Yeah, because no ones ever cracked DRM before, right? - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27No, Zune /may/ be able to run Linux, if they're not using the abilities of the Freescale processor to check if the signature of the bootloader is correct. The Freescale iMX31 has a Linux board support package (BSP), but getting that BSP on the Zune and making it work is a completely different story, and it's highly unlikely Microsoft, being the big fan of closed platforms and DRM as they are, made it easy on the community to modify the firmware of their device.
Buried as inaccurate. At least read the damned article before you post a headline like that. - hijinks, on 10/12/2007, -16/+36too bad you can put linux on an ipod already
- bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21The Zune also has a 532MHz processor, as compared to the two 80 MHz processors in the iPod. Between the processor and the wi-fi, it has a lot of possibilities, but will anyone actually do anything with it (or is it even possible)? Who knows...
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23I am not sure if it can run Linux, MS must have thought about that. If their BIOS requires some DRM stuff (encryption keys and so on) then the Linux people are out of luck.
However, a Linux version where you can share songs for real, and perhaps access the Internet and use media from your windows shares would be cool - Phssthpok, on 10/16/2007, -0/+15@radu79
[[If their BIOS requires some DRM stuff (encryption keys and so on) then the Linux people are out of luck.]]
Like the Xbox? - killthemoles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You don't wonder IF it can run linux. You Wonder HOW-TO get it to run linux.
- Avogadro65, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I think he means utilizing Linux to get the most out of the built-in FM radio and WiFi, which no iPods have.
- thehigherlife, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20you can put linux on an iPod. i fail to see your logic.
- Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22You've been able to install Linux on iPod's for the last 5 years.........
- dipiddy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14only good news about the zune so far... haha
- zeiben, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I just got a Zune for my birthday. Forget Linux. Here's how I plan to make my Zune cool:
1. return it for credit
2. buy something else
And I was the biggest cheerleader for that gadget. Such high hopes... Alas - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8FYI, these things typically dont have a "BIOS". The processors typically just load a program from an E/EPROM or flash chip and go.
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Linux, is there anywhere it won't run?
- willcode4beer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Once you have Linux on it, then you install Apache, its a portable webserver (via wifi)
and the obligatory.....
imagine a beowolf cluster of these - gumbright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That is the first thing I have heard about the Zune that awoke any sort of geek desire for one. Not that I would buy one, but at least keep my eyes open for second hand units. (Figure they will be coming any day now...)
- Mohonri, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Man, if it gets cracked wide open, think of the possibilities! You could get all the features you'd normally expect, but with the freedom you want! Things like wireless sharing for unlimited time/playbacks, web browsing, wardriving, DivX, XviD, FM radio recording....heck, I'll bet it could even do some sort of commercial detection/skip on radio recordings!
Think of a PMP with all the wireless features of a laptop. Yummy! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8from the brave soul that voided warrantee:

Also, if they did it right, they will have enabled the built-in security features of the MX31 so you can’t/it is very difficult to hijack the boot–but it is still vulnerable to buffer overruns, etc. as far as I can tell. Haven’t bothered to test it either way, but the High Assurance Boot (HAB) feature is worthy of caution if you are thinking about trying something.

Nevermind, I just figured out which one is the radio tuner. It’s the chip in the upper left hand corner near the WM8978G, labelled 4701A15, for the Silicon Labs Si4701 single-chip radio tuner.
Still wondering about the P003 / 620A5 chips, 4 of them in a row, near the hard drive connector on the left–actually, on the hi-res image they look grey because the part number is illegible due to a lack of contrast from light reflecting off of the package.
For the record, these questions are to satisfy my curiosity. I’m always afraid these days to post tear-downs of high-profile stuff…life was much simpler a few years ago. - Reziarfg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Linux? Big deal, some toasters can run Linux.
- tmanka, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Does it run Linux or does Linux run it?
- mudfly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It is only a matter of time, I probably will buy a zune when someone can get linux to bootstrap off one. Imagine X + wifi + Firefox + bittorrent + coffee shop.
- Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Can you feel the irony? You just concisely said that linux is highly portable and can run on almost any hardware. How is that a bad thing?
Or are you being sarcastic?;) - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes it is exciting but you wouldn't want firefox on that. Opera would be better, it is optimized for such devices.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I started reading your post and thought, "Bummer of a birthday" (not that mine are better) but then you said you'd return it and your birthday sounded much better.
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Depends how efficient the processor is for 532mhz, maybe its faster than the psp's processor as far as efficiency per watt goes. That would be interesting to have a full useful OS on the Zune, since Microsoft's obviously sucks ass with its restrictions and all.
So if someone makes a good linux project for the Zune, I will buy it, otherwise, M$ can suck my Firecock. - PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't think you want to put a WHOLE OS on it, just a Linux kernel to communicate with the hardware and light intuitive interface similar to the iPod project. That is the only way I think the Zune will do well, if it gets cracked. I would buy it in a second if Linux were on it, no share restrictions, Internet surfing... It's a strong enough machine.
- pixelmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4what CAN'T run linux??
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I knew they wanted to call it something different:
Xune
But they knew what happened with the Xbox (If it has an X, it's *nix, http://www.xbox-linux.org/ ) - kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@naio21 I'm sure you were refering to the zune as being good hardware, and the crappy os is the one it ships with.
Seriously, for what reasons would you not want linux on it? - pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Do you think people shoehorn Linux into everything they can just to impress you?
- jedikv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Zinuz?

- SonicRush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's not about just getting linux to run on it. It's the extra functionality that could come with such a development. And if you don't dare, don't post.
- lopla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The Zune is highly versatile. It is also being touted as the "Boat Anchor Killer" because it makes such a great boat anchor.
- darkixion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm sure the Zune can run Linux. It can also kiss my ass and stay on the store shelf rusting for all I care.
- geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Huh? What are you yapping about. If you install linux yes you get additional features. Try web browsing for one, that alone would be really nice. Get a light weight and open source WML browser ( http://linuxdevices.com/articles/AT9202043619.html ) on it and you too can browse the web from a hotspot with a zune. I don't think an HTML browser could fit into that thing, but a WML browser could. Then just return WML pages from your webserver. Gmail offers WML pages, yahoo! mail as well. Even yahoo instant messenger works over WML. Another option is running java on it, but that is probably overkill on the poor zune. The nice thing with WML is it has strict syntax checking (vs anything goes HTML) and is light weight, so CPU and memory footprint for WML browsers is low, plus there are plenty of WML sites out there, created for cell phone WAP access.
- mudfly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1true actually I would be content with links as long as I can get to the interweb with a zune.
- batguano, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This just in:
My left testicle can run Linux! (we have some driver isues with the right one) - SicKn3sS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hopefully someone can get the zune to be used as a packet sniffer and record IV's. That would be the *****, if the wifi on it can even support that.
When someone finds a REAL use for the zune's WIFI connection, I will buy one. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it'd be nice to run linux.
though doesn't running linux on something bought from microsoft seem a little....er.....ugh?. - bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -0/+1ya, can put linux in almost anything electronics. TV, microwave, fridge,..............
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Gah imagine a little kayboard for it, you'd basically have a computer. Honestly, with the wi-fi support, when the linux community gets this running I may get one just as a little computer. Think wardriving and going online basically anywhere.
If Microsoft lets people do this, I guarantee that they will sell a ton more Zunes. - shank2001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not only can the ipod already run linux (and has for years), but it can also play doom!
- klang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so true.. when the RockBox people start on Zune, the wireless module might even be usable.
- SonicRush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A lot of people give a crap, n00b. Linux on the Zune could totally unlock the hardware and let users use wi-fi to it's full extent. It has a lot of potential with the hardware, but right now Zune's software seems to be holding it back.
- Zetal, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1Since it's mostly plastic, I'm going to have to call you out on that one. =P
- Zetal, on 10/30/2008, -0/+1I'd get one if I could put Linux on it. It's all about what you could get out of the player. It's got the potential.
