WINE stands for "Wine Is Not an Emulator". WINE is a compatibility layer that lets UNIX-like operating systems run programs written for Windows (anything with .exe, and possibly .msi and .bat)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_(software) - Protoss, on 06/06/2008, -1/+30Because open-source developers are sarcastic as hell.
- wpgbrownie, on 06/07/2008, -3/+31It only took 15 years to get to Version 1.0, at least its doing better than Duke Nukem Forever.
- Smegzor, on 06/07/2008, -1/+207092 Windows Genuine Advantage Tool times out while connecting
Dammit! I need this working on Linux!!!!!! - Spr0k3t, on 06/06/2008, -1/+20It would be LAME not to.
- canthraxp, on 06/06/2008, -1/+18Congratulations to the Wine team, each release is just awesome, I have fireworks 8 running on wine and every update the interface feels more speedy and responsive.
- knight666, on 06/06/2008, -4/+20I would just like to point out the following: Diablo II runs beautifully on Wine RC-2 (I haven't had teh Internetz for a few days :(), which is an excellent timekiller when you don't have Interwebs.
Good job team Wine! - Darkx1337, on 06/06/2008, -3/+18I wish they would fix that steam chat problem. I would help but I have no programming skills!
- Mordisquitos, on 06/07/2008, -1/+16Why? Because.
Because Every Computer Amateur Uses Said Expressions. - boobsbr, on 06/07/2008, -1/+15unsuccessful troll is unsuccessful, please die.
- T8erT0T, on 06/07/2008, -1/+13That's something to be proud of. At least they're trying to make it the best it can be with some sense of work ethic instead of stamping a "1.0" on a piece of dookie.
- inactive, on 06/07/2008, -1/+13Wine is a life saver.
- DigitalJester, on 06/06/2008, -0/+12Does anyone know why so many open source projects use recursive acronyms in their names?
- srg13, on 06/07/2008, -0/+11They set a criteria of a few applications (one of them Photoshop CS2) running flawlessly. There's still a lot of apps that don't run, but there are thousands that do.
- smrekar, on 06/07/2008, -1/+12I predict this troll will be slain.
- foldor, on 06/07/2008, -0/+10Whoa, you HAVE to tell me how you managed to post on Digg without the interwebs. :p
- blipblopblip, on 06/07/2008, -0/+10Maybe he has his own, personal internet.
- SuperSunny, on 06/07/2008, -1/+10Behind what? Running Windows apps? Why don't you compare native apps?
- blipblopblip, on 06/07/2008, -0/+9"Hopefully a Wine developer reads Digg... or at least someone who understands."
My response to you is: DX9 is pretty close, a lot of work has gone into it. The remaining issues we have seem to be with certain drivers. - Reziarfg, on 06/07/2008, -0/+9Lame is not an MP3 encoder.
Except now it is! Oh misnomer, how you mock me so. - localzuk, on 06/07/2008, -0/+9Props to the Wine team on this! It's a mammoth task and they are chipping away at it with astonishing speed.
- benologist, on 06/07/2008, -0/+9I think with a front page story every week not many people were confused what WINE stands for.
- barbobot, on 06/07/2008, -0/+8since 2006 actually
http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/news/28 - PhireN, on 06/07/2008, -0/+8It worked back in 2007, must be a regression. :-P
- tuxisawesome, on 06/07/2008, -2/+10I've seen Linux kernel 2.x.y RC 9 before.
- BedPost, on 06/07/2008, -1/+9LAME - Lame Acronyms Meandering Everywhere
...I'm sorry. - egroeg85, on 06/07/2008, -1/+9Can someone tell me what exactly the 1.0.0 milestone means for WINE? Is this really just a step that means something to the coders? I don't expect every windows program to work perfectly on it just because it's version 1.0.0.
- BedPost, on 06/07/2008, -0/+7I'm not going to lie, I'm digging you purely because of your name. Jealousy abounds.
- neko, on 06/07/2008, -0/+6You shouldn't mix fireworks with wine.
- duckonquack, on 06/07/2008, -1/+7Wine Is Not an Emulator
- boobsbr, on 06/07/2008, -1/+7lol ur a retard. unix was not made to run windows applications.
- Culyt, on 06/07/2008, -3/+9RC... 4, with the endless 0.99.9xx releases its like there trying to see just how long they can approach 1.0 without ever reaching it. I think I will wait until Wine 1.0 RC4 and 1/5 to upgrade ☺
☢ - srg13, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5Because we all know that a version numbers are directly comparable between products, and a direct indication of features...
Idiot. - expert01, on 06/07/2008, -1/+6I wish the Debian packager would install the Xrender headers so I could actually use steam - I'm compiling RC4 right now because of that minor blunder.
At least the guy who maintains it for the Ubuntu repos has it installed, so I won't have to compile the final version. - BIOHazard87, on 06/07/2008, -1/+6I hear ya man :/ I love Wine but sadly I don't know how to program well enough to help out.
- superppl, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5You could report bugs. They say half the problem is finding out what the problem is! And it doesn't take a lot of skills to do it. It's what I do. :)
- ssam, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5just install linux on your mac :-)
- srg13, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4Not official, but builds can be downloaded here:
http://thisismyinter.net/?p=29 or
http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/
Unfortunately you still need X11, but a Cocoa driver may be written sometime. - 4321234, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4No, but you can run dx9 on wine. Google dx9 on wine.
- localzuk, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4So what if they call it version 1? They could have used a completely different numbering scheme and be on version 25 or whatever now.
- Technohamster, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4Well photoshop CS2 runs perfectly. For most people that's enough.
- neko, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4It's an open source project, so the developers can choose a version number they feel happy with, rather than being pushed to bump the version number up to 7 just for marketing.
Edit: @NikoKun.
Damn new Digg comments, they've got Reply buttons everywhere! - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+4My cousins used to have a few different ones back during the AOL Wars.
- Anonymous3, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4If you ever have no internet for a month and are more or less stuck in the middle of nowhere with your laptop, Anti-Balance+PlugY provide even more timekill.
- GuyHersh, on 06/07/2008, -2/+5I take it as they implemented as many features as they want to for 1.0, and then reaching 1.0 means the squashed all the bugs that have been reported. Their hope is that there will be as few program incompatibilties as possible, but nearly every program that is popular works. Everything else should be ran natively when a linux based app.
- djbon2112, on 06/07/2008, -1/+4Why? Oh god why?
