- saetaes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23Kqemu is open source:

KQEMU Changelog
version 1.3.0pre10:
- Changed license to GPL version 2
- x86_64 full virtualization support - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wine works well. I prefer it over VM any day. They are not the same thing!
- pufuwozu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17QEmu IS a virtual machine (VM).
- schoate09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12No. Qemu does not support direct graphics acceleration access, at least I don't believe. Even if it does, not current Dx libraries, plus it will run even slower than Qemu. I hardly consider this a seameless desktop.
- Arabani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10And I'll bet my old 33 MHz (in turbo mode!!!!) Wiindows 3.1 box will run faster than your hypothetical machine. :D
Oh, but how's this for a crazy idea? Create a Beowulf cluster out of all your virtual machines! - firstc624, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12isn't that what VM is for? If this works great, it would be good for all the windows guys who are holding back only because of that one program and don't want to use wine or the like to make it run.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@coolestkidalive
I've managed to get battlefield 2 running with wine. It took downloading the d3dx9_24.dll and d3dx9_25.dll files, but other than that it really wasnt any extra work (most dx9 games need them anyways) http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=3438 describes the exact proccess. You can't see the cursor in the menus (huge problem) but on the bright side, the game played fine for me. (I "defeated" the cursor problem by alt-tabbing to another window then moving the cursor to where i wanted, then alt-tabbing back)
I'm not trying to claim it's perfect, but i guess what i'm saying is that there's most certainly hope, and I think in the next couple wine releases it may become usable, which would be great.
cheers
-Dan - Arabani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I use VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org) for my VM. Works quite well, and it even includes 3d acceleration, although I'm not sure how good it is as I haven't actually tested it (probably basic stuff). It would be interesting to see how it compares with QEMU, though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Cool, now I can emulate windows on my emulated ubuntu virtual machine on my windows box
- SamuelDr2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Games won't work with virtualization/emulation for now, but soon VmWare will have accelerated desktop for VMs, which will help some games run, but not heavy on ressources games.
Games will work best with wine. There are some tutorials on the internet, here too : http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Non_Native_Game - theworldisround, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That's how I do it, and it seems to be much more "seamless" than this tutorials final product. Also easier to set up.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"I hardly consider this a seameless desktop."
Oh come on, Parallels Coherence Mac product claims the same thing and everyone's all "rah rah" about them. It has limitations yes, but I don't see why people have to be so negative.
BTW this same Ubuntu wiki article was on digg a month ago so it's a bit of a dupe
http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Windows_XP_apps_on_your_Ubuntu_desktop_now_with_Coherence - Jamminn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ Sunsneezer - http://www.vmware.com/
- custerfluck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yup, it's a recent change, but kqemu is oss now. There went your excuse.
- cowabuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Virtual Box is sweet.
- Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Why would you have a VM, which not only runs far slower, uses up more memory overhead but also doesn't even support reasonably accelerated 3D graphics in its current state? When the state of desktop virtualization improves, sure, but most current consumer products have simply been developed from enterprise products aimed at enterprise users.
- Jamminn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Only if you have two legal licences! :P
- Stonekeeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4done.
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I started using VirtualBox, and I admit it's a lot easier to setup than VMWare, but the one feature I miss is using an actual partition in a VM.
- Jamminn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This looks great however I will still be using VMWare. And, to be honest, I will still be using XP for anything VS2005 related; it _eats_ RAM under a virtual machine and is still by far my "killer app" for XP.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've actually read all those posts. If you go through you'll notice no one has successfully done seamless rdp with VirtualBox. The posts are asking if anyone has successfully done it. Apparently no one has. rDesktop and seamless rdp aren't the same thing. Seamless rdp takes the contents of a window and delivers them to you without the XP window borders, desktop and taskbar. Regular rdp opens the entire desktop, even in the best case scenerio (hide taskbar & maximize window on the xp app) you'll still have two sets of window borders.
- Sunsneezer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'd like, for one, a Linux VM for windows.
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Try VMWare server or VMWare player which are both free as in beer. Workstation??? why???
- sphetr2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Do you guys know of a tutorial explaining how to do this?
- twelvedogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eventually (mebee 2+ years) you will be able to run games in qemu, the new hypervisor support in kvm ( http://kvm.qumranet.com/kvmwiki ) helps running cpu heavy stuff, they just need to impliment the same sort of thing for other hardware, mostly graphics cards. This happens to be a ***** harder, since the drivers have a heap of mad hacks in them to get maximum speed. Vmware are making inroads into it and hopefully someone will try to start to impliment the same sort of thing for qemu, or graphics cards manufacturers will include better support for this type of thing directly into their linux drivers or actually the hardware itself
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I run QEMU and VirtualBox right after each other to test the performance. VirtualBox killed qemu hands down. It wasn't even close. Everything I read about qemu echoed what I witnessed, which essentially was a laggy mouse and poor re-draw rates. Under virtual box, I can't even tel the difference between native XP and XP in a VM. I have been searching for a way to do seamless RDP in virtualbox but unfortunately nobody (that I know of) has been able to pull it off yet.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can use virtualbox with a "seamless desktop" too because it also support rdesktop.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=388220&highlight=virtualbox+rdesktop - unrealmp3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I definitely prefer CrossOver Office.
- DAaaMan64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmmm... That sounds cool, maybe I will have to think of a windows program I might actually need so I could try this out. Thanks :)
- calvmari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Once you set this up remotely for him (which you can), software applications open at the click of a button.I know this because I have it setup that way.
- democracysucks, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I'm wondering about that sort of thing. I'd assume not, but I'll ask anyway:
Can Qemu or similar projects play Windows games? I boot into Windows every night just for Call of Duty 2, then boot back into Ubuntu when I'm done. - Aklblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For those of you looking for a good OS to try, I found "TinyXP" works really well and is very responsive using QEMU on Feisty.,.
- Omeganon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using seamlessrdp for several months now and while it is indeed useful, it's not quite seamless =) The main problem is that when there are multiple overlapping windows open it often has difficulty determining which is on top and you end up with a foreground window of a particular size with a background windows' contents within it. The background window has to be minimized, or, if it's even partially visible, you have to click the title bar of the foreground application. This may need to be done several times while using that window.
- Karmalary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can set up shared folders with VirtualBox, but the virtual hard disks are actually files. I wish there was a way to pre-format and partition them, but that seems to be missing. Other than that VirtualBox seems a fine product. My Mom even uses it.
- generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Convert_Physical_Windows_Systems_Into_Virtual_Machines_To_Be_Run_On_Linux
Seems to be what you want, convert a physical hard drive to a virtual machine (in this case, a VMWare image). Qemu can read vmware images - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad nothing out there allows me to use my windows partition directly rather than having to create a file and using that as a partition.
- m0bilitee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's important to note that the Seamless Desktop DLL you put in your guest could be anywhere. It could be on a remote Windows machine that is NOT virtual. You could have a seemless desktop app without virtualization.
- thtroyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good deal. I hadn't heard about that.
(Ancient topic, I know.) - Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like to see a tutorial based around the following:
I currently have a functional Windows partition and a functional linux install (Ubuntu).
In Ubuntu, how can I boot up the Windows partition in VMware or similar with the minimum of fuss.
Maybe it already can be easily done, but if so, let's see a simple guide to do it, rather than something so complex that it's easier to just boot into Windows. - nailer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi - I wrote the article beign digged.
While it uses QEmu in its examples, VMware or VirtualBox will work fine.
- Use host based networking on the VM rather than port forwarding
- When running rdesktop, connect to the IP of the VM rather than localhost. - sachmanb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I third the recommendations for virtualbox with rdesktop over qemu
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just finished setting this up, and while it's very nice, Qemu is just not as good as VirtualBox at emulating. When someone figures out why VirtualBox and SeamlessRDP don't get along, then this will be rockin, but for now, its not that functional.
- bitemedigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Battlefield 2 works just fine for me in Cedega (http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Battlefield_2)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1qemu has a Windows port
- lucianolev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try VMware Server, it boots fine my Windows partition here on Gentoo. However, you'll have to search the web for a guide with the necessary hacks...
Good luck. - nailer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi, I wrote the article everyone's digging, and pasted it on the front page earlier for 2000 diggs (its a dupe, but I don't care, more eyes are better).
Anyway, you can do what you want, you just have to install the ntoskrnl.dll and hal.dll for the VMWare CPU, as additoonal options in Windows boot.ini, and create a new Hardware profile for the vmware hardware.

People are negative because it's much easier to make yourself feel smart by tearing other people down. If you pick at anything long enough you will find flaws, it usually doesn't take much effort. Then you can point out the flaws and act like 'Oh, these people are such morons they think/did/do/said this'.
And the other part about Parrellels is that It's related to Apple and people are brainwashed to think that Apple is innovative.
Stuff like:
Apple started the PC revolution, were in reality other computers like the commodore 64 FAR FAR outsold Apple and introduced many more people to computers.
Or the Apple started the GUI and Microsoft ripped it off of them, when in fact both Apple and Microsoft got their basic GUI design (file/folders/pointer/menus/nested windows/menus/etc) from Xerox.
That there is this big Apple vs Microsoft thing going on, when in fact it's mostly for show nowadays. Microsoft could destroy Apple very easily by doing something like pull MS Office support. Microsoft is by far is the largest Apple application developer outside of Apple itself. etc etc.
Or that Microsoft is evil DRM, while liberals use Apples. Were in fact Apple is the biggest supporter of DRM and makes far more money off of that then Microsoft. Also Apple's licensing of OS X is MUCH more restrictive then anything Microsoft is doing with Vista, but people say weird stuff like they are pissed off at the MS EULA so they are going to buy a Mac.
Another thing is Bootcamp, were Linux users were successfully dual booting for decades, but all of a sudden you have bootcamp and Apple is run by geniuses for figuring that out were in fact it's about the most boring thing you could possibly come up with. - stanco123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I will go for crossover
