"How many times do we have to remind people, the dark theme was only for testing purposes; in fact, for default it's been switched back to the light version.
And that's only a mock up, if it wants to have even a chance, the person needs to get an actual working theme. " (neon) - srg13, on 08/04/2008, -3/+83Looks really great. I absolutely love the GDM (Login manger) theme. The window borders are cool too, as well as the semi-transparent panels. Maybe the yellow window background is a little much - the dark grey used in the window menus would be better.
Come to think of it, I really don't get why Gnome and/or Ubuntu don't ship with transparent panels. They make the desktop look far better than the default, and it's so simple to change! - Skrezium, on 08/04/2008, -4/+79That's plain awesome. Ubuntu devs *must* work on that!
Slick, elegant, easy on eyes.. Kudos, a really great work! - Dongvid, on 08/04/2008, -11/+64Dark themes are the way of the future! No more eyestrain, please! Digg, release a dark theme.
- neasteflorin, on 08/04/2008, -17/+65The best theme ever. Better than Mac OS X!!!
- knopper67, on 08/05/2008, -1/+36Transparency != Vista
Get that through your thick skull. - estvir, on 08/05/2008, -3/+37No, it's Photoshop.
- dtd00d, on 08/05/2008, -8/+42It's okay I got a theme that looks like Windows Vis...
...Mojave.
/s - 3242130193, on 08/04/2008, -2/+31Wow, the dark theme has a lot more meaning behind it when you put it in context of the wooden background. I definitely would give it a vote.
- slythfox, on 08/05/2008, -0/+28I think you're missing the point of Ubuntu. Not everyone uses a certain operating system because of how it looks, but good artwork definitely is a plus.
- Disease, on 08/05/2008, -0/+23This time it actually is photoshopped.
- P8ntBal1551, on 08/05/2008, -12/+32...thats not that hard......
- xlegs, on 08/04/2008, -2/+21Dugg for pure awesomeness
- Vinvin, on 08/04/2008, -3/+21The GDM theme is nice (is this just a mock-up? I'm not sure whether this really is possible), but rouded corners on menus just don't cut it IMHO.
- Jimmni, on 08/05/2008, -6/+24So a beautiful, usable Ubuntu is essentially Mac OS X with more transparency. Those plain, basic concept images look great, but nobody works with so little open and happening on screen at once. When you've got the windows piling up all that transparency will get confusing, fast. Mac OS X learnt it, Vista's currently learning it...
- mikedoth, on 08/05/2008, -1/+18Direct: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/ ...
- Disease, on 08/05/2008, -3/+20It's a fusion of all three operating system themes.
- goofygarber, on 08/05/2008, -0/+15When I clicked the article, I wasn't really sure what to expect but this wasn't it. I think it looks awesome too, sort of mac-ish (the dock, the transparent header) but I actually did a double take. That login window is better than the ones in Vista and OSX.
- HCviolence, on 08/05/2008, -1/+15Somebody needs to make this into a theme.
- ohmysac, on 08/05/2008, -1/+12Aren't you cool with your radiation symbol signature!
- onux16, on 08/05/2008, -2/+12Considering my Ubuntu's theme once looked like an install out of '95, I feel this is a much better look. (I use plain defaults; sue me!)
- NOFXY, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10strangely enough, after seeing it posted, was it yesterday?, i started working on making a close replica of the login screen. I've never done one before so im learning as i go (if anyone knows how to make user list transparent it would be awesome) its a little rough around the edges but im getting there slowly. http://s4.tinypic.com/2igk6d1.jpg
- 0tis, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10More transparency, less Steve Jobs
- RTFishUL, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10balls. Does anyone know where he got that wallpaper? The wood one, not the Ibex one?
- Culyt, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10People prefer dark themes, light themes have been done to death. Also I think dark is easier on the eyes some what.
The main problem I have with dark themes is that websites and things like wordprocessors are mostly light which ruins the effect.
There are also some problems with applications that aren't expecting dark, for instance open office looks terrible with any colour other than white as the page colour, often because there is pictures with white backgrounds, but also because printed documents are going to be white anyway.
Firefox has some display issues, particularly on sites that for some reason set the colour of the font on input boxes (often forcing it to be black which it is by default anyway) without changing the background colour.
But having a theme will point out these kinds of problems so they can be fixed, although in the Firefox case its website designers fault for not being consistent with colours they are changing and assuming the defaults are close enough to their own, but I suppose we will need to work around them so it will probably end up ignoring the colours for widgets in Firefox or something.

I believe they don't do it because they think there's usability issues, due to the font being black and not white; it's harder to read. But I agree, it would look nicer than the opaque panels, it's more elegant. - srg13, on 08/05/2008, -0/+8First impressions are important.
- ahawks, on 08/05/2008, -11/+19Beautiful? Feels like I'm staring at a wood floor, no thanks.
Edit: OK... the theme portion I like, I do like the dark colors and reduced eye strain. I just don't like the wallpaper - khsheehan, on 08/05/2008, -3/+11That wallpaper is the background image from carsonified. I just set that as my wallpaper. It's slightly modified but it looks exactly like the version I made. http://www.carsonified.com/wp-content/themes/carso ...
- ken11235, on 08/05/2008, -1/+9That's a great design. But what we need isn't people to vote for it, we need somebody to make it! That's why things like appearance get neglected in an all volunteer project.
- haterofps3, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Shush there be no common sense on Digg!
- Tenoq, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7DO WANT.
I'd also like them to fix the font rendering. I know there's dozens of tweaks and guides out there... but even with those, it's STILL not as good as OS X or Vista out-of-the-box. There's no reason to not fix the fonts by default, and make them better than their competitors. - InThePants, on 08/05/2008, -2/+9I think you have a good point, people are digging you down though. Shame.
- Heywoodj, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Use the girl in the tub as your background.
You won't notice the icons. - HonoredMule, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Sure, but the theme that gets picked as default will actually get substantial effort put into it and will be very well implemented.
- LoudMusic, on 08/05/2008, -8/+14Jesus E McGillicuty. It's a theme, man. If you don't like it, change it. I'm sure it'll come with six or seven for you to choose from and a whiz-bang application to download thousands more and maybe an easy way to customize your own, save it, and distribute it to the public.
Theme petitions making front page. Slow news day, much? - SitPoMk, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6There is no need for a vote. They already stated that that is their goal for the next major release.
I wish I could find the link though - InorganicMatter, on 08/05/2008, -13/+19Because theft is the greatest form of flattery.
Like it or not, Vista has the best balance of form versus functionality. Mac OS X places way too much emphasis on form, and current Linux distributions are skewed too heavily towards functionality by default. - Heywoodj, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6***** me running! Not that tub girl!
The one provided in in the Ubuntu se wallpapers.
My bad. - oobuntu, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6Believe it or not, many people never change the default theme. It's important to have a good one.
- aComa, on 08/05/2008, -1/+7Your ***** has glossy windows and a sidebar with weather display? What the hell have you been eating...?
- specialbuddy1, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6Like Ubuntu?
- yahoofrom, on 08/05/2008, -1/+6Hi I'm a PC
- Culyt, on 08/05/2008, -3/+8Way to completely skew the results by posting it to Digg thus completely invalidating the voting process with a flash mob. Does any one know if the alternative themes are any good?
Personally I hate the dock, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple have a patent on it too and its too much like turning Ubuntu into OSX, Ubuntu should be its own thing.
Also the current Intrepid theme is only a place holder until the real theme is done, the real theme designs I saw looked better that, other than possibly the wallpaper.
I really think Ubuntu should ship with a few themes and wallpapers. There should be a centralised theme changer should work for Usplash, GDM in addition to normal Gnome/GTK. Also other apps such as the terminal colours, splash screens, Firefox and so on when possible.
☢ - HonoredMule, on 08/05/2008, -2/+7AWN means pretty++; usable -= 10;
AWN (or any kind of dock) makes a great one night stand, but isn't long-term relationship material. - Feanor, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs23/f/2007/346/5/1/Vis ...
:D I searched for it for a while too - Louis11, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5Really nice :-) Too bad I don't run ubuntu . . . maybe i'll boot up one of my boxes with it!
- dperren, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5Wait, a dock? So "let's take the very, very worst feature of the OSX GUI and put it into Ubuntu!".
Let's not. - aceuk, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5http://willwill100.deviantart.com/
- Waterrat, on 08/05/2008, -1/+6Dark themes are so depressing..I like the transparent semi transparent themes.
