- LiquidSpark, on 02/15/2009, -2/+93I hope Linux people don't pirate this game. It's not FOSS. The devs were cool enough to not infect the game with DRM and something like 90% of people on Windows pirated it. This is a great game and well worth the $20 price tag.
- astutissimo, on 02/15/2009, -0/+43It's a great game, and the developers are real good guys. I'm happy to give them my money.
- cheesehound, on 02/15/2009, -10/+43They'll be on Windows. Playing games D:
- louiebaur, on 02/15/2009, -0/+26I was hesitating between the WiiWare version and the Linux one, but I decided to buy the Linux one instead (cause I can re-install it if I buy a new computer, for instance…).
- TheCoolestNerd, on 02/15/2009, -8/+32I believe most cellphones run on linux
- katrayun, on 02/15/2009, -0/+19Look, you should use an OS that does what you need it to do. No need to mock.
- XeroXenith, on 02/15/2009, -9/+24The ball's starting to roll. Let's see where those "ZOMG WHERS TEH GAMEZ?!" Linux haters are in a few years.
- tech42er, on 02/16/2009, -0/+13I think it's a clone of Super Mario Brothers. Let's look at the similarities:
You travel through a level to get to a goal. - benologist, on 02/15/2009, -10/+23I believe most cellphones still have more games than Linux.
- Yarkz, on 02/15/2009, -3/+15Ahh what a great game I pirated it for windows and felt the devleopers deserved it and bought it on wiiware.
- Khast, on 02/15/2009, -0/+12I am too stressed out. Try again in a minute or two. -the Server
I see the digg effect is causing the server a headache. :P - burkay, on 02/16/2009, -0/+11I think it is a clone of Oblivion. Let's look at the similarities:
I didn't play neither of them. - grungegbunny, on 02/15/2009, -3/+13The demo is quite fun.
- xaccie, on 02/15/2009, -0/+9This game always brings a smile to my face, regardless the gaming platform
- irisblaze, on 02/15/2009, -1/+10i am gonna buy it just to support games on linux :) it's not my type of games though
- Stonekeeper, on 02/15/2009, -0/+9I bought a copy. It's well worth the money. Kudos to the devs. I'll be buying more as gifts.
- Thoku, on 02/15/2009, -0/+8Awesome game, I bought it. Glad the developers support Linux.
- Meep3D, on 02/15/2009, -2/+10WTF? Have you ever actually played Lemmings? It's nothing like it!
- LiquidSpark, on 02/16/2009, -2/+10The game is nothing like Lemmings, and it's not 3 hours either. It's longer.
- Vadi0, on 02/15/2009, -2/+10My pre-order of a year earlier paid off.
- ahawks, on 02/15/2009, -1/+9This is an EXCELLENT game. I played it on the Wii but I'm sure it would be great on a computer as well.
Please, this is one game worthy of your support and not piracy! - Hermmunster, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7The only reason porting would be near impossible would be due to the fact that they didn't use open API for game development like OpenGL. OpenGL 3.0 has, essentially, feature parity to DX10. If they had, porting would be relatively simple. Enemy-Territory: Quake Wars was one such game, Unreal Tournament is another example. All the games in that series are OpenGL and have Linux Clients. The original WoW was developed on the Mac, and there was a Linux client (that they subsequently removed). There's no economic suicide there.
What gets to me more than anything is that people make these stupid insubstantiated statements and they've never even looked at the market, at Linux or at developer commitment. It's just sad.
And, a lack of games has nothing to do with Linux. OSX has been out for a long time and there are, in comparison to Windows, a minute amount of games available for it. Dumping on Linux is just foolish and it shows a lack of understanding of all things "not Windows". - vIk34, on 02/15/2009, -0/+7already played through it with wine under linux...if only this news would have come sooner :(
great game tho -- anyone who likes games created by developers who actually had fun while doing it will enjoy it :)
((fallout and baldurs gate are also great examples :) )) - mrmacky, on 02/15/2009, -0/+7Well, I for one think there's a huge difference between games and most other software.
Other software is tools. You need these tools to do your daily tasks, thus they should be free.
Games are the creative brainchilds of very talented individuals working together with graphic artists etc. A lot of work goes into a game, and a game is not necessary for your daily workflow, it's not a core essential so it shouldn't be free like a core essential.
I'm not saying ordinary programmers aren't creative, I'm just saying it takes a different kind of creativity to throw together a game like World of Goo than it does to throw together say an office suite. - daftman, on 02/15/2009, -1/+8I bought 2 to support them. One for me and one for the wife. It is a nice fun and unique game. The non-DRM alone worth the $20
- Vadi0, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7I think we made a case in point:
"Update 4: It’s only been 2 days since the release of the Linux version and it already accounts for 4.6% of the full downloads from our website. Our thanks to everyone who’s playing the game on Linux and spreading the word. Here are a couple of nifty stats:
* About 12% of Linux downloads are of the .rpm package, 30% are of the .tar.gz package, and 57% are of the .deb package.
* More copies of the game were sold via our website on the day the Linux version released than any other day. This day beat the previous record by 40%. There is a market for Linux games after all :)" - Wandel, on 02/15/2009, -0/+6Still waiting for the Profanity Pack™ though.
- Vadi0, on 02/15/2009, -0/+6Guys, you stressed out the server with the Linux announcement. Also:
"Update 2: We’ve been getting a lot of emails from people who purchased the game on Steam and other places who want access to the Linux version. At first we were simply sending people download links, but the volume of requests has increased significantly and we simply can’t keep up, so for now, we’re sorry, but the Linux version will only be available for free to those who purchased the game via our website."
How can they even check if the person did buy it on steam? - Lunarbunny, on 02/15/2009, -2/+7I know I'm raining on your parade with this seriousness nonsense, but it's the money they had put together for the game, not their life savings.
- AirRaven, on 02/15/2009, -0/+5Fantastic game.
Would recommend upping its resolution to something more impressive than 800x600, mind, if you're using a PC version. The Wii Version's restricted to the default- which is a pity, since it's got the superior control scheme by far.
To up the resolution/Widescreen it, in Windows, go to Program Files\WorldOfGoo\Preferences\Config.txt and adjust however you like. You'll need the 1.30 Patch to fix the bugs you get with widescreen resolutions, but once that's on, you're laughing.
Looks lovely in higher quality. - Meep3D, on 02/15/2009, -0/+4Porting Steam to Linux would be relatively easy. Porting the _games_ on Steam to Linux would be borderline impossible and very likely economic suicide, so I don't ver see it happening.
- next, on 02/15/2009, -2/+6I'll be pirating it, but that's because I have a boxed copy that's Windows only..so I think in this case, it's justified. :p
- int19h, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Well made little game! Support them so that a profession like this is possible. :)
- Timmmm, on 02/16/2009, -2/+6No that's rubbish. Most mobiles aren't smart phones and run something like Nokia's S40.
They don't have any decent games of course... - chris86wm, on 02/15/2009, -0/+4...his name is "xptweaker". Pretty sure he uses windows.
- strangeman, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4The reason this took so long, was that the guys wanted the perfect experience for the linux users, too. A bug-free game with no real problems.. So they hired a great linux dev who came up with a working port in 24h. He then realized the cross-platform libs (like irrklang) where not that suitable to run nicely on every machine. So he changed them.. the rest was pretty much 4 weeks of fine-tuning (sound and graphics issues). i.e. if you run the game on an Acer Aspire One (with a lower resolution than the default), it will automatically pick that resolution and will run perfectly.
You shouldn't have to pick the sound driver. What was your problem? The "auto" setting tries the drivers in this order: pulseaudio -> alsa -> oss -> arts, esd
Anyway.. I've had lots of fun with this game (still do) and I think it is well worth $20 (€14).. That's the amount of money i shell out for two cocktails. All they leave behind is a headache. WoG on the other hand leaves me with a warm and fuzzy feeling in my head. Always puts a smile in my face when I run the game ;) - djphatjive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4The Wii version is awesome.
- bmcnally, on 02/15/2009, -5/+9Pay for it you ***** freeloaders.
Glad to see some people on Digg are supporting the devs, AND THEIR INDEPENDENT COMPANY. Sending two people a check sounds all noble, until you realize that businesses need to show profits, they need to show cash flow, and they need to pay taxes on expected revenue. - damntourists, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4god i've wasted so many hours playing this game when i should have been productive.
- AirRaven, on 02/15/2009, -0/+4...They run their own sodding business. =\
It goes to them anyway! - rakeshishere, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Same here.. Finished this game twice on Windows long back... and game is worth buying..After playing it. I have bought 3 copies to gift for my friends ... Thought this game had lot of fun... and Indie game developers really need support.
- daftman, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3A fun game is a fun game irrespective of how it looks. If part of your fun involves looking at pretty high-rendered graphics then go for your life. Most casual gamers, especially women, don't really care how the game looks and long as the gameplay is fun.
- SteveMax, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Actually, since thise dumbphones run J2ME, there is probably more games for them than for Linux. Or for OS X. Or for the Xbox 360, Wii and PS3.
Of course, this doesn't mean there are more than two that are worth a second look. - Origin415, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3I installed the deb, and it has a thing under Games, as well as you can just run it from the command line with "WorldOfGoo"
- nmanguy, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3What did they exactly spend that 10,000 on? Was it just living expenses while they programed, as well as buying a domain and a few computers?
- strangeman, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4Man.. A LOT of people think differently. Especially people who love old school games. I DO know some people who don't like WoG.. but definately not because it lacks polish. This game is perfect from beginning to end.. there are no gameplay issues at all and the amount of details the devs put in design, sound effects and animations is breathtaking.
Sometimes you just don't click with a game. You can't seriously look at the game and NOT see the efford the devs put into it. To say it's worth ***** is a slap in their face.. this game is the work of almost two years. - mrmacky, on 02/15/2009, -0/+3Wow did this seriously just come out? I searched for the game yesterday (after seeing it on Windows a long while back) and found the linux version. I thought it had been Linux supported since launch I had no idea this was some long winded port.
Still, the demo works great after I set my sound driver in config.txt - very cool game. Not sure its worth the $20 yet but definitely considering getting it.
If nothing else it'd be $20 well spent to support gaming on Linux. - damntourists, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3google is your friend.
- MacHarborGuy, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3"How can they even check if the person did buy it on steam?"
because they sell World of Goo on steam and most likely have the customer's email address, or at least a way that they can sent the instructions to the customer thru steam. -
