- Bicep, on 05/26/2008, -2/+192Works with Linux/Ubuntu logos need to start showing up on websites, computer ads, hardware packaging, etc.
Right on. Thanks for the submit. - gsiliceo, on 05/26/2008, -5/+153Nice one mister uk gentlemen. You are bloody awesome.
- n0odles, on 05/26/2008, -4/+133It would be cool to have Linux Compatible Penguin sticker on products.
- getisboy, on 05/26/2008, -2/+94but we all know how accurate the "Works with Vista" logos are
- Phocion55, on 05/26/2008, -2/+93I gotta say - I'm really impressed with our friends across the pond. They clearly have their act together when it comes to promoting computing choice, and keeping Microsoft honest.
- BlueSkyfish, on 05/26/2008, -2/+83It's nice to see people finally getting a choice when buying a pre-built computer. The mandatory Microsoft tax has been going on for far too long.
- mazza558, on 05/26/2008, -0/+63I'm from the UK, and to be fair, this is the first time I've seen such an advert. Most of them just have the Vista logo.
- twtmc, on 05/26/2008, -1/+45Actually looks like a nice laptop. Nothing fancy, just functional. And for $500 with Ubuntu.
- sk11, on 05/26/2008, -14/+49So, even a basic Windows OEM XP installation costs £50 ($100)!! That's 50 reasons to switch to Ubuntu right there.
/In before the "but i cantz ran crysus in it" cretins. - ssam, on 05/26/2008, -5/+37though it looks like it has an SIS graphics card, which probably means SIS motherboard/chipsets. i have installed ubuntu on a couple of SIS based laptops and they are not much fun. No graphics acceleration, no power management, general problems and oddness.
- elambing, on 05/26/2008, -5/+27good deal, id rather have linux than windows
- Philosomatika, on 05/26/2008, -3/+22I must say Novatech is a brilliant UK site for cheap tech stuff.
- Whaines, on 05/26/2008, -0/+19Why wouldn't they just throw in an Ubuntu CD?
- Cryoniq, on 05/26/2008, -1/+19This I have been looking forward to for a very long time now :P
- Callik, on 05/26/2008, -4/+21Crysis on a Celeron M, 1GB of RAM and integrated graphics?
I'd like to see that. - Peterix, on 05/26/2008, -0/+16Now this is a thing I would like to see more often.
It would save me from checking if something works and I would probably buy more hardware if I knew that. Often I see something nice and the lack of compatibility info stops me from buying it. - carl0ski, on 05/26/2008, -0/+16obviously you havent used Ubuntu 7.04 7.10 or 8.04
Open NVIDIA drivers are installed by default.
A nice Hardware wizard prompts on first boot from the tray of availability of NVIDIA official drivers.
These install at the single click of a button - GIFF3, on 05/26/2008, -0/+16http://www.system76.com/
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -3/+17then you realized it was in pounds...
- Myztry, on 05/26/2008, -0/+13Canonical really needs to start certifying Ubuntu hardware. I'd certainly pay a couple of dollars extra for certified hardware and it would provide a revenue stream for Canonical.
I would also specify Ubuntu certified hardware even for Windows targeted systems. It shows the manufacturers are serious about providing drivers. Not only for Linux, but for when the Windows version changes.
There is nothing worse than getting caught with hardware that is unsupported when the latest version of Windows is released. - flashback99, on 05/26/2008, -0/+12Yup, first time I've seen anything linux related over here too.
- Tenoq, on 05/26/2008, -1/+13The EU not bending over and taking it from Microsoft is what he's talking about. That said, I think Europeans in general are more open to OSS than other parts of the world, particularly the US. Just look at their Firefox usage.
- sk11, on 05/26/2008, -1/+13Those are the one's costing £250. Some of the more expensive laptops have Nvidia 8800M GTX 512MB cards.
- tiuk, on 05/26/2008, -0/+12And that makes you somehow superior?
I hope you wake up one day. - renegadeafk, on 05/26/2008, -1/+12Yeah using the restricted drive manager is even easier than installing drivers on windows.
- Disease, on 05/26/2008, -1/+12He's too old to use the internet.
- essjay, on 05/26/2008, -0/+10This isn't a common thing and there's no way the average computer buyer in the UK would know what Ubuntu is, or what it does.
A few years ago (ok, like 10) a major highstreet retailer, PC World, had a major push for linux, specifically Red Hat. They had little penguin footprints leading to the Red hat aisle and everything. Posters, associated boxed software (Think Star Office) the whole ten yards. Except it confused people and in the end they stopped selling it. In fact they went to complete opposite direction shortly afterwards aiming for the dumbest possible consumers. So you had the situation where a store called PC World didn't even sell things like memory or motherboards. I think they got their fungers burned from the Red hat experience, and they won't make that mistake again (although they are slowly going out of business, so it probably doesn't matter). - sembetu, on 05/26/2008, -5/+15With all due respect. You're an idiot. Ubuntu is moronically easy, and requires no command line for an install suitable for the broadest slice of the population. If that's too difficult, though, try Linux Mint. There's a desktop ready Linux distro. You should try using a few distros before trolling.
BTW: I am OS Agnostic. I use all three major operating systems on a regular basis, and as far as I'm concerned, it is **mostly** a matter of taste, save for a few widely used but unsupported applications under Linux. - daengbo, on 05/26/2008, -2/+11Except that it doesn't actually come with an OS installed or on a CD. "No Operating System." You need to get your own CD and there's obviously no support.
At least it's a step in the right direction. - inactive, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7Or better yet, Check and see if all of the hardware drivers needed are enabled by default in the kernel configuration, and that the drivers work for the specific model. Even if it fails sometimes It would be helpful to know. That, or just test it :P
Of course, Ubuntu does NDISwrapper good as far as i can tell, so it may be inaccurate to not just say Ubuntu compatible or do two separate checks.
If Linux becomes an industry standard for home computing, It won't take long for this sort of thing to become more important. Companies might even go out of their way to market to Linux users by checking specific distros - But that's all a long way away. - shamittomar, on 05/26/2008, -7/+14And I don't come to Digg to see comments in opposition to Ubuntu.
I buried you !!! - pHr34kY, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7That's great!
However I'd be happier if the average consumer knew that anything that can run Windows can also run Ubuntu. I guess more ads like this will make that a reality. It's a good first step. - beermad, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7It's a start, and better than nothing, but surely it would have been better if they'd actually INSTALLED Ubuntu (or better still, Kubuntu) on it.
The average computer buyer is no more likely to want to install Linux themselves than they are likely to want to install Windows themselves, so it's only going to work for buyers with some technical knowledge. - Charlie180, on 05/26/2008, -2/+9Open Synaptic Package Manager - Install WINE
Right Click Setup.exe > Select 'Open with WINE' > Install Photoshop. Run Photoshop.
I'd be pretty amazed if that took 6 minutes, let alone 6 hours. No configuration needed, it just works. - nlight, on 05/26/2008, -1/+8It's a start. A few years ago computer stores wouldn't even admit there is such a thing as a free operating system. They were either forced by ***** up Microsoft contracts to (try to) sell Windows to everyone or notebooks came with DOS preinstalled.
Here, in Bulgaria, many of the cheap notebooks (less than $1k) come with preinstalled Ubuntu. - czeman, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7Ummm....I run Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), and Mac OS. I haven't had to go command line with my Ubuntu desktop yet, and I do quite a bit with it.
- Burn, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7Who said anything about Apple?
- FolkTheory, on 05/26/2008, -1/+8the reviews state that it actually DOESN'T work full well with ubuntu...no wireless out of the box! thats a pretty big thing to say it works with if it doesn't.
- Rowan187, on 05/26/2008, -2/+9I purchased a System 76 laptop in April 2007, which came pre-installed with Ubuntu, and I have to say. I'm really happy with it. It even runs Vista Ultimate flawlessly. http://system76.com
- MattBD, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7Tesco (the largest UK supermarket chain) is already selling a computer with preinstalled Ubuntu.
- tian2992, on 05/26/2008, -2/+9So the lolcats cannot play Crysis on it?
- werries, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7lol wait you're putting pirating something on a record?
not a smart choice. watch out there =D - tian2992, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7It is called Meta, it just happens to have a Windows logo printed on it, on Sun's Keyboards it has a nice Rhombus
- gilbot53, on 05/26/2008, -0/+6I am using Ubuntu 8.04 on this old Dell Inspiron 1000 that I was going to throw out after it virtually stopped working with XP and Norton Security. It has been given a new lease of life. No problems with wireless via old Netgear PCMCIA card.
- Sammi84, on 05/26/2008, -0/+6Just wish they would open a shop in the EU.
- naich, on 05/26/2008, -1/+6If you actually read the comment then what happened was:
1. Install Ubuntu - Everything works except wireless
2. Install XP - Everything works except wireless
3. Ring support and find the fix for wireless
And that's it. The problem wasn't with the OS. There's no reason to think that the fix for the XP wireless problem also wouldn't fix the Ubuntu problem. - gudnbluts, on 05/26/2008, -1/+6It really would. I bought a laptop the weekend before last, and I really had to do some research to find something that'd work well with it. It would have saved me a lot of nipping onto the web to look up graphics cards etc.
Even then, it ended up being a pain in the arse to install, but everything works better on it now than it does in Vista. - Burn, on 05/26/2008, -0/+5In other works it /works with/ Ubuntu but they don't install it for you.
- hungryduck, on 05/26/2008, -2/+7I see.
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -0/+5SiS is pretty ***** bad, Or at least most of their cards.
