- MavRevMatt, on 08/14/2008, -1/+38I used CrossOver before my laptop died, and it is a great implementation of Wine. I particularly like it because the apps I ran under it fit in better with the look and feel of my setup and it streamlined installation of Windows programs. It really is a great use of Wine, but of course the credit for getting at least half of the stuff working is due to the amazing Wine team.
- blipblopblip, on 08/14/2008, -0/+30A lot of the wine developers actually work for CrossOver.
- orangederange, on 08/14/2008, -1/+29I thought the guys over at CrossOver were part of Wine, or at least a major contributor of code?
- whiteknives, on 08/14/2008, -2/+22Free ≠ No cost. Free = Freedom.
- MavRevMatt, on 08/14/2008, -0/+19Yes, they are a major contributor both in code and funding.

- RichMan, on 08/14/2008, -0/+15Windows XP users are minimalists, weather they admit it or not. I could imagine some XP users migrating to a "Linux + blackbox + wine" setup the day that wine game support rivals XP itself. The before mentioned setup is lighter on resources than XP, it's more secure, and they aren't forced to use an old operating system to get the most frames-per-second out of there games.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+14For a few applications when you don't really want to take Windows's crap? No thanks, I'll take my perfectly integrated development environment and cross compiler for Windows (You can't cross compile Win->Linux, mind you, only visa-versa) and do my work on Linux.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+13CoLinux
Qemu
Virtualbox
And for Open Source POSIX apps you can use Cygwin, of course. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+12Actually, you can get the source to Crossover's Wine, but really Wine has surpassed Cedega and Crossover - it's just that it won't give you support (as in technical) or guarantees, and it comes with no setup utility (Though ideally setup should not be needed - of course that's only if every single thing works perfectly as the application expects it.)
- connieLingus, on 08/14/2008, -0/+11love linux but i need cubase 4 and reason 4 for my music production, plus a driver for my m-audio 1010lt card, so im stuck.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/14/2008, -1/+11No the point of Linux is to develop an operating system that can be used by anyone for anything, anywhere. The apps that run on top of Linux can be open or closed source, free of cost, or commercial.
There are hundreds of cases where FOSS stuff is "just good enough" for some things but not everything, and not for everyone. That's why there are companies who can come in and develop something further and charge for it. There's nothing wrong with that, especially in this case because the CrossOver guys are one of the main developers of Wine itself, and i would argue it would not be where it is right now without their direct support, financial and otherwise. - mrsteveman1, on 08/14/2008, -0/+10Some of the Wine team work for the CrossOver people
- DavidDigg, on 08/14/2008, -1/+11So what do I do if I want to run Linux apps on Windows?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -1/+10Or just don't use IE, but then again, you must tell me the secret to how you compile Linux applications on Windows - Virtual machines are too ***** slow for my projects (They are large and i often have to change headers that effect nearly the entire project. It's a serious bitch.)
Plus, Why risk virii at all if you can do all you need on Linux? Linux has plenty of nice features too, you know. - raydeen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+9We've had Windows. We've moved on.

- ZeNiTH456, on 08/14/2008, -1/+8There are good video editors for linux. Also most people wouldn't consider a video editor a must-have application.
- wonderbriefs, on 08/14/2008, -2/+8Is that gonna break the bank?
It's not the first time there's been a Linux distro that costs money. - wonderbriefs, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6Same here. I need Reason 4, plus a driver for my Presonus Firebox, my m-Audio Oxygen 49.
- raydeen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6It is sort of redundant in Ubuntu or any other distro that has an easy install for wine but is great for Macs in price and system footprint. I've used it a few times for teachers that needed some older software to run but didn't need a full Windows install to do it.
- cquilliam, on 08/14/2008, -0/+6My two main games are Guildwars and TF2. Using Crossover Games 7.1, Guildwars runs flawlessly, no matter what I do. As for TF2, it's getting better. If you don't mind running at lower graphics settings, it will get the job done quite nicely. However, I have an 8800GT, which I bought so things look nice. The guys at Crossover are working a lot (just check out Stefan's activity on the forums, etc.), and I have no doubt it won't be long before it will look almost as good as on Windows. I can currently run it in DX9 mode, but its down around 15-20fps, which is not quite playable for me until its over 35 or 40.

- lenninct, on 08/14/2008, -0/+5guess some ppl have not heard of Wine Doors
- specialbuddy1, on 08/14/2008, -2/+6Can I use Autocad map and Arcview with this?
- jjk7288, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4No but you can build CrossOver from source if you know where to look.
- Blashy, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4I have it simply to play Team Fortress 2, it plays the Valve games FLAWLESSLY. On iMac though.
- CyDharttha, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4The m-audio 1010 works fine in Linux, no config necessary. All 10 inputs and outputs are easy to route.
@nmnnotmynam: check out http://www.myspace.com/shanebertrands39squirtgun and http://www.myspace.com/thecwo
All music produced by those guys was done in Linux with Ardour and an m-audio 1010. Ardour (http://ardour.org/) is a great program. Much of the drumming for Shane's squirt tunes was done in Hydrogen (http://www.hydrogen-music.org/).
I've also got a buddy who migrated and wanted Buzztrack, multi-synth tracking prog with many great features. It works out of the box with complete feature set under wine. - rodz91, on 08/15/2008, -1/+5But, will it run crysis?
- jjk7288, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3While I agree that Wine and CrossOver are great programs with great developers and an awesome vision, the statement "you can run it using CodeWeavers' latest version of CrossOver Linux" isn't really completely true at this point.
As I understand it, Office 2007 support just made it into CrossOver, and it still isn't flawless. Photoshop CS3 still doesn't work very well.
Don't take it the wrong way -- I love Linux, and I want to see it expand its userbase (and get more native apps!) but telling people that everything works in Wine on Linux and then having it not work is going to disappoint them and they're going to have a bad taste in their mouth from it. Until Wine can get really, really close to native Windows XP (it does a hell of a job already) I don't think people should push quite so hard. - tech42er, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Photoshop CS2 runs flawlessly on Wine, so yeah.
- plbogen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3So how is paid-for commercial software free?
While I agree free (as in beer) software is not necessarily free (as in freedom).
I can't think of a way you can have software that is free (as in freedom) while having to pay for it.
At best I guess you could be donation-ware. But it seems like the necessities of being a for-profit company exclude free (as in freedom) software that you have to pay for. - 32bytes, on 08/14/2008, -1/+4Ever tried rosegarden + jack ?
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3Terminal and networking features...
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+3The most i've gotten in the way of music production is FL Studio 8 - which does work just fine.
Linux is obviously not a very good place for professional Music production yet. - myanatadesmond, on 08/15/2008, -0/+3www.playonlinux.com - This is the free cross-over.
Running ms office is a breeze. - DestroyFascism, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Its just as powerful as Cakewalk / Cubase these days. FL has grown and Gol has done amazing things. Its ease of use and UI is the best I have seen. But thats my opinion, if you like Cubase or the like then so be it. So long as East West and play systems integrate, which they do, then I have no problems.
- zcreem, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2Why so cryptic it is here http://www.codeweavers.com/products/source/
- mrsteveman1, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2It's nice on OS X, because standard Wine doesn't integrate as well. If you open a file inside a windows program with Crossover, it usually opens with the native app in OS X, like if you open an AVI file in say, utorrent, it will open with Quicktime player. Wine won't do that as far as i can see.
Similarly Crossover comes with its own X11 integrated, i don't think the main wine tree does, and Darwine (the new ones) are using Xquartz but it never seemed to work well. - 3leggedHorse, on 08/15/2008, -0/+2wine and winetricks seems kinda what crossover is.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2I know. It's a fun toy though ;)
- plbogen, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2I was under the impression that the per-application configuration tweaks that enable a given piece of software to run better than it does in vanilla Wine was proprietary and that was what you were paying for primarily.
- Taiyoryu, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Also KDE on Windows

- JoeMerchant, on 08/14/2008, -1/+2AutoCad 2002 gets an "Honorable Mention" - meaning that it looks like it might work, but is not supported.
- wannapiece, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Ack! No compatibility for SAM Broadcaster (only reason for running XP atm)
Have yet to config Darkice properly, seems to be more icecast oriented. - mrsteveman1, on 08/15/2008, -0/+1Yea the crossover guys implement specific fixes for applications, which the Wine project doesn't usually want to do. They focus on implementing the Win32 API as closely as possible and have largely left the end user stuff for others to work on. There are however free apps that do some of the things Crossover does.
