- Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29That stereotype has always been known. Hell it's thousands of years old. Women's minds are just different than ours. Computers, math, science, and engineering simply don't interest them. That's like a shoe store saying that there is a stereotype that men don't like shopping for shoes. As a man, how does that make you feel? Does it make you want to shop for more shoes? I would love to see more women in computing, but I realistically just don't expect it to happen.
- elnerdo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21There were no unexpected results there.
Ubuntu, Firefox, GNOME or KDE.. All pretty obvious. - scott12087, on 10/10/2007, -5/+14"The Survey You Have Requested is Not Valid" wtf?
- bangmalley, on 08/30/2008, -3/+12direct link:

- Nougat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10What? Do you want a cookie?
- Salgat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Thank you, this needed to be said.
- CurtHowland, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I really like the fact that the results for GUI were tied at 39.2% for both Gnome and Kde.
It's not the fight that is interesting, it's the benefits of competition! - 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Well some people like Linux but aren't happy with their (former) distro... like my attitude for openSUSE..
- thcobbs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5"I would love to see more women in computing"
I would too... especially the likes of Jenna Jameson and Bunny Love....
Oh, not THAT type of computing? - panthrosrevenge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5No it's not
- plizard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5no it's not
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8It seems to be purely technical. We really need the women to participate in these surveys as well. After the OpenSUSE survey, there's a stereotype.
- 9a3eedi, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9As expected. Ubuntu, and therefore GNOME. People seriously need to stop promoting Ubuntu only and start promoting Linux itself. There are other great desktop distros like Sabayon you know..
- 350Zed, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Why don't the ask if I'm actually HAPPY with my Linux OS?
- thtroyer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5What's wrong with Ubuntu or Gnome? No one is discounting the greatness of other distros or DEs -- that is just what's popular right now.
Granted, Ubuntu converted me from Windows, but I am starting to experiment with other distros. I've been building Gentoo from the ground up and so far, I like what I see. People do move between distros, and there's nothing wrong with that. If someone starts with Ubuntu, great! If they start with Fedora/Gentoo/Sabayon/PCLOS/whatever, great! They are still using Linux and I don't see what the bid deal is. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5 I agree with you..it's all good...But it won't happen.
- NatieB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The Ubuntu numbers probably shot up when it hit Digg's front page. I like Ubuntu and all, but it seems like the only distro that's represented on Digg.
- shakin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Nope, I still get the error.
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Did it occur to you that all of Digg doesn't really care exactly which software you, personally, use?
- Disfnord, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I suppose you are a huge sports fan, after all, all men love sports and all women love shopping. Couldn't possibly be cultural, or the way we are raised... Nope, men's brains are wired different!
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5This survey is not penetrating the community very well. Fedora has a much better share than this is showing. This needs to be posted in the mailing lists of all the distros on the list.
- kahrn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Not really.. firefox on linux is awfully slower than it should be (long startup times, etc..).
Coming from someone who runs fedora on main box. - allywilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have to unfortunately agree with 9a9eedi on this matter - but only to a point. For the converts over the past few years - Ubuntu is gaining a support much akin to the OS X following. This isn't exactly a bad thing, but it does sometimes at least _appear_ to skew some results. I'm an Ubuntu user - but I prefer Gentoo for servers (source build preference). It depends on what you want to do with it. If I just want a system to work as a desktop I'd use Ubuntu, for specific tasks Gentoo (or Slackware).
- deviceguru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3but why... why is it that Ubuntu appears to be most "represented" on Digg? What's different about Digg users? or, are Digg users representative of the cross section of Linux users? that's the question I'd like to know the answer to!
- Skeithy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I actually dual boot Gentoo/XP on my main machine and put Kubuntu on the second computer. I use all KDE programs because of how nicely they all work together, plus they are very good at what they do, Konqueror is my favorite web browser :)
- Scriptor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Have you tried the trimmed down version of Sabayon?
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It was interesting to see how the others are doing though. There's more to Linux besides Ubuntu.
- carbonfree314, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2They should've covered Unix-based operating systems as well, since many major DEs run on Unix. Besides, they already listed Safari as a browser option. How does that make sense? If they're talking about running the Windows version through WINE, why didn't they include IE, as terrible as it is?
- maziarmd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4i'm sure that the most significant change will be the increase in use of Firefox ;)
- saftaplan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Phew, I thought I was the only one still using Konqueror :-D 14.5% is higher than I expected.
- OtakuTom, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think it's still a little soon to be seriously looking at the results. Some are more obvious than others (such as Firefox and Wine taking the internet browser and Windows emulation, respectively). I was a little surprised to see Ubuntu with such a large percentage compared to some others like Fedora, but I think that will level out over the next few days/weeks once more people take it.
- Ademan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Erm, it's the same even in matriarchal cultures, so yeah, it's (probably) genetic, especially when you look at men undergoing horomonal treatments for prostate cancer. (my grandfather's undergoing it right now, and his family (not him) were told about the side effects from a doctor and a few friends, all said the same thing, it sexually confuses the man, and makes him behave more like a woman... unless you want to claim the man knows what society expects of women, and decides to fill that role... which wouldn't take a doctor to be identified as *****).
- beatnikwriter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'm a noob to Linux at the moment, but after lots of research I've decided that when I build my uber computer later in the eyar, I'll pick PCLinuxOS and KDE. :)
- beatnikwriter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ah, maybe I got dug down by typo nazis? Or Ubuntu fans? I'm a noob and can acknowledge that. PCLinuxOS and KDE just seems the best way for me to transition to Linux from Windows really. I hope to dual boot between Linux and Vista eventually, need Windows for games...
- Darkhacker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You might want to check your extensions and see if one of them isn't buggy. I'm on Linux (Ubuntu 7.04) with an updated Firefox and it loads almost instantly.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2 Sounds good...Don't know why you are being dug down..
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2 The big deal is here at Digg, only the Ubuntu Linux articles get Dugg as if it's the only Linux out there..You might see three to eight hits for say,OpenSuse and the same kind of article for Ubuntu will get something like thirty hits.
The same for other distros.
The other day I posted info on a new distro called Klikit and it got 4 votes...
Had it been about a new version of Ub' the fanboys would have been all over it like flies on *****.
THAT is what the problem is.
Also, the same old Ubuntu stories get posted week after week after week..Just this week there have been three "I moved from Windows to Ubuntu" blogs" posted...Other similar blogs, like "I moved from Windows to Mint" are ignored...I click on these stories, but they go no where cause they do not deal with Ubuntu...Then there are the blogs about Ubuntu disgused to be about Linux in general.
See the problem? Just look at the Ubuntu fluff that made the front page this morning..."Picture of the week: I Love Ubuntu."
This site has hit dirt bottom if THAT is important enough to be seen by Diggers as the picture of the week and to make the front page.
Now do you get it?
It's all about Ubuntu here and the obsession with it by fanboys really is getting old...In fact, some people,I've noticed are starting to mark all Ubuntu articles as spam...
And the Ub' fanboys wonder why...Your as bad as a bunch of born again Christians.
I'm planning to fix my Digg so no Ub' articles show up in my Linux section I'm so sick of it. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1 Most likely you are correct.Ubuntu fans don't want anyone to see that someone might actually decide to use something besides the Almighty Ubuntu !!!
What sacrilege!
Yes,i agree that a duel boot is best. I've done the same thing.
Klikit Linux/Windows XP for games.
Hopefully, someday games will be ported to Linux and we can all dump Windows altogether.
Anyway, good luck with your plan. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1 So I've heard...But since they hopped in the sackaroo with Microsoft,I'll give it a miss.
- SweetMercury, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, it's not. This is GREAT publicity, BTW.
- renegadeafk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sabyon is so bloated, and I'm not a fan of the source package management (Really Really Slow)
- computerdan000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No, the error's still there. I sent them a message via the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page, since I'm willing to bet they're not checking this Digg story for comments.
- zwaldowski, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wine is not an emulator!
- DickBreath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I hope Microsoft does this!
First, I'm not obligated to use the MS Linux.
Second, all code that Microsoft releases under GPLv2 or v3 is automatically protected from Microsoft's patents that cover such licensed code. (For that reason, I don't think Microsoft will ever do this. The FUD would die instantly.) - MeneerR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hormones play a part. They make us different. But that doesn't mean there is shoe-shopping gene for god sake's!
It's just that certain parts of life are more the playground of one specific gender. I mean, if computers would have been designed by women than for sure it would interest them more. Perhaps in a different way.
Perhaps we would have had beryl sooner. Perhaps we would have more bouncing paper-clips I don't know.
But its that everything is _oriented_ towards males that make the IT a male-dominant culture.
To see how easy that can change look at Apple. The iMac and the iPod are two examples of technology presumble only interesting for males. Yet the way they work, the way they look they also target women. At least 40% of their market-share is female.
It's just that a male boss hires male employees. They make products that interest males. They use technology that is developed by a male. The documentation, the names, the corporate culture is all male here. It might attract more woman if it would have been created by more woman. It's just a vicious circle. - EagleRock, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3No it isn't...it has been Digg Effect'd.
- marx2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dont care what distro people use (and I personally use Ubuntu), as long as they're using Linux
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1While I agree that this survey is not penetrating the community very well the vast majority of Any-Distro users don't frequent mailing lists, is better that this survey get posted on the homepage of the every distro but that won't happen.
