out of work in a hissy fit. ***** grow up...
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd just like to point out that in the original digg, a few people were sceptical about this person's claims. Many of these people were scored down and scorned as if scepticism were a sin. Some were quoted and labeled as fools. I recall the fellow who called the McDonalds. The comment was followed by someone asking if anyone actually believes someone would go to the effort of calling the McDonalds and labelled them as a liar.
There's no room for false claims like this, especially in the spirit of open source. People were talking about giving this guy donations. Honestly. I don't care what his age is. He deserves what he gets. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I feel bad for the guy.. he's obviously got deeper problems here.
- Visceral, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Haha, wait, he posts a fake story and gets pissed that people view it? Did someone leave the gate to the retard farm open?
- Anchoret, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4> I feel bad for the guy.. he's obviously got deeper problems here.
Remember what I've repeatedly said here?:
"OS advocacy is best understood as a psychiatric symptom"?
I wasn't joking then and I'm not joking now.
I was suspicious of the story to begin with. The part about the manager's brand new notebook digesting an Ubuntu install without a hitch just didn't ring true. I've never -- NEVER -- known that to happen. - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The only thing more pathetic then this poor guy is the poster. Get a life and stop harrasing internet posers. Yes he is acting like a fool but so are you. When was the last time you lied on the internet? Get a website full of angry fact checkers after you and lets see how good you look.
- equusdc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If a site looks rinky-dink, post it as a coral cache. It's just polite. This guy isn't pissed off because you "exposed" him, he's pissed off because you flamed out his servers, aggravated his boss/coworkers who had to jump through all sorts of hoops--and spend money--just to keep the business running and from the sounds of it, they're just scraping by to begin with.
Jerks or not, I definitely do not dig that. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hilarious. I particularly like the "copyright" tantrum.
Anyone want to register Foxlogic.org? Could be a site devoted to fake stories and exaggerated claims on the internet... - djpolstee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice follow up and very well written. I think that it's pretty funny to see how this kid got mad and flew off the handle at "work" or where ever and as such has "terminated development." ah, nicely done.
- hadem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I’ll move to another country and change my actuall name."
HAHAHAHAH! Is this kid serious? Get over it, we found out that your story was fake. I really don't give a crap what this kids name is or where he lives. We are all just having a laugh not saying that you are the worst human to walk this Earth, settle down there buddy.
Oh, and he spelled actual wrong. - nullvector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This here Intarweb ain't for everybody.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The original story was stupid enough.
Linux zealots are pathetic. - Riku67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's safe to say the guy regrets this now, same as you geuis may one day regret posting all this information. Would you like it if someone posted the your personal details from domain registration of thetechgurus.net so that a google search of your real name would bring this thread up?
- DeadPain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice going gncaddict, how old are you again?
- JesterOZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With credit to Merriam-Webster OnLine (http://merriamwebster.com/)
slander: a false and defamatory oral statement about a person
libel: a written or oral defamatory statement or representation that conveys an unjustly unfavorable impression
Good luck suing an internet site (and its members!? HA!) for *slander*.
Apparently Digg has one week, or as soon as possible, to remove that. I think Digg collectively chooses "ASAP" where "as soon as possible" is... hmm... how about never? Yeah, that works. - Polaris75, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ezkiel
LOL! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Am I the only one here that thinks this is stupid. Why in the world was this story on digg in the first place. Who cares? Some of these front page digg stories are getting ridiculous, but I guess the stupid more people are here the more likely it will show up on the front page. oh well digg had a good run.
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with previous poster
lets all go hand out some ubuntu cds at mcy ds maybe just like 10 - yuutomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the reason I followed up with whomever is using that email address, is as a tech since the late 1970's, being honest and admitting mistakes was a motto I grew up on, and if I lied and got caught, I would accept whatever consequences happened. I am disgusted that the kids nowadays are not even able to tell the truth, I lose faith as a tech and as a business owner, when I see things like this happen, I am at the point I can't trust any of the kids nowadays at this rate.
it's a matter of principle, telling the truth sometimes hurts, but it's easier to do than to lied and be caught in a lie. - LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg drama that's great
- KC311Man, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This community has 1 week to remove these topics."
Don't hold your breath on that one retard. - Ghazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fox logic, fox logix, fox logic... Oops, I have 3 lawsuits coming!
- rbnelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't think the first story was newsworthy and I sure as hell don't think the follow up is any better. If anyone should be flamed, it is the tard that didn't recongize it as a bs story to begin with. Something as simple as some guy posting on a forum saying he left some Ubuntu cd's in McDonalds and what not shouldn't even be posted on digg, much less the guy posting a follow up to the story after he realized the first one that he posted wasn't true. Get real news on here, not this *****.
- yuutomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've spoken to one of them or both at the techsonic@charter.net and I'll be glad to provide the email conversations, in which they are showing how ingrained into their life, lying is. they've lied, and made up false statements to the point that supposedly I sent them spam.
- JNitz36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"This post and the previous are to be removed ASAP or Legal action will be taken against Digg.com and it's members for slander.

I can't wait to see the response to this. Sure the digg community jumped all over this whole ordeal, but I still don't see how digg is at fault for any this. Didn't someone admit to lying? I am unclear of this. If a person did lie, isn't the point of lying to get attention? Boy-oh-boy, did it get attention. - oxymoron69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also make sure to tell them how awesome their page about ubuntu and firefox is:
