- brettalton, on 10/10/2008, -0/+33Photoshop CS3 apparently installs now.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7829 - trmanco, on 10/10/2008, -4/+32Lets show some love for Wine....
Digg it to the front page :P - 4321234, on 10/11/2008, -0/+26The economy's so bad, I can't afford to pirate anything newer than photoshop 6.
- dustout, on 10/11/2008, -3/+26*generic Linux is awesome comment*
- WestonP, on 10/11/2008, -3/+23It's amazing to see how far WINE has come over the years. It's more Win32 compatible than Vista in some respects.

- roebeet, on 10/11/2008, -1/+17What if you've already lost your virginity? Does that mean it grows back?
- sirmasterboy, on 10/11/2008, -3/+19Too bad CS4 is almost here... lol

- dankegel, on 10/10/2008, -0/+13See the Wine Appdb entry for Photoshop CS3,
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ...
for important caveats. In particular, you have to install native gdiplus,
and it's too slow. - roebeet, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13I'm sure you knew this was coming.....
Wine
Is
Not an
Emulator. - werries, on 10/11/2008, -1/+13Yes, has for quite some time, and java has recently gone open source too.
- legendxx, on 10/11/2008, -4/+14ITS A TRAP! If you learn about wine or linux in general then you surrender any hope of losing your virginity.
- regeya, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9http://www.winehq.org/
"Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix."
Basically, it's an attempt to be as compatible with Windows as possible, while using APIs available on the host operating system, and strives to allow one to run Windows software. It has varying degrees of success, largely because important aspects of the Windows API are closed.
Most people are interested in Wine for playing games. There's a commercial fork of Wine called Cedega: http://www.transgaming.com/ I haven't gotten an update in ages (lost time/interest in games) but way back when Cedega was great for those titles which will never, ever be ported to Linux, and rely on those completely closed portions of windows which will take loads of reverse engineering. Nowadays they seem to be concentrating on the MacOS market with Cider. - srg13, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9CS4's interface is more similar to CS3's than CS3 was to CS2, so hopeful when CS3 works well, CS4 should too.

- Technophobia, on 10/11/2008, -1/+10Fixed my StarCraft!
- charlie763, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8You can run Windows in a virtual machine using VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/). Install the addons and you can run Photoshop in seamless mode on an Ubuntu host machine. I use the same setup to access some Citrix-based applications that only run on windows.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9In lay-man's terms
"Meh" - noen, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9Not true legendxx, chicks digg Wine.
- dignation, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9*generic comment noting the generalization of this thread*
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -2/+9As much as I wanted to bury you for being a troll, it's the truth.
- FasmTrout, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8What is Wine exactly? I know it is popular around these parts but I have never been able to get an exact answer on what it actually does/provides. Sorry for being a noob.
- Meocross, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7*generic troll comment*
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7Gah, *****. I need to get this working as my computer forensics course uses this exclusively in high school and I hate having to do my homework at school.
Keep clicking google ads, somewhere along the line the money is getting into the Wine project, I can feel it :P - Clbull, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8Translation: Not without problems
- sceptic101, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7*generic c..c..c.commboo breaker*
- reconsldr74d, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8I've actually had two games that were _made_ for Windows which I couldn't get to run on XP that run on Linux using WINE... go figure
- gallito89, on 10/11/2008, -0/+7Hmm this is one of those things destined to make it up the digg ranks :D
- m1bxd, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6Because if "Photoshop CS3 apparently installs now" it is worth commenting on!
- EXTER, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6WINE Is Not an Emulator

Being a noob is no reason for sorrow. STAYING a noob is. :P
Welcome to the party. - pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6Linux has native java, no?
- raggles, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5*generic use of pedobear ascii picture*
- srg13, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5The .Net framework is Gold on Wine's website http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=v ... . You can just run these two commands to get the .Net 2.0 framework to run:
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks corefonts dotnet20
Additionally, you can run Mono, which will run some .Net apps directly, or run the Windows version of Mono in Wine, which I think can run more apps, because it is able to run mixed-mode assemblies. - raggles, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5*generic mildly angered reply*
- Protoss, on 10/11/2008, -1/+6"TF2 and Portal do not render correctly with nvidia-drivers-169.x and above"
NICE! Now maybe I won't have to reboot into Vista to get my TF2 fix! - dankegel, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Pretty darn well. See http://wiki.winehq.org/AdobePhotoshop
- sloppychris, on 10/11/2008, -1/+5Then why are there 450+ diggs?
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Well, please ignore them completely from now on.
If you ever change your mind, mail me, I like helping. - ruskie, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Only you can answear that question.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4We know Google submits many bug fixes for Wine, and it is evident by the new Picasa V 3.0 beta which is lightning fast and puts Mono based application F-spot to shame.
- mnzaki, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3*generic anti-generic comment*
- GarrettGrimsley, on 10/11/2008, -7/+10Bug fixes, nothing to see here. Move along people.
