- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20So now the argument is shifting from "they won't ever sell...Linux users are too cheap" to "oh, well, fanboys must just be buying them".
Wonder how long it's going to take you to come to the realization that it's because there IS a demand for Linux desktop systems.
But, by all means....keep revising your "theories". - twtmc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17"Nobody is ever going to need a PERSONAL computer"
"Who's going to ever use a monitor?"
"People won't use something called a 'mouse'. The name is just too silly"
"Color monitors? Those are just a fad."
"There is no want or need for CDs. Tapes are perfectly fine."
"Who would really want to connect their computer to other computers? That's just needless."
"Laser mice are a waste of time. Our ball mice work just fine."
"LCD and Plasma will never catch on, CRT is still good."
"Linux users are too cheap. There is no market for linux."
"Oh, the good linux sales are just because of the fanboys, they will die out eventually." - superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I wonder if we'll see Ubuntu at Best Buy side by side with vista... i cant imagine the horror of trying to get answers from the employees. oh my goodness, geek squad will explode
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -12/+23For several months, there have been various clues that suggest that H-P is still testing Linux to see if the market will accept it. Rest assured that they also watch Dell like an eagle on this one, which is possibly why Dell keeps the sales figures secret. Here are some articles that support this:

http://www.techspot.com/news/24571-hp-considering-factoryloaded-linux-desktops-and-notebooks.html - straylight51, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I wonder if hp will offer these ubuntu computers at lower prices then there normal ones.
- opencoder, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I doubt that. The sales will probly steady out, but I don't think that they will disappear entirely.
- jonesin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The guy writes that they're going to be offering them within the next few weeks, and as proof links to an ubuntuforums thread that nobody's even posted in for half a year. How does that prove that they're about to roll it out in the next few weeks?
- rajputwarrior, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5hp has to learn how to make pcs... what the hell is upside down ATX (no it's no BTX, it's literally upside down ATX and it makes it stupid to add components to their pc's)

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Could it be because the consumer doesn't want Vista with all the DRM crap and everyone has been burned by WGA....Could it be that people are tired of MS products sucking at security? Could is possibly be that people actually want to WORK? Na...it's just a fad...it'll pass.
- hatch151990, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think it would be a really bad time to start offering multiple Linux distributions, as it is most people are confused by this new option, when you start offering hundreds of more options people just get overwhelmed and will go with what they know(windows). I have no doubt that if this mainstream Linux desktop movement gains momentum and more people start learning about it, Dell, Hp?, and anyone else who wants to get into the *nix game will start to offer more options but until then, it simply isnt the right time. Linux has to be introduced into the mainstream market slowly, not all at once.
- LeeSoong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4HP - "Bring it On!"
- eliasg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5HP *is* pretty big on *nix stuff, so I don't see this being too difficult to implement. They should have a better time doing it than Dell, which has been Wintel-only for almost forever.
- Darkhacker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Free software refers to the freedom of the users, not price.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Or it could lead to better support by both hardware and software companies.
Just sayin'. Plus, just because Ubuntu is becoming popular doesn't mean that the kernel itself will be less useful or dumbed down. - MBro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hopefully they'll release some with smaller screens. I hate large laptops.
- Niomi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4HP already sells laptops with Ubuntu to Europe and Africa.

- tarkam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I remember reading something about doing the Shrek renders on HP machines with linux. Here is the link right from HP:
http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2003/030529a.html - foopirata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Only problem is that their OEM BIOS _sucks_ with Linux - huge problems with APICs rendering the notebook almost useless.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3ok first of all I don't know if you've ever worked for a production company like dell. Rolling out something like Linux that is so different from Windows is not trivial. Especially on a production scale that Dell has done. With the amount of man hours and software changes they've done. they are committed to atleast breaking even. Businessmen don't make decisions off hand like that. If they've done it after so long there is a reason for it. it's not just some marketing ploy.
- airforceteacher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yes because nothing's better than only one distro. Give it time ... I'd have rather seen Fedora, but I'm happy to see anything out there. I may rebuild my Dell E1405 because I know that every component has an Ubuntu-ready driver or solution now.
- Tenoq, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Start selling them in Australia, dammit!
- UWake911, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Check out Zepto.com for laptops as they sell without the need to purchase an OS.
- shinda, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I would think that IF HP could get away with selling the PC's at the same price or maybe even a fraction lower, then they'd want to push Ubuntu because it helps increase there bottom line.
- nailer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2HPs DV2000 - whose case won best product design at this years Red Dot design awards, is already an Ubuntu Studio 100.

I own one of these - and they rock. - abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"And here, ladies and gentlemen, is a typical [Windows] fanboy. Vile specie indeed."
First off, your spelling isn't exactly "percisely" (sic) correct. Secondly, Linux may use the terminal a considerable amount - but so many things these days can be done with a GUI - much like Ubuntu establishes. Thirdly,"pretty secure" isn't exactly reassuring.
How long was Vista in development? How long is each new version of Ubuntu in development? I'm no security expert, but it certainly seems like Ubuntu has far fewer security problems than Vista. - durant125, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Just because Vista is more secure than other Windows, does not mean it is as secure as the root/user setup. Windows admin is still needed way to much which always creates more of a risk when using it. Linux console management emulates Windows control panel, you do not need to know 200 billion commands, but you always have that option.
- netkid91, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2HP has sold Linix-based CORPORATE workstations and servers for a while, albeit running RHEL...grr..
- Viakenny, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2here in Brazil, HP also sells PCs with Mandriva.
- Phocion55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Seriously....one day I'm sure you will submit something useful. Keep trying!
- greenmt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Anyone know how much a MS Windows license costs the PC makers? Costs us about $140. Anyone know how much the PC makers get for installing all that bloatware?
I think we need the EU to make a law that the OS and software have to be itemized on the bill, so we can see where the $ go. IF Windows cost the same for for HP and me, I think you see less of it and more options. - geekee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"Dell's initial success with Ubuntu"
Anyone have any real sales numbers on these things? - superyounan1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1the next release will come with fusion. whenever I have a friend over and they look at the desktop, they almost immediately ask "ooooooo this is vista???" I've learned to hold back my immediate smug sanctemonious replies of bashing windows and praising linux, afterall, if i kept praising linux, then all my friends might just switch to it, and I don't feel like becoming their personal tech-support whenever a terminal is needed
- chrono13, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That is what I meant. Poor wording, sorry.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"And here, ladies and gentlemen, is a typical Linux fanboy. Vile specie indeed."
Actually, more and more I'm moving to FreeBSD. I do quit like DSL, Fedora, Ubuntu, and SuSe though.
"People that want to work percisely picks Windows, and not Linux (to work with Linux u need to know 200000000000+ commands). And about security..what? Vista is pretty secure buddy."
You need not know a single command. 99% of everything you need to do is done in the GUI. Vista isn't pretty secure, it's already had a number of serious flaws (ANI flaw, WGA flaw, and most malware will STILL run in Vista). Pretty secure just doesn't cut it anymore. - motang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now that will be cool, as seeing it in person is way different than online. Either way this is still at good thing if HP does start selling PCs with Ubuntu on them.
- tboutcher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2dugg you down by accident. +1
- DatuPuti, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2dugg. the more the merrier.
- shinda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Take a few live cd's stick em into the laptops and restart the comps, then take a pic
- SendDerek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow... thanks for that link. It answered all the questions I had about Linux on HP.
I have to ask one question though. How are the fans? Are they really quiet? On my Vaio VGN-FE550G, I never hear the fans. I can only hear them when I have my ear up close to it, and even then it's quiet. I have decided that this is a 'feature' that I can't live without after this notebook and so it would be nice to know how the HP DV#### sounds. I've been admiring their style. - Shadowman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I would like to see them offer a choice of Linux distributions. Linux is not one size fits all. I don't want to be told Windows is my only option but I don't want Ubuntu to be my only option either.
- durant125, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Besides you can always download the distro of your choice.
- fxfuji, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Crossing my fingers that HP decides to preload Ubuntu onto its Pavilion TX1000 series of laptops. If they offered the touchscreen version with Linux/WinXP dual boot, I'd get one right away! :)
- chandler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I really hope they do. I've never been a fan of Dell... How many Linux servers does Dell sell each year? And how much of that revenue returns to Open Source communities? At least HP makes that information more publicly accessible.
- celkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0If Ubuntu doesn't come with Compiz/Beryl/Fusion/whatever, the average user would probably go with Vista because it's all pretty and shiny.
- SanjoEel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Hehehe, everything is going according to plan. It's only a matter of time now before almost all PC makers at least offer Linux out of the box.
- straylight51, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yeah dude my spelling errors are there because im only 13
- netkid91, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1You are admitting that Linux isn't perfect either!
