There seems to be a lot more WIFI tools for Linux then OSX or Window$........ - mvent2, on 08/05/2008, -0/+25So how is this better than the myriad of other WiFi tools already available for Linux (title's horrible inaccuracy aside)?
- zarque, on 08/05/2008, -3/+25pretty cool app! only thing that was kind of sketchy was it asked for my root password, but im sure its legit.
- mike215, on 08/05/2008, -1/+18thats a given, any network config tool is gonna require it unless you sudo it
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+16aircrack and kismet are my favorite wifi software
- daftman, on 08/05/2008, -3/+16TOOLS, not drivers.
- Systembomber, on 08/06/2008, -0/+13Got excited for a moment there. Thought it was to do with wireless drivers...
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -1/+13i think he meant M$
lololoool see what i did there? - Bartboy919, on 08/05/2008, -10/+21Window$? Seriously? Are you 5 years old?
- DeathGod321, on 08/06/2008, -1/+9Yeah, I bet Micro$haft would have somethign to say about that.
- bnajbert, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8I'm really getting tired of the "It's all Linux' fault that my wifi doesn't work" comments, wake up people..... its the manufacturers not Linux that are screwin the pooch when it comes to support. If the manufacturer doesn't make a compatible driver how is that Linux fault?
- Junior612, on 08/06/2008, -0/+6Your mother not putting out.
Now stop trolling, bitch. - migshark, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5Neat. I've been using an Eeepc with a wifi spectrum analyser, but it's a pain getting some decent diagnostic freeware to use them to their full potential. FBI aren't fond of these things either, but everyone knows they're sissies.
- gronne, on 08/05/2008, -9/+13That's because people don't have nearly as much trouble configurng wifi on OSX and Windows.
- daftman, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4Peopel don't use wifi tools to configure wifi for their laptop/desktop
These tools are more for sniffing, hacking etc - Vadi0, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Open source right away, and a gDesklet... woah. Interesting move.
- Balla79, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3Agree, bu they wouldn't even have to make any drivers. Releasing the API for their hardware, would be plenty.
- czarr, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2kismet and wireshark are similar in some respects, aircrack is quite different than both.
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2clearly don't upset the fanboys
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -1/+3Unisux user actually. Also just because you use and test aircrack does not mean you crack your neighbors wifi. And kismet is a wifi swiss army knife, It can use it to detect WAPs, packet sniffing and IDS too.
- voyvf, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Took five seconds to get mine (Belkin F5D7010 Wireless G) to work.
This isn't a dig at Linux, but from my experience the more things change, the more they stay the same: research, then buy. - spydon, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2As the info says you only have to give root pass to get better scanning results.
"7. Enter your super-user password (for better scanning results) or press cancel" - cantormath, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Linux:
We Invented wireless diagnostic tools. They ported SOME of the good tools to windows for the forensic point-click engineers who use windows, but face it, you can't touch linux wifi tools with a stick. - oobuntu, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2I disagree. They are releasing the source too, so the good bits can be stripped out and put into individual plasmoids/gdesklets (if they aren't already - the screenshot was of the vista version).
As it stands i wouldn't use it, but if there were bitesize plasmoids e.g. wifi radar then i would use these. - michaelz92, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Me too. Me too.
I feel like thats the thing really holding me back from using linux all the time. Ndiswrapper sucks imo. - iofthestorm, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2Link to wifi plasmoid please? I've been trying to install KDE4 and get some plasmoids set up but I can't find any for some reason.
- CCmachined, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1buy a COMPATIBLE card ...
- benplaut, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Maybe his S key is broken?
Maybe he has no left ring finger? - wavesmachine, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1I wish I didn't have to download the Yahoo Widget Framework to be able to use this. :(
Are there and good wifi monitors I can get, for OSX, that don't need YWF? - mrsteveman1, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1You mean advanced diagnosis and config tools? There are a bunch for Windows, including advanced commercial hardware for the purpose. The AirPcap people seem to write some kind of wifi software, and the wi-spy people do too, but that hardware works with kismet and linux in general as well.
- Fryth, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2Did the submitters read TFA? This is not exciting in the least. It's just some piece of software being ported to Linux... The equivalent functionality exists in Kismet, and others...
- KevinJim, on 08/06/2008, -2/+3Cool but way below Knetworkmanager and the sweet Wi-Fi plasmoid on my Desktop.
- nycthbris, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Window$? Becau$e it$ ***** hilariou$! That$ why!
- int19h, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1We already have "iwlist wlan0 scanning", but the radar looks cool-ish.
"Wavemon" is a great utility, btw. (And yes, the regular GUI tools work fine). - Junior612, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1start here: http://www.macupdate.com/search.php?keywords=wifi& ...
and here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_s ... - masfenix, on 08/06/2008, -4/+4Great, but still dosnt defeat the fact that you have to spent 20 hours trying to get your network adapter working. (ofcourse for my laptop)
- michaelz92, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1Yeah, but then what do you do when you have an integrated wireless adapter in the laptop? carry around an external one?
I guess if you know you're going to use linux while you're buying, then everything goes smoothly, but if you want to use existing hardware, it might be a hassle. - UncleTimmy, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1Finally! This should be a useful one..
- neko, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0D-Link G650, plugged it in, bam, wifi.
- courtjester555, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to software - Killerah, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Sweetness! I've been waiting for a decent gui WiFi manager for a while.
- mike215, on 08/05/2008, -1/+1aircrack-ng or kismet with wireshark can do the same thing
- flarn2006, on 08/06/2008, -4/+2Great, or at least it would be, if you could find the damn drivers!
- Awspire, on 08/06/2008, -7/+1Damn, you linsux users don't even want to pay for internet. Leeches, the lot of ya.
- RuyGuy, on 08/06/2008, -10/+4Welcome to 1999.
- Managua8Green, on 08/05/2008, -8/+1There's so many comments, I don't know where to start!
- johndavidjack, on 08/06/2008, -8/+1Buried for lack of opensolaris support...
Also buried because, I hate wifi... - PatrickFisher, on 08/06/2008, -10/+2Wait a second... you mean wireless even WORKS on linux? Dear god, whatever are the trolls going to bitch about now?
- leerayIG88, on 08/05/2008, -12/+2SEX, not porn.
