- sishgupta, on 10/11/2007, -24/+197I saw this yesterday but didn't submit it to digg because it is truly awful.
- kweee, on 10/11/2007, -4/+145Okay, I ripped out all my windows. Now what's this Linux thing and how do I put them in these holes in my walls?
- Tunguska, on 10/11/2007, -12/+126I was hoping for the by-line... "Linux guyz get all teh chikz"
Then I remembered I haven't been laid since Ubuntu got its freek on. - techmonkey4u, on 10/11/2007, -4/+111Clever, yes, but I like to read faster than one word every 2 seconds. When will people learn that ................ is ................. so ............... annoying .............. ?
- chriskzoo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+87Funny, when I watched it I assumed that those little decrepit windows and attics were the places people using Ubuntu were living.
- brstilson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+73All this will do is annoy Best Buy employees with an endless stream of clueless customers asking for the Windows version of Linux.
- KielKilla, on 10/11/2007, -17/+65This commercial sucks. It was taking the same path as Apple where they think bashing the opponent will fix all their problems but really they should actually advertise the OS. Linux all ready knows it's better then windows and so do alot of other people. No need for ***** this low, I'm really disappointed...
- Nicksname1, on 10/11/2007, -12/+59Yeah but it wasn't good. Lets just be happy that Ubuntu is so ridiculously awesome that there's no need for advertising. It speaks for itself.

- mikeyaj86, on 10/11/2007, -4/+42That was disappointing.
- thcobbs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+37Nothing says classy film making like rotating a camera while zooming.
- straps, on 10/11/2007, -3/+34http://youtube.com/watch?v=xRa6uoE7HLw is the best Linux Commercial I've ever seen
- ClayDragon, on 10/11/2007, -8/+35Failed.
- SlvrEagle23, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Surely there are SOME people in the Linux community with a working education in marketing. I love Linux, but very few around me like it or, for that matter, even know what it is. I can't say I'm surprised though, because all the advertisement it gets seems to be catered to people who are already sold on it.
Take this ad...it makes some unfortunate assumptions about the audience at large:
- Everyone who is cool knows what Linux is already and only needs to hear the name to be excited,
- If you don't know what Linux is, you are too stupid to benefit from it, so we won't bother telling you,
- The freeness (as in beer) of the software isn't a huge point of appeal to the general consumer, and
- The freeness (as in freedom) of the software is a concept everyone understands, regardless of whether they even know what source code is at all.
In short, while I agree that most intruders "get in through Windows", that will keep being a problem as long as Linux's marketing efforts aren't down-to-earth at all. - nxtwrld, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20or they could advertise all the backdoors...
- Philluminati, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Microsoft's thoughts? "Closed Windows will lock you in"
- richardshelly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16user at electonics store: "look im not one for fancy stuff just give me the standard linux version. Whats "ubuntu"?! I. Just. Want. Linux. ....Now this will be windows xp compatible right?"
- trivialmaggot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16i'm sure it makes sense to anyone who already knows what linux is. anyone else won't know what the hell they just saw though.
- XTX7X, on 10/11/2007, -14/+27Completely pointless and stupid. Those who can't secure Linux properly are just as vulnerable to intruders (not viruses, mind) as those running Windows. I would have loved to see a 30 second clip advertising the features instead of just saying "BWAHAHAA, YOUR OS SUCKS" and then providing them word a word, "Linux", while they probably don't even know what it means.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17wow......thats exactly what non techie people will think.....this commercial will only put the linux name in peoples heads.....without anything else this wont help linux....i geuss the publicity is good though, but i doubt anyone that doesnt know what linux is wont see this
- kiduk, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13That was annoying to just watch.
- snapcase, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14If that aired on TV, it would confuse the average person and they likely wouldn't realize they mean the Windows OS since a hell of a lot of people out there don't even know what Linux is.
- chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15Was hoping for something better. Just another childish "Windows is teh suckz" Apple style ad.
- tformed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I needed that warning, I don't want to see that video again.
- cawpin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10"Those who can't secure Linux properly are just as vulnerable to intruders (not viruses, mind) as those running Windows."
While this is true it isn't the default like it is in Windows. When you install a modern Linux system it asks you for an administrator password AND has you set up a user account. People will use the user account and be far more secure than Windows the default, before Vista, of using the administrator account. When it automatically secures you it is easier; that's what Joe Shmoe needs. - astrotrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"And now, the penguin on the top of your tele is about to explode."
-Monty Python - masnevets, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The whole time I was thinking about the trailer for "Don't" from Grindhouse.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8last time i checked, Linux isn't a company........
- Zaggynl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Heck, even I could do that better.
- 2kude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8You realize the majority of the web runs on Linux and BSD, right? LOL
Fanboys are so funny sometimes... - vulgrin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10"like the recent FUD coming from microsoft"
I haven't seen any ads about that. - richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13WRONG. Linux is more secure because it uses a superior file permissions model.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Something to remember is that to the average PC user Windows is free too, I know they do pay for it in the price of their PC, but I seriously doubt the vast majority of people know that.
- richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8Do you really think nobody has tried to crack it?
- tlarkin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Well I am not in advertising but that commercial does not really do a good job of depicting why someone would want to use Linux over any other OS out there. They should have showed off some eye candy like beryl or compiz, and possibly had a few monkeys running around. For some reason monkeys are always funny and should be used in every commercial. I know for a fact I use career builder now over monster.com simply because the monkeys on the commercials.
Though I guess it was subtle that they kept zooming into windows on buildings to refer to windows as being the weakest security point of an OS. Clever but I think most people won't make the connection and other people will be like WTF is Linux? Is that like some home security company?
Overall, not a very good commercial. - ChayD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The problem is that there are consumers out there that are probably using some form of embedded linux
without realising it, and the sad thing is that no credit is given to it by the manufacturers who put it
on their phones, set-top boxes, routers, etc (other than perhaps a brief mention in the 'About' menu).
I bet if these devices had technologies from big commercial outfits, it would be all Windows flags,
"Intel inside", "Powered by Cisco" etc slapped all over the thing.
I think It should be part of the GPL, that if any part of GNU/Linux is used for something other than
a PC or obvious application of Linux, that it comes with a free Tux bumper sticker or similar :) - gravedigg, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I'm as into linux as the next guy, but this "commercial" is not good at all.
- dotslashsocks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Wow, that was *****.
- vulgrin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Seriously, who the ***** cares? Did it offend you that a video was misplaced? Did it change the item? Would you have dugg it up if the had placed it in the video section?
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Since Linux is free, Torvalds can't cut them a break on licensing fees for branding their kit with Genuine Linux Inside stickers.
- cobra1122, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7stupid commercial
- neau, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Fail.
- baalzebub, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2bash-3.2$ uname -a
Linux gnu 2.6.21.5 #1 Tue Jun 12 19:14:24 CDT 2007 i686 athlon-4 i386 GNU/Linux - higi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My sister saw this commercial and automatically switched to Linux.
- TheSolomon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Agreed. Given they were trying to make the "home invasion" to "Microsoft Windows" comparison, they probably should have taken footage of windows that intruders could ACTUALLY get into, and not attic and high-rise windows. I can imagine them explaining the video: "Running Microsoft Windows on your PC is like leaving the windows of your house or apartment open... well, not *these* windows you're seeing, since they're too high and nobody can break in... but you know what I mean." :-P
- legolas2war, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3am i the only one that forgot what the previous word was in the video?
- twrife, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I could see where it was going really easily.
- ClayDragon, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4No, THESE are the best commercials for Linux:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGvHNNOLnCk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJ3y_QopcuQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhUAr-P_39U - Megaqwerty22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree with a lot of the people here, the text was too slow, but what would have been great is if after it said "Windows" you heard the Windows XP startup sound, saw the desktop, and then it said it's final message.
- Link459, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wow.
That was the worst video I have ever seen in my life.
Clever? Wow, windows. :| -
