1) EasyUbuntu is... easy, while Automatix is _slightly_ more difficult to use (read: grandma won't get it), but provides more flexibility.
2) Neither will be included in any Ubuntu distro, for copyright reasons.
3) This has been dugg to death before.
That was my effort to avoid 40 useless comments, but I know the people who submit those comments generally skip down to the box, anyway. - Renolc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Yes, checking a little box is _much_ more difficult than finding, burning, and installing a whole new OS. -.-'
- jacobmp92, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20This makes me miss the "old news" bury option.
- nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Not unless Videolan can now install graphics drivers and manage archives.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16It's pretty good, I have used it before. But I prefer AutoMatix.
- steelmaverick, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Well, I havent seen it, so its new to me!
- flag564, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17"3) This has been dugg to death before."
Well yeah, but you have to admit that this is the most common issue for new Ubuntu users, and having this show up regularly is very helpful. - nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's easy but messy.
- Applemacmad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I used it in Ubuntu on my PPC Computer, and it killed X because there are no 3D drivers for Ati on PPC
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9steelmaverick: "Well, I havent seen it, so its new to me!"
So we should repost all the news on digg that you haven't read yet? - flag564, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Using Automatix and EasyUbuntu makes things quick and easy, but I have to STRONGLY suggest that you take it into your own hands to do these things yourself. If you want to learn about your system, then installing things such as current java, video drivers, flash, fonts, etc..."
Using that logic, I should go out and learn how to install a car radio, change my alternator, and put spinning rims on my car.
I dont have time to do all of this stuff "by hand". What the heck is the point of me getting a computer just to spend hours at command prompts? This thing is supposed to do work for me, not the other way around. Yeah, i can get some geek points, but when I adjust those points for inflation it comes to about a big waste of free time. - anjinash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6While setting those things up manually IS a great way to learn it, not everybody WANTS to learn it. Some people just want to use their computers and don't give a squirt of piss for how it works as long as it does. Now you may be saying that those people shouldn't be using Linux to begin with, and perhaps there's some truth to that ... but if Linux wants to grow beyont cult status it will need to embrace those people.
Until Linux in general and Ubuntu in particular can create GUI tools for ALL installation and configuring a system, there will always be people who will avoid the CLI at ALL costs and thus stay away from Linux.
And I don't know about you, but when I set up computers for people I know who are willing to give Dapper a shot instead of their corrupted Win98 and ME installs, I'd rather just let Automatix do half the work for me than piddling around at the command prompt all night. - ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Here's the thing people: Why complain about how commonly this has been posted if it is still getting diggs now? If it made it to the front page, then apparently enough people care about it for it to be there.
There are new people to Linux, especially to Ubuntu, all the time. Stuff like this is incredibly helpful for them, in spite of the fact that you folks may be sick of hearing about it. - MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Last time I used EasyUbuntu it foobared some things on my system and really trashed up my apt sources file. Automatix seems to work better, howerver it is missing some stuff that Easy has. I wish they would merge and share some features.
- bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9No digg.
I've must of already dugg this story at least 10 times in the past. - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7EasyUbuntu is great. It does everything you need it to do without the chance of screwing up your install like Automatix does.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i had no idea playing Tux Racer at more than 3 frames per second was on the mind of the average linux user.
- chapium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I hit the digg down button by accident; however, VLC player is limited by what licensed codecs are on your system. This is particularly true in Linux/BSD.
- subgeniusd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@anjinash="not everybody WANTS to learn it. Some people just want to use their computers ".
I agree. Or would like learn CLI but do not have the time. I am convinced that the Linux community is bisected. One camp enjoys the cult status while ineffectually throwing rocks at the MS mountain just for fun.
Our camp seeks to seriously challenge MS and recognizes the obvious. To tap and penetrate the market you need to understand and satisfy the market. Lecturing potential converts how easy it is rather then asking and providing what they need is the recipe for failure. Which is after all the LinCultist actual intent. Failure. Right? - Noctem, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Welcome to 8 months ago!
- rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6tuxuser: WHY is your name "tuxuser" if you are just going to flame on linux?
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, if the entire world had access to all of your memories, it wouldn't be news.

Woah there, terminal? Just by mentioning that you've lost 75% of new linux users. - spyd4r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I perfer automatix as well.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5actually, automatix requires only 3 lines of input in the terminal.
easyubuntu requires one to download it, open a config file in the terminal, edit that config file, followed by another line of input into the terminal.
i think, clearly, automatix is a bit easier. also, Automatix 2 will come out soon, which is python based, meaning install will likely be even easier, and the gui will be better. oh yeah, easyubuntu installs only 16 packages, automatix installs 45 comparable packages (with xgl on the way!). - cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5wunch didnt say this is old news or dupe. He's just giving links to other similar digg stories, which is fine with me. After all, the comments made on those stories are pretty good (some of it, anyway).... Who knows perhaps you can benefit from them.
Dont digg him down, although with the day counts he probably meant it the other way.. I did exactly this once, without saying it's dupe or anything.... expecting some smart-asses to comment and say how much they dont care about whether or not it's dupe as long as it's new to them... which is cool because with the phenomenal digg growth rate it wouldnt be suprising to see similar stories promoted several times... perhaps we need a repromote feature for digg v4...
sorry guys i am just sick of those 'old news', 'dupe', bury nazis... some people are good intentioned ya know.. - Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@steelmaverick
Don't worry, if it's "news" about Ubuntu it will come around again. And again. And again. And again... - Renolc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"automatix installs 45 comparable packages (with xgl on the way!)."
Automatix Bleeder already has xgl/compiz. ;-)
sudo apt-get install automatixbleeder - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@spartan777
What are you talking about?
To install EasyUbuntu, you just download it, unpack it, execute the script. That's all doable in a graphical environment. The script opens a window with check-boxes, you mark what you want and it goes.
They only provide command line instructions on the site because that's the easiest way to accurately describe it. - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2easyubuntu does not support edgy eft yet, but automatix for edgy is in the works.
http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?title=Automatix2_for_%28X%29Ubuntu_6.10_i386 - slythfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have this program on my xubuntu box. However, the issue is, it doesn't load, and therefor doesn't work.
- modestmelody, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I completely agree that the new users SHOULD go through the documentation and do all that themselves. In fact, because Ubuntu is Debian based and requires you to do a lot of work to get those nasty, non-free codecs as opposed to other distros, I actually learned how to do most of what I know about Linux when I was initially setting up my install (several times I might add, because learning to modify my xorg.conf for dual screens with Twinview took forever). However, now that I have gone through the hassel, I love to use Automatix on a fresh install or when I am installing for a friend for the purpose of saving my ass time and showing new users Linux that wouldn't take the time to learn all that from the get go. I have the sense that most people would lose their fear of the CLI as they find new specific tasks they want to set up and do, and slowly would become familiar with their system. The documentation is there. But, anything that kills that initial hump a bit for new users is a good thing. Those who are going to take the time and learn Linux will do it with or without Automatix. Those who wouldn't, will never experience what Linux can be and will never care or have the desire to learn it as a result.
- hhcv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Digg should just implement a new feature - when a story has not been resubmitted for 8 months, it shoudl reappear on the front page - it's the equiv. of Slashback people!
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8If only there was some way to find articles that were on the front page before. That'd be great!
- Jagot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have to agree with those who prefer Automatix - I think it offers far more and for the times I couldn't be bothered to set up my Ubuntu installation myself, Automatix has certainly never messed it up for me.
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah. Most of the ones who game are just gonna play Quake 4 or UT. Or maybe wine some Half-Life 2.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Tried this, but Automatix is better. EasyUbuntu really screwed my system over.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2problem is that if they merged, easyubuntu wouldn't have anything to contribute. That is to say automatix already has and has done better everything that easyubuntu has done. the only exceptions in where easyubuntu has something automatix does not, is in support for ATI cards, which is in beta in automatix, and that wengo thing, which is useless if you already have skype (who's heard of wengo anyways?).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about making a repository instead, and then creating a script that adds the repository to /etc/apt/sources.list?
- antonbondar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1are you effin kiddin me?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ubuntu: It's the best thing to come out of Africa since Qat!
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2EasyUbuntu and AutoMatix are both ways to make sure new linux users are ignorant on how things are done. Beyond that, they are both buggy and wouldnt be needed if ubuntu had the right repos by default, which they dont (reminds me of aol's wall of flowers or garden gay 'internet')
- hootdoodie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wish there was a easy Ubuntu click to get the damn wireless to work on this laptop.
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Same thing happened to me on a Pentium 4 architecture.
- twljagflba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't Ubuntu already easy enough to use?
- shiria, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm... you know what I'd like? Instead of something that installs everything for you, I'd really like a list of the best plugins and such. I'd be perfectly happy to install it all myself, but I hate having to try all the different plugins out to see which one works best. A detailed
(And I'm lazy. Did I mention how little time I really have to set up all these things?? None. Which is one of the reasons why I like Ubuntu in the first place.)
Does someone have a list like this already? If so, I would greatly appreciate the link. I know of ubuntuguide, but I don't think it has all the codecs and stuff. - b.m.a.n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It worked great for me awhile ago, its great for beginners. Can be annoying.
- mlevin99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What could be very interesting, if Automatix and EasyUbuntu ARE ready for Ubuntu 6.10 release? Are they compatible with latest Beta, and will they recognize the new platform version? Upgrading from 5.04 to 5.10 to 6.06 was always delayed on my peesee by ensuring all the additional software I use is supported.
