- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -9/+69Linux is funny because not only is it better than Windows, it's free.
- DestroyFascism, on 10/02/2008, -0/+56Good to see that people are getting a good return on investments.
IBM recouping 1 Billion in 12 Months or thereabouts is amazing.
It will be great when hardware makers really take advantage of the market potential. - anarchist101, on 10/01/2008, -0/+33With this much peer review, I would hope so too. Way to many knowledgeable eyes watching.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/02/2008, -5/+36OK, so 72% of kernel developers are paid programmers backed by major corporations. That doesn't mean they don't live in their parents' basements.
- dsn0wman, on 10/02/2008, -1/+25IBM is selling servers... really expensive servers! The Linux ones are way cheaper than the UNIX ones but still pretty expensive. That's how they turned a quick profit. Of course you don't know how many UNIX sales they lost due to customers switching to their Linux platforms.
- Vadi0, on 10/02/2008, -1/+21I wonder what business model was IBM using. It's great that they made such a quick profit, but afaik, Canonical still isn't even breaking even on Ubuntu & co.
- santasing, on 10/02/2008, -1/+16What is it about pro-Linux stories that make the morons fly out of the woodworks.
- Tenoq, on 10/03/2008, -0/+12Can't blame them - perhaps the paid programmers are the only ones smart enough not to take one of those dodgy housing loans that has the US in so much trouble now. No, you cannot afford a $400,000 on $40k a year. :p
- saranagati, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12I used to live in a bedroom in my parents house. I would have been stoked if we had a basement, an entire floor to myself...
- sirhomer, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12Hey! It saves on rent you insensitive clod.
- felixleighton, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12Digg mentality: I SAW CORPORATE AMERICA! LETS TROLL IT!
- Dracusis, on 10/02/2008, -1/+12you aint got root
- javaroast, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10To expand on dsn0wman IBM is selling software, servers and services. Server sales also beget sales of storage, consulting, backup, management, etc, etc, etc. The big difference is IBM is beyond solidly entrenched in the enterprise and Canonical is still trying to get a foothold.
- santasing, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10Stupid troll is a stupid troll.
- latrosicarius, on 10/02/2008, -1/+10No, make windoze compatible with Linux.
- gigitrix, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9who cares. If it's free as in freedom, and it works well, the extra investment can only be beneficial. And the fact is that a bedroom coder can still make a critical change if they have/want to.
- inactive, on 10/02/2008, -3/+12It's got a much more competent set of tools (the vanilla UNIX apps along with GNU's tools), a package manager that makes installing software on large amount of systems extremely easy and quick, the ability to configure things exactly to your needs, a far superior security model (especially when you factor in SElinux), a more well organized file structure, a very versatile firewall, and a much more flexible system in general.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/02/2008, -2/+10That's like saying make hybrid cars compatible with steam engines. Idiot.
- cantormath, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8Hackers.......maybe, but these hackers are smarter then you.......so maybe they are making a good point.
- ChayD, on 10/02/2008, -1/+8Drops box labelled "Wine" on the desk
*THUD!*
"There you go..."
Or, if you want it real easy, buy a copy of CrossOver which is based on Wine, but friendlier. - 4321234, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7It's paid developers writing code for the good of themselves and the companies they work for. It being for the good of the world is a side benefit.
- Tenoq, on 10/02/2008, -1/+7err.... KERNEL development?
Canonical isn't writing the kernel. - duckyinc, on 10/02/2008, -7/+13Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols is one of those unwashed, unemployed hackers living in their parents' basements.
- raynevandunem, on 10/02/2008, -1/+7Um, why would they give back to a kernel that they don't use?
Apple uses
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XNU
which is part of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_%28operating_s ...
which is the base of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X
Nope, no Linux, no GNU, no GPL. Just a bit of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeBSD and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mach_%28kernel%29 (which now forms part of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Hurd through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Mach ). - inactive, on 10/01/2008, -15/+21It's the truth. But it's open source, so nothing malicious is going on here, or at least, that's what I'd like to think.
- Hobo97, on 10/02/2008, -5/+11Make unified sound system that works and I'll believe you. Which is not to say I don't use linux everyday and vastly prefer development on it, but there are still some areas that Linux remains inferior. And if we forget to acknowledge that, those areas will remain broken.
- akoma1blog, on 10/02/2008, -3/+8I dugg down and I don't care what you say. When you know what is linux you may dugg down your self too.
- tehbored, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5I don't care who writes it, I use it because it's free and often better than commercial software.
- lordmetroid, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6Lost sales, umm, if they hadn't been selling Linux servers someone else would. Is that so hard to figure out?
- DickBreath, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Wow. So Open Source and Linux are all about... Microsoft.
Not about Freedom?
(And that included corporate interests wanting freedom. Cooperate on interface, compete on implementation.)
I'd be interested on your opinion of non-Linux Open Source projects. FireFox. OpenOffice.org. GIMP. Inkscape. Eclipse. Do you really believe the motive is all about Microsoft?
Personally, I don't care what Microsoft does. I just want Free and Open Source Software. (FOSS) - tehchicken, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6Canada*, I fixed it for you.
- KloroFormd, on 10/02/2008, -1/+6Windows isn't even compatible with Windows. Just look at Vista.
- zippy757, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5Actually, they never said they made a $1B profit, they said they recovered their $1b...that's very different...
- Canadaa, on 10/02/2008, -2/+6thechicken* - likewise ;)
also lol @ being dugg down - Vodd9, on 10/02/2008, -2/+6"While I don't an exact date for when Linux transformed from being written mainly by enthusiasts to when it was being written mostly by paid developers"
I wonder if he also already accidently a coca-cola bottle. - zippy757, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5My linux is compatible with both my windows and doors.....problem solved.
- chamberlanderic, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5yeah but only 1 % of the people know how to tweek it so that is why they are sticking to windows.
- tech42er, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4OSX isn't based on Linux; it's based on UNIX.
- dialectical, on 10/02/2008, -2/+6Remember in the 80s when the economic boogey man was the Japanese and how they think together to benefit all parties? It looks like American business has started to wake up to that fact that Linux (and the rest of the FOSS movement) is a win / win for everyone. The only thing they needed was a common enemy...
New slogan for the Penguin.
Linux: Keiretsu, American Style. - Tenoq, on 10/02/2008, -3/+7Vista's unified sound system doesn't work... so that's a big call. I still don't have any positional audio support for my soundcard in DX9 or earlier games... and I'll NEVER have 64-bit support.
I'm sorry, but Linux ***** over the current Windows for my soundcard. XP on the other hand... that was fine. :p - saranagati, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3@psyjoniz
It's not really as simple as saying, well my operating system should be able to run windows binaries so i'll design it to. Basically you can design your kernel to execute data in what ever fashion you can imagine. Unfortunately I can't guess at what fashion microsoft decided to use for windows and they won't release that info. What you can do is try and reverse engineer these binaries and create a program to run them (more or less what wine and crossover do). What makes it really complicated though is that every windows program out there probably doesn't use all of windows system calls in every way they could be used. So if you reverse engineered 200 binaries, you still most likely wouldn't be able to run 99% of the binaries. (to summarize, 1001110011 doesn't necessarily mean the same thing to windows that it does linux). Another problem is microsoft adds and occasionally removes some of its functionality between versions so you're constantly trying to play catch up.
As far as the file formats go with programs like office, it's pretty much the same thing. Open/Star office used to really try and keep on top of staying compatible with MS Office however MS took some underhanded tactics to make it much more difficult for other programs to load the MS Office documents. So Open Office decided to create an Open Document Standard which nearly everyone was ok with except for microsoft. At that point microsoft made it even more difficult for others to open their documents with the whole .docx type files.
So basically if you want to blame anyone, blame microsoft for not wanting to allow any competition. - Angostura, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4Actually, Linux is just the kernel. The whole thing is GNU/Linux.
Oh my god, I'm channelling Stallman. - Angostura, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Well, based on Mach and FreeBSD. You can download the open source free core operating system here: http://developer.apple.com/opensource/index.html
As well as get the skinny on all the other open source projects. - aywwts4, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3I don't know why you are getting dugg down so much, Google does use a lot of open source, but when they develop something in house, such as their Google File System, which would be a killer file system for large servers, its closed source and proprietary. That's their choice and that's fine. But IBM is the patron saint of the OSS world, not Google.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3Thats why standards are a good thing it wont matter if the image editor your using is photoshop on windows, or gimp on kubuntu, if you are using a image format that works on both, you will be on a much better boat then trying to view a file that only works in one program.
- CrushThemTorg, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3I'd like to start a slow clap.
- aoou4444, on 10/02/2008, -2/+5"Any time spent fannying around with the OS (which it seems is all Linux fans do) is wasted time."
How is that wasted time? If I spend x time "fannying around with the OS" in order to save myself 10x time over the next year, that sounds like time well spent to me. Fortunately I can do that with Linux.
I'm not saying Linux is for everyone in it's current state but it certainly is far superior in productivity, time saved, etc. for many of us that will take the time to learn how to use it in order to save time later. Remember there was a time when people didn't know how to use Windows. They do now; inertia is a hard thing to stop when it comes to technology. - MikeFromAmerica, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3"analogy is rather stupid."
Fair enough. I was just going for laughs. Not trying to win a debate.
However, compatibility is kind of subjective. I don't think it would be a good idea to try to make Linux binary compatible with Window (i.e., be able to run Windows apps out-of-the-box) because that would necessitate a lot of extra baggage that the majority of Linux users don't want--not to mention exposing Linux to legacy bugs and security issues. If you need binary compatibility, there are various virtualization and emulation options.
If you just want to be view, edit, and exchange the same types of files and data, I'm all for that. The only times that Linux isn't compatible in this way is when you're dealing with Windows-only proprietary programs and file formats. You can't really blame Linux for that. Complain to Microsoft or whoever the closed-source application provider is. - howea, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Heh, a Notes survivor.
Yes the email client is crap but the databases/apps make up for it.
Anyways, if you use email more than 30 mins a day (if your job isn't primarily doing email) then you job/company is crap. I got mega-filters that chuck all the broadcast crap in the junk folder. - GavinZac, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2...
You either have no idea what you're talking about, or you've just successfully trolled me. Either way, stfu. -
