- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Better yet, use it as a mass-storage device and run GNU/Linux /on/ in the iPod. http://www.rockbox.org/
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Isn't that obvious?
One who owns an iPod. - cybrjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Don't know who told you Rockbox was Linux, but it's not. It's a firmware replacement they coded from scratch.
- secleinteer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Don't you love how it doesn't even say that you need a Debian based distro for the instructions to work? Nowadays, it seems like people assume that if you're using Linux, then it must be Ubuntu.
- tretti, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12http://amarok.kde.org/ -> looks way better than those crappy GTK+ apps. It's easier to use and provides more features. You should defenitely give it a try!
- tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What the hell is this? All you have to do is use AmaroK, which is like the Itunes of linux and you can use your iPod just fine, without losing any of the songs already on your ipod.
- simbaB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Linux != Ubuntu
apt-get != Ubuntu
Is Ubuntu the Visual Basic of distributions in that it is bringing in waaay to many ignorant users? - illicium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5..that is, if you run KDE. If you use Gnome, or other mainly GTK+ based desktop (like Xfce), Qt apps look like ass by default
- Blazeix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have a second gen shuffle, but I didn't want to download a largish GUI program just to manage my shuffle since Ubuntu recognizes it as a hard drive anyway. I found that there is a useful little CLI python script called shuffle_db. It generates the shuffle's database for you, and works really well.
shuffle_db:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_iPod_Shuffle - secleinteer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Edit: now that I think about it, you actually need an Ubuntu-based distro, seeing as Debian and it's various derivatives don't usually use sudo as their default method of accessing root privileges.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have the car adapter made by DLO and I use rockbox for my ipod. Everything works perfectly.
Hope that helps! - linuxathome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Title should be Using your iPod on Ubuntu/Debian Linux. It's a quick read, essentially, "use gtkpod." There, I saved you from reading it. BTW, I think they missed a few available spaces to put more google ads.
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well if you where using a distro like gentoo you would probably not need to waite for someone to post a how to on the front page of digg to figure out how to use your ipod.
- gstuartj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It should work. My car adapter works with it just fine.
- r121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@championchap
This article is talking about connecting your iPod to your Linux computer, not actually putting Linux on the iPod. - simbaB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3mikeazorin: care to provide some (reliable) stats on that? Distrowatch doesn't count. IIRC there's been some posts to Planet Debian indicating that this CW may be (as most CW is) wrong. Ubuntu is certainly the loudest distribution, that is for sure.
- popey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Rhythmbox is much nicer than gtkpod IMO. It just works with significantly less faff. Just plug in the ipod, drag files to it in Rhythmbox. Job done. No syncing or other sillyness. Very nice.
- MSTK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm going to hold out on Rockbox until they support 5G iPod Video...with video.
- Helfax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my opinion, the issue has never been about getting the iPod to work within Linux. It is being able to use iTunes to purchase music and other media that is the challenge.
- thepxc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On any modern (KDE) distro konqueror has crap built in for browsing/managing ipods...
- spin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Indeed, I have been using my ipod Nano with amarok for over a year now and it is great! waaay easier and more efficient, and less nagging than itunes. Just make sure you have Amarok 1.4 or better. Also the gtk alternatives are terrible. But I am dislike GTK apps in general because of all sorts of little issues & quirks which result in gtk apps not behaving like i would expect/prefer.
- MSTK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3...I just read the article (as a Linux user myself), and I don't see a single thing that the article described that I couldn't do back on Windows.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone who says Gentoo is hard to use has never used it. Sure, it can take a little while to install some of the bigger softwares like X11, but really, it's quite easy to use. I always found that with a fresh Gentoo system, it's really easy to install new software since just about everything under the sun has an ebuild up there, and usually before any other distribution has a binary available as an easy apt-get. One little command, and your software is delivered and built for you on the spot. With the machines we have today, compiling software takes hardly any time at all.
The problem with Gentoo comes not from the compilation times, or the installation of software, but rather the broken installations you can find yourself in if you don't keep the entire system updated on a regular basis. That's the big problem with Gentoo. - sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I also see the following when I plug the iPod in:
iPod Database Import Failed: 'iTunesDB '/media/ipod/iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB' corrupt: mhsd expected at 2526794.'
from gtkpod. Google doesn't seem to know much about that error message though. - alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you actually have enough space to store your whole music collection.
The files may just not be present in the itunesdb, try deleting them from the filesystem so your ipod is actually empty and then start again. - arcticblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is where I read it:
http://abock.org/2006/09/14/we-need-you-and-apple-sucks-part-2/
That's Aaron Bockover's site. He's the main developer for Banshee and also a good friend of mine. I can't find much more information about the database change that was made, but it causes problems with some programs detecting which version ipod you have. My best guess is that whatever program you're using is having trouble detecting it and is falling back on a version that just isn't compatible with yours. I could be wrong though... That article is a few months old so maybe some advances have been made. - arcticblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just thought about this...and this might be a stupid question...but are you properly ejecting your ipod? It might be caused by some sort of delayed write thing.
- MSTK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can anyone tell me if this supports video?
- Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Amarok with my iPod on Fedora. It works perfectly.
I'd recommend it. - sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's definitely a valid question, and I am ejecting it properly.
*sigh* - dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GTKPod is free, works with my 80 gigger and comes in the Add/Remove section. and yes GTKPod supports video. also i was able to get WAV's onto my iPod...dont know if your able to with itunes, but i found that funny because i thought it wasnt supported by iPods.
- sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I definitely have enough room, and I've wiped the thing and tried again.
This is most disheartening to be certain. Any other thoughts? - sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It has been touched by iTunes 7. I have as mentioned, however, wiped the thing (as in, deleting ALL files from the filesystem) and tried again. I wonder if it has to do with a firmware update that happened along the way. That doesn't really make sense, though, since it does work when only copying partial amounts of music. Though not with copying the entire library piece-meal.
You don't happen to know where you read that piece of information do you? - sdbarker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got a 5.5g 30gb, and have had SIGNIFICANT issues getting the thing to work correctly through gtkpod, Amarok, etc (they all use the same library). Everything works fine for adding/syncing just a few songs. But, with a substantial music collection, syncing all of it causes NONE of the music to show up on the ipod, though looking at the file system all of the files are present. It seems like a large volume of songs manages to cause the library to generate a corrupt database or some such.
Has anybody else experienced this problem, and if so, found solutions? I'd hate to have to start booting Windows just to sync my iPod. - themattreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Enough of these Ubuntu How-To articles. Ubuntu is overrated!
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh damn, sorry guys.. i read the first comment as if it was something very involved with the story..
Luckily the comment i made before was somewhat relevant to the comment i replied to
but, you know.. its 3:15am and ive got to be up at 7.. - nandasunu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SharpMusique is dead: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PyMusique
- stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SharpMusique - look it up.
- AhmedB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find Banshee to be the best, even though it took me about 2 hours to compile it (and dependencies) from source on SuSE 10.1.
- arcticblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has your ipod been touched by iTunes 7? I read that they change some ways the database is handled on the ipod in itunes 7 causing some incompatibilities with some programs.
I have a 5g 60GB and I've had no problems with the latest Amarok included in Ubuntu 6.10. In previous versions, I've had issues with Amarok, but not gtkpod. Amarok would transfer all of my music, but it would all be under "Movies" and about 250 songs would actually show up in "Music". - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I use it with my ipod video and it works just fine. I also have a shell script that you just give it an avi file name and it spits out a ipod compatible video. If you are an ubuntu user you will have to compile your own ffmpeg and gtkpod to get it to work with video. The version in the standard repos doesn't work with video but it's not to hard to get going.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Edit: now that I think about it, you actually need an Ubuntu-based distro, seeing as Debian and it's various derivatives don't usually use sudo as their default method of accessing root privileges."
WTF are you talking about - that's absolute bollocks - sudo is becoming *more* common to stop new users being permanently logged in as root. Just because ubuntu uses it, don't think for 1 second that it's an ubuntu thing. Sweeping statements do not magically become facts you know. - nandasunu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would try formatting the whole ipod with gparted or something then trying again. I had a few problems with my ipod, after I formatted it and started again (just using amarok) I've had no probs. Amarok will create all the database files for you again etc.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
yup, works a treat:
1. Plug in IPod
2. Drop your files onto the 'Transfer - drop stuff here' folder
3. Wait for files to be copied...
4. Right click ipod, select safely remove...
whoooosh... it's done - although gtkpod et al do allow you do do other stuff like searches etc, which makes them very useful, but for quickly copying stuff you can't beat the drag n drop method - SpeKopuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Amarok is way better than gtkpod to manage your iPod on Linux, and it works perfect.
- championchap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Posting this here so people see it may not be the best idea, and i may get dugg down for it.. but it is my word of warning.
I have the first generation Nano, and i tried iPod Linux a while ago.. it worked quite well, though music playback was awful.
I put iDoom on there too, but i would advice most not to do so.. after installing it i noticed i couldnt get back to the apple firmware on it, and so it was recognised only as a mass storage device by my PC, no chance of formatting it there..
after about an hour and a alf of hard resetting it and looking over FAQ's i finally managed to get it to bot into the apple firmware once more.
I wasted no tme and quickly formatted it back to its original state.
I wont be trying that again in a hurry.. and i would advise anyone else doing so to be very careful about it. - stevex0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rockbox is your answer ot get an xclef
- scooter17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anybody know when the 2G nano will be supported? Or are we still at the stage where it'll be done "when they finish it"?
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Id be scared to use a regular ipod (as mine broke within 3 months of purchase w/ just normal usage) but I I have a 2g Nano now. I just bought a new mobo/ram/cpu for my fileserver which had many of my mp3's and I was surprised how easy it was to get everything working (besides permissions and all on a new Ubuntu setup). All I needed was GTKPod and just mounted the 2nd partition on the ipod using 'mount -t vfat /dev/sdb2 /media/ipod'.
Not much to it. - albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would really like to try out RockBox on my 5G ipod (development seems to have come a long way in the past year), but I'm guessing that it wouldn't work with my car stereo's ipod adapter, which is where I use my ipod the most...
