- shrewduser, on 10/11/2007, -2/+102if this true then holy crap! we've been asking valve for this for a long time now... i'd like to thank all the members of the steam forums who contributed to the tens of thousands of posts that we racked up there :)
cheers to all of you. - Agret, on 10/10/2007, -4/+67http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/4804/thanksvalvecopyha5.jpg
- psycybrfrk, on 10/10/2007, -9/+59OMG that'd be better then sex. No more rebooting to play half life!
Thank you valve for listening to the linux community! - schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -6/+46Wow, so the pressure paid off at the end. Thank you, Valve. Smart move.
- FDL1, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34It's a trick to get you banned for mentioning Linux ports in their forums, obviously.
- Shootfast, on 10/10/2007, -1/+29It's only a short jump from Linux to OSX
- dbr_onix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Isn't there linux versions of the dedicated server stuff already?
- l0ne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24Once their engine(s) is/are ported to OpenGL it is more or less trivial to make them work in OS X.
- thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Tell that to ID.
- jackkerouac, on 10/11/2007, -11/+33Virgin.
- phjr, on 10/10/2007, -3/+25This person would be a sysadmin and developer simulatously? That's insane!
- asdfrewq, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22You know, I'd prefer them to take years and do it right, rather then rush it out and get it wrong. Valve have a pretty good track record with releasing quality, the only exceptions being original steam client which was indeed a dog and HL2 stuttering issues which they promptly fixed. They also tend to support their software well after what seems to be the norm for games, for example HL2/CS:S are still receiving updates and minor fixes over 2 years after it was originally released.
- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21and epic.
- fgsfds, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Insane? THIS IS STANDAAAAARD!
- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21i just started a new thread in the off topic section of the steam forums, anyone's welcome to come and lodge an opinon / thank valve etc :)
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6690912#post6690912 - csulok, on 10/10/2007, -2/+22i hope its not just steam but actual games as well
- Irco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20arrgh!!
then != than - CSharpSauce, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20Wow you must really hate rebooting....
- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20well there are already many games available thru steam that have native linux clients (darwinia, X2, doom3, quake series etc etc.) as well as many comming to steam shortly.
not only that but the people behind red orchestra said they would release a linux client if steam were available on linux.
but the job ad clearly states that porting windows games (not just applications) to linux is one of the responsibilities... :) - superal1394, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19I'm sorry, but they may finally be hiring some one to do it, but knowing valve, it is going to be years before we see anything.
- fgsfds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17HL1 is still receiving updates and minor fixes. Let it not be said that Valve is neglectful when it comes to supporting their products.
- trogdor282, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17He can't be a virgin, everybody knows Linux users have sex about as often as they have to reboot.
- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15especially when macos's and Linux's architecture remain so similar....
- SavageBlackCat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16All that and $25/hr.
- gaminggeek, on 10/10/2007, -8/+23They might have meant game SERVERS this is valve after all
- mutz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19if microsoft would only drop the directX ***** then we all can get along nice and easy ;)
- Oniony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15It could be Valve listening to the user 'demands', or, more likely, Valve have simply identified a market with anticipated growth which they would like to enter and perhaps dominate before it is too late.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+18Gay.
- outlaw686, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13nudge, nudge, blizzard? helooooooo?
- Coy0te, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14You have got to be ***** kidding me... This is the guy that said the 360 hardware is a nightmare to work with and that he doesn't trust Microsoft with keeping PCs up to date. Steam is in direct competition with "Games for Windows" FFS.
- brdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11"Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."
- RedIcculus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I wonder what Icculus (Ryan C. Gordon), who did all of those awesome Linux ports is up to these days. He is the first person that came to mind when I saw this article.
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Oh yeah, and Windows users are ALL about paying for stuff 100% of the time, eh? I know a lot of people that run Photoshop, but I don't know anyone that has paid for it. Office? Nero? Windows XP or Vista itself? Games? Yeah, all pirated. But what do we Linux users know about paying for stuff?
- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11unsubstantiated tripe! .....but seeing how this is the internet.
- dafragsta, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Now if Adobe would just listen. Adobe porting CS4 or even CS5 to Linux would be a near knockout punch to windows. That'd be the tipping point that made everyone take Linux seriously.
- tekrat, on 10/10/2007, -5/+15I think Valve is doing this to get games on the PC Linux platform (obvious) but they also know someone is thinking about releasing a new gaming platform that runs Linux natively. The rumor on the street is that the Nintendo DS 2 is that new bit of hardware running Nintendo Linux alla Wii's custom Linux. Also they get a couple of current platforms in the process as well (Wii and PS3).
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11As angers says, all the dedicated servers run on Linux.
Also, the job description says "Port Windows-based _games_ to the Linux platform.". Doesn't sound like servers to me - fgsfds, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11ID and Epic have been supporting Linux for years, so Valve can't really claim to be first.
Most likely, ID releasing so much of their back catalog on Steam is a significant reason for this job opening. Since Steam either currently is or is rapidly becoming Valve's primary source of income, getting into the Linux market would allow them to pretty much lockout any other attempts for competition to form. With major hardware manufacturers providing Linux as an option on their systems, the business market is going to increasingly see Linux as a viable workstation solution. Once employees start using Linux at work, there will be little barrier to its use at home.
Compounding this is the release of the ATI specifications. Up until now Linux 3D drivers have mostly been either hack-job pieces of crap or well-developed and at least three generations old, but the release of the ATI specs means that there will immediately be many start-up OS driver projects immediately, which will gradually die off and/or merge into one major driver group (Which AMD would likely then choose to hire) with a few ancillary projects and forks. Once that point is achieved, Valve will be able to declare that driver the standard and lock their client to only allow video drivers which hash to a verified release (With the possibility of supporting a few of the significant forks) in order to prevent people from altering the drivers for the purpose of cheating.
Remember: If a game looks bad or crashes the system, the game developer takes the blame BEFORE the video card or drivers.
Making a move now has a small buy-in cost that may well be balanced out by existing Linux users, as well as a much smaller ongoing maintenance cost. However, the potential profit of becoming the de-facto standard is significant.
Should Valve actually extend itself to Linux, one likely result would be the return of multiple rendering engine paths or standardization on cross-platform compatible subsystems. Software mode is going to stay dead, but OGL2.0 could be possible in HL3. - dracflamloc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I know we shouldn't wet ourselves. But this has to start somewhere right?
- dbcalo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10linux is linux. distro wont matter.
- Agret, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10You're an idiot
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Eat hearty, for tonight we dine in Valve's cafeteria!
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Cute!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Great...Sick of windows breaking and spending hours cleaning up the mess...
- angers, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9They can already run on Linux... so it must be for something else.
- Syraxis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Very good news for Linux users, but what about Mac OS X?
- tboutcher, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9So can we start bugging bizzard to port starcraft 2?
- AlmostEvil, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Just to play with the Linux community valve should have put this on their website on the first of April.
- shrewduser, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10yes, but wine's a stop gap solution :)
native would be ideal. - cjschmidt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Get it running on linux and a Mac version is guaranteed.
