- ArcticCelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First thing I do after installing XP is:
1 - Change start menu to classic start menu;
2 - Adjust visual effects for best performance (turn all XP visual features off)
3 - Turn appearance of desktop to classic.
In the words of a famous villain, all I can say about this desktop environment is : Noooooooooooooooohhhhhhhh!!!! - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KDE 4 will be ok however because its a clone of OS X

And at least Gaim 2.x doesn't look as bad as MSN Messenger or that other one they're bringing out. The sound server failing and network disconnections are suspicious though, and not normal. About Firefox 1.07... considering how old IE is, is it that hard to wait for FF 1.5 to get into the repository? - tw33k2514, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok look at it this way alot of people dont use linux because they cannot understand the interface . so if we could get all the windows people a nice interface (windows) on linux like in the article then more people will use linux . as it becomes easier for the novice user to understand.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This project is very old, and I think dead in the water. //and was reported as such
I think this project is dead (or at the very least dying) because it has no real target audience - switchers maybe, but both KDE and Gnome are sufficiently intuitive that anybody that's used the Windows start menu should be able to navigate the GUI with a few minutes of getting used to the layout. Any potential switcher incapable of this probably isn't going to switch, anyway - it's not like emulating the Windows desktop makes Linux work like Windows. You still don't have drive letters or .exes - in short, you still have to learn to use Linux. - X_cell_er_8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty Old, Like 2 Years Old!

Would you like to know where the spell-check is, instead? - AbortRetryFail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@manfesto & thecwin
You're both right. There are simple workarounds for all of the problems I mentioned.
I guess I just got sick of hunting down all of the workarounds every time I came up against something. That easyubuntu looks like it could have saved me a hell of a lot of effort (the majority of my Linux experience has been in Kubuntu) but of course I never stumbled across it.
I'm going to really miss Amarok, and virtual desktops, and how snazzy my KDE3.5 desktop looked with a transparent bar and Taskbar2 installed. I'll also miss just typing "sudo apt-get install" to install new software.
But on the other hand, coding in VS2003 without having to run VMWare, tagging MP3s with album art and being able to play games without rebooting will make my life that much easier that it's not really worth persevering with Linux.
Anyway this is all way off-topic. I do apologise. - vertino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm an XP user... and I do exactly what ArcticCelt said by switching everything from XP theme to Windows Classic - I hate that bubble-gum XP look!
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I would never switch to linux because I'm a mac user, but thats a good article for people who want a desktop environment that actually looks half decent on linux
- skwashd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An outdated Kylix based DE? News? wtf?!
- just2digg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Old !
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old... like no development since '04 old!
Digg++ cuz It _could_ help convert people to linux, if they ever release a beta, etc. - txmail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would like to bet that if you took the average joe's desktop and said you were going to upgrade it to the latest version of Windows, but secretly replaced it with a desktop Linux environment that was modeled after windows (I'm not saying this is the best, Meta-city has a better looking theme than this) that about 50% (if not more) of them would not know the difference.
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Using this is probably the only way I could deal with Linux in the long-term.
In the words of Andy Wall, "Linux is only stable because it doesn't support anything." - hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yet to see a decent looking Linux desktop and this is no different
- TarryTops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The point remains ladies that it's easier to switch (*fool*) the zombie clients from XP to Linux!
- Memx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0gatta admit it, the xp interface is very nice. so is the new windows os that is coming out soon windows vista
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hasn't been updated in a while I see. Hope its not dead.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>I would like to bet that if you took the average joe's desktop and said you were going to upgrade it to the >latest version of Windows, but secretly replaced it with a desktop Linux environment that was modeled >after windows (I'm not saying this is the best, Meta-city has a better looking theme than this) that about >50% (if not more) of them would not know the difference.
Except when it wouldn't run any of their software - Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow one of the reasons I switched to linux was for better customization Considering the crappiness of the xp look. While I do duel boot I of course skin windows to look decent though never as good as my ubuntu partition.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eh, it looks okay. I'm sure it can be done a whole lot better.
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"I thought all the Linsux trolls were saying that Lunix was so superior. Why, then, would anyone want a clone of the XP desktop?"
To get people like you to be more comfortable making the switch. But upon further thought I take that back. That would be the equivalent of Ann Coulter turning into Maureen Dowd. Not only would she have to change ideologies, but she'd have to become a woman. - skyshark88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Cool and while I,m typing can anyone tell me about a web sight where I can turn my Porsche 911 into 89 Toyota celica????????????
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think Linux needs to look like Windows to attract windows. I tried Gnome, and its just as easy as Windows. In fact I think its even easier with the way Ubuntu sets up the menus in categories for you. All that junk you see when you click "Start" is more complex. I think a windows user would immediate love the multi desktop thingy too.
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, its basically like all other popularity window managers except without the poor attempts at innovation.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does not work at all.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea for businesses who want to use linux, but dont want to spend $$ on training.
- launchpadtt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still don't understand why they didn't just make a theme for gnome and kde
- dipswitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old.
And besides, they develop it in Kylix for crying out loud. So much for luring FLOSS developers into the project.
A better idea would be to reimplement explorer for GNU using libwine (and ofcourse all the nice libraries like cairo and gstreamer), could be useful for those migrating desktops (in the education, government and corporate sector). - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ok look at it this way alot of people dont use linux because they cannot understand the interface"
Actually I don't think that's true. There are much bigger reasons I can think of...
KDE and Gnome are actually pretty easy to use - I don't use Linux for compatibility reasons. Many of my programs and hardware don't work in Linux. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, I'd prolly start with KDE then if needed go to GNOME, seeing I just like KDE's looks more than GNOME's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Biggest issue with my sister is she uses MSN, Firefox (Flash and shockwave) and iTunes. She has screwed 4 windows installs in the past month up via spyware and they were ***** beyond reasonable repair and I'm sick of it so I plan on using aMSN for its excellent webcam support (her webcam works in linux, same as mine), Flash and Shockwave I dunno anything about in Firefox, and iTunes I know there are other apps that have iPod functions. The hardest few things will be the dreaded wireless card (Altheos driver) and maybe the 3dfx card if she decides maybe she might wanna load some wine up and play HL1 vs me in wine. I hope that I don't have to resort to this DM, but If I get enough complaints from her, I may need to.
- JohnTheLutheran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The horror, the horror...
It would be bad enough if this actually looked like XP. As it is, it looks like one of those half-hearted "Redmond" themes you get in Gnome or KDE.
(As it happens, I actually - whisper it - quite like the theme in XP. Better than the tedious Windows Classic. But I'm not about to inflict a Windows look-and-feel on my Linux box.) - antiwmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0old & dupe.
I hate desktop environments, too much nasty stuff.
WM's are far better - jyoungxxxx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Ok, for all of you ignorant fools out there; people are creating desktops like this to attract windows users to Linux. I can't believe that 1 sentence never crossed any of your idiotic minds! Or... your just downing Linux because you don't like it for whatever your agenda might be; who cares what it might be.
- coldmeat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I installed it...
...and then quickly uninstalled it.
It looks like crap and is just as buggy. I do however agree with the concept. - DietrichM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tested it about 3 years ago, sad if it's still buggy...
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@gu3st
What does she use her computer for? I mean, "relearning" Gnome isn't any harder than Windows XP (straight from my current install of Fedora Core 4):
Surf the Internet: Applications>Internet>Firefox
AIM: Applications>Internet>IM
Word Processing: Applications>Office>OpenOffice.org Writer
Music player: install Amarok, and Applications>Sound and Video>Amarok
Movie player: install mplayer or xine, and they're both under Applications>Sound and Video
I mean, it's all pretty spelled out - just as well (if not more so - by categorizing, you know before you launch an application what it does, if it's internet or sound/video related) than the Windows start menu. - HiddenForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now that it's on digg, they'll probably be getting a nice cease and desist from Redmond in

Oops, yes I am. My bad, sorry. http://www.bb4win.org/news.php
I just wanted to make the point that there are *NIX DEs for Windows. - Guy0510, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please, please use our O/S. We will even make it look like yours. Please!
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Hanthus
Ever heard of blackbox? It's fluxbox for Windows. - comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Doesn't look anything like xp really."
Umm.. Did you even look at the screenshots?! It has multiple similarities between the XP look. Between the background, XP like taskbar, start menu, and My Computer and other buttons, this will make it easier for XP users to transition to Linux.
On the other hand. I hate the look of XP, and liked the look of Linux, so the default look of Linux was one reason for me to switch over :). - boysranch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used XP clone in Linux for a week..but it was such a bad experience that I had to switch back to Xp. I can't work in Linux, like I do it in XP. Windows XP rocks! http://www.silveradoboysranch.com/

- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a Windows 200x "Classic" Environment for a Linux os such as Ubuntu.
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@AbortRetryFail
It's probably because I have some Linux experience behind me, but I had just about all of those issues addressed in the first half hour or so of freshly installing FC4 - I rebuilt the Firefox 1.5.0.1 RPM from source (if you don't want to rebuild it yourself, I'd be more than happy to send it to you - one of my e-mails is in my profile), I've personally had no problems with GAIM's interface or connections, or OO.o reading/writing MS Office formats, and as far as AmaroK goes - yum -y install kdemultimedia-extras installs mp3 support, and if you're having trouble setting up the sound server, use ALSA and enable Dmix (that's something you may have to google to figure out how to set up) and never worry about not being able to have more than one sound producing application again. Oh, and yum -y --enable-repo=atrpms install w32codec allows divx/xvid h.264 etc. playback in MPlayer.
Yes, this is a bit of legwork on my part, but anybody can now use my computer with ease - they click the firefox to surf the next, click the wolf to listen to music, click the AIM-ripoff logo to instant message, click the piece of paper to write a document, etc. (I'm not the only person that ever has to use my computer - if my friends want to check their e-mail while at my place, why make it hard for them? Besides, this makes it easier for me too).
One thing Linux has going for it is a good user base - check out the various forums online if you have any questions, and don't be afraid to ask - civil questions normally get civil responses. - noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks good, but it looks like it might be becoming vaporware.
- energeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the reason i switched to linux, was the AWESOME screenshots of the then mandriva 10 and KDE 3.2 I saw. Why would anyone make linux look like windows. Don't follow the windows philosophy of making users dumb. If they want to use linux, let them modify their outlook(no pun intended) a bit to get up and running. Anyway the Linux GUIs are way better than windows on the usability and eye candy and configurability and look-n-feel stuff. If you ask me even minimal WMs like black/fluxbox are better than windows GUI. Atleast in Linux you don't go to Start to Shutdown
