- woohoo, on 01/14/2009, -1/+90I am a Linux user, and I think that those who claim all over the place that "Linux will kill Windows" or "Windows will kill Linux", are either romantics, or they are out of touch with reality, to say the least.
The best bet - I think - is to say that Linux will gain share in the installation numbers (in the foreseeable future). - kd420, on 01/14/2009, -15/+84It's pretty hard to give up Linux once you get used to it for a while. It has been better than Windows for visual appeal, in my opinion, since Compiz Fusion became standard in distros. In terms of speed and stability, there are usually initial configuration problems, but once you iron them out it's pretty smooth and way more resource friendly than Windows. CLI is a power-users dream come true since it makes batching and controlling your machine extremely fast (I look at is a manual vs.automatic transmission).
The one place where MS dominates is games, and getting hardware companies to support them. They are resting on the monopoly they had (or still have, depending on how you see it). Windows will never kill Linux because Linux is better than Windows in a lot of ways.
Right now, if I had to pay for an OS, I would take Linux over Windows, just like I would pay for Firefox over IE. Now add to that the knowledge that you'll NEVER have to pay, and rarely will have to accept a license to use software, and you'll see why Linux will only get stronger as time goes on. - charlesray, on 01/15/2009, -6/+49Someone thought Windows was going to kill off Linux?
Are they retarded? - LiquidSpark, on 01/14/2009, -0/+24I completely agree. I'm not a linux fan but all of this talk about "this OS is gonna kill that one" is absurd. I think both will still be alive and strong in 10 years.
- hamobu, on 01/15/2009, -1/+24LInux users and Mac users are NOT banding together. If Microsoft is George W Bush, than Apple is Robert Mugabe. Yeah Robert Mugabe is against Bush, but WTF! He is a tyrant! Microsoft is a beacon of freedom when compared to Apple.
- evil-doer, on 01/15/2009, -10/+33how can you kill that which has no life?

We have a long, long time before open-source unix OSes either take over or disappear. And I'd put my money on them taking over rather than disappearing. Most likely though? Some company like Microsoft or Google will find a good way to make money off of them, as Apple did with BSD. - TouchingWood, on 01/14/2009, -1/+20Use the one you're comfortable with.
I still go with the OS that came with my Commodore 64,.
It rocks. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+19Window 7 will kill vista.
- chaoswings, on 01/15/2009, -2/+20If you want linux to be mainstream here are a few things that need to be done:
1) Advertise, most people don't even know linux exists
2) Stop with the obscure naming of applications. When I began to use linux this confused me the most. I never knew what to use.
3) You will have to begin to port over major applications such as photoshop (this is not linux's fault but it is holding people back)
4) The biggest hurdle is finding someone to help you when things go wrong. The average person does not have enough common sense or even the ability to go to a forum for support and accurately describe the problem. Most people go to the local computer store. Quite often they won't take linux because they have dumb-as-dirt part-timers that know only slightly more then the average person. - Murdats, on 01/15/2009, -1/+19yes, yes they are.
- Animal, on 01/15/2009, -1/+17I'm glad someone pointed this out. In terms of hardware/software 'freedom' Mac OS and Linux are on completely opposite sides of the spectrum.
- buddyw, on 01/15/2009, -1/+16What's your number?
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -2/+17Documented number of cases of software committing homicide against other software: 0.
- ileftfark, on 01/14/2009, -0/+15Why do these articles (not this exact one, but the ones it addresses) assume that people only use one OS? The majority of Linux users I know (including myself) have at least one other operating system that they use for this or that. Until there arises a single OS that offers the best features of each OS, savvy users are going to use the best tool for the job they are doing, and that often means multi-booting or running VMs. I pretty much stay with Linux for web browsing, email, etc (it's fast, stable, and more secure than Windows). But there are some robust editing apps on OS X (not that I'm a professional by any means), and my printer and cell phone don't play nice with Linux, so I keep Windows around for them (and a few games too). I don't think we're going to see Mac, Windows, or Linux go away anytime soon, but I do think we will see a trend of people (especially younger ones) being proficient in more than one OS, which is hardly the outcome these sensationalist articles predict.
- Wreckage, on 01/15/2009, -9/+21As long as it kills off Vista.
- manacit2, on 01/15/2009, -4/+16Why do people care so much about what will "kill" what. As a linux user I personally could not give less of a ***** what happens, I use linux because I like it, my parents use Windows because they like it, my neighbor uses a mac because she likes it, WHY DO PEOPLE CARE. A lot of stupid fanboys give people on both ends a bad name, as long as what you use works for you, I'm happy.
If Windows 3.11 (for workgroups!) works for you, then all the better, not me or anyone else should judge you because of it. - ptFoe, on 01/15/2009, -4/+15You can't kill of Linux because of the openness of Open Source.
- PityDaFool, on 01/15/2009, -8/+19Did anyone suggest it would?
- dandonia, on 01/15/2009, -0/+10The guy was right - it will be on a Mac or PC- nothing stopping you running linux on either though.
- one1plus1one, on 01/15/2009, -2/+12Well in some ways I think operating systems are like nationhood.
If you are born into a nation you have non-rational emotional ties to it.
I was born into microsoft -- writing DOS-batch commands when I was 9 years old back in the early 80's. Windows feels like "home" in a strange way I can't describe.
However, I was actually experimenting with Ubuntu on my home network the last several days. I managed to join it to the wireless windows work-group that I set up, and Ubuntu did many things automatically (or through the GUI) that I was worried I would have do through some obscure Unix commands. So I was impressed. - NinjaGod, on 01/15/2009, -0/+9I think it's meant to.
- strangewill, on 01/15/2009, -0/+8Running Windows 7 virtually on my Ubuntu Server...
- mithrasinvictus, on 01/15/2009, -4/+12Possibly, but they were definitely employed by microsoft.

Very concise explanation of why linux will never go mainstream. Well done. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -4/+11http://jobsearch.monster.com/Search.aspx?brd=1& ...
Feel free to go ***** yourself at any time. - dalittle, on 01/15/2009, -8/+15windows 7 may not kill off Linux, but I heard about this windows mohave and it is suppose to be fantastic!
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -8/+14Once you get used to linux you see that it's actually easier than windows. Upgrades are a no brainer and the installation of packages is a piece of cake.
- RobotBuddha, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6@one1plus1one
I like the nation analogy. Just shed a tear for those of us who were raised in the land of commodore. We have no home. - Stonekeeper, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6"If you want linux to be mainstream"
Who said anything about that? If vendors want to sell linux, let them sell it. They can deal with the problems. I personally don't give two hoots. The only thing that would bother me is someone taking away my RIGHT to use it in whatever state it's in. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6 And Windows 7 wants to kill XP as well.
- noisymime, on 01/15/2009, -2/+7Its great that you love Windows, I have no problem with that, but everyone sees advantages in different things. I could quite easily say that Windows *still* doesn't have virtual desktop support, linux has had that for about 18 years. I could never go back to just working on a single desktop now. I could also not go back to living without a central software repository for updates etc.
Both operating systems have their strengths and weaknesses and once you've used either for a while, the thought of losing those strengths is enough to turn you off.
There's also technical issues for both sides. Eg Vista on my laptop won't do Aero, yet compiz works great on it.
If you try to change operating systems, don't expect that everything will be the same, that's the point. - Twinnie, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5That guy's a ***** idiot. First of all he says "Nuff said" which is grounds for instant burial from me. Second of all he sounds like one of the most biased bloggers I've read from in a while. For example, further down the page he has some link about XP users not liking 7 and I assumed he was going to cite some rare community bashing of 7 but I click on it anyway and it's another stupid article written by himself listing reasons why XP users should hate 7. One of his reasons is that stuff has moved between versions and that will confuse people, like hundreds of different distros and snappy titles like 'Synaptic Packet Manager' won't. then he lists a bunch of useful features that people might actually use like indexing and DVD creation and bitches about them decreasing performance purely because of their existence.
At least he admits to being biased. - mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5Zombies?
- mpwoodruff, on 01/15/2009, -3/+8Do these articles really need to be submitted to digg constantly, let alone written? Who cares? Get over it fanboys!
- matthewinDRO, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5I called your number and some guy named bruce answered?
- Elranzer, on 01/15/2009, -2/+7If Linux didn't exist, who would Microsoft copy features from for their new releases? Apple? HAHAHA, they're all dried up, too.
- diemunkiesdie, on 01/15/2009, -2/+7RTFA. As the author stated (and provided a link to), there was a recent article about Windows 7 killing off Linux.
- eviltandem, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5I havent' had to install a driver in Linux in years now. The secret is to stay away from the crappy hardware manufacturers.
I have several computers that all install Ubuntu and work out of the box. The same machines running windows ALL required me running around finding drivers.
Games could be better, but many of the games I play work with wine perfectly well. Even so, a simple reboot can bring up Windows.
That it plays games is not even on my list of features for work PC's... Far more important to me is the "it doesn't install virus's automatically" feature.
Call me when using Windows doesnt' require a significant investment of time and money just to keep running smoothly. - SpectralSounds, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5Haven't used Linux in about 8 years, but I can say that I am really enjoying the Win 7 Beta. Although I have run into a few interesting bugs already. If they get them ironed out, I might actually pay for Win 7.
- toledojon, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Who cares? When you get down to it, there's a reason that there are three dominant OS's: they're all good. Some have strengths in one area, others in another. Linux = good. Windows = good. Mac = good. They're like pants, it just depends which one fits you the best... some are too constrictive and chaff a lot, others are so large you end up bare-ass trippin over yourself... Even I don't know what I'm talkin about now.
- mithrasinvictus, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5A new version of (k)ubuntu is coming out in april. And most wireless issues are either solved or close to being solved.

and that is from a year ago... Linux has evolved that much again in the last year... windows is still trying to find a way to trick you into paying for Windows 7 instead of asking why they never bothered to finish Vista. - carl0ski, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5I see the consoles kill PC games soon anyway, no real need to use Windows any more, Games is not the excuse it once was, lots of Console exclusives, delayed PC releases, and heavy game piracy on PC is contributing to the easing weight of games on Linux restriction
- fluxion, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5what's funny is that Windows 7 IS the real-life incarnation of Mojave. Ive been running the beta for a couple days now....its a tweaked Vista...but its still Vista. Vista with positive hype rather than negative. (with no financial mercy for those that forked up for Vista when it came out only like 2 years ago)
i hope Windows 7 is successful, i really do. i dont wanna see a great employer like microsoft go down in flames.
but there's nothing revolutionary here. its basically a Vista service pack with a facelift. its not gonna kill anything any harder than Vista would. - Charklii, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4"Use a live-cd or wubi to test linux on your system risk free." Wow? I didn't imagine the preview would let you do that? I thought it was just playing around with some default applications o_O I will have to make note of that! Thank you.
Otherwise a wired connection makes sense, I can see how that'd work too - so if all else fails that's worth trying.
And thanks both for your replies and willingness to offer some tips :D Much appreciated.. makes Digg worthwhile :p -
