- slithy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35I believe the odd numbered kernels are development kernels...thus why it went from 2.4 -> 2.6. So 2.8 would be the next kernel to really get excited about
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Yes, you are right. This is stated fact.
- zachfewtrell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13In fact this is longer true after kernel version 2.6.
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel#Version_numbering
"Starting with the Linux 2.6.x series, there is no significance to even or odd numbers, with new feature development going on in the same kernel series. Linus Torvalds has stated that this will be the model for the foreseeable future." - furyg3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Sorry, we messed up.
We'll go back to only digging iPhone stories now, so you can keep masturbating without having to go beyond the front page.
Again, apologies. - spindle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10He said pretty much the same thing before that he is saying now. He isn't going to do anything beyond 2.6 unless he needs to incorporate some major change to the kernel that would either cause major changes to the ABI or would take a long time to stabilize. But, the current model seems to be working great for introducing new features while keeping the kernel stable, so there hasn't been a need to fork over to 2.7 just yet.
Distro vendors always just backported new features from the unstable branch back into the stable branch anyway, so this new development process seems to be better all around. - lordfoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Is it just me or has his accent become much less distinctive. Interesting perspective anyhow.

- PigThief, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Keep in mind that this is still primarily a tech-related news site. If you don't like these articles, filter them out.
Ah, not to be insulting, but I miss the old days of Digg where it was only technology. Sure, I can filter the other topics out, but the commenting community in all subjects seems to have gone down the drain with all these blend jokes, calling us nerds, console wars, and so on. - dokeshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I won't ruin the surprise, but it's mentioned in his book, "Just For Fun", what distro he was using for home and which he used for work. It's a good read.
It's a bit outdated now, though, I guess... Afterall, one chapter mentioned that the PS2 had just come out in the U.S. - grubesteak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A bit off topic, but I got to thinking last night ... does anyone know what distro, if any, Linus uses? I mean, surely there's one he prefers, right?
- bananaguyc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Computers are cool now.
This is 2007, not 1987. - JoeRandom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Lol. Average Joe linux admin can build a distro from scratch now-a-days. I'd say the kernel overseer can.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, that would ruin the F'in surprise.
- starquake, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8For more non-geeky stories go to http://msn.com
- Xorp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I thought I heard a while ago he wasn't going to do anything beyond 2.6
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope he will release an updated version of the book :)
- PSPon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Where is Linus at? The place looks beautiful
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ever innovating, eh?
- bcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or you could... you know.. just tell us.
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice Interview.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah, by the way. Straight from Richard Stallman's mouth, there will be a new revision to the draft of GPLv3 released next week. He came here (Drexel University), and gave a lecture.
- sn0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You need JavaScript enabled
- OneManArmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone got a youtube link?. The video is not loading for me :S
- Dankoozy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SCO has already demanded to see the code for 2.7 last year, or was it 2005? maybe they will finally get what they asked for in 2007.
- BigKitty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@grubesteak,
This is off the subject but there is something I should let you know about, especially since I think you mentioned that you have a baby daughter. Remember the Consumer Reports infant car seat article that you were concerned about? They just announced that the article was retracted. Sorry about that...
http://digg.com/world_news/RETRACTION_Consumer_Reports_pulls_negative_infant_car_seat_report
They will do new testing and announce results at a later date.
(blush - how embarrassing!!!) - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1He has been seen with Fedora on a Thinkpad at certain conferences. He also uses a Powermac G5- probably Debian or Gentoo on that machine. He has spoken highly of Redhat and Fedora in the past.
- mudimba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Many years ago (probably 2001 or so) I read that he used Red Hat. Don't know if that is still the case.
- diggsIt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why are Kernel developers 'not the friendliest' people?
- vemon388, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Looks like the releases they are making now, it would take something like 25 years to get to a logical 2.7.
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Can't they just implement some kind of automatic load balancing system from the kernel,
and make it work really easy, so if you have 10 linux workstations for example they'll piss all over 10 boxes with Vista!!! And without configuration just have them on the same subnet and they'll do that automatically.
Then call it kernel 2.7 - downlo, on 10/12/2007, -14/+12.7, that when 3.0 design begins.
- philaiv, on 10/12/2007, -16/+0Is it just me or does he repeat the same few phrases over & over in the video?
And, not to be rude, but do people still call him "mush for brains"? - dougbdl, on 10/12/2007, -20/+2Wow. This may be the geekiest story ever.
Font page? You people need help. - SuperJimmyJimbo, on 10/12/2007, -23/+0sorry to abuse comment structure BUT:
no William Shatner = No Digg

What is Digg?
