- kazamx, on 10/16/2007, -1/+132I love this idea behind this laptop. I also really like the idea of the buy one, give one offer. Yes for the stupid they will try to compare the spec of 1 $400 laptop in the US to 1 of these, but to do so would miss the point.
In the US and Europe we compare specs, we compare the things that make a laptop good for us. The OLPC isn't designed for us so to judge it by what we need is wrong. The laptop you currently love would be crap for the people who will use the OLPC, it eats too much power, isn't tough enough, isn't every good in direct sunlight and a dozen other things.
I see the buy one give one as a great opportunity for developers to get their hands on one and start developing even more software to help these kids out. In the UK many of our current computer coders started on the Spectrum or Atari or the commadore 64. I see the OLPC as being as important to these kids as those were to kids in the past. - albiniak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+94"And sure enough, the bloggers and the ignorant have already begun to spit on the XO laptop. “Dude, for $400, I can buy a real Windows laptop,” they say.
Clearly, the XO’s mission has sailed over these people’s heads like a 747." - TheTaoOfBill, on 10/16/2007, -17/+79Pedophiles everywhere rejoice!
- EvanVolm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+61Kid magnet? That's......odd....
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -4/+53Can it last an entire day on one battery charge? Will it work in a sandstorm? Usable in bright sunlight? Mesh networking? Water resistent? Drop resistent?
- sqrt7744, on 10/10/2007, -2/+35yes, and with while they're at it why don't they make a version with a 3.0GHz processor, 4 GB of ram, 19inch widescreen display, full size keyboard, 250GB hard disk, NVIDIA's latest graphics chip and Windows VISTA? I'll tell you why - because that would TOTALLY defeat the purpose!
- Chubakkaz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+35the logo XO, skull and bones! lawl
baby 1337 sauces in the making.
/runs - inactive, on 10/16/2007, -5/+33:-( If only my hands were little bit smaller.
- viserov, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29That's what she said
- aigulf, on 10/10/2007, -0/+26Your post reads like a Nigerian phishing e-mail. Dare I say you are trying to discourage competition?
- magnusdopus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27Maybe this planet has a future. This is the greatest thing I've heard all year. Kudos. I'm going to buy one ASAP.
- theghoul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27Wow. Very innovative. $10 battery? Solar charger, mesh network, tablet screen?
This has clearly went over the pc bloggers heads.. wake up idiots, its not for you!

etc.. - absinthemind, on 10/10/2007, -2/+25"Start diggin me down now, since I know talking bad about the laptops for the kids is so un PC"
More accurately, we'll dig you down for your cruel cynicism, unqualified blanket statements, lack of any constructive ways to better achieve the OLPC's goals and for generally whining without contributing anything of value to the thread. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+28Why don't you go have a seat over there.
- inactive, on 10/16/2007, -1/+22"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don't have [laptops] and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children."
- TheTaoOfBill, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24I was making fun of the term "Kid Magnet"
- dadioflex, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24They're being distributed to kids in stable third world countries, so probably any day now.
- chsbrgr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22The pull-cord crank is a great idea, and could double as an alibi too ... "What ARE you doing in there Annan?", "Nothing Mom! Just charging my battery"
- wizalt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19Note to self: start XO data entry company
- andyakadum, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21Better keep them away from MJ then!
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20If the OLPC fits your needs, then great. If not, then don't buy one. I'm thinking long battery life might make it good for writing novels without having to go for a system that needs to be plugged in every 2-3 hours while you're in a word processor while it is baking your lap. And it certainly seems useful as an ebook reader (tablet mode).
If you have a problem with $400, remember you are buying TWO laptops for $400 not one. (and just donating one of them to a kid's education) So show me a Windows laptop that is as powerful where you get two for $400? :) - TheKorn2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16IM IN UR MESH, E RAYCIN ALL UR PORN
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22This is already the most tax-deducted item of 2008. Charitable donations have never been so easy.
- compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17amazing idea here for someone that just uses a laptop for reading or msn or light use like that $400 and get a tax receipt AND help a child that's in a 3rd world country by donating them a laptop? I'm all for that I hope these come to Canada if not I'm going over the border and buying one just because even if I just have it sitting on my desk as a surf machine it would feel good knowing that it was $400 well spent I get a box that's for surfing and some kid who's poor gets a helping hand that really does (not to sound corny) make me feel very good deep down
- HerbertScrunge, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18It's "deter" not "detour" and, contrary to popular opinion, Nigerians don't have some genetic predisposition towards e-mail scams.
- nbhagwat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15That's an Indian swastika.
- murraj2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Maybe you should learn english too, the word you're looking for is deter.
- emtshea, on 10/16/2007, -3/+17spillproof, rainproof, dustproof, drop-proof, fanless, silent, weighs 3.2 pounds, one battery charge will power six hours of heavy activity, graphics tablet, game-pad controllers and a screen that rotates into a tablet configuration. All for just $200? My +$2000 macbook pro doesn't even do all that. WTF Apple!!! I want my money back, damn it.
- OrangeTide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Careful it might erase your kid's brains.
- amneosis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I hope they extend this offer beyond the States, I'd happily buy one to give one free from the UK.
- revjustin2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13That title is kinda scary to me. I like the product, however. I will be getting one for my kids and for the good children of Peru (or where ever)
- CrackaPleeze, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. The only thing you mentioned that was topical and true was that they reversed themselves on selling to the general public. The logic behind that has also been made public:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6994957.stm
FTA above:
::The offer to the general public comes after the project's founder admitted that concrete orders from the governments of developing nations had not always followed verbal agreements.
Nicholas Negroponte told the New York Times: "I have to some degree underestimated the difference between shaking the hand of a head of state and having a cheque written.
"And yes, it has been a disappointment." ::
Also, this isn't financed by the US government. It's being put together by some people with enough energy and goodwill to bring a good idea to life with hard work. I'm not seeing how this is a "battle of politics". Governments aren't involved, except insofar as some are placing orders.
I dug you down, not because what you said was "un-PC", but because what you said was stupid and uninformed. - stealthrocket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12The article says the name was changed to XO because turned 90° it looks like a child. Funny thing is, depending on which way you turn it 90° it looks like a head an d body or someone screaming. Either way I guess it still looks like a child.
- LoneJeeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I want a screen saver that looks like one of those "the cow says moo" turning arrow deals that operates on the pull-cord. With a few thousand animal sounds. "the madagascar tree monkey says ooo eee ooo eee ah ah ah ah". that would be sweet.
- danthegrant, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12it's a review, not a news report
- schestowitz, on 10/16/2007, -6/+17The Eeee is infected with the Xandros bug. Don't touch it, or else you pay a convicted monopolist.
- NeMoD, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16Does it come with a douche reporter?
- lcmatt, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16MESH Network = Instant porn transfer.
- reddfox321, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12you sir are an ass.
Why can't we concentrate on education in the US AAAND give these kids laptops? Its not an either or. - Unclekoolaid, on 10/10/2007, -8/+18I love this idea and may participate in this myself but Please tell me there are going detouring Nigerians from using these to teach kids to scam us even more then they do right now.
- clothmonkey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhism_and_Hinduism ...
Naziism(sp?) is a black taint on what was originally a benevolent symbol, one which far predates the concept. I wouldn't use it, personally, because of the confusion its use is likely to engender, but as long as it is not used in support of Nazis or Nazi propaganda, well, who's to say, right? Also, Buddhism is only one of many places where the symbol came into use. When you think about it, it's a fairly simple design, after all. - thbt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10This is awesome... makes me want to help develop for it. Both for the cool tech and for the great cause.
- groverblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9This was a great article. Informative. Wish it was longer.
- willclarke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yeah... that's why they're running the give one get one promotion... so a child will get one for free. Most of the recipients will get one for free, either through the promotion, through private donations, or through government donations.
- zengonzo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Only Nigerian princes.
- beerbarron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8100 dollar laptop = 50 - 55 pounds, thats cheaper than most refurbished laptops! if it has a decent word processor and wifi this would be perfect for kids to use in any environment! and wow at 24 hour reading battery life and clever use of solar!
- bbardlbradd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8efing brilliant. Someone has finally used it appropriately. Kudos.
- frazw, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Only Deposed Nigerian princes fleeing the country.
- JJCDAD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Lynyrd?
- zengonzo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It sure is fortunate that an infamous historical group didn't adopt any more primitive symbols. Imagine if everyone freaked out every time they saw a square or a triangle.
