- NoNamesLeft, on 10/11/2007, -155/+410Way to listen to your customers Valve.
- Fuze07, on 10/11/2007, -90/+343They've clearly stated that they have no intention to port Steam to Linux, first they closed the threads. 2nd he said people will start getting banned. And why on earth, pray tell me, would you discuss the idea, IF YOU KNEW THAT IT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN? A suggestion forum is for SUGGESTING new ideas. People in the threads weren't discussing it in a "civilian" manner. With all the RELEASE THE CLIENT PLX. Valve got fed up and this is the result. Ultimately it's your own fault for getting the thread closed. If you have a good idea, send a support ticket. Have a nice day.
- absmith, on 10/11/2007, -20/+212What use would a native Linux steam client do since all the games steam can deliver are windows only?
- imjustabill, on 10/11/2007, -22/+182What is it with the sensationalist headlines? Just talking about linux wont get you banned, its asking one specific question thats been answered a zillion times. Imagine being a forum moderator. Your company posts its official stance on something on your website, yet idiots keep bugging you about it. They send you emails and fill up your support forums with completely redundant questions. I think I'd be pretty annoyed too.
- LowRadio, on 10/11/2007, -22/+157Oh well thats too bad.
I just donated 30$ to the wine project. - Myrix, on 10/11/2007, -32/+116I personally support Valve here. They said it wasn't going to happen, so stfu about it.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -40/+118Buried your post (NoNamesLeft) because you obviously dont know the whole story.
Unlike Digg, Valve needs to keep their site clean. When the SUPPORT TICKET LISTING gets spammed by jackasses like you asking for OMG LINUX SUPPORT LULZ, you risk the efficiency of their support mechanism for other customers. They have a right to ban you *****. - Davydog187, on 10/11/2007, -16/+89They aren't banning people because they are talking about Steam on Linux, they are threatening to ban because users on the steam forums are creating tons of duplicate threads. Valve is not the bad guy here...
- Jordanco, on 10/11/2007, -12/+57God forbid forum moderators moderating their forum. steam is not going to be on linux, get over it, and go buy different computer games.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -14/+56its probably because everyone keeps pissing and moaning about it
- FireForEffect47, on 10/11/2007, -23/+64I stopped using Steam when they peppered ads all over Counter-Strike 1.6.
- damentz, on 10/11/2007, -12/+52If you can't beat it, wrap it ;)
- benanzo, on 10/11/2007, -22/+59Don't buy/play their ***** games. That's how that problem gets solved.
- CoRP5e, on 10/11/2007, -21/+43What will they ever do without that .005% user base.
- redsox59, on 10/11/2007, -8/+28I wouldn't call it a problem. Valve said no Linux. End of story. In forums they generally have FAQs or things of that nature stickied and I'm sure somewhere in some of them it states Valve's position on Linux.
The mod was only trying to keep the forums clear of unnecessary threads.
And plus now a days STEAM will talk with Wine fine. - greystar, on 10/11/2007, -16/+35Geez - now we're posting forum posts as news? Sound the trumpets - Digg has officially lost it's relevancy.
- Alesir, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26Stop asking for a Linux version of Steam. Ask for Linux versions of the damned games. What are you going to do with Steam? Use the buddy messenger?
But seriously, stop asking. They aren't going to change their mind. If you want to play CS:S on Linux, get Wine or stop bitching. - panzergeist, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Valve was never a big developer on Linux. All they have ever released on Linux was dedicated server builds for their games.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -14/+30I think I'll bury you for totally missing the point.
- eclectro, on 10/11/2007, -10/+26Not to buy valve products? I hope that they did too.
- Microdot, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18yes, thats it. they should make a client that does nothing but download (the entire premise is idiotic... i think someone though valve = t3h g4m3z) for an os that has such a small tiny little percentage of the market, that they would go broke in the process.
i am a linux fanboy at heart... but sometimes, you ***** morons embarrass me. - SilverhammerMBA, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23This is just plain unrealistic. Do people honestly think that creating a Linux version of Steam will magically make all of the games on Steam work on Linux too? Um, do you guys realize that Steam is just a program for buying games, downloading them, and browsing servers? When you run a game through Steam, all that Steam basically does is double clicks the exe for you. I'm sure VALVe could easily port Steam to Linux but then they'd just get a bunch of people bitching about how their games don't work.
- Lighthater, on 10/11/2007, -11/+26Obviously, if they aren't providing a linux client and you are a linux user, you aren't a customer... unless you run windows also and bought their software. In that case, you are a customer and they already have your money, why do they need to make a linux client also? They still win.
- schestowitz, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22It could be worse. Yahoo DELETED answers that recommend Linux. http://digg.com/linux_unix/Yahoo_is_Book_Burning_Linux_BSD_Open_Source
- CptnObvious, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Well there's Darwinia, Defcon, Uplink, X3: Reunion, and X2: The Threat that all have Linux clients, not a whole lot but perhaps if there was a linux client then other linux games would use it and maybe more games would support linux as a result.
- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -13/+27Yes all six of them.
This thread is like a nerd uprising. Digg really skews your view of what people actually use, and it isn't linux. - ernasty10050, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Just for the record, and I know this is beside the point, but Steam is a 2 meg download. Not 500.
- nickmv, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19that's like comparing apples to grapefruits.....Dell can cater to a large user base (read: servers and businesses) that want and need to run Linux, whereas Valve would only be catering to a few hundred at the most. As I've pointed out in other comments on this story, businesses operate on Marg Bens > Marg Costs when making decisions
- TEMM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Freedom of speech does not extend to private forums like this. Ultimately it is Valves house and valve can kick you out whenever the hell the way so you need to get over it and play by their rules.
- Tweakedenigma, on 10/11/2007, -7/+19Iv said it before and I'll say it some more Talk with your money I will pay for games that have Linux support like Vendetta online but if the company doesn't wanna support me I wont support them.
- 2kude, on 10/11/2007, -9/+21Wow, as a daily Linux user, I'm behind this 100%. I'm sick of the new converts to Linux (or should I say Ubuntu) acting like jackasses and expecting everything in Linux. You think they're so ***** blind that they didn't see the many people asking in the past? Stop bothering them about it, and maybe when Linux gets a decent desktop marketshare, they'll consider it.
- kosmoX, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16But but but its on the Internet so it belongs to everybody!!
- Urusai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Most multiplayer games have a Linux server...because Windows sucks for servage.
- ricree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14I kind of agree with them here, even though it seems a bit heavy handed. This isn't really something that people should be submitting a support ticket for. If this sort of discussion is being suppressed in a general discussion forum, then we have something to talk about. Until then, though, I side with valve here.
- pkakira88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Actually what I'm gathering from the forums posts. Some of the companies were offering to port there games over onto linux if Steam were made available through linux. Realistically not all the games would have been ported over, just the more popular ones and the ones that other companies were willing to port over anyway.
- gcnaddict, on 10/11/2007, -11/+23Except their products are selling, so you fail.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Even if they did say they were making it, good luck on waiting!
"Yea, its coming this fall....uary....ummer...2009" - srg13, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17"Unlike Digg, Valve needs to keep their site clean"
There was ONE thread about the Linux client. There was also one about Mac OS... It's not like the forums were being spammed - acceptab1euname, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15Because it isn't a censorship issue.
- barakatx2, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Maybe if you people didn't act like you own the ***** company, then there wouldn't be anything to argue about. Game companies can do whatever the hell they want, and if they lose or gain money its their problem. Stop acting like they have to do whatever you say, its annoying.
- Lighthater, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Take your free speech to a different forum. They own it, they control it, you follow their rules.
- EyeofKilrogg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I completely agree, these are VALVE's forums, and therefore they can MODERATE (kinda what the moderators are for) them and decide who posts what. Remember that they have already addressed this issue so it makes sense that they don't want their forums being bombarded by threads that ask for something that they have already said no to.
- victorc26, on 10/11/2007, -7/+17If you know VALVe, you'd understand their position.
They're in the business of making meticulously created games, they just don't have time to make two versions of the same game. If they could get a linux version of Steam, I'm sure they would, but it just isn't possible with all the games available through Steam. Not even mentioning their development cycle. They just can't do it.
Trying to put Dell and VALVe in the same footing isn't even close to being fair. - barakatx2, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Does ID software use the Source engine? Which is a DirectX engine, and DirectX+Linux=false. And they spent 4 years making that god damn engine, so we don't need them to spend another 4 making a linux opengl one too.
- Lighthater, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Yeah, because pestering them and pissing them off will help you get your way. Leave them alone and buy a game that works in linux.
- victorc26, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10This is getting tiring. Now you're bashing VALVe because the founders used to be Microsoft employees?
Jeebus. - nickmv, on 10/11/2007, -10/+18if you dont like it, then get windows.....noone's pointing a gun to Valve's head and making them do crap. They most likely have a very good reason for not making a steam client for linux, such as MAYBE it's not worth the costs. Businesses operate on the principle that a good decision means that marg bens > marg costs. Ever thought of that? And if they DID, they'd have to port all the games too. Think about it
- omarciddo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8That's the problem when it comes to Linux users vs. companies. Linux users are so used to just being able to say something and have it eventually implemented that they (and I've been guilty of this too) assume that they can do this with anyone. Valve is not open source, and it is not directed by the community. Valve is a business, and like any business would do, they have to weigh cost vs. profit, and they may not be convinced that Linux is worth diving into just yet.
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Except that Dell got flooded in a forum where the specifically asked for user suggestions to new products. Valve are getting flooded in the support forum and through the support ticket system, which is nothing but abuse of the forums they provide.
Not the same thing. Not even remotely. Now ***** down and shut up. - TeCuervo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8They are not preventing your first amendment right. You can voice your opinion on your own server, write a letter to a newspaper or, well, say something in Digg... amongst other things...
